Spring/Summer Newsletter Issue 26 April 2013
2012 - 2013 Target Achieved!
Thank you to everyone who has worked
so tirelessly during the past 12 months
to help us achieve our target of £75,000.
The difficulties of fundraising, in the
current economic climate was not
helped by last year’s atrocious summer
which resulted in many local events
being cancelled. We are keeping our
fingers crossed for better weather
this year. As a result we have a busy
summer planned (a list of fetes and
collections is listed overleaf).
This year will be made easier thanks to The Rotary Club of
Milton Keynes Grand Union (MKGU) who have given us a very
generous donation towards the purchase of a new gazebo which
will benefit our helpers on damp and chilly days.
As usual it is impossible to individually thank everyone.
However, a mention must go to our champion fundraiser John
Kembery who raised a further £1,165 during the second half of
last year during which time he was waiting to go into hospital
for heart surgery. This brings his 12 year total to £44,500. We
wish John a healthy 2013.
For those of you who enjoy a quiz the names Janette Chapman
and Marian Boardman will probably be familiar. Since they
retired they have continued to hold quiz nights in New Bradwell
and last year raised over £1,000. They will be running our
Quiz Night on 9th June (details overleaf). We received further
donations from Jan Cade and the Strutting Stars Line Dancers
and from the Newport Pagnell Mayor’s charity fund.
An Evening of Strictly Willen
On Friday 8th March, the Friends hosted a night of fun,
food and Latin dancing, raising £440 for the charity! The
night saw upwards of forty people shaking their Latin tailfeathers
to some ‘have a go’ Salsa beats.
The evening featured a lovely three course meal, followed
by a quiz, a raffle and then a number of Latin dance
performances by the Almas Latinas dance troupe. The
dance troupe then proceeded to get everyone up learning
a few moves themselves! Thankfully, no-one was too
shy to give it a go, and one rather hesitant participant
afterwards commented, “why haven’t I ever tried this
before, it was great fun!”
The evening was a roaring success and following such
positive comments from those who attended, will be one
surely not to be missed in future! A big thank you to all
those who helped to make the evening possible, especially
to those who came and supported us; as well as to the Kiln
Farm Pub for the use of their venue, to the Almas Latinas
dance troupe and to DJ John Martini for his mobile Disco
that really kept the party atmosphere going! Thank you all,
and I look forward to seeing you all at our future events!
Members’ subscriptions - A plea from our Treasurer
Please could members who have not paid their 2013 subscriptions send it as soon as possible. If you have mislaid the renewal
form don’t worry just send a cheque made payable to “The Friends of Willen Hospice” together with your name and address to
“The Treasurer, Friends of Willen Hospice” at the address given at the end of this newsletter. The subscriptions for 2013 remain
unchanged at £10 for members and £5 for senior citizens. You can become a Life Member with a one-off payment of £75.
Membership is an important way of supporting the work of the Friends.
Annual General Meeting
The Friends AGM will be held on Thursday 23 May at 7.30pm in the Day Hospice. All members are invited to attend.
After the AGM there will be an opportunity to meet and chat with Committee members.

A Quizzing Year
Do you enjoy pub quizzes or testing your knowledge on a wide range of topics If so, our Quiz Nights
are just for you.
The first one is being held on Sunday 28 April at 7.00pm at Coronation Hall, Stoke Road, Bletchley
MK2 3AB. £10 a team and maximum of six people per team. The evening will include the quiz with
prizes for 1st and 2nd place and a bonus ball game. Refreshments will be available to purchase on
the night.
The summer quiz will be held on 9th June at Kiln Farm Pub.

Quiz Sheet – a Journey around the British Coastline
For just £1.00 and a stamped addressed envelope you can enjoy solving the clues, all answers are the names of town on the UK
coast. All quiz sheets with the correct answers received by 23 May will be included in a draw. The first prize is a £20 Marks and
Spencer voucher, the second prize a £15 voucher. Entry details are included on the back of each sheet.
We will issue a second quiz sheet in October to correspond with our Voices for Hospices concert. If you are a music buff this one
may appeal to you.
To obtain a copy of the quiz sheet write to The Friends of Willen Hospice at the address below, enclosing your cheque and SAE.
Please mark your envelope ‘Quiz’.
Donating is Easy
Donations to the Friends can now be made via the MyDonate website. If you decide to take part in or
hold a sponsored event on behalf of the Friends, e.g. run a marathon or if you have a significant birthday
or anniversary and would rather your friends and relatives donated money to the Friends than bought
presents My Donate is easy for them to use.
Go to http://www.btplc.com/mydonate/index.aspx this takes you to the main page to either set up your
own fundraising event; sponsor someone else who is doing a sponsored event or just to donate to a
charity. To find us look for Friends of Willen Hospice. We already have the site pre-populated with all
our charity information and once the charity is selected the page details information about our aims and
activities.
