Introduction
Founded in 1911, Tsinghua University--one of China’s most
famous universities--is situated in former Qing Dynasty imperial
gardens surrounded by many historical sites in northwest Beijing.
Tsinghua’s evolution over the past 96 years has been closely linked
to China’s development. Tsinghua University today subscribes to the
education ideal of comprehensive mastery of Chinese and foreign,
classic and modern knowledge in the sciences and the humanities. This
ideal and its inspiring mottos “Self-discipline and Social Commitment,”
“Rigor, Diligence, Veracity, and Creativity,” “Actions Speak Louder
Than Words,” and its core spirit “Patriotism, Devotion and Pursuing
Excellence”, have greatly influenced Tsinghua’s development.
The university has produced more than 100,000 graduates, many
of whom have become distinguished scholars and leaders in all walks

建 校 之 初 最 早 的 主 校 门 ,1911 年 建 成 ,1991 年 恢 复

清 华 大 学 的 前 身 清 华 学 堂 , 始 建 于 1911 年 , 是 清 政 府 利 用 “ 庚 子
赔 款 ” 退 款 建 立 的 留 美 预 备 学 校 。1912 年 更 名 为 清 华 学 校 。1928 年
更 名 为 国 立 清 华 大 学 。
1937 年 抗 日 战 争 爆 发 后 , 清 华 大 学 与 北 京 大 学 、 南 开 大 学 南 迁 并
联 合 组 建 长 沙 临 时 大 学 ,1938 年 迁 至 昆 明 , 改 名 为 国 立 西 南 联 合 大 学 。
1946 年 清 华 大 学 迁 回 清 华 园 原 址 复 校 , 设 有 文 、 法 、 理 、 工 、 农 等 5
个 学 院 。
1952 年 , 全 国 高 校 院 系 调 整 后 , 清 华 大 学 成 为 一 所 多 科 性 工 业 大
学 , 重 点 为 国 家 培 养 工 程 技 术 人 才 , 被 誉 为 “ 工 程 师 的 摇 篮 ”。
1978 年 以 来 , 清 华 大 学 进 入 了 一 个 蓬 勃 发 展 的 新 时 期 , 逐 步 恢 复
了 理 科 、 经 济 管 理 和 人 文 社 会 类 学 科 。1999 年 原 中 央 工 艺 美 术 学 院 并
History
Tsinghua University was instituted in 1911 as Tsinghua Xuetang,
a government sponsored preparatory school for training students
who were selected to study in the United States. The name National
Tsinghua University was adopted in 1928.
The Resistance War against the Japanese Invasion in 1937
shattered the serenity of the campus and forced Tsinghua to move to
Kunming. There, with Peking University and Nankai University, it
formed the Southwest Associated University. In 1946, Tsinghua moved
back to its original Peking location. At that time, the University had
26 departments under five faculties that included arts, law, science,
engineering, and agricultural science.
As part of the nationwide higher education restructuring in 1952,

History
Tsinghua University was molded into a polytechnic
institution focused on engineering. It became known as
China’s “cradle of engineers” due to the success of its
faculty and students.
Tsinghua University has flourished since 1978 with
the resumption of departments in science, economics,
humanities and social sciences, and law. In 1999, the
former Central Academy of Arts and Design of China
joined Tsinghua University.
In 1993, Tsinghua established its goal to build
itself into a world-class university. With the support
of the national 211 Project and 985 Program, Tsinghua
has taken new steps in discipline development, talent
cultivation, faculty development, scientific research, and
international cooperation.

The Tsinghua University undergraduate program offers a general professional
education with a broad scope. Instruction is research-oriented. Students are encouraged
to make research an integral part of their studies. Aiming at improving students’
consciousness of innovation and creativity, Tsinghua teaches students in accordance
with their aptitude. The university adopts various models to foster an innovative spirit
among its students. Currently Tsinghua offers over 60 undergraduate programs and has
currently more than 13,000 undergraduate students.

Based on high level research activities, Tsinghua University graduate education
seeks to develop the students’ capacity for creative and innovative thinking. At
present, the university has developed a comprehensive system to provide graduate
academic degree programs. There are also professional degree programs to meet
society’s needs. Tsinghua currently enrolls nearly 18,000 graduate students. There are
among these more than 5,000 students working towards doctoral degrees, nearly 6,000
towards academic masters degrees, and more than 7,000 towards professional masters
degrees.

Tsinghua University actively
promotes international cooperation and
exchanges. It has signed agreements
with many prestigious universities
throughout the world. The cooperation
includes mutual visits, collaborative
scientific research, joint education
programs, and extensive exchange
programs. Each year, many overseas
scholars, state and international
organization leaders, and CEOs of
international companies visit Tsinghua.
The University also maintains several
high level research collaborations with
world-renowned universities and
corporations. The number of teachers
and students going abroad has also
increased. As Tsinghua becomes more
international in its culture and structure,
more and more foreign students come
to study here at the undergraduate and
graduate levels.

The New Library
Library
The Tsinghua University library system is composed of the
main University Library and professional libraries in human science,
economics and management, law, architecture, art, and medicine.
It covers 39,000 square meters of construction area. The library
maintains a rich collection of more than 3,500,000 volumes. Among its
collection of treasures are Chinese and foreign ancient books, oracle
bones, bronzes, calligraphy, and drawings by famous people. The
library has the most extensive digital resource mirror sites among
Chinese universities. It provides services to more than 400 universities
throughout the nation.

Tsinghua University Campus Network
The TUNET (Tsinghua University Network) is the biggest campus
computer network in China. Based on the campus net, Tsinghua’s
advanced education administration system manages student
registration, course selection, and student academic records. The
campus Intranet-based online classroom provides a software platform
upon which teachers can utilize digitized and web-based instructional
resources. The large-scale computer laboratory network provides
students with a user friendly learning environment.

Alleviating Poverty Project
In recent years, Tsinghua University has become more deeply involved in
social service. The university has strengthened its collaboration with provinces and
cities and municipalities throughout China and corporations at home and abroad.
It has accelerated technology transfer to aid and support the country's economic
development. The Tsinghua Science Park is the only Class A university science park in
China.
The School of Continuing Education provides various educational and training
programs. By using modern information technology, the School has established
a network of modern distance education instructional stations in more than 100
impoverished counties throughout China.

Campus Life
Tsinghua University places great emphasis on the students’ allround

The Campus
The garden-like campus of Tsinghua features beautiful scenery
of trees and lakes covering more than 3 million square meters. Old, in
many cases historic, structures and modern new buildings stand sideby-side
on the well-tended grounds. The total area of the university is
more than 4 million square meters and the construction area is more
than 2.5 million square meters.
