Culture and Patient Safety Survey Results
Thank you to all staff who took the time to respond to our 2012 Culture
and Patient Safety Survey. It was our most successful survey ever,
with close to half of our workforce sharing their opinions and thoughts
on how they feel about being employed at Alfred Health.
Having achieved the participation of more than 3,400 staff means we
can not only have confidence and trust in the results, but we are also
left with a valuable set of data. This information can be used to guide
improvements and changes that will take us forward as a strong
community.
Over the coming weeks, program directors, department heads and unit
heads will begin sharing the results of the survey with their teams. It
will be an opportunity to discuss and explore what the results mean and
to thank you for your hard work, dedication and commitment.
Importantly, we can also begin to address the areas needing
improvement.
The overall analysis tells us that we have an extremely positive culture
of trust and commitment, and that the vast majority of staff think Alfred
Health is not only a good place to work, but one that close to three
quarters feel an emotional attachment to.
While responses indicated that performance reviews are objective and
fair, we also learned that we need to ensure more of our staff are
exposed to this annual process. Not only does it help to provide clarity
around work expectations, but it delivers a platform from which
feedback can be given - something the survey revealed we need to do
better.
By nature we are an organisation that moves quickly to address the
next opportunity or to solve a problem but the survey results also tell us
that we don’t always pause to recognise good work, to deliver praise,
recognition, or simply say “thank you”.
The survey has given us a snapshot of our workforce. If we use the
results wisely it will improve Alfred Health and I look forward to hearing
the feedback that you provide in the team discussions over the coming
weeks.
Women’s Health
Physical and mental wellbeing.
All women are not the same and women’s overall health and wellbeing is multi-faceted and diverse. A focus
on the health of women has two main objectives: To Protect and To Support. Evidence shows that support to
women can lead to improved health status and income levels in both households and communities.
Exercise regularly
Regular physical activity is vital for optimising the
physical and mental health of all women. The
proven health benefits of physical activity include
the prevention of a range of chronic diseases,
the promotion of good mental health and the
maintenance of a healthy weight.
The key chronic diseases that regular physical activity
can prevent are diabetes, cardiovascular disease,
osteoporosis and some cancers including bowel and
breast cancer.
For more detailed information, please visit
www.jeanhailes.org.au/resources/fact-sheets.
Regular physical activity plays a significant role in
improving moods and subsequent mental health, and
has been shown to relieve symptoms of depression.
Improved quality of sleep is related to women’s
participation in physical activity and it is an important
marker of quality of life.
Women, who are physically fit fall asleep faster, sleep
better and are less tired during the day.
Workplace Programs
There is so much value to be gained from promoting
health and wellbeing amongst your workforce.
Research has shown that healthy, engaged
employees are nearly three times more productive
than employees with poor health. A focus on health
and wellbeing in the workplace can help to reduce
staff absenteeism and improve retention.
Work-life balance
Poor work-life balance can lead to stress,
absenteeism and low output. Helping women
employees achieve work-life balance is integral to
their general health and wellbeing, increasing their
work satisfaction and motivation. They are likely
to be more committed, more flexible and more
responsive to the business and customers’ needs.
1

Women’s Health...contd.
Companies are already implementing work-life
balance practices that enables its employees to
enjoy the following significant benefits:
• Being able to effectively manage multiple
responsibilities at home, work and in the
community without guilt or regret.
• Being able to work in flexible ways so that
earning an income and managing family/other
commitments become easier.
• Being part of a supportive workplace that values
and trusts staff.
Improve your overall wellbeing
Every positive change is a step towards better and
longer lasting health and happiness. Every aspect of
your life influences your state of wellbeing. You can
start to make changes today and take the proactive
approach. The following are a few important tips to
maintain a healthy lifestyle:
• Exercise regularly
• Maintain a healthy diet
• Go for a health check regularly
• Quit smoking and reduce your alcohol intake
The role of Aspirin and NSAIDs in Cancer
Prevention
Seminar details
Dr Asad Umar will be discussing epidemiological, preclinical and clinical
evidence for cancer prevention. He will also discuss the evidence for Aspirin’s
role in multiple disease prevention.
Guest Speaker: Dr Asad Umar, DVM, PhD
Dr Asad Umar is the Head of Gastrointestinal & Other Cancer Research Group
in the Division of Cancer Prevention, National Cancer Institute (NCI). He
received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins
University, Baltimore, MD in 1993. He then conducted his postdoctoral training
in the laboratories of Patricia Gearhart in Baltimore MD and of Thomas Kunkel
at National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences in Research Triangle
Park NC. Dr Umar’s main scientific interest is to understand the molecular
pathways during gastrointestinal carcinogenesis and applying molecular
targeted and immunologic interventions to prevent cancer.
As a program Director, Dr. Umar oversees a wide variety of grants focusing on
translational research screening and clinical trials.
Recently, Dr Umar represented DCP for NCI’s Provocative Questions initiative
where a large number of unanswered (but important) questions in oncology
are being focused for research priority. A major emphasis is on the
mechanisms of cancer prevention for a number of successful interventions
and understanding the link between obesity and ageing on cancer risk.
Light refreshments provided.
