Advance Notice of Extra Traffic Expected Please see below a list of events that will be taking place during this academic year, when we expect a large number of vehicles to be in the area. This is of particular relevance to those families living near to the school, but also to those picking up or dropping off pupils. Musical Event Year 6 Induction Evening Enrichment Week The Olympic Torch comes to Longfield Many pupils and parents from Longfield lined the streets with excitement and anticipation when the Olympic torch came to Darlington on July 17 th . However, for one ex-Longfield pupil, Matt Carnelly, it was not just a case of looking on, but running as a torch bearer when later on the flame travelled to Hartlepool. Matt left Longfield in 2008 and began coaching sport voluntarily alongside my a-level studies. He is a local hero in every sense of the word, and has overcome a number of difficulties to excel, achieve and help his local community. Matt has been coaching sport and in particular football and futsal to hundreds of children in the past few years, particularly in the Darlington and Leeds areas. Even though Matt devotes much of his time and efforts to his voluntary work, he has successfully completed his A-levels and is studying for a BSc in Sports Coaching at Leeds Metropolitan University. He has done all of this despite the fact that he had meningitis as a baby and has hydrocephalus as a result. Matt's efforts have seen him win many awards including Volunteer of the year, Student of the year and Best Student in Darlington but carrying the torch was a perfect reward for sports mad Matt! Afterwards Matt kindly brought the torch into school and to the Sports Presentation Evening and many pupils (and staff) had the opportunity to be photographed with the torch as a momento of their own Olympic experience. 20
Longfield 100 Club As part of our fundraising activities we run a small lottery draw – the 100 Club. It is open to parents/carers, governors and staff. For £2 per month you can “buy” a number, which will be entered into the monthly draw, giving you the chance to win a cash prize.
