City’s Best Ready for 2012 Charlotte City

The heat of Charlotte in mid-
August could feel like a cool
spring day compared to the
high-level degree of competition
expected in the 53rd Charlotte City
Amateur Golf Tournament.
Defending Champion, Brett
Boner will return to highlight
another strong field for the three-day
event beginning on Friday, August
17th Cedarwood Country Club.
The re-designed Carmel Country
Club South Course will challenge
the field in the second round, while
the Charlotte Country Club will
again host the final round on Sunday,
August 19th.
Boner, who had finished
second in the City event
two previous years before
winning last year, outdueled
his brother-in-law
Stephen Woodard at
Charlotte Country Club
to win by five strokes. His
three-day total was 8-under
par 204, highlighted by a
record-setting 62 at Myers
Park in the second round.
Woodard kept it close
through the front nine on
the final day in route to
a Sunday-best 68, but
couldn’t catch Boner on the
back side and finished with
a 3-under par total of 209.

Boner, a former professional
mini-tour player and college player
at Auburn, confirmed that the 62 at
Myers Park was a personal best and
a key to his victory.
“I had to battle in the final round
after that really low round to build
my lead.” stated Boner. “I knew
Stephen would come at me hard and
he did cut my lead to just 2 shots
heading to the back nine. I just
relied on playing solid golf and not
letting some
timid play spoil
my chance to
win.”
In addition
to Boner, several
other former
champions
return in the
qualifying field
this year
including 2010
champion Brent
Landry, 2009

Braxton McLennan, director of
the Charlotte City Amateur Tournament,
said. “We’re very proud of the
growth of the City Amateur since
our re-birth in 2008. We’ve always
said that if you get the courses, the
players will come. The three
participating country clubs this
year, and the ones allowing us to
play their courses in the past, have
been excellent supporters and a
big reason our tournament is one
of the best amateur events in
North Carolina.”
The Donald Ross designed Charlotte
Country Club will host the City Am finals
for the second straight year August 19th.
