CR-V @ Melaka Factory
HANDCRAFTED
PERFECTION
Here at the Honda Melaka factory, CR-V production is a
hands-on affair. Step inside this manual production facility for a
special insider’s view, and meet the people that make the car.
with dreams I 03

our newest dream
A timekeeper stands with a megaphone.
She checks her stopwatch, then
consults a clipboard. Time is running
fast for the first car on the CR-V
production check. In air heavy with the
scent of fresh rubber and new
car, the timekeeper’s megaphone
crackles to life.
This is the scene inside the RM170
million Honda Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.
production plant. Opened on 30
January 2003 at the HICOM Pegoh
Industrial Park in Alor Gajah, Melaka,
the plant is architecturally impressive
and thoroughly modern, covering 80
acres of land.
But what really makes this Honda
factory special is the fact that the
production process is almost entirely
done by hand. Here, the people make
all the difference.
It’s been that way since the
beginning, four years ago when the very
first vehicle rolled out the front door.
That car was a CR-V, like the one on the
line right now. And as the heavy engine
block is raised hydraulically into its
gleaming black shell, it has started to
take the familiar CR-V shape.
This mass production check will
take a minimum of two shifts to
complete. It’s a journey of creation, one
that began with nothing more than raw
steel and a dream.
In this first step, associates along the
line wield huge spot welders, their heavy
industrial weight managed by yellow
pulleys and counterbalances as a burning
04 I with dreams
WELDING
electric strike fuses panel to panel.
It’s a process crucial to the final
strength, safety and quality of any car,
and the care and dedication of Honda
associates is clearly evident.
According to Mr. Kenji Yoshimura,
overseer of general welding machines
and framework, the quality control
process for weld strength is
extremely demanding.
“Whenever we start on a new model,
we first weld everything together and
then pull it all apart to make sure the
spot welds are in the right places,” said
Yoshimura. “All welds must also be
tested individually, and each test-piece
must withstand an average force of
1.5 to 2kN.”
With one CR-V containing over 370
individual welds, it’s a QC process that
can take a full week. Every detail is
carefully examined, with no room for error.
Roslan bin Ab. Wahab, department
head of welding and a pioneer at the
Melaka factory who’s “been here since
day one,” describes the difference
quality makes.
“In order to get a good weld, you
need to look at two things: the strength
of the soft spot, and the diameter of the
nugget – that point of welded contact
between two panels. What’s unique to
Honda is that we use the same spot
units, but change the current for each
model. That’s our secret to a stronger,
safer car.
“Once all welds are completed, the
finished unit is run through our portable
layout machine and compared to data
received from the supplier, checking for
consistency before we start our
Roslan bin Ab. Wahab
Head of Welding
production event,” Roslan said.
Producing about 50 units per shift,
the welding department averages 100
units a day but on this first run the target
is 30 completed CR-Vs. Just before the
metal shells enter the paint department,
20 pairs of eyes gather to go over every
detail of the line’s first CR-V.
Then it’s time for the next step.
Coloured pens are used in the QC process, to ensure
everything has been checked.

P A I N T I N G
A grooved track on the shop floor
guides steel-grey bodies past a sliding
door and into the next stage in CR-V
development: the painting department.
The process sees ED (electrodeposition),
primer, base and clear
coats applied to the body. Zainal Abidin
Tumeran, who’s been painting for nearly
five years and has served as quality
leader for two months, explains that
quality is the top priority.
“The first step is a pre-treatment that
involves cleaning and degreasing to
remove oil and dust from the body. From
here we apply the ED,” Zainal Abidin
said, “then a sealant line to reduce
vibrations while preventing water and
noise from entering the cabin.”
In one of the few departments in this
factory to use automation, robots apply
The CR-V is sprayed clean when it first enters the painting department. Then it’s
ready for coats that protect and beautify.
surfacer and top coats with far less
resulting waste. Still, the final QC falls to
the associates. “We continually check
and re-check the entire surface, since
even a tiny bit of dust or fibre will show up
as a defect,” Zainal Abidin said. “After
painting, we still have one more inspection
– because some errors cannot be seen
until the paint reveals them.”
According to Othman bin Jaafar, an
assistant manager with 20 years of
experience and Honda’s head of painting,
any errors are quickly addressed. “We
look for two defects: FM, which is any
foreign material, and dust. Humps or
dents are immediately repaired,” Othman
said. “We also check to see that the
colour is accurate to our sample, using an
X-rite colour detection device.”
In the final paint inspection,
associates from both welding and
painting assemble to examine the CR-V.
process.
our newest dream
A S S E M B L Y
At the Melaka factory, which by
automotive standards is a smaller
production facility, assembly is grouped
into three sections: first, wiring and interior;
second, chassis; and third, exterior and
final assembly. It’s here that over 10,000
individual parts come together.
Each CR-V moves along a U-shaped
conveyor at precise 9.5-minute intervals,
following a pulse so important that Mr.
Muchima, who’s spent 25 years with
Honda and the last eight months here
in frame and engine assembly,
has given it a name.
“Rhythm. Here, getting a smooth and
regular rhythm is crucial to making this
CR-V dream come true. If one step is
skipped or missed it can create quite a
problem, so everyone receives regular
training to maintain a smooth rhythm. We
pay total attention at every step, and
perform regular function checks to make
sure everything is okay,” said Muchima.
As the engine is installed, associates
armed with coloured pens tick off
crucial check points, making sure that
nothing was missed. Then the seats,
tyres and glass come together, followed
by the addition of oil, petrol and
coolant. A final check falls to each
associate, according to Zakaria bin
Arshad, department head of assembly.
“The last steps include checks to
see that the engine is 100 per cent
firing. We also do a complete check of
the whole body, including wipers, lights,
doors, brakes… really everything,”
Zakaria said.
After a long and gruelling process, full
of countless checks and rechecks, the
CR-V is complete and rolling. It’s now
ready to be sent to the QC department.
But before that happens, a crowd
has gathered around this first CR-V
off the line. Associates and
department heads from all three
sections – welding, painting
and assembly – stand side
by side for one final and
complete check of the car
they created. Even the
timekeeper has paused,
lowering her
megaphone in a quiet
m o m e n t o f
appreciation. And
everyone is smiling.
As the CR-V nears completion, one of the last steps
is raising the engine up into the frame.
Honda Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. located at the HICOM
Pegoh Industrial Park in Alor Gajah, Melaka.
Q: How long have you been with Honda?
A: I started in Honda Japan, and have been
with the company for many years now. My
first overseas experience was in the US
and Canada.
Q: What’s the biggest thing you’ve noticed
so far?
A: The number one thing I noticed in North
America was how effective it is to say hello to
all the people I work with, and also to have
conversations with everyone. Conversation is
like the engine oil of relationships.
Q: What makes a Honda employee
different from any other?
A: Well first of all, they’re not called workers
or employees. They’re Honda Associates,
and the Honda uniform is their symbol. Once
they put it on, all social and political
differences disappear. We become one family,
with one passion and one dream. Also,
where other brands may see their cars as
transportation, everyone here sees a Honda
like their own, part of the family.
Q: The car industry is very competitive.
What’s your strategy?
A: The strategy for Honda is, “Dream what you
want to be.” Dream of the ideal situation first,
and then use the appropriate tactics to reach
that goal. For example, the standard strategy is
to view the current situation, and then try to
close a gap to reach a target. But here at
Honda, we turn that around: we look at the
target first, then view the current situation, and
then we close the gap.
Melaka is considered a small factory so I
try to find the best small factory way – like
enhancing the capability through people’s
ideas, rather than just investment in technology.
That can be done through education, improving
both skills and personalities. And when it
comes to implementing factory automation, we
must first teach the technical skills to
seen results so far, with a 25 per cent increase
in manufacturing compared to the initial stages,
going from 20,000 up to 25,000 units per year.
Q: So there’s little automation in the
Melaka factory?
A: Well, there is some. We installed a painting
robot in February 2006. The reason is that we
knew a robot can increase the quality – plus it’s
our newest dream
Meet Kenji Tanaka,
vice president of
Honda Malaysia
Melaka factory.
more efficient and produces far less waste.
We’ve seen a 33 per cent decrease in the use of
paint, which is also better for the environment.
Q: Are environmental issues important
to you?
A: Definitely. One small ambition I have is for
the Melaka factory to be a leader in the environment.
Right now Malaysia is beginning to look
at laws protecting the environment, compared
to other countries that have had strict regulations
in place for many years. Rather than exploit that
for profit, we’ve decided to develop our own
procedures according to world environmental
standards. Some steps we’ve taken include
producing brake material from spare bits of
metal and composting leftover cafeteria food.
We’re also moving toward eliminating the four
big poisons in car manufacturing: chrome, lead,
mercury and chromium.
Q:Does Honda have a stance on the
working environment?
A: Yes, we do. It’s called the Five S Philosophy,
and it originated in Japan: Seiri, which is
arrangement or order; Seiton, which means
doing things in order; Seiso means to clean up;
Seiketsu means cleanliness; and Shitsuke
means self-discipline. It’s very simple but very
important, because previously there was no car
factory here so 90 per cent of our associates
were totally new to the processes. Now I would
say they’re better than anywhere else, making
the Melaka factory world-class.
Q: Do you think it’s possible to achieve 100
per cent quality?
A: Yes, but only if we aim for 120 per cent. We’re
always moving forward and changing our
mentality everyday, every second, because to be
totally successful a factory must evolve every
day. We also employ a free-ideas concept,
where any associate at any level can have their
voice heard and accepted.
Q: Finally, please tell us what you love
about Honda.
A: One day, I saw a 33 year-old Honda Civic
on the street. It was in great condition, and the
owner obviously loved it. That really says a lot
about our quality. And when I see a Honda
that’s had some damage, I feel like I’m looking
at an injured relative. It’s the same feeling I
have for my own family.
Zahidi loves his Hondas – all three of them.
“I was so amazed... I decided to
Zahidi
A reputation of manufacturing cars based
on performance and safety was what
made this 48-year-old teacher from Titi
Gantung Bota, Perak buy a Honda.
And he hasn’t stopped at just one. He
recently bought his third Honda, saying
he’s gone against his family’s practise of
driving Toyotas.
“Buying something other than a
Toyota was an out of this world thing to
do. But one man’s medicine is another
man’s poison,” said Zahidi.
It all began when Zahidi walked into
Sendi Auto in Sitiawan, Perak to enquire
about a fully imported Honda Stream
several years ago.
After finding out more about the
vehicle, he finally decided to buy one. This
was only after mechanics and service
advisors at the dealership assured him
that he wouldn’t have any problems with
the vehicle and that spare parts were
readily available.
“After buying the Stream, I was so
amazed at the comfort the vehicle provided
that I decided to get another Honda for
my wife. I thought the City would be
perfect, so I bought one,” he said. “But
my wife once complained on a drive to
Kuala Lumpur that the steering was
too light. So I joked, saying the car
was only meant for city driving, as the
name suggested.
“Then the service manager of the
dealership, who had become a close
friend over the years, advised me to get
the latest Civic. Of course, it took me only
two seconds to decide. I am confident my
wife will be happy with this car. It’s in the
process of undergoing the final paperwork
for the road tax and insurance,” he said,
adding that he’s looking forward to his
third Honda.
Zahidi, who lives some 35 kilometres
from the service centre, has never once
failed to turn up for servicing when it was
due. He described the mechanics and
floor personnel to be easy to deal with.
“You could never imagine how easy it
is to interact with these guys. They are
just wonderful. And if the service schedule
falls on my working days, I’ll just drive by
the service centre and the service
manager will drop me off at work. When
I’m finished, he comes to get me from my
workplace. How difficult is that?
“I mean, they treat every customer
as important as the next. I like that a lot.
And it has really changed my perception
entirely about their services. I’m not
sure about other service centres but it’s
sure happening here at Honda,” he said.
Sendi Auto has equipped its service
centre with a computer room with WiFi
capabilities, which has made it a lot easier
for customers who need the service.
“This centre has really shown what it
takes to go the extra mile and be hospitable,”
he said. “It’s as if everyone here
was born with a permanent smile on
their face.”
Odyssey of Love
Khairun and family with their Honda Odyssey.
It was either going to be a Camry or a
Honda Odyssey – a tough choice at first
for Khairun, a 54-year-old businessman
from Kamunting, Perak.
Many factors had to be considered.
His wife is wheelchair-bound and he
needed a vehicle that would be easy for
her to get in and out of. He had recently
undergone heart surgery and wanted
something user-friendly.
And the vehicle would have to be easy
to get spare parts for as well. After much
consideration, Khairun decided that it was
going to be the Honda Odyssey.
“Nobody wants to get caught in a
situation where parts aren’t available and
the car has to rot at the workshop for
weeks. I also can’t afford to waste time just
sitting around and waiting. It would be too
strenuous on my wife,” said Khairun.
As soon as he laid eyes on the
Odyssey, he fell in love with it.
“I just totally forgot about ever
considering the Camry. I really loved the
Odyssey. I talked about the car every day.
And when my wife said I looked good in
an Odyssey, there was no turning back,”
he said.
10 I with dreams
The Honda Odyssey is perfect for Khairun.
Khairun & Family
Khairun then decided to do a little
research on the service centres and found
Delima Kinta in Taiping could take care
of his needs. He could get the vehicle
maintained there, and spare parts were
easily available.
“It’s a very spacious multipurpose
vehicle. I don’t have to struggle each and
every time with the wheelchair. All I have
to do is fold it and slide it in. The seats are
made of high-quality leather and are
extremely comfortable, especially when
driving for long hours.
“My grandson finds it so comfortable
that he enjoys drinking his milk in the
vehicle and refuses to do so anywhere
else. I particularly find the meter panel-light
controller handy, as it does not irritate the
eyes during night driving,” he said.
Khairun’s business takes him all over
the country and whenever it’s time to
service, he intends to return to Taiping
and send his Odyssey to Delima Kinta.
“The people, especially the staff here,
are very helpful and courteous. The
service times are short. The grandchildren
enjoy it here, especially playing around,”
he said. “And a normal service usually
Delima Kinta is Khairun’s one-stop shop.
“The people, especially the staff here,
are very helpful and courteous.”
takes just half an hour.”
Delima Kinta service manager Mr.
Charlie Chan said the outlet could handle
up to 25 cars a day with five service
mechanics on hand at any one time.
“We always remind our staff of the
importance of customer service and how
much of a difference it makes with a
smile,” Charlie said.
And whenever Khairun drops by,
Delima Kinta staff rush to carry his wife’s
wheelchair out of the Odyssey for him.
That shows just how important their
customers are.
made this 48-year-old teacher from Titi
Gantung Bota, Perak buy a Honda.
And he hasn’t stopped at just one. He
recently bought his third Honda, saying
he’s gone against his family’s practise of
driving Toyotas.
“Buying something other than a
Toyota was an out of this world thing to
do. But one man’s medicine is another
man’s poison,” said Zahidi.
It all began when Zahidi walked into
Sendi Auto in Sitiawan, Perak to enquire
about a fully imported Honda Stream
several years ago.
After finding out more about the
vehicle, he finally decided to buy one. This
was only after mechanics and service
advisors at the dealership assured him
that he wouldn’t have any problems with
the vehicle and that spare parts were
readily available.
“After buying the Stream, I was so
amazed at the comfort the vehicle provided
that I decided to get another Honda for
my wife. I thought the City would be
perfect, so I bought one,” he said. “But
my wife once complained on a drive to
Kuala Lumpur that the steering was
too light. So I joked, saying the car
was only meant for city driving, as the
name suggested.
“Then the service manager of the
dealership, who had become a close
friend over the years, advised me to get
the latest Civic. Of course, it took me only
two seconds to decide. I am confident my
wife will be happy with this car. It’s in the
process of undergoing the final paperwork
for the road tax and insurance,” he said,
adding that he’s looking forward to his
third Honda.
Zahidi, who lives some 35 kilometres
from the service centre, has never once
failed to turn up for servicing when it was
due. He described the mechanics and
floor personnel to be easy to deal with.
“You could never imagine how easy it
is to interact with these guys. They are
just wonderful. And if the service schedule
falls on my working days, I’ll just drive by
the service centre and the service
manager will drop me off at work. When
I’m finished, he comes to get me from my
workplace. How difficult is that?
“I mean, they treat every customer
as important as the next. I like that a lot.
And it has really changed my perception
entirely about their services. I’m not
sure about other service centres but it’s
sure happening here at Honda,” he said.
Sendi Auto has equipped its service
centre with a computer room with WiFi
capabilities, which has made it a lot easier
for customers who need the service.
“This centre has really shown what it
takes to go the extra mile and be hospitable,”
he said. “It’s as if everyone here
was born with a permanent smile on
their face.”
The increasing focus on crash test safety
has resulted in many innovations in the
field of vehicle design and manufacturing
processes. As far as Honda is concerned,
the Civic represented our global foray into
pushing the safety envelope. And as
crash test results are increasingly
scrutinised by savvy consumers around
the world, safety is a growing concern.
But it’s one thing to merely make a car
safe, and quite another to ensure that car
handles dynamically. Bringing these two
seemingly opposite objectives together is
an area we at Honda have excelled in,
creating automobiles that drive as engagingly
as they are safe – rather than the functional
A-to-B beasts of burden so many
brands seem to be churning out nowadays.
G-Con (G-Force Control Technology)
and ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering)
are two of our proprietary design
techniques geared towards preserving the
safety of the car’s occupants, employing
the intrinsic rigidity of the body-shell and
engineering measures that go towards
absorbing and controlling the g-forces
created in an impact.
With the proliferation of super-sized
SUVs in the market and related road
fatalities involving smaller cars (particularly
in many overseas markets), the safety
of the occupants in any Honda is paramount.
This is where ACE comes in, as
crash tests here at Honda are not merely
conducted with similarly sized cars, but
also with the huge off-roaders that can
be found on many streets.
Our real-time crash test facility is
Reinforced Tailgate
Perimeter (box type)
Additional Rear
Floor Cross-Member
probably one of the most comprehensive
in the world, as all possible crash scenarios
can be simulated with a full 360° view
of the crash available for close analysis and
review by the engineers. Of course, apart
from the structural designs, active and
passive safety measures such as multiple
air-bags and electronic traction and
braking aids help to alleviate the situation.
When extra reinforcement is required,
there are typically two ways that manufacturers
can go about achieving their goal.
The first, and probably the most widely
adopted, is the use of more steel, which
inevitably adds weight to the car and
inadvertently blunts its performance. This
is fine if the objective is merely to provide
cheap and safe transportation. But are
they fun to drive? Probably not.
Honda’s solution is the use of high
tensile steel, which keeps weight down yet
is as rigid and sturdy as heavier options.
And though the associated costs are
generally higher with this process, that’s
the price of producing safe cars that are
genuinely fun to drive.
The current crop of Honda models has
been designed through the G-Con process.
In certain cases where driver involvement
is the main focus, extra measures are
taken to augment the motoring experience.
For example, the S2000 (which was
conceived from the outset as a roadster)
boasts a level of rigidity that is on par
with any sedan. Most convertibles or
topless vehicles suffer from plenty of flex
due to the absence of a fixed roof as a
load bearing structure, but not in the case
Main Frame
Highly efficient
of the S2000. This can be attributed to
the unique High X-Bone Frame Structure,
which cocoons the monocoque tub and
enhances the roadster’s rigidity, thus
allowing the front and rear crumple zones
to operate effectively.
As far as our more practical cars are
concerned, most people would not expect
a terribly engaging drive from MPVs and
SUVs. But the Odyssey, Stream and CR-V
offer something more than the competitors.
For instance, the Odyssey easily provides
the enthusiastic driver with a sporty alternative
to minivan commuting yet still possesses
a high cargo/passenger capacity.
And like any Honda, it looks as great as it
is safe on the roads.
Even the Jazz compact hatchback has
plenty of tricks up its sleeves. Contrary to
popular belief that small cars are unsafe,
the Jazz also taps on our G-Con/ACE
technologies by incorporating certain
structural reinforcements that are capable
of absorbing huge amounts of impact
and then channelling this energy below
the cabin area and into the floor frame,
thus minimising cabin intrusion and
protecting occupants.
Of course, the best thing about our
advanced cabin safety features is that
you’ll hardly know they’re there at all.
The only indication is incredible peace
of mind, as an open road unfolds and
you enjoy the powerful thrill of the
Honda drive.
There’s a roar of engines out at the Sepang circuit, as Honda
and partners gear up for the Super GT. Find out what the future
might hold as we prepare for this exciting event.
The Super GT series, formerly known as
the All-Japan Grand Touring Car (JGTC)
championship, is a grand touring car race
series promoted by the GT-Association
and is authorised and endorsed by
the Japan Automobile Federation and
recognised by the FIA.
Though previously involving only
Japanese domestic teams, this exciting
championship quickly attracted
multinational sponsors, worldwide
coverage and a growing international
fan base, prompting the name change
to Super GT .
The cars are divided into two groups:
GT500 and GT300, with no more than 500
and 300 horsepower respectively. These
14 I with dreams
outputs are capped via the use of intake
restrictors, although some heavier cars
are allowed larger restrictors to maintain
a level field.
In order to ensure maximum excitement,
both GT500 and GT300 groups are
run at the same time with points awarded
separately for each group.
Honda R&D works with partners
DOME Co Ltd and Mugen to prepare the
Honda NSX for the Super GT. In addition to
supplying other teams with finished cars,
that partnership has entered two of its own
in the GT500 category of the Super GT.
There are three teams currently
running the Honda NSX in the Super GT:
the DOME, Mugen and Honda R&D team
of DOME and ARTA; Team Kunimitsu; and
Nakajima Racing.
DOME and ARTA recently carried out
testing at the Sepang International Circuit
(SIC) to analyse some of the changes that
have been made to the cars and prepare
them for the campaign to kick off in March.
Honda R&D Director Hiroshi Shirai,
who was present at the testing session,
explained that data and notes gathered
from this test session would be vital in

Honda R & D Director Hiroshi Shirai. Every function and detail of NSX performance is passionately studied and discussed.
preparing them for races throughout the
championship season.
“Sepang provides us with the
information that we need, which will also
be useful once we return here for the fourth
round of the championship in June. The
heat here is extreme and the drivers have
to put up with temperatures close to 50
degrees Celsius in the cars,” said Shirai. “It
will be a strain on them, so testing
sessions like these will give us a better
insight into what is to come.”
It’s testing sessions like these that
illustrate Honda’s creation of human
capital, he said, and throughout the
process engineers and mechanics are
treated just like one big happy family.
“It is a philosophy of Honda that the
contribution of every single person
involved in the team is crucial to the
success we want to achieve. The drivers
should interact with the engineers and
mechanics, and vice versa. Teamwork is a
major part of our success, and we believe
we have a winning formula here.
“Data gathered from these races also
helps the team and its partners
concentrate on improving the current race
cars to win, and at the same time we can
use the information to improve our future
models,” he said, adding that the DOME,
Mugen and Honda R&D
partnership has been building the NSX,
Civic and Accord race cars for various
motor sport events throughout the world.
For use in the Super GT, the NSX is as
highly modified as the Super GT technical
regulations allow. The most notable
change is the position of the engine, which
is now mounted longitudinally instead of
transversely with the gearbox located in
the centre tunnel under the cockpit.
Additionally, the engine is now fed via a
roof-mounted snorkel similar to the airbox
of an F1 car. The NSX has always been
one of the top three cars in the series,
winning the GT500 class title back in 2000.
Hopes for this year run high, with
DOME Co Ltd R&D Department Senior
Manager Nakamura saying the team
intends to win the championship.
“We have been doing very well for the
last few years, after winning the 2000
championship. We have greatly improved
our cars and are ready to gun for the title
this year. It will not be an easy task,
especially with strict regulations in the
championship, but we have devised a plan
that we will undertake throughout the
season to achieve this goal.
“We will have to ensure the cars continue
to be reliable throughout the race
duration, especially with the
e x t r e m e
temperatures.
motor sports
The drivers and the whole team will have
to prepare for this. We believe the cars can
handle it, especially with a good pit-stop
strategy,” Nakamura said.
The team has reviewed its performance
last year and found deficiencies
that will be improved this year, Nakamura
said, adding they “have taken steps to
correct our mistakes to achieve our goal
of becoming champions.”
DOME driver Daisuke Ito, who first
became interested in Honda racing as a
teenager when Ayrton Senna was on the
team, described their current chances as
being very good.
“It all boils down to teamwork. The
whole mechanism should come together,
and only then can we succeed. The main
obstacle for this race is heat, so we need to
provide cooling for drivers… to ensure they
are constantly in tip-top condition both
mentally and physically,” Daisuke said.
But beyond his love for the race,
Daisuke has other reasons for his involment
with Honda. Reasons deeply
personal and held close to the heart.
“My father drove a Honda Civic and
my whole family consisted of Honda fans,
and I think the Honda philosophy is good
and challenging. It is not just about
machines and winning,” he said. “There’s
much more to it than that. There is a
philosophy and a certain culture at work,
and I’m very proud to be part of the team.”
Other Honda drivers include former
F1 driver Ralf Firman, Ryo
Michigami and Takashi
Kogure.
Some cars are only meant to get you from
point A to B. Others, like the Honda Civic,
are destined to earn a permanent place in
your heart. Considering that the Civic
pioneered the small car market over thirty
years ago – and that it was introduced
when we were known for motorcycles,
not cars – its sustained popularity is really
very impressive.
The current Civic was released in 2006
and is the eighth-generation in a long and
successful series of genre-defining automobiles.
Featuring a curvaceous and athletic
profile, today’s Civic is powered by an
impressive 1.8L engine that acquired an
ULEV-2 (Ultra Low Emission Vehicle) rating
and offers more power with better fuel
economy than the previous generation.
Loaded with all the essentials, from cuttingedge
safety features to a complete range of
creature comforts, it is truly a car built on an
outstanding history and sure to please the
most passionate drivers.
But to fully understand the Civic’s longlasting
appeal, you need to go back to the
very beginning, more than 30 years ago….
Introduced in July 1972, the Civic
marked our first serious entry into the
automotive industry, with an original twodoor
coupe followed by a three-door
16 I with dreams
Known for its reliability, smart looks and long-lasting value, the Civic has
been a solid favourite of many owners around the world. Looking back
on eight generations of success, it’s easy to see why this spirited car is
so very popular. Welcome to the Civic Dream.
hatchback in September of that year. With
both options, the design concept was to
create a new category of car – one that
focused on public life. And the name Civic
was chosen as the perfect expression of
that idea.
That first-generation Civic was innovative
in more ways than one, featuring a unique
trapezoidal design, independent strut
suspension and a transverse 1169cc engine
placement, with the Hondamatic variable
speed automatic transmission added in
1973. The basic but speedy Civic was an
instant success – earning Car of the Year
Japan in 1972, with repeated success and
the same honour in ’73 and ’74.
And as the world began implementing
emissions standards on combustion
engines, 1973 also saw the debut of our
CVCC (Compound Vortex Controlled
Combustion) Engine. In 1974 the sporty
Civic RS with twin-cab engine and the
commercial-use Civic Van were added. The
stage was set for yet another surge in Civic
popularity, and sales in 1975 exceeded
100,000 units. The car that no one had heard
of quickly became the one everybody wanted,
and we took our rightful place as one of
the world’s leading car manufacturers.
Following up such a remarkable first-
generation offering was no easy task, but the
second-generation Super Civic, released in
1979 as a high-quality car representing
1980’s values, managed to turn even more
heads. Boasting improved aerodynamics, a
beefier engine and a larger and more robust
shape, the Super Civic was a full model
change that came with several improvements
to this already impressive car: better
fuel economy, greater interior comfort and
enhanced driving performance.
The groundbreaking CVCC Engine was
now standard in every second-generation
Super Civic (with the 1980 development of
the CVCC-II engine offering a further improvement
in combustion efficiency). Buyers could
choose between two models: the 1335cc,
55hp Super Civic 1300; and the 1488cc,
67hp Super Civic 1500. The base
transmission was a four-speed manual, with
a two-speed automatic also available.
In 1981, the Civic Country station wagon
was introduced for families and larger loads,
followed by a four-door sedan. Both featured
a Hondamatic transmission with overhead
drive, front-wheel drive and notch-back styling.
And to make sure that this really was
a car offering something for everyone, a
five-speed Civic FE (for Fuel Economy) and
sporty Civic S (replacing the 1500 GL

and featuring firmer suspension and rear
stabiliser bar) rounded out the Civic second
wave. Especially well received overseas,
sales reached 300,000 and set a new
export record.
By now it was clear that the world was
more than ready for this new vision of what
an automobile should be, as many other
manufacturers rushed to enter the market.
We knew we’d have to follow our initial
success with something very special.
And we did.
The third-generation Wonder Civic was
introduced in 1983 providing maximum
space for people and minimum space for
mechanisms, with even more effort put into
our already proven and innovative design.
Sharing common underpinnings, a sleek
two-door model (the Ballade CR-X), a bulletshaped
three-door hatchback, a practical
four-door sedan and a versatile five-door
station wagon (the Shuttle) all featured
distinct body panels, creating four unique
profiles in the Civic family.
In 1984 we unveiled the instantly popular
Civic Si, a sporty design with a long roof and
DOHC engine incorporating Formula One
technologies for fiery performance. In that
same year, the Civic placed first in US
Environmental Protection Agency fuel
efficiency tests for the second year in a row.
Various technologies combined to maintain
the now hallmark Civic traits: a smoothrunning
engine, low fuel consumption,
compact frame and spirited lightness. The
Civic Shuttle was available in front-wheel
drive or part time four-wheel drive and
proved particularly popular with motorists
keen on practicality, as did the sporty CR-X
with its adopted resin body. In every way, the
Wonder Civic was a true winner, earning Car
of the Year Japan and a prestigious Torino
design award as sales skyrocketed to
5,000,000 cars purchased worldwide.
The year 1987 ushered in Civic’s fourthgeneration:
the Grand Civic emphasised
exhilarating performance based on human
sensitivities. A lower bonnet line and added
glass up front made this Civic more
aerodynamic than ever before, with a fourwheel
double wishbone suspension ensuring
solid handling at speed. The new line-up
was similar to the previous offerings, minus
the sporty two-door. Aiming for even higher
efficiency, we created our Hyper 16-valve
engine in five versions, from 1300 to 1500cc.
But perhaps the most exciting new
feature was a powerhouse released later
in the range.
The Civic SiR housed the now-famous
DOHC-VTEC engine, featuring our revolutionary
variable valve timing technology.
Pushing the envelope and redefining what
was possible in its category, a cutting-edge
combination of technology and masterful
engineering provided high-performance
and fuel economy in equal measure. It was
and always will be an engine born far ahead
of its time.
And as the Civic’s 20th anniversary
approached, having established a firm place
in the hearts of motorists across the globe,
we began to look for a new direction for
our dream.
The fifth-generation Sports Civic arrived
in 1991, with the two-door coupé reappearing
to replace the wagon. Wedge-shaped,
futuristic and exciting, the Sports Civic
provided flexible interior space and more
powerful VTEC engine variations for yet
another increase in driving performance and
fuel efficiency.
Choices included the 170-horsepower
DOHC VTEC, the highly fuel-efficient VTEC-
E and a high-balance VTEC. Representing a
major advance in environmental friendliness,
this new Civic was created using a high
proportion of recyclable components. It’s not
surprising that it attracted a younger audience
hungry for the thrill of the drive. After all, the
twenty-something Civic was now more
stylish, fun and relevant than ever before.
A “value revolution” was the theme for
the 6th generation Miracle Civic, released in
1995. Anticipating consumer concern over
fluctuating petrol prices and economic
uncertainty, the Miracle Civic was designed
with a heavy emphasis on performance and
quality. It was also the most comprehensive
line-up so far, with a two-door coupé, threedoor
hatchback, four-door sedan, five-door
hatchback and four-door station wagon.
A comprehensive range of new technologies
– like the 3-stage VTEC engine
with highly efficient output and the nextgeneration
Honda Multimatic variable
speed automatic transmission – combined
to satisfy consumer demand for high
performance, safety and low emissions.
The seventh-generation Civic was
developed to be the benchmark for
compact cars. Released in 2000 and the
immediate predecessor to our current
model, it was the first to incorporate G-Con
(G-Force Control) collision safety technology.
Specially developed by us in the world’s first
omni-directional crash facility, this advanced
technology enhances self-protection and
helps reduce damage to other vehicles.
It was also the first to apply digital development
on a global scale.
Offering maximum cabin space, amazing
economy and a silky-smooth ride, it
achieved outstanding safety levels and was
awarded Car of the Year Japan. It was a true
embodiment of our role as a reformer in the
automotive industry, and a product of our
one united vision.
With every successive Civic generation,
we have clearly positioned this much-loved
vehicle squarely in the future, anticipating
people’s needs by providing a car that is
always a perfect vision of our dream. The
Civic has always been a car built for people
who love to drive.
History of Civic
The Civic first arrived on the market as a two-door
coupé. The Compound Vortex Control Combustion
(CVCC) Engine was introduced on 11 October 1972
and became an instant hit, easily meeting new
emissions standards amid soaring sales.
The Super Civic expanded on the original idea of
passion and “a car made for people,” offering better
interior comfort and driving performance.
Taking things even further, the Wonder Civic offered
drivers more than ever with distinct shapes that
went from sporty to functional. New technologies
included an innovative real-time 4WD system and
resin panels in some models.
The Grand Civic was a sophisticated addition to the
line, with top models that included all the comforts
of the road. Debuting in the Civic SiR was the
revolutionary DOHC-VTEC engine, redefining the
technology and destined to become a legend.
Celebrating 20 years of innovation, the Sports Civic
arrived on the scene with a brave new angular look
to usher in the future. The wheelbase was
also widened for a more powerful stance and
better handling.
The Miracle Civic was at the vanguard of what we
called the “value revolution.” Our largest line-up to
date, it was a timely response to the rising price of
petrol that offered consumers even better fuel
economy and longer-lasting quality.
The seventh-generation Civic raised the bar on
safety with several new features that included G-
Con (G-Force Control) collision safety technology. A
hybrid version was introduced in 2003, with a 1.3litre
petrol engine and an auxiliary electric motor.
The Civic you see on the streets today represents
more than 30 years of dedicated research and
development. Featuring a completely redesigned
appearance, the eight-generation is an eye-catching
vehicle that offers the best in performance,
fuel economy and safety.
The Civic Wins Again
The unstoppable Honda Civic 2.0S recently picked up top-spot
at the coveted NST-AmBank Group 2006 Car of the Year
Awards, driving home with Overall Car of the Year 2006 – the
biggest car award in Malaysia.
Coming out in front of 53 contenders in 11 categories, the
Civic was also named Winner of the Family Car Category. This
dual victory comes hot on the heels of two more wins the Civic
earned at the Autocar Asean Car of the Year 2006 Awards:
Overall Car of the Year 2005/2006 and Winner of Midsize
Sedan / Hatchback. That makes the Civic the only car in
Malaysia to win these two exclusive awards in one year.
“The Civic has a great mixture of technology and practicality.
The fact that Honda very quickly adapted it for local assembly
provided the Civic its winning edge, as this gave Malaysians
good value for product,” said Yamin Vong, CBT editor and
judging panel chairman.
Selected and judged on ten criteria that
included interior styling, interior ergonomics,
safety features, performance and value for
money, the Civic has once again shown its
mettle by earning the industry’s respect
and admiration. No wonder it’s so
popular with drivers.
Saving the Sumatran Rhino
The Sumatran Rhino is the most endangered of its species, with
little more than an estimated 300 living in Malaysian and
Indonesian jungles. To raise awareness of this critical situation,
partnership with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Malaysia – is bringing
the message to primary school children.
Starting off the new year with seminars at four primary schools
in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, each session is conducted by
qualified WWF personnel and is designed to instil a sense of love
and care for the environment. And the kids have fun while they
discover how to be responsible custodians of the Earth.
“I learned a lot today about how I can save the environment
and the Sumatran Rhino. I’m happy to know that by not wasting
water and recycling… I can help care for and preserve the environment,”
said Shaun Leow Xie Shern, a 10 year-old student who
attended the seminar. “It is so important! I will go home
and tell my parents what I have learned today.”
Honda Malaysia has pledged to a five-year
commitment to the project, which will
partners that include the Malaysian
Department of Wildlife and National
Parks, Perak State Park Corporation, the
Sabah Wildlife Department and the
Sabah Foundation.
