H O O F P R I N T S On New Year’s day of 1975 George Kleinknecht, Jack Gunther and Bruce MacCormack were discussing the feasibility of starting an Elks Lodge in Manasquan. The need of a lodge in this area could be foreseen by these three men, since there were five separate towns without one. A call was made to Peter Grecco who in turn notified Step Avedisian, new Lodge Committeeman and Nick Kewitt, District Deputy of the South Central District. They attended our first meeting on January 16th, at the Manasquan Borough Hall. At this meeting we had approximately 25 men who were interested in forming a Lodge. By he meeting of April 7th, a sufficient number of applications for membership had been received to petition the Grand Lodge for dispensation and on April 1st., Grand Exalted Ruler Gerald Strohm, of Fresno, California, issued the dispensation and the organization became known as Manasquan Lodge 2534 under dispensation. Bruce MacCormack was appointed chairman and Robert Farley and William Allen were appointed Secretary and Treasurer respectively. The installation of the Lodge was set for June 1st at the Allaire Racquet Club, State Highway 138 in Wall Township. There have been many many men that have helped this Lodge grow from that handful of 25, but out PER’s were instrumental in starting and maintaining some activities that marked the success of Manasquan Lodge 2534. Some Highlights include… - Bruce MacCormack, our first ER, initiated our now famous Charity Ball for the Handicapped Children’s Fund. The highlight of the evening was the song “Pennies from Heaven” and all present were invited to throw pennies on the dance flow. - Ed Lyons, our second ER, established another tradition—our ever growing Family Picnic. - Roger Knox, No. 3 ER, began our Thursday night dinner and monthly Pancake Breakfast. - Our next ER was Pat Rozko and during his term we had our first dinner theater, “Come Blow Your Horn”, which was a howling success, our first Car Raffle for the Handicapped Children’s Fund featured a T-Bird won by brother John Hyde. - Bill Kanes’ reign was highlighted by a visit from The Grand Exalted Ruler, H. Forster Sears. - Al Dompiere, ER No. % parleyed all activities into a remarkable year of membership growth. - George Tootell’s tenure marked the beginning of “Fight Night” - a highly successful fund raiser. - F. Morgan Hines at the National Convention in Hawaii, was instrumental in obtaining Elk support and backing for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty. - Walter Litzebauer responded dramatically to “Ayuda” and we’ll never forget our visit from the Oklahoma Indians. His success was crowned just recently with a first place National Elks award publicizing this event. - George A. Beecrofts’ tenure marked the 10th anniversary Gala Celebration. The 1st Squan 2534 Glee Club started by Brother Ed Leneper with Jo Ann Ray the musical director. - Richard Sheridan, receiving 1st Place for Best Float in Wildwood -”JOLLY CORKS” and expecting the All American Award for ER George Beecroft, the clothed and medical supply drive for Sioux Indians of South Dakota. - John R. Casagrande, the participation V o l u m e X X X V I I I N o . 4 • P a g e 8 INSTITUTION OF MANASQUAN LODGE 2534—JUNE 1, 1973—Allaire Racquet Club A History of Manasquan Lodge 2534 Written in June 1995 for the Lodge’s 20th Anniversary by GEORGE TOOTELL, PER in the town’s Centennial celebration parade and pageant. Being the recipient of a plaque of appreciation from the chief of the 15,000 White Mountain Apache tribe of Arizona. - Thomas D. Hinz, participated in the 1st Special Olympics at Sea Girt Camp for our lodge with the “Carnival of Fun’, and a Lodge plaque presented to New York City police officer Steven McDonald at Belmar St. Patrick’s Day Parade. - Our next ER was James J. Mastrian, Jr. the 1st Annual Veterans Ball was held by the National Service Committee and the presentation of the Rose Garden to the town of Manasquan. - Elwood. W. Vail’s tenure was the installation of our new entrance sign at the street and the 1st Clip-A-Thon fundraiser with the Lodge. - Ronald A. Deluca, made a presentation of a check to The Desert Storm/ Desert Shield Family Foundation of Sea Girt. The 1st Pig Roast was held on Labor Day Weekend, becoming an annual event. - Gregory A. Flynn, initiated Adopt-A- Highway Program and the purchase of the first two special beach chairs for the beach of Manasquan and began the Adopt-A-Beach Program. - Robert Zoll, had the 1st Corn & Beer Party, the dedication of Elks Handicapped Beach and Flag Day Ritual. Daniel A. Moinihan’s year marked the 1st Annual Street Roast held on Memorial Day Weekend as an annual event and the Elks Camp Moore Day at the Handicapped Beach, also becoming an annual event for our lodge. The presentation of a “McGruff” uniform for the Manasquan Police Department We can all be proud of these men and all Elks who helped along the way to achieve the position of honor and respect our lodge has gained.
