tAugust 2013 – Kerby News – Page 35Corbettʼs Orbit —The birds and fish of Mitchell LakeBy Bill CorbettThe lord of our sky at thelake is the Bald Eagle, whiteheadedand orange-legged.His lordship and her ‘ladyship’reside atop a tall, halfdeadtree just a few minuteswest of our place on thenorth shore. From this nesthe regularly patrols, skyhigh, our end of MitchellLake. We don’t see much ofthe ‘missus’; however, weonce spotted a young oneflapping on the ground at thebottom of their tree.Apparently it failed on thefirst trial flight. Then there is the othermarital pair, the Loons, seldomseen apart. They cruisethe length of the lake periodicallyemitting their familiarshriek. The Osprey, of thehawk family, will frequentlyfollow our boat as we troll, hoping to swoosh down on astunned, released trout. TheCanada Geese arrive in lateJuly after their advancescouts. They habitually settleout from the creek at thesouth corner of our end.Often, a duck family: momfollowed by several weeones, cruise by in front ofour place. A rare time or twoI have heard the clucking ofpartridge in a distant tree. Inalternate years, it seems, weare visited at our place by afew Steller’s Jays, handsomein darkish blue with black, crested head. The cuties, of course, arethe humming birds. Thesediminutive dynamos presentthemselves in several403-282-6126color combinations, some ingreen and bright orange. If Ido not mount the feeder onthe deck promptly on ourfirst arrival, one or two willimpatiently buzz the frontwindow of the lodge.During our very firstsojourn at the lake, I wouldgo out on the lake quite earlybefore my two lads were up.At the beginning we werewithout a motor, so I paddledthe canoe and trolled aspinner. Typically I wouldget a strike, drop the paddleand grab the rod, ferventlyhoping the trout was still on.These were Rainbow Trout, with 18 inches apparentlybeing a record length in thisupper lake. I was expectingRainbow Trout here since wehad previously caught aseven-pounder in the lowerQuesnel Lake. These beautiesare the best fighters: theystrike hard (even the smallones) and, if hooked, jumpup to gain slack in the lineand to break off the hook onthe way down. One learnsimmediately to raise the rodtip with the jump and then toreel in quickly to maintainthe line tension. The first time I caught adifferent type of fish, I didn’tknow what it was. We wereadvised later that it was aDolly Varden and still latercorrectly identified as a BullTrout (related to the ArcticChar). These larger fellows, when hooked, plunge andrun repeatedly. And since wenormally use an all-purpose,6-pound spinning line, it’simperative to permit the runsEnjoy Comfortable LivingToMarketMall33 StCrowchild childhildTTr Tr31 St32 Ave34 AveNORTH HILL DENTURE CLINICBrentwood Vi lageShopping CentreeSTEVE SAILER DDDISCOVER THENEW OPTIONS TOA CONFIDENT YOU.Full Cosmetic Denture Services For APersonalized Smile, Implant Retained Dentures— The New Standard Of Care.Free Consultations • All Dental Plans Accepted • Same Day ServiceOn Repairs/Relines • Alberta Health Care Program For Seniors261B, 1632 - 14th Ave. N.W.North Hill Shopping CentreCharleswleswwor the line will break. With afly rod there is some advantagewith the rod’s greaterflexibility. Either way youcan’t know that you’re gainingon one until you can reelin fairly steadily. A sixpoundor larger ‘Bully’should be played for a minimum15 minutes to be sufficientlytired-out to be landed. If caught at a creek mouth, a‘Bully’ will invariably try torun the line around a submergedlog or rock to freeitself. Once or twice a summerone of us will have a‘Bully’ bite on a hookedRainbow. Then a tug-of-warhappens for up to ten minutesuntil the ‘Bully’ finally letsgo and one is left with a limp,tooth-marked Rainbow. For the first fifty years ofmy life I was strictly a riverfisherman. However, on thelake rather than being confinedin a boat for hours, onecan stretch legs at a creekmouth and enjoy more airspace for casting, and flycastingfurther with the aid ofthe down-the-ravine breezeand the out-going current. We generally releaseRainbows less than 12 inchesand ‘Bullies’ less than 24inches or three pounds.Virtually we keep no morethan we can eat one day inthree. When fillet-fried orbaked, the Bull Trout tastesomething like salmon.
