14. During Colonial days, Ahmed Lakha Kanji <strong>and</strong> Anwer Hassan Virjee<br />

served as nominated members <strong>of</strong> the Zanzibar Legislative Council. In<br />

Kenya, A. H. Nurmohamed served as a nominated member <strong>of</strong> the Kenya<br />

Legislative Council. In Ug<strong>and</strong>a H. K. Jaffer served for long as a<br />

nominated member <strong>of</strong> the East African Legislative Assembly. In pre<br />

independent Tanganyika, Jaffer Mohamed Versi, Ebrahim Husein Sheriff<br />

<strong>and</strong> Mohamed Banadali Versi served as nominated members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Tanganyika Legislative Council<br />

In local Governments, in Tangnyika, Ramzan Rajabali Jaffer served as<br />

an elected member <strong>and</strong> Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Daressalaam Muncipal Council<br />

before it was elevated to City status while Ebrahim Husein Sheriff was<br />

elected as Mayor <strong>of</strong> Arusha.<br />

In Ug<strong>and</strong>a, Mohamedali Hansraj was elected as the first Mayor <strong>of</strong><br />

Mbale. In Kenya, A. H. Nurmohamed who had taken active part in local<br />

politics <strong>and</strong> in the Indian National Congress served for long as a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Mombasa Municipal Council. He was followed by Husein Abdulla<br />

Jaffer. In post independent Tanzania Shaukat Jaffer was elected to the<br />

Dar es Salaam City Council in the last term.<br />

In Zanzibar, during the Colonial days, Hussein Allarakhia Rahim who<br />

served for some time as a Magistrate was later elevated as a Judge fo the<br />

Zanzibar High Court <strong>and</strong> Hussein Nazerali served as the Registrar <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Zanzibar High Court while Ahmed Abdulrasul Datoo served as<br />

Commissioner <strong>of</strong> Customs.<br />

In the first Zanzibar Government (after achieving independence in Dec,<br />

1963 <strong>and</strong> before the Zanzibar Revolution <strong>of</strong> 1964) Amir Abdulrasul<br />

Dewji was made one <strong>of</strong> the Ministers <strong>and</strong> Mohamedali Fazal Meghji<br />

(Mohamedali 'Poz') was elected as the deputy Speaker in Zanzibar's first<br />

Parliament. They functioned for barely a month before the Zanzibar<br />

revolution swept aside the elected Government.<br />

In independent Tanzania, Abbas Gulamali, Hassnain Murji, Hassanain<br />

Dewji, Yasmin Alloo <strong>and</strong> Mohamed Gulamabbas Dewji have been<br />

elected as members <strong>of</strong> the Tanzania Parliament. Yasmin Alloo has been<br />

a leading member <strong>of</strong> the Women's Wing <strong>of</strong> the Umoja ya Wanawake in<br />

Zanzibar <strong>and</strong> she was nominated as Women's representative to the<br />

Tanzanian Parliament.<br />
