“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we
have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
- Nelson Mandela, Former President of South Africa
Principal’s Letter
Dear Badin Alumni and Friends,
At Badin High School, we strive to put
the above quote into action. Our motto the
last several years has been, “Serving God,
Serving Others.” Our faculty, staff, students,
parents and alumni prove time and again the
difference one can make in the lives of others.
Recently, our sophomores met with various
local agencies to learn more about how they
can make a difference in our local community.
Many of our students participated in a Habitat
for Humanity build to provide housing to
those in need. Several Friday evenings all year
long, you will find Badin students, teachers
and parents volunteering at the Community
Meal Center in Hamilton, providing food and
company to local citizens who are in need of
a hot meal and friendship. These are only a
few examples of the difference our students
make in the lives of others.
Our teachers make a difference every day
in the classroom and beyond. The high quality
education that our students receive is second
to none. What sets our teachers apart is the
personal concern our faculty and staff have
for the students. Students appreciate knowing
that their teachers care for and support them
as young men and women. Students are able
to not only receive an excellent education
from their teachers but are also able to
develop mentoring relationships that serve
the students well in the future as they apply
for college and make decisions about careers.
We are blessed to have an outstanding faculty
and staff here at Badin High School.
These are exciting times at Badin High
School. At 158 students, our freshman Class
of 2016 is the largest class in the school since
the Class of 2008 arrived in August of 2004.
Our overall enrollment is over 500, which is
an increase of 50 students from last year.
All of our students and faculty are utilizing
iPads. Technology has dramatically changed
the way students learn and here at Badin we
are responding to these changes in order
to provide the best education possible. The
iPads allow our students to become actively
engaged in the learning process. Our faculty
continues to find new and innovative ways
to implement this technology into their
curriculum, always with a focus on increasing
student achievement.
For the first time in the history of the
school, our classrooms are air conditioned!
This project was completed over the summer.
Thank you to the school board for their
support on this important project. It has
made a tremendous difference in the learning
environment.
These and other improvements have made
Badin a stronger school. However, Badin High
School is still all about family. The success
of our students now and in the future is
dependent on the quality of the people
who fill the hallways at BHS. The positive
experiences our students and families are
having are the key to our continued growth.
We must continue to hire and retain high
quality teachers and staff that help guide our
students on their path to adulthood. We must
continue to provide strong faith development
through our entire retreat program, our
Christian Service program and throughout all
our classes. We must continue to challenge
ourselves to meet the needs of current and
future students while remaining true to our
values. We pray that we will continue to
receive your prayers and support as we strive
to live our mission.
As always, we welcome your presence at
Badin. We would love the opportunity to
show you around the campus and meet our
wonderful faculty, staff and students.
God bless you and your family –
New class brings more energy to Badin
4
Badin High School welcomed 158 students into its freshman class
of 2016, the largest class since the Class of 2008 entered in August of
2004.
“We’re very excited about this new group,’’ said Badin Principal
Mr. Brian Pendergest ’90. “There is a lot of energy at Badin and this
class is adding to it.”
The new class represents the third consecutive year that the
freshman class has been the largest in the school. Students in the
Class of 2016 entered Badin from 27 different schools. There are 23
zip codes represented in the overall BHS population of 510 students.
“We work very hard at recruiting,’’ said Mr. Dirk Q. Allen,
director of admissions and media relations. “Recruiting is basically
telling students and families about the tremendous opportunities
available at Badin, and encouraging them to take advantage of those
opportunities.”
Implementation of the new iPad program throughout the school
has proven very popular with students, and the building is now air
conditioned, which made a significant difference in the learning
environment during August and September.
“There is definitely a good buzz about Badin,” Allen said. “We do a
wide variety of marketing all over the area. One thing you realize is
that if students like what you’re offering, they will come a long way
to get on board.”
Allen said the enthusiasm from current students and parents about
Badin High School clearly helps pave the way to attracting more
students.
“When people are out there saying good things about Badin, that
counts for a lot,’’ Allen underlined. “Others hear that, and they want
to be involved in the good things you have going on. It’s a very
positive cycle.”
A large crowd of more than 250 potential students from various
grades attended Badin’s Open House on Sunday, Oct. 21, and the
High School Placement Test took place on Saturday, Nov. 17.
There will be an additional Question and Answer opportunity for
potential families on Thursday, Dec. 13, from 7-8 p.m. at
the high school. Registration Night for the Class of 2017 is
Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013. Financial aid applications for all
Badin students for the 2013-14 school year are due March 1.
“We have a lot of important dates coming up,’’ Allen said,
“but the bottom line is, if students are interested in joining
the Badin family, they should get in touch with us and we
will work toward making that happen.”
Contact Dirk Q. Allen at (513) 863-3993, ext. 120, or by e-mail
at Dallen@badinhs.org
Open House was a great event
We had 250+ students and their families visit Badin,
reflecting 28 different schools. This again sets another
record for Open House. Special thanks to student
and adult volunteers who assisted with the event.

Mark O’Hara makes students ‘curious learners’ and ‘freer citizens’
“At it’s very basic
level, education makes
someone a freer citizen.”
That’s the way Mark
O’Hara sees the value
of education, and the
veteran Badin English
teacher has been making
students “freer citizens”
for years.
“It’s really rewarding in
so many ways,’’ O’Hara
said of teaching. He’s in
his 14th year of teaching sophomore English at Badin, his
29th year of teaching overall. “You watch students become
curious learners. They pursue that curiosity, and they grow
and become more educated … and then they want to
know more about what’s out there.”
O’Hara himself is practicing what he preaches. He’s
working on his doctorate in Curriculum and Cultural
Studies through the Department of Educational Leadership
at Miami University. All that’s left at this point is to write his
doctoral dissertation.
“The classes for my doctorate have been a lot of work,’’
said O’Hara, 53. “But it’s good to know that I’m capable
of doing it at a school of Miami’s caliber. Being a student
myself has made me a better teacher.”
O’Hara concedes that he faces a basic challenge as an
English teacher.
“It’s hard to get students to read,’’ he said. “I know our
classes try to have a good balance between the classics and
contemporary books. One good strategy I’ve found is to
open up the opportunities for students to choose their own
books.
“Badin students do read a lot,” he added, “but you’d like
students to read more because they want to and not just
because it’s an assignment.”
O’Hara’s college concentration was creative writing, so
he enjoys teaching writing as well as poetry.
“That’s what I’m best at,’’ said O’Hara, who was involved
in the Ohio Writing Project at Miami and has also attended
numerous poetry workshops over the years. He is a
nationally published poet. “I’d like to restart the Ram
Review this year,’’ he said of the Badin poetry anthology.
“We haven’t done that in a few years, and it’s time to bring
it back.”
O’Hara has overseen the One Act plays at Badin
throughout his tenure, and earlier directed the musicals for
six years. He and his wife, Karen, are the parents of two
children, Billy ’03 and Kristin ‘06.
What’s changed over the years
“Technology, obviously,” O’Hara nodded. “It’s gotten
more prevalent and it’s easier to use. Our technology at
Badin is top of the line. It’s as good or better than any other
high school around.”
Yet some things remain the same.
“I still teach ‘The Great Gatsby’ every year,” he said of the
F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. “The students like it because they
find characters in the book that they recognize. It’s like a
soap opera – the plot is suspenseful and action-packed. For
our students, it’s relatable to today’s world.”
O’Hara, who graduated from Catholic high school in New
Jersey, wanted his children to also benefit from a Catholic
education … and it just so happened that there were English
teaching openings at BHS at the same time. It has worked out
well.
“I plan to stay at Badin for several more years, though I’d
like to find a position in a university before I retire,’’ he said.
“Maybe I’ll put a book out on language arts in a high school
curriculum. There is a lot that can be said about that.”
In the meantime, he’s happy to be teaching at Badin.
“Badin is an outstanding school,’’ he said. “I’m proud to
have taught several Badin grads who themselves are now
teachers.”
trio of winners
Badin seniors Michael Kulifay (left) and Michael Lakomy (right)
joined veteran physics and calculus teacher Mr. Mark Merz as
major award winners in the fall. Both Kulifay and Lakomy were
named Commended Students in the 2013 National Merit
Scholarship competition. Lakomy also earned the Honda/Ohio
State Partnership math medal, while Merz was nominated as an
Educator of the Year by the University of Chicago, based on a
recommendation by 2012 BHS valedictorian Christina Dong.
Kulifay is considering Miami University to major in accounting or
financial management, while Lakomy’s No.1 choice is Ohio State
for political science and economics.
Dennis Malone ‘69 a lifelong difference-maker
Dennis Malone ’69 has spent his life making a difference
– and though he has retired from a career in education, no
doubt there is much more to come.
“I hope if you talk to the people in the buildings (where
he was principal), they would feel like I worked in their best
interests,” said Malone, who recently stepped down after
nine years as principal at Hamilton High School. “I live in the
same community, and I want to see the development of all the
families. Hopefully you’ve had a part in the development of all
of them.”
Malone is well respected across all boundaries – at
Badin, where he went to school and subsequently taught; in
Hamilton, where he was involved in the public schools for
nearly 27 years; and in Fairfield, where he lives.
“Badin has always been a part of my life,’’ he remarked.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time there as both a student and a
teacher. There were some really good people there. I value
those relationships. I think when it comes to my sense of
responsibility as a person, it comes from my family, and from
Badin.”
Malone served as an administrator at all three Hamilton
junior high schools – Wilson, George Washington and Garfield,
before nearly a decade at HHS. He was the principal when
major construction projects took place at both Garfield and
Hamilton High.
“I have a saying – I build ‘em, but I don’t live in ‘em,’’ he
laughed about the fact that he left Garfield for HHS after
the former project was completed, and just retired at the
conclusion of the HHS construction. “That construction was
a huge issue for three years at each school,” Malone said.
“We basically rebuilt the building while we were still in it.
You think of the students, the customers – well, that’s their
year. They don’t have a next year. You can’t afford to have a
lost year for any group of students. You have to figure out a
way to do the activities that need to be done.”
A Vietnam veteran, Malone concedes that his one-year
tour in Vietnam with the Army in 1971 informs his view of life
around him.
“It goes to the
core of who I
am,’’ he nodded.
“Growing up in
Lindenwald, I was
pretty insulated. In
the Army, in Vietnam,
I was exposed to
the thinking of
other people, to
the experiences of
people from all over
It was Dennis Malone Day in Hamilton as Malone, right, was honored
during Civics Day in 2011. Asked about a picture for this Shades of
Green article, this is the one the 1969 Badin High grad wanted to
have run – surrounded by family. Photo courtesy of the Hamilton JournalNews.
the country. One thing I learned is that we all have a lot more in
common than we do different. I wish more people would realize that.
“It helped me,’’ he added of the Vietnam experience. “It changed my
perception of other people. It made me more open to other points
of view. It’s a part of my life that will never go away.”
Malone said that as an administrator, he realized the importance
of hiring good teachers and keeping them involved in the school.
He worked hard to create teacher-student connections that would
help students realize that there were people who cared about their
success.
“In the beginning, it was almost overwhelming (to be the principal
of Hamilton High),” Malone said. “You have to rely on the people
who have been there before you got there. Over time, you’ve been
there and now you start to know what’s coming. Then you can focus
on: How can we improve what we do It’s the whole concept of
continuous improvement.”
He said a dynamic question he continually worked on with student
populations was: “How do you offer hope for kids who don’t see
hope How do you continue to come back and say education is a way
out. You have to continue to keep learning. You can’t see high school
as a terminal point in education.”
He said dropouts and students with poor attendance “don’t think
we’re offering anything that they want. You have to make a better
connection with them.”
Malone and his wife, Mary McClellan Malone ’69, are the parents
of two sons – Mike ‘96, the principal at Talawanda Middle School in
Oxford; and Joe ‘98, a major in the United States Army, currently
stationed at Fort Knox after combat engineering tours in both Iraq
and Afghanistan.

Maggie Brennan ’96 keeps hope alive at Children’s Hospital
Ask Maggie Brennan ‘96 what she majored in at Miami University and she laughs, “The gift of chat. If you think
about it, that’s what I do all day. But the stories I hear are so inspiring.”
Brennan weaves those stories into a larger mosaic as the manager of the Champions Program at Cincinnati
Children’s Hospital Medical Center. The program allows families to “give back” to the hospital in various ways
– and continue to deliver the message of hope to those going through medical difficulties of their own.
“This is very much a rewarding position,’’ said Brennan, the daughter of Tim and Debbie Brennan of Ross. “It
allows me to keep my life in perspective. I believe I was put in this job for a reason.”
Brennan went to work at CCHMC in 2005 as a major gifts fundraiser, and five years ago started the
Champions Program.
“Our families need the sort of community that this program provides,’’ Brennan said. “People need to know
that there are other families out there that have been through or are going through the same thing they are.”
Brennan’s program has connected with at least two Badin families – Kyle Bergen ’14, who defeated lymphoma
as a freshman; and Mrs. Kelli Verdin Kurtz ’88, Badin’s executive director of institutional advancement whose
family is an active supporter of her efforts.
“Somebody asked me if I heard only the good stories,” Brennan said. “Believe me, I hear everything – the good, the bad and the ugly. I
wear a lot of hats.”
Brennan was featured in a recent issue of Cincinnati Magazine, which pointed out that some 700 patients and their families volunteer
their time through the Champions Program, speaking, mentoring, advocating and fundraising.
“Naturally, I love to network, and I love to help others network,’’ said Brennan, who actually majored in speech communications and
public relations at Miami. “You get to connect all the dots with people. You get to connect with the community.”
Brennan noted that some 30 families involved with the Champions Program have lost children but remain involved.
“Our slogan is ‘Change the Outcome,’” she said, “and one mother whose terminally ill child passed away said to me, ‘You couldn’t
change the outcome, but you certainly changed our outlook.’”
Brennan helps outcomes and outlooks at the Children’s Hospital Medical Center every day. “It’s the opportunity to give back to the
hospital and the community through hope and mentorship,’’ she said. “Being recognized for doing this is an honor.”
Badin’s new RamParent Group!
We are excited to have a new RamParent Group to help at Badin. Many
are interested in helping in different aspects at school and the RamParent
Group will be a great way to get many involved. This collective
group of parents is not a fundraising machine, but will provide a support
group that will take care of:
• Parent engagement events
• Student directory
• Miscellaneous help for class retreats, Advancement Office, etc.
• Parent buddy system for new parents and students
• Assisting the Advancement Office with recruiting events such
as Open House.
• Uniform Exchange and more!
Co-chairs of the RamParent Group are Jeanne Schindler and Angie Sansone.
We look forward to a growing group of parents who are interested
A message from
Advancement
by Angie Pieper Gray ‘83
Director of Development and Marketing
When I think of the Badin family, I
envision a large oak tree in fertile
ground. The Badin root system is
plentiful, strong and well fertilized.
The trunk is sturdy and ever growing.
The limbs and leaves are abundant
and bountiful. Through sunshine,
storms, droughts, snow & ice, the oak
tree continues to grow and bend to
adapt to its ever changing environment.
The root system continues to
flourish and the above ground portion
grows new leaves and sheds them every year, further fertilizing the
ground it stands in.
According to the Colorado State University web page on ‘Healthy Roots
and Healthy Trees’: “…The root system of a tree performs many vital
functions. In winter, it is a store-house for essential food reserves needed
by the tree to produce spring foliage. Roots absorb and transport water
and minerals from the soil to the rest of the tree. Roots also anchor the
portion of the tree above ground. It is important to keep the portion
above ground healthy to ensure an adequate food supply for the roots to
continue their important functions…”
As I read the information for healthy trees and roots, I am reminded how
important both the root system and the above ground portion are and
how they must work together to provide an overall healthy tree; and that
proves true for the Badin family. The root system represents our alumni
from Badin, Hamilton Catholic, and Notre Dame High Schools; the above
portion of the tree our current school family.
Our tree is producing bountiful students who are service-minded and
well prepared for college and the world beyond our walls. Our Badin
tree also has a strong and plentiful root system that has withstood the
past recession and continued to support Badin High School as we have
weathered the poor economy. We often hear of alumni successes –
acceptances into prestigious programs, running successful businesses,
being honored by their community for their service, earning post-graduate
degrees, teaching at Badin or other schools, working as doctors, nurses,
firefighters, police officers and more. Our alumni continue to change
the world for the better in so many ways, too many to count, and we are
proud.
Lead the Future Strategic Planning 2012-13
-by Kelli Verdin Kurtz ‘88,
Executive Director of Institutional Advancement
ADVANCEMENT LETTER
In just four short years, Badin High School will celebrate
its 50th anniversary. By many standards, Badin is deemed
the young kid on the block. Just like people, schools
experience an evolution of sorts—from adolescence,
to maturity, to transformation. I’m proud to say we’re in
the latter category as we look to redefine what it means
to be a premier Catholic high school in the 21st century.
Beginning in the spring of 2012, the Badin Board of
Advisors launched a comprehensive strategic planning
process to help chart our course for the next 3-5 years.
Reviewing our mission and defining our core values has
played a pivotal role in shaping our future. This work was
conducted over several months by all 9 of the strategic
planning committees. We believe our updated mission
and core values statements are a true reflection of the
unique identity of Badin High School.
The strategic planning committees have identified the
following priorities that will shape our strategic plan.
These priorities are a reflection of the hopes and dreams
of the Badin faculty and staff, parents, students, alumni,
