HIGH OUTPUT MARINE DC CHARGING SYSTEMS
Making The Most
Of Your Charging System
Like most complex systems, your vessel’s
electrical charging system not only dictates how
much energy you’ll have to operate your onboard
electrical demands - it also has a major impact on
how many batteries you can effectively
charge, and how long it will take
to bring those batteries back to a fully
charged state.
Walk the docks, and you’ll see that
each vessel has its own advantages
and its own limitations for electrical use.
Let’s look at the typical mono hull sailboat. More
often than not, the sailboat’s primary source of
electrical charging is it’s propulsion engine. While
this is a great advantage for fuel economy, the
ability to charge is usually limited by the engine.
In most cases, the physical size and amperage
output of the alternator are dictated by
tight quarters and the horsepower limits
of the engine’s drive belt.
Balmar high output alternators and
smart, multi-stage voltage
regulators enable the sail boater to
maximize the available charging
output for house and starting batteries
by providing the greatest amount of
charging current possible without
overwhelming the limited capabilities
of the engine and drive belt.
Twin engine applications, like cruising
powerboats and multi-hull sailboats,
offer the advantage of two alternators
which, when properly balanced and
controlled, can provide twice the
charging capacity for larger battery
loads.
By integrating two high-output Balmar
alternators and smart Max Charge
voltage regulators with Balmar’s
Centerfielder II, the power boater
and multi-hull sailor can effectively
double the charging power that’s
available to charge large house
battery banks.
Sailboat System Upgrade
With a single propulsion engine
doubling as the primary charge
source, traditional mono hull vessels
require maximum charging output
while underway. Replacing the stock
alternator with a Balmar alternator
and multi-stage regulator can
substantially increase that charging
performance. Add the Digital Duo
Charge for starting battery care.
Multi hull System Upgrade
By combining the outputs of both
port and starboard alternators,
the multi hull charging system
can effectively charge twice the
battery capacity. Balmar’s twin
engine Centerfielder II, allows
port and starboard systems
work independently or together,
adding double the output.
Finding The Perfect Fit
Even as the charging systems vary by vessel type, each vessel’s charging system will differ based on engine
type, battery load and battery technology, engine room space, belt type and size, and a host of other variables.
Designing an electrical system without considering all of the vessel’s characteristics and limitations will invariably
result in an unbalanced environment with less than optimal performance.
The following pages provide guidelines for determining the Balmar charging system that will best support your
energy needs. Before investing in a high-output charging system, save yourself a world of frustration and wasted
dollars by ensuring the system you purchase is correct for your application.
Considerations that must be addressed to select the correct charging system include: mounting style, alternator
size, belt load limitations, required battery capacity and battery technology. The following pages detail many
of the various issues one should consider to ensure trouble-free installation and operation. Balmar strongly
recommends that you take the time to review the information provided to ensure that you purchase the system
that’s best matched to your engine and battery banks.
– 3 –
Alternator Mounting Styles
The first issue, alternator mounting style, usually falls into one of four possibilities:
(A) single 1”-foot (Motorola-Style) spindle mount, (B) single 2”-foot (Delco-Style)
spindle mount, (C) 3.15” ID saddle (Hitachi-style) mount, and (D) 4”ID saddle (J-180
style) mount. The vast majority of marine gasoline and diesel engines will use one
of these four mounting styles. The list below provides a guide for many engine
applications, yet we strongly recommend you compare your existing alternator to
the alternators at right to ensure a proper match. In some cases, additional spacing
or modification to mounting components may be necessary to ensure proper fit or
alignment. A full list of alternator dimensions is provided on Page 19 of the Product
Guide. While Balmar makes every effort to provide an OEM-compatible product,
“drop in” alternator replacement is not guaranteed.
C
As indicated in the chart, alternator mounting styles may vary among engine
manufacturer’s models and by model year. The best way to ensure that you are
ordering the proper replacement for your alternator is to verify your engine’s
mounting configuration and alternator dimensions prior to purchasing your Balmar
replacement alternator.
Belt Types & Sizes
Engine drive belt width is also a critical factor when selecting a Balmar replacement alternator. Commonly installed
vee belts and multi-groove serpentine belts have specific limitations in regard to amperage and horsepower
loads they can support. As a rule of thumb, a 12-volt alternator’s ratio of output to horsepower load is 25:1. In other
words, an alternator that’s producing 25 amps will apply approximately one horsepower of load to its drive belt.
When installing an alternator upgrade, it is essential that the alternator selected is limited to the capacity of its
drive belt. Failure to do so will result in premature belt wear, belt slippage, and potential damage to the alternator
and engine. The following chart provides a general guideline for alternator selection, based on belt type and
width. Note that dual vee belts and serpentine belts support substantially larger loads:
Belt Type Belt Width Max HP Load Highest Recommended Alternator Output
Sgl. Vee 3/8" 3.5 80-Amp @ 12-Volt, 30-Amp @ 24-Volt
Sgl. Vee 1/2" 4.5 110-Amp @ 12-Volt, 45-Amp @ 24-Volt
Dual Vee 1/2" 12 310-Amp @ 12-Volt, 220-Amp @ 24-Volt
Serpentine 6-Groove N/A 210-Amps @ 12-Volt, 100-Amps @ 24-Volt
Serpentine 8-Groove N/A 310-Amps @ 12-Volt, 220-Amps @ 24-Volt
Battery Technology
Each marine battery type, whether it’s a gel, Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM), deep-cycle flooded or standard flooded
starting battery, has it’s own unique charging characteristic, which impacts on the type and size of alternator
needed to ensure optimal charging efficiency. Where a deep-cycle flooded battery is able to accept approximately
25 percent of it’s available capacity, an AGM battery may accept as much as 50 percent of available capacity. As
such, an AGM bank of equal capacity to a deep-cycle flooded bank may demand twice the amount of alternator
output. Newer technologies, such as Lithium Ion and TPPL batteries feature even greater demands due to their
nearly unlimited ability to accept charging current.
– 4 –
D
Battery Technology (continued)
As a result, these newer battery types MUST be charged with a large case or extra-large case alternator
due to their nearly limitless demands. Balmar has responded to the unique needs of these new battery
technologies with a Lithium-ready alternator/regulator combination (see rear cover) that’s designed to meet the
needs of these new batteries.
Battery Capacity
In addition to battery technology, battery bank capacity has a dramatic impact on the size and type of alternator
required to keep the batteries healthy. House battery capacity is usually calculated based on the ability to
meet approximately three day’s worth of typical demand -- or more, if the vessel is unlikely to be plugged into
shorepower charging for extended periods.
Typical DC Electrical Loads
The chart at right provides typical DC marine loads. Accurate load
calculations require precise measurement of your vessel’s equipment.
(Shown In Amps Per Hour)
Refer to equipment manuals for actual load ratings, or consult with a
VHF Receive 1.5
qualified marine electrician to determine your actual needs. Keep in mind
VHF Transmit 5.0
that every 100 amps of discharge will require 115 amps of charging current
CB Receive 1.0
to replenish.
CB Transmit 5.0
In most cases, your alternator’s output should be equal to the maximum
SSB Receive 1.5
available capacity of your battery bank. In other words, if your house battery
SSB Transmit 25.0
bank is made up of deep cycle flooded batteries with a capacity rating of
400 amp/hours, the maximum acceptance rate of those batteries would
Depth Finder 1.0
be approximately 25 percent, or 100 amps, the ideal alternator would also
GPS .50
be rated at 100 amps. On the other hand, if your house bank consists of
Radar 4.0
400 amp/hour capacity AGM batteries, the maximum available capacity Video Sounder 4.0
would be approximately 45 percent of 400, or roughly 180 amp hours.
Weather Fax 2.5
To maximize charging efficiency, a 180-amp rated alternator would be
required. Unfortunately, in many vessels, mounting a large-case alternator
is not feasible.
Limitations On Alternator Output
Wind Speed .10
The size and type of alternator drive belt may limit the rated output of the
alternator you choose. If your battery capacity is substantially larger than Steaming Light 1.0
the output allowed based on belt size, it may be necessary to reduce loads
in order to lessen the required battery capacity, or it may be necessary to
Many boaters have found that adding a second alternator to their engine
In twin engine applications, Balmar’s Centerfielder II offers an excellent
solution for balanced charge control over dual alternators. By monitoring
port and starboard alternators and regulators, and controlling field output
to both alternators, the Centerfielder II makes it possible to direct the combined output from both alternators
to charge a central house battery bank. Please note: when using the Centerfielder II in any twin engine application,
it is essential that it is used in conjunction with Max Charge MC-612, MC-614 or MC-624 regulators only.
DO NOT use MC-614 regulators with older Centerfielder units.
Multi-Stage Voltage Regulation
What do Balmar smart regulators do
Smart voltage regulators, like Balmar’s Max Charge and
ARS-5, use electrical current to magnetize an alternator’s
rotor and stator. The alternator’s rotor creates alternating
(AC) current as it turns within the stator that’s converted
into DC electrical energy which can used to charge
batteries. During the time that the alternator is charging
the batteries, the voltage regulator constantly monitors
the battery voltage and adjusts alternator output to bring
batteries to a fully charged state.
Unlike a simple, single-stage regulator found in an
automotive alternator, Max Charge and ARS-5 regulators
are designed to provide specific multi-voltage charging
profiles that are customized for many of the different
battery technologies commonly found in marine vessels.
As the alternator and regulator provide the battery/
batteries with a source of charging energy -- and the
level of discharge is diminished -- the batteries develop
greater resistance. The regulator works to overcome
that resistance by increasing the charging voltage to the
highest level that the battery can safely be exposed to.
One of the core responsibilities of the voltage regulator
is to ensure that the charging voltage meets, but does not
exceed that (target) voltage.
How do Balmar smart regulators work
Typically, the regulator begins its cycle when the engine
starts. After a short start delay (which allows the engine
and belts to warm up), the regulator begins to apply field
current to the alternator’s positive brush, causing the
alternator to supply charging output to the batteries.
After charging for a set time period, the regulator begins
to perform calculations based on three primary criteria:
1. Whether the system has reached the target voltage for
that battery technology
2. Whether it has been able to maintain that target voltage
for specific time period, and,
3. How hard the regulator is having to drive the alternator
to maintain that voltage (field percentage).
If, at the time of calculation, the Balmar regulator is able
to meet its target goals, the regulator will advance to the
next stage of charging requirements. If not, the regulator
will continue to drive the alternator at a high level until the
calculated goals are met.
How many stages of charging
Max Charge and ARS-5 voltage regulators provide three
primary stages of charging: Bulk, Absorption, and Float.
Bulk stage is when most of the charging occurs, and has
the highest voltage target of the three. Depending on
battery type, bulk voltages range from 14.1 volts to 14.6
volts in a 12-volt system, and can last from just a few
minutes to several hours, depending on loads, battery
capacity and depth of discharge.
Absorption stage, is usually two tenths of a volt below
bulk stage, and allows the regulator to help bring the
batteries to a nearly full charge without subjecting them
to undue stress. Batteries are held in absorption stage
until the regulator sees that the batteries have met all of
their calculated target goals.
Float stage provides a level of charging that’s typically a
volt below bulk target voltage, and is meant to maintain
the battery (and address ship loads) once it reaches a fully
charged state. After a given time, the Balmar regulator
will make calculations based on Float target voltages. If
the regulator is having difficulty maintaining its target
goals (if the voltage is too low, or if the regulator has to
drive the alternator above a percentage of its capacity)
the regulator will revert to the Absorption stage.
What Batteries Are Supported
In addition to a factory default program, Max Charge
regulators offer selectable preset programs for six
battery types; standard flooded, deep cycle flooded, gel,
AGM, spiral wound (Optima), and for voltage sensitive
halogen systems. The ARS-5 regulator provides programs
for deep cycle flooded, AGM, gel, and spiral wound Optima
batteries, in addition to its default program.
In addition to preset program selections, all Balmar multistage
voltage regulators feature extensive advanced
programming modes, where all aspects of charging can
be tailored to meet individual system requirements.
Max Charge voltage regulators can also support special
functions like battery conditioning and equalization.
How are Balmar regulators programmed
Each Balmar multi-stage regulator features an epoxy
potted reed switch, which is controlled with a magnetic
programming tool included with each regulator. All
regulators are equipped with bright, easy-to-read 3-digit
numeric LEDs, which support both operational and
programming functions.
Do I need temperature sensing
All Balmar multi-stage regulators offer the ability to
sense alternator and battery temperatures when used
with optional MC-TS-A and MC-TS-B sensor cables.
Alternator temperature sensing enables the regulator to
automatically reduce field output if the alternator exceeds
safe operating temperature.
In order to maximize charging efficiency, battery
temperature sensing allows the regulator to automatically
adjust charging voltages, either up or down, based on
battery core temperature. This is essential when charging
sealed battery types, like AGM and gel cell batteries. If
an over-temperature condition occurs at the batteries,
a sensor-equipped Balmar regulator will shut down
charging, and activate a 500mA lamp signal, which can
be used to support a visual or audible warning device.
Both features add a substantial increase in charging safety
and efficiency for both the batteries and the charging
system.
Charge Balancing & Sharing Devices
In addition to high output alternators and smart voltage
regulation, Balmar offers two valuable additions for your
charging system. The Digital Duo Charge and Centerfielder
II each provide an effective tool to ensure that all of your
vessel’s batteries receive optimal charging.
• Charging Current To 30 Amps
• For 12-Volt Or 24-Volt Systems
• Programs For Four Battery Types
• Optional Solenoid Control
Digital Duo Charge - DDC-12/24
The DDC-12/24 offers the smartest system yet for current and voltage controlled charging between the house
and starting batteries -- eliminating the need for an isolator or battery switches.
During charging, the Duo Charge monitors voltage at the house battery. When voltage exceeds the set minimum
(typically 13V in a 12-volt system and 26V in a 24-volt system), the Duo Charge automatically engages, providing
up to 30 amps to the starting battery. When no charge source is present, the Duo Charge separates the batteries,
so the starting battery won’t be accidentally discharged.
Optional solenoid control enables higher charging output when required (solenoid is not included). Includes input/
output wiring. Preset programs for gel, AGM, standard flooded and deep cycle flooded batteries allow mixing of
house and start battery technologies. *Battery temperature sensing requires optional MC-TS-B sensor cable. 1
year limited warranty. Visit www.balmar.net for additional information.
Centerfielder II
The Centerfielder balances twin engine
charging systems by monitoring port and
starboard voltage regulators.
When both alternators and voltage
regulators are working, the Centerfielder
II automatically splits field output from the
dominant regulator to both alternators, making it
possible to charge a single house battery bank with the combined output
of both alternators. The Centerfielder II works in both 12-volt and 24-volt applications, and includes detailed wiring
instructions along with larger gauge wire replacements for port and starboard regulator power wires. Use only with
Max Charge MC-612, MC-614, or MC-624 voltage regulators. Do not install in systems utilizing internally regulated
alternators. 1 year limited warranty. For more information about the Centerfielder II, visit www.balmar.net.
Lithium Ion Battery
Charging Package
• Model 97EHD-12-265 Alternator
• Max Charge MC-614 Regulator
• MC-TS-A Temperature Sensor
Perceived by many in the industry
to be the “ultimate answer” for
marine electrical needs, Lithium
Ion batteries provide an astounding
capacity for rapid energy
deployment and equally effective
charging rates. But, as many
electrical technicians have found,
Lithium Ion batteries create their
own set of challenges.
As a new and somewhat untried
technol0gy, these powerful
batteries have yet to find any
standards for charging -- so profiles,
charging voltages, temperature
and safety limitations vary greatly
by manufacturer. In many cases,
there is still much disagreement
in regard to the exact profile these
batteries require to charge safely,
or efficiently.
There seems to be one constant,
though. These batteries require a
lot of charging current, and voltage
regulation that’s both responsive
and precise.
Balmar responded to numerous
requests by battery manufacturers,
designers and boatbuilders to
design a DC charging system that’s
capable of responding to the unique
needs of this emerging technology.
To meet these needs, we have
developed a new generation of
Max Charge voltage regulation
that targets the specific needs of
Lithium Ion batteries.
Unlike most commonly used battery
technologies, Lithium Ion batteries
will accept as much available
charging current as possible at
a fixed voltage value throughout
the entire time they are capable
of receiving a charge. (Imagine a
“bottomless” cup of coffee at your
local cafe.) At the end of the charge
period, many require the charger
to completely shut off.
The Max Charge regulator program
replicates that as closely as possible
by maintaining the proper charging
voltage until the regulator’s field
current drops below a given set
point, at which time the voltage
target is reduced to a lower voltage
level. By doing so, the alternator and
regulator can effectively operate
within the limitations of normal
engine operation while ensuring an
effective charge.
Balmar has bundled the Max Charge
regulator with the high-output
97EHD-12-265 alternator, a model
that’s well equipped to support the
heavy demands of marine Lithium
Ion battery banks. In addition, the
Lithium Ion Battery Charging
Package includes the MC-TS-A
Alternator Temperature Sensor
which ensures that the regulator
will automatically respond if the
extraordinary demands of these
new batteries cause the alternator
to exceed optimal operating
temperatures.
