Seniors ColbyBurdine, Stachowiak andArcha will be the main forcesin the trenches for theBulldogs.Alvord should see a moreproductive season this year.Hartfield brings an extrayear of experience to thequarterback position, and ifsome of the wide receiverscan step up and take pressureoff the backs of Redmanand Harrison, the offenseshould move the ball well.Defensively, the linebackersare going to have to helphold the line of scrimmage. If they can do so, Alvord hasa chance to get back to theplayoffs this fall.1st Choice Truck Lube, Inc.1300 W. The Yellowjackets, who finishedhird in district play last year, are picked in theop 10 in nearly every preseason state poll depiteits losing record in 2008.That’s because the South Wise County boysave a roster loaded with talent like the 2004tate championship team. With 10 starters backon offense and seven on defense, Boyd has themost returning experience of any team in the districtand the county.“We definitely have a lot of guys back who haveplayed a lot of football,” said coach J.G. Cartwright.“We have moved some of our startersaround but that’s because we are fortunate tohave depth at all the positions this year. We havea chance to be a pretty good football team.”The strength of the Yellowjackets will likely beoffense where 10 starters return for another shotat a district title. The leader of the pack will bequarterback Tim Fleming (6-1, 205), one of thefew signal callers in the state to run and throwfor more than 1,000 yards in the same season.“Tim is a good one,” Cartwright said. “He alsoruns track, cross country and plays basketballso he is always working hard. He added about15 pounds this summer and is also running faster,so that speaks volumes for how hard he hasworked.”Fleming will operate behind the biggest andmost talented line in the county where four ofthe five starters are back. However, all but onestarter will be in a new position as Cartwrighthas shuffled his big boys around to utilize moretalent.“We might be a little slow to start because theguys are learning a new position, but they justabout all started in one position or another,” hesaid. “There is no doubt that we are big, but thatcan also slow us down a little so we will need toblock well.”Senior Hollis Gregory (6-0, 252) will line up atContinued on page 10

Sophomores Colton Parkerand Blake Haney will also rotate inthose positions to complement thequick group.Senior Ross Madden is one ofthe top defenders on the team andwill start once again at cornerback. He will be joined by senior TaylorHawkins, junior Cole McCurdy andjunior Danny Hardin, a talentedtwo-way player who transferredfrom Sanger over the summer. The Eagles have the rest of thedefense set for the most part as WesColeman will take over at free safetywith some help from Tyler Hodges, while Brandon Jones is set to playthe strong side with assistance fromBrevon Blaylock, who racked up 91tackles and two interceptions whileplaying for Sanger last year.“We feel like the defense will beconsiderably better than last year.We don’t have a lot of depth butmore than we did last year whenyou consider we were losing playersevery game it felt like,” said Story.“We must continue to get better inthe secondary.”Offensively, only time will tell howgood the Eagles will be after losingmost of its starters at the skilled positions. The most noticeable differencewill be at quarterback whereTim Metts will not return as he hastransferred to another school.Taking over under center will notbe an unknown player as Parker(5-10, 185), who played in severalgames last year as a freshman,is scheduled to run the show. Theyoungster is quick on his feet andStory said he is throwing the ballbetter. The single set back will be determinedlater in the season as coacheshave to find a replacement for MatthewHuddleston who ran for morethan 1,000 yards in 2008. One of theleading candidates is Hodges (6-0,185), who played well in a scrimmageagainst Kennedale. Story saidhe plans to use several runningbacks early in the season before decidingif he will have a designatedstarter. Also running the ball willbe senior Chance Gasperson, juniorJose Martinez, junior Alejandro Beltran,Zamora and Moore.Another big role to fill is at receiverwhere standout Chad Harrison(Midwestern State University)has left a void. However, Jones wasa starter last year and could be themain target. Story said he will alsohave Thomas, Madden and juniorBrandon Climer catching passesthroughout the season at the insidespot. The outside receivers have notbeen determined, but coaches knowwho they are considering as starters. That group of speedsters includesHawkins and Gage, while2009 Decatur varsity football scheduleDate Opponent Site TimeAug. 15 Kennedale (scrim.) Wise CountyMessengerThursday, Aug. 27page 34FootballPreview2009New coach, quarterback hope to continue ...Continued from page 19horse.Four senior running backs are listedon the Texans’ roster, which is aplus for Patterson, but none of themhave had any real varsity experience.Casey Jones, Tristan Ceasar,Chris Young and Kerry Harris allhave a chance to win the startingposition, but none have been able tobreak away from the pack thus farin practice. Patterson hopes that thecompetition will make whoever doesemerge as the starter much better.“The competition should makethese guys better,” Patterson said.“Each day they have to come topractice ready to work as hard asthey can to try and win that startingjob.”Whoever wins the starting job willhave a solid group of offensive linemen, led by returning tackle BenCollins (6-3, 245 pounds), blockingfor them. Seniors David Range, JasonInderlied, Colton Roelofs, JohnScholler and a large group of othersbring depth and experience to theline that will drive Patterson’s offense. If the Texans struggle running theball, they can fall back on a group ofwide receivers that may be the mosttalented in the Metroplex. SeniorChris Bain (5-7, 150 pounds) leadsthe way for this group. He is almostimpossible to cover in the slot. Nextto him, standouts Cameron Langer,Eric Clinton and Kevin Meek willprovide any quarterback with multipletargets that can be downfieldthreats. Clinton, a senior, had themost catches for the Texans lastyear (49) for more than 500 yards.Defensively, Patterson is as muchabout stopping the run as he isabout running the ball on offense. Most of the time, he said the Texanswill stack as many as nine playersin the box and force teams to beatthem through the air. For that to besuccessful, Patterson will have torely on a group of experienced andtalented linebackers.Seniors Anthony Chiofalo andEthan Armor will anchor the defenseat linebacker, providing leadershipand experience. Chiofalo wasthe Texans’ leading tackler last yearwith 81 and had three sacks. JuniorChad Wampler has also showedflashes of brilliance during fall practice.Adding depth to the linebackergroup will be senior J.D. Hake, juniorsJeff Stevens and Parker Hatleyand sophomore standout TylerMoore. The defensive line should be justas solid as the linebackers. Nosetackle Ubaldo Arriaga is going tobe the leader in the trenches, alongwith seniors William Tucker, AndrewThrasher, Daniel Lumbantobingand Trent Thompson. JuniorsDylan Dykes, Jared Cook, CaseyCrone, Shane King and ChristianGonzales should also contribute. The Texans’ secondary is anotherspot Patterson feels is a littleshaky.“The secondary is a little youngand more of a question mark,” Pattersonsaid. “We have a safety spotand a corner spot completely up forgrabs right now, and a bunch of guysare working hard competing for it.”Defensive backs Armor and ColeEdwards will be two bright spots forthe Texans in the secondary, however.Edwards was moved over fromreceiver, and Patterson said he hasseen some good things out of the receiver.Armor is listed as an outsidelinebacker on the Texans’ rosterbut could see time in the defensivebackfield. The Texans have a tough non-districtschedule and will have theirhands full with district 5-5A, as willthe rest of the teams. If Pattersoncan find some leaders at both therunning back and safety positions,Northwest should be heading backto the playoffs this fall.THEY’VE GOT SPIRIT,YES THEY DO — The2009-10 NorthwestHigh School varsitycheerleaders areCasey Applegate,Stephanie Aslinger,Kemi Campbell, AshleyDay, Kristi Epperson,Kassidy Free, SadieGolden, MorganRansleben, WhitneyRedman, Bailey Shank,Haley Simmons, KylieThomas, LindseyThomas, ShaynaTomlinson, LaurenWatson, NatalieWatters and MakenzieWitt.

9-2A District PreviewJacksboro TigersLast year’s record:6-5, 4-1 in districtReturning lettermen: 10Offensive starters: 2Defensive starters: 1The Tigers made the most of all oftheir veterans last year en route toupsetting Boyd and advancing to thestate playoffs. However, making the playoffs thisyear will require a lot of improvementfrom a lot of new faces as Jacksborolost 19 of its 22 starters. To makethings even more interesting, theteam has only 50 players to dividebetween varsity and JV teams. The only two starters back onoffense are likely the two best athleteson the team. Senior linemanTyler Batey (6-2, 275) is one of thebest in District 9-2A and will be theleader of a line that will be small andinexperienced. The good news for the Tigers isthat the offense will be guided byone of the area’s top quarterbacksin Kole Weldon (6-3, 220). The senioris the leading returning passerin the district as he threw for 1,277yards and seven touchdowns.Every other position on offenseis up for grabs. Likely to take overat running back for Logan Gunter isjunior Casey Pierce. The rest of the spread offense hasnot been decided as all the receivershave to be replaced with a thintalent pool.Defensively, the only returningstarter is linebacker Rowdy Thomas. The 5-11, 210-pound senior has 4.9speed and will be the featured playeron a young defense.Millsap BulldogsLast year’s record:5-5, 1-4 in districtReturning lettermen: 15Offensive starters: 7Defensive starters: 7The Bulldogs ended five years offrustration in 2008 by posting theirfirst winning season. They have plentyof reasons to expect to be evenbetter this year as seven startersare back on each side of the ball. The biggest difference last yearwas big improvement on offensewhere Trey Matthews starred atquarterback. Although he graduated, the Bulldogs feel like theywon’t miss a beat as Zeb Littlefieldis slated to take over under center. The sophomore has a good arm, andhe can run with the ball. The running back spot is in goodhands as junior Mat Callan (5-10,175) will be back in the saddle afterrunning for 590 yards and seventouchdowns last season. SeniorChris Hicks will move around on offenseas he lines up in the backfieldas well as at the receiver spot wherehe had 405 yards in the air a yearago. The Bulldogs will have to findmore receivers to complement thepassing game if they want to bein the playoff hunt in the final twoweeks of the season. The offensive line has two talentedplayers back in junior Kyle Gooch(6-2, 230) and Daymen Hinrichs (6-1, 225) but must find another tackleand a center to make things easierfor Littlefield and Callan.DHSProudly SupportsProudly SupportsAll l DecaturAthletic ProgramsWe Support Eachand Every One ofOur Wise CountyTeams!940-627-5343800 A Medical Ctr. At 5 foot, 8 inches and 160pounds, the senior is small but thefastest athlete on the team.Hirschi could have the fastest receivingcorps in the district as theyhave a trio that possesses 4.6 speed. The biggest targets are veteran seniorsTevin Edwards (6-3, 185) JaysonScroggins (6-2, 180) along withjunior Damon Ferguson (5-8, 165).In the backfield will be newcomerShane Clement, a 5-8, 175-pound juniorwho has breakaway speed. The biggest concern on offensewill be on the front line where twostarters are gone. Taylor Lee, TerryBradley and Joe Barron are expectedto anchor the group.Defensively, linebacker DevinCriss is the leader of the pack. The 6-1, 210-pound junior led the Huskiesin tackles a year ago and will be thesparkplug of a unit that was shreddedin District 5-3A play in 2008. Thortonwill also split time on defense at cornerbackwhile sophomore defensiveback Anthony Toliver is expected tohelp improve the defense.Just like on offense, Hirschi willhave to improve on the front line ifit expects to compete for one of thethree playoffs spots in district.Iowa Park HawksLast year’s record:1-9, 1-4 in districtReturning lettermen: 16Offensive starters: 8Defensive starters: 8The Hawks steadily improved lastseason and should battle for the thirdplayoff spot this season. After experimentingwith the spread offenseearly last season, coaches scrappedthat idea and went back to a runninggame and it made a difference. One reason Iowa Park could makethe playoffs — or be a spoiler andruin any team’s postseason hopes— is the return of standout runningbackRichard Smoak. The 6-2, 170-pound senior is dangerous when hetakes off with the ball, and there willbe a lot of that again this year afterrushing for 919 yards and nine touchdownslast season. When Smoak does not take theball, it’s likely that junior runningback Eric Stanley will be looking fortouchdowns. The Hawks, who willnot throw the ball much this year, have to find receivers that will keepdefenses honest.Under center for the Hawks will beLee Clubb. The offense will have an experiencedline back which will be ledby senior Justin Thacker (6-1, 270).Juniors Caleb England and Dai Le willalso make room for Smoak to breakthe line of scrimmage.Defense is where the Hawks needto improve the most. They gave upmore than a dozen touchdowns onplays that went for more than 50yards in district play last year. However, with eight starters back, IowaPark has reason to think that theexperience will pay off and lead toat least two more district wins whichcould be enough to get into the playoffs. The strength of the unit is in thesecondary where all the defensivebacks are back in action. StaffordDyer, Kris Tucker and Clubb are theDBs, while the group will also gethelp from veteran linebackers J.D.Cuatt and John Elliott.Iowa Park lost its front line and isusing its two scrimmages to fill thoseGO ! If coaches can find three goodones, then the Hawks will put upmore of a fight in 2009.Vernon LionsLast year’s record:6-6, 3-2 in districtReturning lettermen: 16Offensive starters: 5Defensive starters: 5Vernon was responsible for endingDecatur’s six-year playoff run whenit upset the Eagles last year 47-30.The third playoff spot could comedown to the winner of that game thisyear. The Lion defense did not strikefear into any teams as it allowedmore than 400 yards a game. Theunit lost several key players to graduationand will have plenty of workto do to earn a third straight trip tothe playoffs. The defense’s best athletes areJesus Lora (5-7, 175) and JonathanNeuberger (5-11, 185). The linebackerduo combined for 147 tackles in2008, and Lora is the fastest playeron the team with 4.4 40-yard speed.Vernon’s 4-2-5 defense will alsofeature free safety Elton Watson(5-11, 160) and cornerback LouisTubbs (5-10, 170). Just like most ofthe district, the Lions lost most oftheir linemen, and finding the talentto fill those spots will determine howgood this team is.The offense has a little more workto do as it lost all of its skilled players. However, the line could be thebest in the district with all-districtstandouts Adrian Hernandez (senior)and Tate Methvin (junior) returning. The only returning player with extensiveplaying time in the high-profilepositions is tailback Eric Wilson(5--6, 140). The senior, who will takeover for the speedy Craig Whiteside, chalked up 687 yards and seventouchdowns last year.Everything else is up the air forVernon. With nearly halfhe starters back on eachide of the ball, more size onhe lines and a little moreepth than usual, he hasood reason to think everyhingwill be fine in 2009.“We have had a very goodoffseason and a number ofthe boys put in the extra effortcoming into two-a-daysand for the last three weeksof practice,” said Hart. “Wewill still have a lot of guysplaying on both sides of theball, but it’s good to know wehave more guys to plug inand give others a few morebreaks.”Hart is extremely pleasedwith the progress of his defensewhich has four startersback in the secondary. The group is undersized butis making the routine plays.Senior Justin Carlton(5-11,180) and junior WesWorkman (5-9, 160) willanchor the linebacker positionsat the middle andweak spots, respectively.Senior Ryan Mote (6-0, 175)is likely to take over at thestrong side spot and seniorMarcus McCain (5-10, 165)will fill in at all three spots. The Dragons have a coupleof veterans to lead thecornerbacks crew as seniorsWade Patterson and LeoGarcia are returning starters, and junior Dakota Saldivarwill likely complete thethree-man rotation. JuniorAustin McNair will takeover at strong safety andcoaches believe junior TylerBingham and senior DavidHerrera will compete for thefree safety job.“We are not real big or realfast in the secondary, but weare hitting people on a moreregular basis right now,” saidHart. “All guys are loweringtheir pads and bringing thewood. If we keep doing thosephysical things, they willmake the plays we need.”The only position set instone on the defensive frontis talented senior LincolnMcNabb (6-1, 190). SophomoreGabriel Rohan hasa shot at taking the otherend spot, which is also beingsought by sophomoreNathan Dawson. The coachingstaff does not have anyoneslated to start at tackleas it plans to rotate all thelinemen in those two spotsindefinitely.“When we scrimmagedSanto last week it was somegood ol’ fashion smashmouthfootball,” Hart said. Both teams were runningthe ball and hitting everywhere.I don’t think therewere more than four passesthrown in the entire scrimmage.Lots of hitting and welike to see that.”Offensively, there is competitionat quarterbacksince Klent Selz transferredat the end of the season. That has left the job wideopen between McCain (5-10,165) and Herrera (6-3, 180),and Hart said they will continueto battle for the jobgoing into the non-districtschedule.Whoever wins the job willget to lead Chico back into anew offense as it is switchingfrom the spread offenseto an I-formation.
