Connectivity: Make or Break <strong>in</strong> a Global Market<br />

In the current global environment, this means that f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g banks that cannot physically reach out<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong>uch both the supplier <strong>and</strong> buyer ends of the supply cha<strong>in</strong> are of limited use. This connectivity<br />

is essential because ris<strong>in</strong>g compliance <strong>and</strong> regula<strong>to</strong>ry requirements (such as those relat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> money<br />

launder<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> terrorism) are putt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g pressure on banks <strong>to</strong> conduct rigorous due diligence on<br />

each participant <strong>in</strong> the supply/sales cha<strong>in</strong>s they f<strong>in</strong>ance.<br />

That requires high quality bank connectivity <strong>in</strong> two areas. Firstly, <strong>in</strong> terms of the technology needed<br />

<strong>to</strong> support the day-<strong>to</strong>-day operation of <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly complex supply cha<strong>in</strong>s. Secondly, as regards<br />

connectivity <strong>and</strong> networks <strong>in</strong> disparate global markets <strong>to</strong> deliver the requisite local <strong>in</strong>telligence <strong>to</strong> satisfy<br />

regula<strong>to</strong>ry/compliance requirements. The bank should also be able <strong>to</strong> leverage this local <strong>in</strong>telligence <strong>and</strong><br />

deliver it <strong>in</strong> a manner that makes it easy for its clients <strong>to</strong> stay abreast of regulation that may affect their<br />

own bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> new markets.<br />

Neutral Connectivity<br />

As larger corporations look <strong>to</strong> leverage their supplier base <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> meet their own work<strong>in</strong>g capital<br />

targets, this is rais<strong>in</strong>g the need for neutral connectivity. This situation arises as a result of <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

supply cha<strong>in</strong> fragmentation <strong>and</strong> diversity. As companies look <strong>to</strong> tap a wider range of suppliers <strong>in</strong><br />

the <strong>in</strong>terests of cost, risk <strong>and</strong> efficiency they reach <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> new terri<strong>to</strong>ries where the attitude of smaller<br />

companies <strong>to</strong> technology differs from developed markets. These smaller companies are not <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> the technology often associated with supply cha<strong>in</strong> processes: a small company <strong>in</strong> Vietnam is unlikely<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>vest <strong>in</strong> a full-blown enterprise resource plann<strong>in</strong>g (ERP) system <strong>to</strong> oblige even the largest Western<br />

mult<strong>in</strong>ational cus<strong>to</strong>mer.<br />

As a consequence, large corporations now place heavy emphasis on s<strong>in</strong>gle-stream, neutral technology.<br />

The functionality of bank platforms was a competitive differentia<strong>to</strong>r 10 or 15 years ago; <strong>to</strong>day the<br />

neutrality of the bank technology is the key sell<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t as corporations look for technology that will<br />

facilitate the onboard<strong>in</strong>g of new <strong>and</strong> diverse trad<strong>in</strong>g partners.<br />

Pragmatic Connectivity<br />

While neutral connectivity goes a long way <strong>to</strong>wards facilitat<strong>in</strong>g the extension of new <strong>and</strong> more complex<br />

global supply cha<strong>in</strong>s, there are some practical limitations. In most developed markets, technology is<br />

part of everyday consciousness, so there is a natural<br />

tendency <strong>to</strong> default <strong>to</strong> technology as a means of<br />

improv<strong>in</strong>g efficiency <strong>and</strong> reduc<strong>in</strong>g cost. However, <strong>in</strong><br />

many develop<strong>in</strong>g markets the drivers are very different.<br />

In a country where the majority of an <strong>in</strong>dividual’s<br />

<strong>in</strong>come is spent on food, there is a press<strong>in</strong>g need <strong>to</strong><br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> the fullest possible employment. Labour<br />

rates are also low, so the need <strong>to</strong> reduce costs through<br />

technology <strong>and</strong> au<strong>to</strong>mation is less press<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

For example, <strong>in</strong> Vietnam a small percentage of the letters of credit that HSBC currently issues are<br />

requested electronically, the vast majority of requests come via fax or <strong>in</strong> the post, because that is the<br />

approach the market <strong>and</strong> clients prefer rather than us<strong>in</strong>g the latest technology. In some cases, the local<br />

<strong>in</strong>frastructure makes ma<strong>in</strong>stream technology impractical: for example, parts of certa<strong>in</strong> countries <strong>in</strong> Asia<br />

do not have a complete electricity grid.<br />
