I was in hopes of finding some golf locations to share with you, but found out that in Tuscany a golf course is not a priority since the land is primarily used for vineyards. One golf course owner that I contacted said, “Golf hasn’t caught on in Italy yet. Outside of the Molinari brothers, Edoardo and Francesco, no golfer of any note hails from Italy.” The Molinari brothers were both members of the 2010 European Ryder Cup team that defeated the Americans at the Celtic Manor Resort in the city of Newport, Wales. A late sin- Edoardo Francesco gles win by Edoardo over rookie Ricky Fowler helped the Europeans win the Cup 14 ½ to 13 ½. There are fourteen nice 18-hole par-72 courses in Tuscany, but only a handful are listed as “golf courses to play” in the region. The best is the Golf Club Castelfalfi close to the medieval city of San Gimignano. Called a mountain course, it features the subtle elevation changes of Tuscany with picturesque scenery. Also to be considered are: Golf Club Ugolino: southeast of Florence – The oldest Italian golf course Golf Club Toscano: north of Grosseto – Best new course in Italy Argentario Golf Club: in Orbetello – Hilly landscape of Mount Argentario Saturnia Golf Club: near Grosseto – Land of the Etruscans Looking for golf in Tuscany may not be high on your “bucket list” but the landscape, vineyards, food, people and an occasional golf course to play, makes this ancient region south of Florence and northeast of Rome a place to remember. I had to smile when the description “mountain courses” came out about several golf courses in Tuscany, after all some of the finest highaltitude golf is available right here in the Carolinas.
