Oftenone will hear the term,“mild cognitive impairment.”This is the intermediatestage of what isexpected in cognitivedecline related to agingand what is dementia. Itcan involve problems withyour memory, language, thinking and judgment.Often people will themselvesbegin to notice achange in their memory orconcentration, howeverthey are more than capableof doing their everydayactivities and continuing tolive independently.Like the rest of yourbody, your brain changes asyou age. It may mean thatyou are more forgetful as towhere your car keys are, orthe name of a person thatyou meet on the street orthe name of an object thatyou use rarely. Cognitiveabilities can also be affectedby other factors such assmoking, lack of exercise, high blood pressure, stressand diabetes. So what can one doabout their cognitive abilities? There are many programsand websites thathave claims of enhancingyour cognition. Some ofthese are Posit Science’sBrain HQ program,Lumosity and Fit Brains. These programs are usuallycomputer-based and dohave a monthly or yearlyfee for use of them. Theywork on areas of concentration, speed of processing, flexibility, problemsolving, memory, visualspatialabilities and language. They can be fun toplay and some of theresearch shows that theycan be useful for adults andchildren of all ages.Kerby Centre has offereda program for older driversthis past year calledDriveSharp from PositScience. Three of thegames in the InSight programwork on speed ofvisual processing, usefulfield of view (what you seewithout moving your head)and distraction. Some participantsthis past year have noticedimprovements in theirvisual processing in thatthey are more alert to whatis happening around themwhile they are driving andthat they feel more confidentand comfortable driving. This program is availableagain in the fall offeringof courses in this issue. It has also been statedthat playing bridge, doingcrossword puzzles andSudoko can be stimulatingfor the brain. Of course, one of the vital componentsof brain health is tocontinue to be involvedwith your community inwhatever capacity, and tospend time with friendsand family. You do notneed to be a social buttefly. However, social connectionis vital for cognitivehealth. Physical exercise isalso important. The prairie spirit of volunteerismBy Mike RobinsonWallace Stegner, somewherein the middle sectionof his epic prairie novel“Wolf Willow,” describesthe dreadful winter of1906–1907 as “a winter sotough, not even a Finncould make a go of it.”Finns in the era ofStegner’s family homesteadingefforts in theCypress Hills, circa1914–1920, were legendaryworkers. But thescreaming chill winds anddrifting snow created conditionswhere “all thatremained, if anything, wasthe will to cooperate.”And so those prairiehomesteaders bandedtogether in the fictionalcommunity of Whitemud todig out in the spring of1907, and contribute to thecreation of institutions thathave become emblematicof cooperative spirit. Todaywe have socialized medicine, cooperative foodstores, feedlots and financialinstitutions in largemeasure because of theprairie spirit that rose afterthat horrific winter.Looking carefully at theprairie cooperative spirit,we see that it champions thecollective instead of theindividual; it is altruistic inlarge measure, and it is rootedin unstinting public service. One sees its purest formin the performance ofCalgary’s mayor, NaheedNenshi. Tireless, enthusiasticabout Calgary’s ability torecover from the epic flood, intelligent, supremely wellinformed, and at timeshumorous in the face ofhuman frailty (“I can’t believethat I have to tell people not torun a generator indoors . . .”),he played a Stegnerian rolein the flood drama. What I find so refreshingin the mayor’s strongembrace of his role is itsstrong articulation of publicservice in times of great publicdistress. In a Harperianworld where private initiativeis so often held up as thesine qua non of society, it isbrilliant to see public initiativeenabling and creatingthe conditions for the returnto work. For all its vauntedglobal financial acumen andpower, the oil patch played adistinctly second-fiddle roleto municipal road crews, theCanadian Armed Forces, and, let’s face it, public servants. It has been a long timesince those who labour inpublic service have had theirmoment in the sun.Citizen volunteers toowere front and centre in therecovery efforts. Facebookcrackled with spontaneousappeals for and provisionof free labour, invitationsto backyard ‘thank-you’barbecues, and offers ofpick-up trucks to haulflood detritus to landfills. Ithink that mayor Nenshiset the tone for much ofthis infectious compassion, and the citizens followedhis lead with both empathyand altruism.Interestingly, Facebookwas also the forum for ventinganger directed at environmentalistswho hadbegun to connect the dots. Ithink that they usefully actas intellectual volunteers:linking climate science, government consultingreports, traditional wisdom, and informed intuition in thecause of public understandingof rogue weather events. The anger, I think, stemsfrom perceived threats to thestatus quo by “self-proclaimedknow it alls,” iconslike David Suzuki, and well, scientists. The flood and itsaftermath are bad enough.Do we also have to put upwith criticisms of our floodplaindeveloping, consumerdriven, carbon heavy society?Well, yes. Critical thinkingabout natural disasters isa natural human response, and probably as old asmankind. Citizens who volunteerto do this thinkingshould be valued as much asthe guy who volunteers hisFord F-150 to take soddengyproc to the landfill.I think the biggest task weneed to accomplish in thenext few months is maximizingthe social learningfrom the flood experience.Yes, we will recover, andyes we will rebuild, but willwe rethink the buildingexperience? This was amuch more significantevent than the flood of2005, and those that camebefore. Will it nourish thecreation of institutions similarto those that sprangfrom the winter of1906–1907, or will it besimply the impetus toquickly pay for and buildmore of the same? The flood of 2013 couldtruly be a policy watershedmoment for Alberta. It couldset the stage for the creationof new urban infrastructureAugust 2013 – Kerby News – Page 7above the flood plain. Itcould result in citizenforums that provide grassrootsinstruction to ourpoliticians to think ahead, toplan for greater prairie rains, and to anticipate our commonfuture. Page 8 – Kerby News – August 2013Canadaʼs healthcare not keeping upBy Doug FirbyCanadians either love or hatetheir public healthcare system. But what do they really knowabout how it compares on theinternational stage?Comparing the healthcaresystems employed in countriesaround the world feels like amug’s game. It is incrediblycomplex because of the infinitevariables that come into play. How does one properly weighsuch factors as cost per capita, measured outcomes, mortalityrates and satisfaction? Anyresult is open to challenge. But the InternationalHealthcare Report Card, preparedby the Ipsos polling firmon behalf of Reuters News, took a simpler and more manageableapproach. It lookedat 15 countries, includingCanada, and measured theperceptions of the patientsthemselves on whether accessand patient experience hadimproved in the past five years. And the answer forCanada’s health systemdefenders is not good news.More than 12,000 individualsresponded to the surveys incountries from around theWho will pay foryour funeral expenses?✔ Pays immediate CASH at time of need!Up to $15,000.✔ Protects against inflation!✔ Plans increase in value.✔ Accepted by funeral directors everywhere.❑❑❑• Use an insect repellent with DEET.• Wear light-coloured long-sleevedshirts and pants, and a hat.• Consider staying indoors at dawn anddusk when mosquitoes are most active.world, including Argentina,Japan, Belgium, Australia, theUnited Sates, and most ofthe European countries. Itranked ninth, with a score of105 points. The authors characterizedthat as a B-. Whatthat means is that it hasn’timproved at near the degreeof the eight other countriesranked above it. Even theoften-criticized U.S. healthcaresystem was ranked asmore improved, pulling in199 points and earning a B+.There are some importantthings to keep in mind whenconsidering this survey. First,it measured the users’ perceptionsof the system, whichisn’t as objective a measureas statistics, such as mortalityrates, for example. Secondly,it is not a ranking of the“best” system, but rather themost improved. As any highschool underachiever can tellyou, being voted mostimproved does not qualifyyou to be valedictorian. Butthere are troubling issues forCanadian policy makers toconsider. Health care, likemost modern services, isdriven by technologicalinnovation. If you are notconstantly innovating andadopting best practices, something that might havebeen considered first-ratejust two or three years agobecomes tired and old-hattoday. Just ask the beleagueredfolks at BlackBerrywho didn’t think they had tokeep up with the iPhone. As an aging populationputs new pressures on ourhealthcare system, stayingahead of the game willrequire using emergingtechnology to gain new efficiencies. As research byCanada Health Infoway hasshown, the use of electronicmedical records is just onesuch obvious innovationthat will improve service ata sustainable cost. The onus falls back on thegovernments which controlnot only the budgets, but alsothe strategic directions of ourhealthcare systems. It’s timefor them to realize that eightcountries, at least, are gettingbetter at this essential servicefaster than we are.We would be well servedto visit some of those countriesnow, explore what theydid to bring about suchimprovements, and considerwhether some of those ideascan be implemented here. Tome, that’s a much healthierexercise than the never-endingdebate over public versusprivate systems. Let’sput the ideology aside, andfocus on what will make oursystem better for everyone.Doug Firby is Editor-in-Chief and National Affairscolumnist for Troy Media

August 2013 – Kerby News – Page 17Volunteers rescue flood victims from impossible tasksBy Frances DennisI could only watch andwonder. Old and frail, I couldnot even lift the proverbialfeather up the slippery cellarsteps from the flooded basementof my daughter’s home. The flood had not created thesame damage in my owncondo; the main problemwas helping my daughter toclear out 22 years of accumulated“treasures” sitting inthe three feet of water andsewage backup in her house.Up and down the streeteveryone had the sameproblem. The Calgary communityof Erlton, next to theStampede grounds on theElbow River, had beenevacuated on June 20th.In the basement there werecabinets of files, papers andphotographs, sodden boxesof more files, papers, suitcases, cupboards of semi-discardedclothing and dozensof books on makeshift bookcases– shelves separated bybreeze blocks, mostly nowknocked over onto soddencarpets on the floor. Majorappliances - washer and dryer, furnace and hot water boiler –were a complete write-off.Everything had to be lifted toground level, whether for salvageor rubbish. It was almost impossible tosee in the basement because,as in the rest of the house, there was no power, whichhad been cut off as a safetymeasure when the floodwater seeped in. The onlylight was from flashlightsbrought by the volunteers. There was no clean waterand no possibility of hotwater for cleaning purposes. At this stage my only contribution, apart from wringingmy hands in despair, was to write out the mandatorysigns to be put in thefront window. Need pump.Need gas. Need electricity.Rescue came suddenlyfrom unexpected sources.A friend whose day job wasin the realm of high financeoffered to help. He wasjoined by a city lawyer who, forewarned, had boughtnew rubber boots, the laston the shelves of the localstore. He and his daughterarrived by bike and gotstraight to work. Thesethree generous souls hadalready experienced theproblem of basement clearoutwhen they had volunteeredto help others theprevious day. Then quite suddenly, as ifby magic, the house wasfull of young people offeringto help. They came intwos and threes and formeda human chain from thefilthy, muddy basement upthe narrow cellar steps andout into the street wherethey piled up everythingthat was beyond salvation. My daughter, who wasworking away in the basement, was trying hard to protectprecious possessions thatshe thought could be saved. There was Mildred, forinstance, the life-size dressmaker’sdummy broughtfrom England many yearsago. Her grandmother’s furcoat and her own best velvetevening cloak disappeared upthe steps, but she agreed thatthey had been contaminatedbeyond recovery by the dirty, polluted flood water. Thevolunteer brigade was verythorough about checking withthe owner before allocatinganything to the rubbish heap.A young woman appearedwith face masks for us alland insisted we put them on,explaining the hazards theywere to combat. Coffee anddonuts appeared as if fromnowhere just as hunger wassetting in for many workers.Someone called me Grannieand told me, politely, to keepout of the way.It was apparent that some ofthese volunteers had come ontheir own initiative, whileothers, the Samaritan’s Pursefor instance, were making aplanned response to the crisis. Some came with emergencysupplies provided by the RedCross while others were followingguidelines from thelocal community centre.Three hours later, whenthe job was done, the volunteersdisappeared as quicklyas they had come. Off tohelp other families in need. When I ventured out to havea look around, the wholemountain of rubbish haddisappeared, picked up by aCity garbage truck that waspatrolling the area.It still wasn’t possible to livein the house, so my daughterMaison is a refined yet comfortable senior livingresidence opening this year in the heart of Calgary. With the passionate support of Symphony SeniorLiving, Maison is redefining standards of excellencein Canadian senior care. Page 18 – Kerby News – August 2013Revisiting the past:Story and photos by Tim JohnstonPage design and layoutby Winifred Ribeirodown Alberta’s Highway 12 and homeDahl house on Highway 886.Once something grand, Chinook.Country school along Highway 9.Prairie Stonehenge. It’s hard to explain myattraction to locations wherepeople once dwelled. When Ivisit places where the populationis long gone or just hanging on, Ihave an almost visceral reactionthat makes me wonder what lifewas like there in the halcyon days. That’s why I look for opportunitiesfor road trips that take me tosuch destinations. In May, I had some work inRed Deer. That provided reasonenough to head east on Highway12 afterward to explore a partof Central East Alberta that Ihadn’t seen in several years.Leaving Red Deer late in theafternoon, I stopped in everylittle settlement along the way.By nightfall I was in Coronationas a guest of the CoronationMotel (breakfast included!). Thenext day, I drove on to Monitor,New Brigden and Sedalia, thenwest to Highway 36. That tookme down to the Trans-CanadaHighway and a non-stop run toCalgary and home. Photographswere taken in villages and villageremnants as well as at isolatedpioneer schools and houses, some of which are now over100 years old.Flat bed, Monitor. So what did I see along theway? A wonderful front yard inErskine; Alberta Prairie Railwaypassenger coaches in Stettler;and the enormous and abandonedEmporium in Botha. In GadsbyI photographed the curling rink, where no one has curled for25 years, and the brick bankbuilding. Old bank buildings arestill quite common althoughseldom used any more by theiroriginal owners. This one is nowhome to the Gadsby HobbyClub. The village once had anInternational Harvester dealerand the building, with its ornatescreen door, still stands. A fainttrace of the IH logo can still beseen up on the pointy part of thefacade. The school is perhapsthe most modern building in thehamlet although no longer usedfor its original purpose. As if toemphasize, the "S" is missingfrom the school sign.Halkirk was rather nice, particularly with its restoredhotel. I asked about the rate($55 with the bathroom downthe hall) and maybe should havetaken a room. I would have saved$30 but wouldn't have got quiteas far down the road as I wantedto be. Halkirk boasts a tallwater tower with village nameemblazoned, the two-story SnackShop and Consignment Storeand Buck's Place for HandmadeCrafts. Castor and Federal werevisited but didn't merit anyphotographs. The light wasfading and I was getting tired.Or maybe I was entranced by theendless field of wind turbinesnear Fleet, their synchronizedred lights popping across theprairie in the deepening dusk.Coronation was reachedafter dark and I settled in at theCoronation Motel. Photographswere downloaded to the MacBook and email messages sentto family. At 5:30 next morning,I awoke and couldn’t get backto sleep, which was good, as Igot a head start with the incredibledawn light. Coronation’ssignature billboard depicting acrown outlined in colored lightsshowed from my motel windowand became the first photographof a new day.As advertised, breakfast wasincluded. This meant Mrs. Motelfried eggs on an electric skilletwhile Mr. Motel cooked baconand sausages in some sort ofenormous oven, from the topof which issued all the fumesand cooking odors of the foodinside. It was a tasty breakfastbut I smelled of fried bacon allday long.Leaving the motel, Idrove around town looking for"likely suspects" and found themat a feed mill, Jack's Shoe Store, the office of the “CoronationReview,” and the once-upon-atimeAvalon Theatre.Eastbound again, I reachedmy turning point at Monitor. This tiny hamlet proved to bephotographically productive. The boarded-up post officebuilding, still with its sign acrossthe front, seemed embraced inthe arms of encroaching trees.Across the road I visited anabandoned house with a backporch full of intricate detail.Backed into a nearby shed sata 1940's vintage GMC flat decktruck.Leaving Monitor, I travelledsouth toward New Brigden, thesite of one of the last watertowers built to service steamlocomotives of the Grand TrunkPacific Railroad.About 15 kilometers north ofNew Brigden, I noticed strangehigh bluffs west of the highway, perhaps ten kilometers distant.Visiting these would be interestingbut there didn’t seem to be aroad that led to them. But as Icontinued down the highway ablue sign appeared, beckoningme to turn west to see the “MudButtes, a Natural Attraction.”Advertisement on the Botha Emporium building.Following a gravel road finallygot me to the top of the bluffs.Had I gone any further, I couldhave ended up in a wreck at thebottom of the buttes, as an oldChrysler K Car already had! Thearea is both eerie and fascinating. The distance from the topsof the buttes to the bottom ofthe washouts is about 300 feet. The composition of the bluffsincludes strange flaky dirt ontop that, when wet by rain, slips away down the gullies inmud flows and erodes thebluffs. After an hour’s visit, I droveon to New Brigden. This is avery isolated part of the province, which accounts for the continuingexistence of its little school. There is also a post office, cladin shiny tin plates, the aforementionedwater tower, and StJohn's Anglican Church. Thechurch doors were unlockedand the lights turned on whenI flipped the switch. All theaccouterments of an active churchwere present, including thecollection plate, because it is anactive church. A neighborhoodcat attended with me. Apart fromthese buildings, there are perhapstwo or three homes beinglived in and about the samenumber of places folk have justleft behind. The hamlet of Sedaliaboasts two post offices. Theoriginal federally providedcookie-cutter building is abandonedand the "new" post officeis located in a private home.Besides gathering one's mail, some libations are available forsale, movies can be rented andsnack food purchased. A babyshower gift hung from the windowcrank near the post boxes. While not officially "mail" itwould no doubt reach its intendedrecipient.Heading south from Sedalia,a solitary house sat near thehighway. The building is over100 years old and the story ofone of its denizens is told on asmall card attached to the siding.A little girl moved into thehouse in 1909 when she wasthree years old. In 2000, shereturned and read the card.Reaching Cereal, I encounteredone of the causes of thedecline of rural communities. The CNR line that once ran herehas long been abandoned. Now,however, the rails have beentorn up and the ties are beingsalvaged as well. The MarshallWells store is boarded up but thevillage had a couple of interestinghomes made out of formerbusiness properties. From Cereal, I travelledwest to Chinook where I saw awonky old tumbledown build-Snack Shop and Consignment Store, Halkirk.Wind turbines near Fleet.ing that was once a garage ofconsiderable stature. In comparison, the Chinook Hall is practicallypristine. At Youngstown,I turned south to Big Stone, andthen on to Pollockville, Cessford,Wardlow and Patricia.Photographs were taken alongthe way with the last being madeat Millicent where I encountereda barn repaired with license platesand a final abandoned housesituated among beautiful trees. The Emporium, Botha.Over the course of a lateafternoon, an evening and along day, I travelled nearly 700kilometers. What I experienced,I felt, was a sense of whatpioneers of the region may havefelt when they arrived over100 years ago: enormous spaceand distances, and a sense ofpossibilities that might be.This was rather a lonelyroad trip, but one that I highlyrecommend.❑Tim Johnston retired to Calgary after a 30-year career with theAlberta Teachers’ Association in Edmonton. To see more of his stories and photographs, visit his website atwww.timothyallanjohnston.com.August 2013 – Kerby News – Page 19St John’s Anglican Church, New Brigden.Coronation’s Avalon Theatre Marquee.Sedalia Post Office, Movie Rentals and Liquor Sales.

August 2013 – Kerby News – Page 21Book Review“What Happenedto Mickey?”byPeter McSherryin Scotland and moved withhis family to Canada in 1914.By all accounts, little Mickeywas a good boy until aboutage eleven, when he startedcommitting small thefts. Those petty capers escalateduntil Mickey waswell-known to fellow criminalsand police alike.Usually drunk, he was constantlyin and out of jail andhad unapologetically luredhis younger brothers intosimilar lives of crime. Afterthe trial, when Mickey wasfound guilty of JimmyWindsor’s murder and sen-tenced to “hang by the neckuntil dead,” he screamedthat he’d been framed.Just days before his scheduleddeath, Mickey won anew trial. Page 30 – Kerby News – August 2013The Healthy SeniorBy Fred CicettiQ. I’m a senior planningto have surgery in a fewmonths. I was wonderingif I can I donate blood tomyself in advance?A. Yes you can. This iscalled autologous blooddonation. It’s done in theweeks before non-emergencysurgery.The bloodis stored until the operation.Autologous donationis most often employed insurgery on bones, bloodvessels, the urinary tract, and the heart, when thelikelihood of transfusionis high. This form of blooddonation is good for thepatient, but it’s beneficialto society, too.People over the age of 69require half of all wholeblood and red blood cellstransfused. Giving blood toyourself cuts down on thedemand for blood.Typically, each donatedunit of blood, referred to aswhole blood, is separatedinto multiple components, such as red blood cells, plasma, platelets, and antihemophilicfactor, for transfusionto individuals withdifferent needs. With an aging populationand advances in medicaltreatments requiringblood transfusions, thedemand for blood isincreasing. Volunteersdonate almost all the bloodtransfused. Using currentscreening and donation procedures,a growing numberof blood banks have foundblood donation by seniorsto be safe and practical; ifyou’re a senior, you canprobably help the cause. To be eligible to donateblood, a person must be ingood health. In general, donorsmust weigh at least 110pounds. Most blood bankshave no upper age limit.Donors are screened for AIDS,hepatitis, other diseases, andother possible problems.Adult males have about12 pints of blood in theircirculation and adultfemales have about ninepints. The donor’s bodyreplenishes the fluid lostfrom donation in about 24hours. The red blood cellsthat are lost are generallyreplaced in a few weeks.Whole blood can be donatedonce every eight weeks. What is the most commonblood type? The approximate distributionof blood types is as follows.Distribution may bedifferent for specific racialand ethnic groups:O Rh-positive: 38 percentO Rh-negative: 7 percentA Rh-positive: 34 percentA Rh-negative: 6 percentB Rh-positive: 9 percentB Rh-negative: 2 percentAB Rh-positive: 3 percentAB Rh-negative: 1 percentIn an emergency, anyonecan receive type O redblood cells, and type ABindividuals can receive redblood cells of any ABOtype. Therefore, peoplewith type O blood areknown as “universaldonors,” and those withtype AB blood are knownas “universal recipients.”If you would like to readmore columns, you canorder a copy of “How to bea Healthy Geezer” atwww.healthygeezer.com.❑❑❑❑Pam worried ❑ vacations❑meant leaving Mom alone…Mom’s now living at Chartwell andneither one wants the vacation to endChartwell’s Guest Stay program is designed to offer short-termaccommodation and temporary support. tAugust 2013 – Kerby News – Page 35Corbettʼs Orbit —The birds and fish of Mitchell LakeBy Bill CorbettThe lord of our sky at thelake is the Bald Eagle, whiteheadedand orange-legged.His lordship and her ‘ladyship’reside atop a tall, halfdeadtree just a few minuteswest of our place on thenorth shore. From this nesthe regularly patrols, skyhigh, our end of MitchellLake. We don’t see much ofthe ‘missus’; however, weonce spotted a young oneflapping on the ground at thebottom of their tree.Apparently it failed on thefirst trial flight. Then there is the othermarital pair, the Loons, seldomseen apart. They cruisethe length of the lake periodicallyemitting their familiarshriek. The Osprey, of thehawk family, will frequentlyfollow our boat as we troll, hoping to swoosh down on astunned, released trout. TheCanada Geese arrive in lateJuly after their advancescouts. They habitually settleout from the creek at thesouth corner of our end.Often, a duck family: momfollowed by several weeones, cruise by in front ofour place. A rare time or twoI have heard the clucking ofpartridge in a distant tree. Inalternate years, it seems, weare visited at our place by afew Steller’s Jays, handsomein darkish blue with black, crested head. The cuties, of course, arethe humming birds. Thesediminutive dynamos presentthemselves in several403-282-6126color combinations, some ingreen and bright orange. If Ido not mount the feeder onthe deck promptly on ourfirst arrival, one or two willimpatiently buzz the frontwindow of the lodge.During our very firstsojourn at the lake, I wouldgo out on the lake quite earlybefore my two lads were up.At the beginning we werewithout a motor, so I paddledthe canoe and trolled aspinner. Typically I wouldget a strike, drop the paddleand grab the rod, ferventlyhoping the trout was still on.These were Rainbow Trout, with 18 inches apparentlybeing a record length in thisupper lake. I was expectingRainbow Trout here since wehad previously caught aseven-pounder in the lowerQuesnel Lake. These beautiesare the best fighters: theystrike hard (even the smallones) and, if hooked, jumpup to gain slack in the lineand to break off the hook onthe way down. One learnsimmediately to raise the rodtip with the jump and then toreel in quickly to maintainthe line tension. The first time I caught adifferent type of fish, I didn’tknow what it was. We wereadvised later that it was aDolly Varden and still latercorrectly identified as a BullTrout (related to the ArcticChar). These larger fellows, when hooked, plunge andrun repeatedly.
