BONE-DENSITY TESTS
The introduction of bone-density tests into general practice has
revolutionized the treatment of osteoporosis by enabling doctors to
detect the bone-thinning disease before bones fracture. Dual energy
X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) remains a vital tool in helping patients
determine if they need treatment. Women with an increased risk
for osteoporosis should opt for the test, including women over 65,
postmenopausal Caucasian or Asian women under 65 who do not take
estrogen, African-American women in that same category who have
any risk factor, and premenopausal women with a medical risk factor.
While some pharmacies test for osteoporosis with a simple ultrasound
procedure that measures heel-bone density, it is not accurate enough for
the key sites of the hip and spine.
A healthy diet with sufficient calcium and vitamin D, and regular
exercise can slow the onset of osteoporosis. Smoking, heavy alcohol
consumption along with little weight bearing exercise and low
calcium intake can put you at a greater risk for the disease. For more
information about bone-density testing, call WISE OBSTETRICS &
GYNECOLOGY P.A at 940-626-8008. The office is conveniently
located at 1713 South FM 51, Ste. 201, Decatur. New patients are
welcome.
P.S. Women who are pregnant or think they are pregnant should not
undergo dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA).
