Bringing together 70 paintings that defined 19th-century French impressionism, the show includes masterpieces by Manet and Monet, and more than 20 paintings by Renoir such as Girl With Fan (pictured right). Grouped by genre, the paintings include beautiful landscapes and seascapes such as Monet’s The Cliffs At Étretat, as well as everyday scenes, still lifes, nudes and self portraits by the exhibition’s most prominent artists. Life’s rich tapestry Turner-prize winner Grayson Perry’s Walthamstow Tapestry (pictured) finds its spiritual home this summer at the William Morris Gallery – the north-east London birthplace of 19th-century arts and crafts movement founder Morris. Inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, this colourful 15-metre-long woven depiction of consumerism and contemporary life in Walthamstow, is the first work to go on display in the new exhibition spaces (until 23 Sep). Recently revamped to appear as it would have done in Morris’s time, the gallery is a real hidden gem for arts enthusiasts. It contains more than 600 objects including Morris’s letters, designs and textiles, as well as works by his famous friends. William Morris Gallery, p. 74. Grand designs From a funky new London doubledecker bus, to a pavilion made almost entirely from seeds, Heatherwick Studio has become the last word in British contemporary design. Led by Thomas Heatherwick, who has been described as a ‘Leonardo Da Vinci of our times’, the studio has broken the mould in everything from architecture to product design. In the V&A’s major exhibition Heatherwick Studio: Designing The Extraordinary, more than 150 works go on display for the first time (until 30 Sep). Arranged to resemble a design workshop, exhibits include complete pieces like The Spun – chairs resembling spinning tops – and key parts from larger works like Seed Cathedral.
