The 5-star MV Aqua departs from Iquitos, gliding along the Peruvian section, docking at points to enable exploration of remote estuaries by river launch with your naturalist guide. The pristine rainforest teems with wildlife – Amazonia is home to two thirds of all species in the world – and you may encounter local people in primitive villages. By contrast, the sophistication of Machu Picchu, the Inca city built in the mid-15th century and rediscovered in 1911, is spellbinding; its ashlar ruins lie shrouded in swirling mist which slowly rises to reveal the dramatic setting. The Hiram Bingham Orient Express train takes you to this ancient citadel where a late morning arrival allows plenty of time to explore. The MV Aqua features 12 large suites offering a generous 230 square feet of space with large picture windows, air-conditioning and en suite sitting areas. The ‘Hiram Bingham Orient Express’ consists of two dining cars, an observation bar car and a kitchen car, carrying up to 84 passengers. The Aqua chef specialises in Peruvian fusion served with regional wine, an opportunity to become acquainted with the best South American vintages. On board the Hiram Bingham, indulge in a three-course brunch on the ascent to Machu Picchu and four-course dinner with pisco sours on the way down. In high water season (December to May), the estuaries grow, allowing boats to venture deeper into the flooded forest; in low water (June to November, the receding river reveals beautiful beaches. Avoid Machu Picchu in the wet season (January to February).
