<strong>Case</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Support</strong><br />

“It saved my life.”<br />

-<strong>Kerby</strong> Rotary Shelter resident

To assist older people <strong>to</strong> live as well as<br />

possible <strong>for</strong> as long as possible as<br />

residents <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community.<br />

A happy and healthy older adult population.<br />

<strong>Kerby</strong> Rotary Shelter opened its doors <strong>in</strong> 1999, and was <strong>the</strong> first<br />

purpose built shelter <strong>in</strong> North America <strong>for</strong> abused/homeless older<br />

adults. We offer safe, secure shelter <strong>to</strong> both men and women 55+<br />

who are experienc<strong>in</strong>g abuse, homelessness, or at risk of be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

homeless. The Shelter provides crisis <strong>in</strong>tervention, support,<br />

advocacy, referrals, short-term hous<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>the</strong> necessities of daily<br />

life. Regardless of age, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation,<br />

or social class, all people have <strong>the</strong> right <strong>to</strong> live <strong>in</strong> a home that meets<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir needs and be free from abuse.<br />

Shelters can be high capacity, sometimes hous<strong>in</strong>g<br />

more than 1200 clients per night. It can be a<br />

frighten<strong>in</strong>g, and dangerous situation <strong>for</strong><br />

homeless or abused older adults <strong>to</strong> enter. This<br />

environment can breed hopelessness and<br />

despair.<br />

Older adults have specific needs that cannot be met by high<br />

capacity shelters. Pre-exist<strong>in</strong>g health problems can be<br />

aggravated by <strong>the</strong> large crowds, sleep<strong>in</strong>g conditions, and<br />

meals provided by <strong>the</strong>se shelters.<br />

Older adults are often homeless<br />

because of societal events. Many<br />

face medical issues result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

an <strong>in</strong>ability <strong>to</strong> work and make a<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g, breakdown of family<br />

relationships due <strong>to</strong> death and<br />

divorce, or <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ability <strong>to</strong> af<strong>for</strong>d<br />

rent and food.<br />

When enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Kerby</strong> Rotary Shelter, clients are welcomed <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> an<br />

environment that is non-threaten<strong>in</strong>g, peaceful, and home-like. This is <strong>the</strong> ideal<br />

environment <strong>in</strong> which older adults can come <strong>to</strong> terms with <strong>the</strong>ir past, and<br />

move <strong>to</strong>wards a more prosperous future.<br />

My wife and I cannot speak highly enough of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong>. We<br />

were welcomed by <strong>the</strong> staff members and pleasantly surprised by <strong>the</strong><br />

com<strong>for</strong>table surround<strong>in</strong>gs. We were impressed with <strong>the</strong> security <strong>the</strong>y<br />

have <strong>in</strong> place. The staff are very friendly and go out of <strong>the</strong>ir way <strong>to</strong> see<br />

that our needs are met. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> week days a hot lunch is supplied<br />

and we had access <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> kitchen <strong>to</strong> make our own breakfast and<br />

supper. This is a safe and very private place <strong>to</strong> be <strong>in</strong>. A good place <strong>for</strong><br />

rest and renewal. - Resident<br />

appeal which moved him <strong>to</strong> provide all that was needed <strong>for</strong> 14 residents <strong>to</strong> enjoy <strong>in</strong> a feast.<br />

Everyone pitched <strong>in</strong> and <strong>to</strong>ok part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> preparation. As <strong>the</strong>y ate d<strong>in</strong>ner <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r, shar<strong>in</strong>g<br />
