TAKING THE
FIRST STEP
In 1974, I got the job of my dreams when I was hired as a flight
attendant. I flew with an airline company until they dissolved in
1982. From that experience, I learned that no career or job is
secure. The following year, I was hired on with another airline
company. At the time, I thought that I was very blessed to be
doing what I loved again.
At the age of 44, I married a pilot and decided that life was
great. After 9/11, the world turned upside down. Our airline cut
back flights, but we were “senior” enough not to be affected. To
keep from being furloughed, I thought it was a good time in my
life to retire and let someone who really needed the job have my
slot. Little did I realize the pilots would be forced to take a 25
percent, or more, pay cut. My husband, Dick, was seriously considering
selling our brand-new dream home. We worked hard
to get our house and there was no way I was giving it up. I could
not go back to the airlines, but I was not really qualified to do
anything else without a college education.
I took a position as an assistant at an investment firm. I had little
or no knowledge of computers, and even less knowledge of
investments. I was great at answering the phone and getting
beverages for clients. I loved my bosses and co-workers; however,
it was just not me. I did a great job and learned a lot, but
I felt like I was being smothered in the process.
In January of 2004, my best friend asked me to meet her for a
drink after a meeting she was attending in Fort Worth. I met her
at what turned out to be a Regional meeting for Arbonne. I had
a bad experience before with network marketing and wanted no
part of it. The training that night was on the PhytoProlief Natural
Balancing Cream and NutriMinC ® RE 9® anti-aging skin care line.
Being a baby boomer, they got my attention. Selling, however,
was not in my vocabulary. Six weeks after using the products,
my husband noticed a difference in my skin (and he does not
notice much unless it has wings and smells like aviation fuel).
So I did a reality check. I loved the products. I did not like my
office job. I would try selling. No one was more shocked than I
success strategy:
In order to succeed,
you just have to start.
was when I decided to do this business. Six weeks later, I was a
DM. Three months after that, I was an AM and had replaced my
office job salary. Much to the investment firm’s dismay, I quit my
job to do Arbonne full time. The next month, I was earning what
I had made after 26 years of flying. Life is wonderful! I get to
meet new people, and with NTC and the yearly Arbonne vacation,
I am traveling again.
It finally dawned on me that I have been a salesperson most of my
life. Every day I flew, I sold the airline, and even talked about it on
days off. I was usually the one who talked fearful flyers through a
flight; I now coach others to do as I do. I used to give advice on
the best meal, now I give advice about an opportunity that can
change lives. Just as President Rita Davenport said, “We are a
personal growth company disguised as a skin care company.”
I have learned so much and experienced a lot of growth since
March of 2004. I had supported myself most of my life. When I
married, I became the wife. That is what I was known as. Now
I know I am a confident person who has incredible self-worth. I
am contributing to my marriage by offering financial stability. I
am the owner of a business that has the potential for an incredible
residual income for our retirement years.
I thank Kathy Alexander for offering me this opportunity. We will
always be friends. ERVP Faith Lemler stepped in and gave me
support, advice, challenges, friendship and love. Without her, I
would not be where I am today. NVP Jackie Mammen has taken
no excuses and been a great example. ENVP Martha McIntyre
has given me great advice and been a great cheerleader since
I first met her.
I have a great team whom I love dearly, and whom also happen
to be my friends and family. AM Susan Bunn and DM Allison
Johnson have been neighbors and friends for years. DM Dotty
Bergmann is family and I love her dearly. DMs, Laura Tuttle,
Barbara Biggers, Sheri Hammond, Sherri Streety and Jackie
Monroe are consistent with their business. Irene Bergmann,
Sandy Mayes, Sandy Carney, Lauren Gail and Laurie Davis are
reaching for the stars. My sister, Sherri Landy, has been my
sounding board, advice giver, organizer and the greatest friend
anyone could have. Watch out for this team because they are
“flying” into their next qualification.
There was a saying I taped on my computer monitor that kept
me going when I first started with the business: In order to succeed,
you just have to start. When are you going to start
