4 WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, August 28, 2008y ROBERT MORGANBridgeport has turned outome talented football playrsthoughout this decade.ead coach Danny Hensonas been fortunate to turn outore than a half dozen DiviionI players during that spanhile keeping the program aonstant playoff contender. The Bulls will be playingith almost a full deck, soo speak, as they have morehan just one or two key playrs.Only time will tell if theres a Division I-caliber playern the roster this season butt will be one of the deepest inalent that Henson has fieldedn years.“We have a lot of guys thisear that have played a lot ofames on varsity,” said Henon.“That has made practicsmuch more productive.”Bridgeport is picked in evrypreseason poll to maket out of a brutal District 5-3Alate and make the playoffsnce again. The locals havehe respect of media pollstersecause of the abundance ofalent on offense. The Bulls have nearly evrystarter back that playedne of the skilled positions. Toake things even better forenson, he also has a littleepth at those positions. The headliner of the groups quarterback Cameronreen. The three-year letermanis back under centerfter throwing for 2,790 yardsnd 15 touchdowns last year.Green also ran for another02 yards and three scoreshich made him one of theost dangerous signal callrsin district in 2007. Hisack-up this season will beophomore Cody Henson. The passing game is exectedto rack up a lot of realstate as six of the seven reeivershauled in catches ayear ago. The inside receiverswill be Jordan Daniel andDaniel Olmos, while DustinKrebs and Cody Henson willalso play into the mix.The outside receiving crewwill change on a weekly basisas all four are deep threatsand scored last year. CollinWhite, John Arrington,Brandon Graybill and AustinBlevins will be part of a fourplayerrotation. Krebs is thereturning statistical leader ashe had 32 catches for 544yards, while White was secondwith 17 catches for 327yards.The Bulls hope their stableof receivers is more thanenough to make up for theloss of all-state player JamesKilpatrick. He amassed 1,114yards and nine touchdownson 66 catches in his seniorseason. The running game will alsogive opponents somethingto worry about. Junior runningback Corbin Green isquick and can outrun a lot ofdefenses. Juan Pantoja willalso line up in the backfi eld attimes. The surprise of the offenseis the front line. Bridgeportusually spends quality timeon replacing guys on the lineof scrimmage because ofgraduation. This year, however, all butone player saw extensivetime up front last season andHenson could not be happier. The group is also one of theBRIDGEPORT PREVIEWBridgeport could be district’s best kept secretBRACKEN GRAYBILL SERAFINbiggest that District 5-3A willhave to offer.“Our offensive line is fartherahead than it has beenin several years,” he commented.“Those guys are alwaysthe most important partof the success of our offenseand for them to be this goodand this far along before theseason really starts is a hugeadvantage.”Stewart Price (6-1, 285) isa returning starter who willanchor the line at center. Thestandout guard tandem will beErick Serafi n (6-0, 295) andWill Horner (6-4, 265), whileCorey Henson (6-1, 250) andR.J. Saturnio (6-2, 255) areexpected to be the tackles. The Bulls will have a littledepth on the line as JoshHartsell, Wes Lewis andBlake Lewis will see time inthe back-up role. The defense is two differentstories — very experiencedand very green. The entiredefensive backfi eld is backand quick to the ball while thefront line is completely newand unproven.“I think we will eventually begood on the line, we just needsome games under our beltto get those guys some experience.”said Henson, whowatched his defensive unithave its way with Paradise ina scrimmage last week. “Thewhole defense will need tomake some adjustments simplybecause we are preparingfor a whole new kind of district.Last year, in every districtgame, we faced a teamthat ran some variation ofthe spread offense, but nowwhat are supposed to be thetwo top teams in the district(Vernon and Burkburnett),they are more power teamsthat like to run it down yourthroat.”Most of the early improvementwill be needed on thedefensive line where thereare no starters back. In fact, coaches are still auditioningfor all four starting positions.Daniel Scott and RustyTedder are two possiblecandidates to win the job attackle. However, coaches arealso looking at Zach Paschall,Jose Tovar, Cesar Gonzalesand sophomore Zach Watson. The coaching staff is stillholding tryouts so-to-speakfor the two defensive endjobs. Drew Cunningham, JaredHudson, Joey White andSteven Maroney are battlingfor the starting nods.“We hope after the scrimmagewith Celina to have abetter feel for who our startersare but I wouldn’t be surprisedthat it will take a couplegames to really get thosespots nailed down.”The top defensive playerGail’sPharmacywill headline a talented corpsof linebackers. All-state seniorZach Bracken (6-1, 205)is the area’s best. He rackedup 111 tackles last year.He will be joined by BlakeWaldrep, Mike Garcia andBryan Seymore. The cornerbacks are a pairof seasoned veterans whohelped form one of the topBridgeport defenses in sevenyears in 2007. The senior duoof Trevor Schuett and C. J.Hale have those jobs lockedup going into the seasonopener. The safeties are also nostrangers to varsity footballas Dustin Krebs and KyleParker are back. This will beKrebs’ fourth year at the varsitylevel. The kicking game has notbeen set but Henson said theteam will be in good shape. The front-runner to take careof fi eld goals and point-aftertries is freshman EnrigueMartinez, while Ricky Martinezis likely to get the nod atpunting.“This year won’t be any differentthan the other years —it’s going to be tough to makethe playoffs,” said Henson. WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, August 28, 2008 5DECATUR PREVIEWEagles ready to fly as the underdogBy ROBERT MORGANSix straight district championshipsand boasting one ofthe most prolific offenses inNorth Texas is not enough tosatisfy the critics this year. Inat least two preseason pollsthe Decatur High School footballteam is picked to fi nishfourth out of six teams in therealigned District 5-3A.The forecast would meanno playoffs for the first timesince 2001. DHS head footballcoach Kyle Story is justhappy his team will have lesspressure going into this season.“I guess we’re not a playofffootball team this year,” Storyjoked when asked about histhoughts of the prediction.“Let the other teams havethat pressure. We just wantto stay healthy and get betterevery Friday night. If we dothose things we will be wherewe want to be after the lastdistrict game.”The Eagles have somework to do if they want toprove the pollsters wrong.Despite returning half of their50 lettermen from last year’splayoff team, they only haveseven total starters back froma group that went 6-5.Decatur has built a reputationas an offensive machinein winning more than 70games in the last six years. This season, however, Storysaid it might be his defensethat steals the show. There will be no surprisesthis year on the defensiveside of the Eagles. Dependingon the situation and theoffense, they will run out ofbase 3-4 or 4-3 scheme. The unit has four startersback from a year ago and hasimpressed coaches throughthe fi rst month of practice.Story said his defense hadHARRISON MADDEN MOOREthe potential to be somethingspecial last year before it wasdecimated by injuries.“We battled through injuriesall of last year. I don’tthink anyone ever saw usplay with a full starting group,”he said. “There were a fewweeks when we only had onelinebacker so we were fillingholes with other positions.”This year’s linebacker corpsis solid, quick and experienced. The outside spots willbe fi lled by Reece Madden(team-high 101 tackles lastyear among the returnees)and Justin Tompkins, a onetwopunch that Story is gladto have. Tompkins was oneof many linebackers out lastseason as he recovered froman ACL tear that benched himduring two-a-days.The featured inside linebackersare slated to be JesseKing and Cookie Zamora. Also rotating in at linebackerwill be seniors Andrew Hampton,Ryan Wallace and MontyNewman as well as juniorsClint Taylor, Shay Tuttle andColton White. The defensive backfi eld hasplenty of experience beginningwith senior safeties KoleFuller and Chad Harrison. At6-foot-2, the tandem could bethe best in 5-3A. With Harrisonplaying a big role onoffense, Ross Madden andChris Metts could also seesignifi cant time at safety. The cornerbacks will be seniorsJake Williams and JakeConnally. The duo, which willbe backed up by Chris Metts, made a big impression in theEagles’ scrimmage with Kennedaletwo weeks ago.The defensive front, whichaverages 245 pounds, will beanchored by a pair of stingyyoung tackles. Junior NickMartinez (255) and sophomoreJonathan Alling ( 230)will both line up when in the4-3 scheme. Keldyn Kee(260) will also fi gure into themix throughout the season. The defensive ends will beColby Moore and SterlingHicks. Matt Huddleston andMartinez will also rotate onthe outside.Offensively, the Eagleshave some work to do. Theunit returns just three startersfrom a group that struggled totake advantage of good fieldposition last year. The good news, however, isthat Decatur has some dangerousweapons back in theskilled positions. The mostcritical spot is at quarterbackwere Tim Metts is back to runthe no-huddle offense.“Tim did a good job in earningthe position last year asa sophomore,” Story said.“Overall he has gotten a lotbetter, but he has also maturedand has taken the leadershiprole.”Metts but up big numbersin eight starts last year. Hecompleted 134 of 230 passesfor 2,347 yards and 22 touchdowns. His backups this yearwill be Tompkins and RossMadden.Harrison, who is being recruitedby several colleges, was a big reason for the bignumbers in the passing gameand he will be the go-to guythis year. He had 35 catchesfor 655 yards and seventouchdowns in 2007.Also fi lling in at the insidereceiver spot will be BrandonJones, Ryan Thomas, Connallyand Tompkins.Zack Zamzow, who torcheddefenses last season, wasexpected to give DHS possiblythe top receiver tandem inthe district this year. However,he broke his collar bone for asecond time in the Kennedalescrimmage and is out for upto eight weeks. In his absence, TaylorHawkins will likely fi ll thevoid in the outside slot. ZachGage, Reece Madden, KyleGreen and Fuller will also seesome time catching passesfrom Metts. The skilled position playerswill only be as good as theirfront line. The coaching staffhas been busy replacing anoffensive line that was depletedby graduation.“We are going to be prettyINDEPENDENTLOCALLY OWNEDMEMBER FDIC ANDEQUAL HOUSING LENDERyoung on the line but I thinkwe’re going to be good,” Storysaid. “They have done a goodjob so far, but it’s early andwe still have a lot of improvingto do — just like all teamsat this time of the year.”The tentative starters average245 across the front. DillonDeaton (260) should startat center and will be backedup by Nathan Alling (275).Seniors Brad Bakker (260)and Tommy Combs will likelyanchor the tackle spots whileJase Reeves and Moore willrotate in during the game. The guards are seniors KalenMinor (265) and Cody Byrd(195) but Ryan Cangley andFrancisco Perez will see extensiveplaying time as theyare still vying for starting positions.“We’ve just got to keepimproving on offense. Allcoaches say that, I know, butif we just stay consistent wecould compete for a playoffspot. Too many times lastyear the defense either gaveus great field position and wedidn’t move the ball 50 yards,or the offense was scoringa lot of the points. We needeverybody scoring this yearand I think they will if we stayhealthy.”Wishing GoodLuck to All WiseCountyTeams!800 Highway 287, Suite A • Rhome • 817-638-5111www.woodhavenbank.comEQUAL HOUSINGOPPORTUNITY

6 WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, August 28, 2008DISTRICT 5-3A PREDICTIONSBurkbunett and Vernon are the early favorites to rule the roostBy ROBERT MORGANThe road to the district championshipappears to run through Burkburnettthis year. The Bulldogs, whomade an impressive run through thestate playoffs last year, are the preseasonfavorite of nearly every prognosticator. They are on the top of my list, too.Burkburnett has 14 starters backfrom a team that was very good lastyear. Even though it was the team’sfi rst trip to the playoffs in eight years, the Bulldogs have been a small fishin a big Class 4A pond. Now they arewhere they belong and will continueto win.Bridgeport could possibly have itsbest team since Burkburnett’s playoffdrought started. Led by quarterbackCameron Green, a stable of receivers,a huge front line and linebackerZach Bracken. the Bulls could easilywin eight games this year. However, I have two questions:Can they win early? That alwaysseems to be a problem regardless ofthe strength of the schedule. And, can Bridgeport snap a six-yearlosing streak to Decatur? Even whenthe Bulls have had more talent theyhave found a way not to win.Bridgeport is going to win early. Thisteam is too good to not get off to a faststart. They have to get over the Eaglehump before I think they are ready toturn the tide, but Decatur is thin ondepth again this year. The Eagles always fi nd a win. The largest enrollment to make the playoffs will go to the D-Iplayoffs, while the other two qualifi ers from each district will play in the D-II bracket.were times last season they alternatedquarterbacks and they oftenplayed with just one roster linebacker, but coach Kyle Story’s teams alwaysput the pieces of the puzzle togetherlong enough to keep things in order. If Decatur is to earn it’s seventhconsecutive playoff appearance it willcome as a surprise to some. DaveCampbell’s Football Magazine saysthe Eagles are staying home this seasonafter district play.I’ll believe it when I see it. I’m afan of tradition, hard work and goodcoaching.I have heard a lot of chatter aboutVernon being the team to beat. I justdon’t believe the hype. Sure, the Lionssqueezed one out against Decaturlast year, but the group also lost severalstuds. Those lost to graduationwill be replaced by subvarsity teamsthat were not very good. What the Lions do provide is a veryinteresting playoff race. Three teamswill make the playoffs and there arefour quality programs in District 5-3Athis year. One upset loss among thetop four and someone will be stayinghome. I think that team is Vernon. The Iowa Park Hawks and WichitaFalls Hirschi Huskies are expectedto occupy the bottom of the standings. Both groups have struggled forvictories the last two years in weakerdistricts. The only district win betweenthe two teams will be determined Saturday,Oct. 25, when they square offin Wichita Falls.A Ray ofFlowers“Your Local Shop for All ofYour Homecoming Needs”Serving Wise CountyFLOWERS • GIFTS • BALLOONSLocal Delivery Available940-627-1208411 E. TMWISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, August 28, 2008 23DISTRICT 9-2A OPPONENTSRebuilding Jacksboro and Millsap will have trouble with Wise guysBy Robert MorganDistrict 9-2A will be reunitedafter a brief two-yearhiatus in which it was dividedhundreds of miles apart. Thissix-team football district wassplit by the University InterscholasticLeague two yearsago and sent Chico and Alvordhigh schools up northto face schools such as Hollidayand Henrietta, whileBoyd and Paradise were sentsouthwest of Wise Countyagainst distant foes such asEastland and Cisco. Now the four Wise Countyschools are back in familiarsurroundings with Jacksboroand Millsap. Boyd, which hasplayed in the Division II playoffsthe last two years becauseCisco had the largestenrollment, is once again thebig school in the district. Most preseason polls haveParadise pegged as the teamto beat, while Boyd and Alvordboth believe they have what ittakes to get to the playoffs. However, Jacksboro andMillsap expect to be in thethick of the playoff race aswell with several returningstarters. Here is a look atwhat the Wise County boyscan expect to see from thecompetition.Jacksboro TigersSecond-year head coachBrendon Brown has the experienceto fi nally give theTigers a legitimate shot at theplayoffs. It’s been five yearssince the Jack County teamhas been to the postseasonand this could be the year thedrought ends.Jacksboro brings backseven starters on each sideof the ball from a team thatfi nished 4-6 last season. OnlyChico (15) has more startersback compared to the rest ofthe teams in 9-2A.Most of the talent is on offensewhere the Tigers havemost of the skilled-positionplayers back. The leader ofthe pack is quarterback KoleWeldon (6-3, 200).The junior signal caller isn’tthe fastest player on the teambut has a dangerous arm thatcan burn a lot of defenses. Inpart-time duties last year hecompleted 48 of 101 passesfor 610 yards and fi ve touchdowns. His prime target downfield will also be one of thefeatured tailbacks – LoganGunter. The senior speedsterran for 750 yards and fivetouchdowns and had another137 yards receiving with twoscores. Newcomer Kyle Wellswill primarily run the ball. The Tigers will be inexperiencedat receiver but willhave some talent and sizeon the front lines. Tackle TylerBerry (6-1, 245) and centerDakato Laake (6-0, 240) willlead the way.Defensively, Jacksboro hasmost of the group back from2007 but will still need to improvein order to survive thedistrict race. Safety KaneElenburg (5-11, 275)) is thetop returning statistical leaderafter racking up 55 tacklesand three interceptions as ajunior. The defensive front willfeature Justin Martinez andDusty Welborn.Millsap BulldogsThe Bulldogs have wononly one district game in thelast four years. If experienceis to make a difference, thisyear could be a turning pointin getting back to their winningsdays of the late 1990s.Millsap has 16 returning lettermenback from a team thatwent 2-8 overall a year ago.Head coach Kyle Coker hasplenty to be happy about ondefense where eight startersare back. The top athlete is standoutlinebacker Matt Varnado (5-6,170). The undersized defensivestar played a big role ondefense in 2007 as he had 77tackles.Lineman Robert Martinez(6-1, 230) was second intackles at the line of scrimmagewhere he dropped theball carrier 45 times. BradyFluitt will line up next to Martinezto give the Bulldogs aformidable defensive front.Lupito Ramirez has impressedcoaches through theearly part of the preseasonand is expected to give MHSsome much-needed helpat linebacker. Depth on thesquad will be the downfall forthe Bulldogs.Offensively, Millsap hasfi ve starters back from asquad that struggled to scorethrough the 2007 campaign.Running back Jacob Young(6-3, 175) is the biggest threaton offense as he has big-playability. The senior also startsat linebacker. The offensive line was depletedby graduation and willlikely be the weakness of thegroup through the non-districtschedule.Submit YOURlocal news...Decatur TireOur TeamWill ScoreBIG with You!We Proudly SupportWise County Football1201 N. 24 WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, August 28, 2008BOYD PREVIEWDevelopment of front lines could determine Boyd’s fatey ROBERT MORGANNo football program in Wiseounty has been as successulas Boyd High School. Themall 2A school of a littleore than 300 students hason the county’s only twotate championships in theport and has made the playffsin 10 of the last 11 years. And though there is a littleork to be done this season,he Yellowjackets expect toake a sixth straight playffappearance. Head coach. G. Cartwright said that isgoal that can be met if hislub continues to improve athe line of scrimmage.“Our defense is lookingretty good for this early, ande have most of our skilledosition players back on ofenseand they are doing veryood,” said Cartwright. “Weeed to keep getting bettert all positions but we reallyave work to do on the lines.hat’s an area we have notad to worry about in a fewears.”The development of the ofensiveand defensive linesill likely determine Boyd’sate this season. The proramhas fi elded the best ofensiveline in the county overhe past fi ve years which hasielded winning results. The Yellowjackets, who lostwo Division I linemen fromast season (John Steele anddam Lambert) and a thirdho chose not to play in colege(Colton Sims), have notarting linemen back thisear. That’s an area of conernthrough four weeks ofractices and scrimmages.“It’s gonna take a little timeo get those guys to comeround but we know they willo a good job in the end,”artwright said. “When youave to replace that manyinemen it’s going to takeime. We have been fortunateBOSWELL GUEVARA SESSUMSthe last four or fi ve years toalways have most of the lineback with extensive experience.”The offensive line has notbeen set as coaches are stilllooking at 10 players to plugin up front. Cartwright said hiscoaching staff will likely use alarge rotation for the fi rst halfof the season.George Lavine (6-0, 245)is the front-runner to anchorthe line at center while HollisGregory (5-11, 240) is alsobattling for fi eld time. Theguard positions are up forgrabs as coaches expect torotate fi ve guys into the twospots. Casey Hill (5-7, 230)and Andrew Guevara (6-0,300) are two of the top candidateswhile Cameron Tyner(6-0, 260), Ryan Stokes (5-11, 295) and Rocky Anderson(6-5, 280) are also auditioningfor starting gigs. The rest of the offense istalented, dangerous and hasbig-play ability. Experienceat the skilled positions hasCartwright thinking this groupcould score more than it didduring last year’s run to theClass 2A state semifi nals.It all starts at quarterbackwhere Tim Fleming (6-0, 190)will take over for the graduatedChris Demases. Thejunior signal caller is dangerouswhen he keeps the balland he is a threat to throw thedeep ball.Hilton Maynor (6-0, 185),who is one of just three startersback on offense, will fill inas the backup and could seesome time under center incertain situations. Cartwrightsaid he is lucky to have suchoptions at quarterback.“We are very fortunate atthis level to have two qualityquarterbacks like we do,”Cartwright said. “They areboth great athletes and theywill both be on the fi eld.”Maynor’s full-time job willbe fl anker where he is knownto make big things happen.Dillon Ponder, Austin Ratliffand Cody Rothlis will fill in forthe senior fl anker. The backfi eld will have a familiarface as all-district runningback Jeremy Sessums(5-6, 180) is back. The seniorcan worm his way through anydefense and is also a receivingthreat. Ryan Wilson andNeal Livingston will also seesome time in the backfield.Colton Lyon (6-1, 200) hasthe slot receiver spot lockedup after a banner freshmanseason in 2007. Billy RaySchooling and J. D. Childresswill provide back-up.Boyd has some depth at thereceiver spot where the teamhas become dangerous sinceswitching to a spread offensethree years ago. Juniors KyleStearns (5-11, 155) and EdgarLugo (6-1, 165) both startedlast year and will see a bulkof the playing time this year. The receiving corps will alsofeature Junior Whatley, DalyBoswell, Jordan Smith, AlanCordona and Chris Stone.Lugo, whose older brotherkicked the winning fi eld goalagainst Newton to win the2004 state championship, will be the kicker this season. He replaces all-district kickerCurtis Hamilton who transferredto Azle over the summer.Maynor and Fleming areexpected to take care of thepunting chores.Defensively, the strength isthe backfi eld where four startersare back. The group is ingood hands at safety whereFleming and Schooling willbe hunting down receivers. The Yellowjackets will gowith Wilson and Stearns atcornerback in the early partof the season. They are notshort of players at corner asJake May, Ratliff, Whatley,Rothlis and Cordona mayalso see some time in the defensivebackfi eld.Boyd will have a couple ofbruisers at linebacker whichwill come in handy while thefront line develops. Lyon willanchor the group at the middlespot with some back-uphelp from Childress. Boswelland Livingston will see timeon the strong side while JackieDiets and Maynor will slidein the other spot of the 4-3defense.The defensive line is underreconstruction and will see alot of faces while coaches decideon a starting fi ve beforedistrict rolls around. YancyDunning (6-0, 200) and JeremiahBaker (6-1, 200) arequick and will likely start atdefensive end. Travis Williamsand Kameron Sessums arealso seeing time on the line. There is a host of playersthat could be used throughoutthe year at defensive tackle.Ponder and Lavigne could bethe opening day starters inthe middle. Jeremy Sessums,Guevara, Gregory, Drake andStokes will also see time inthe middle during non-districtplay.Need A New Set Of WheelsTry the classifieds online at www.wcmessenger.com/class?CLASSIFIEDSWISE COUNTYMESSENGER CLASSIFIEDS

WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, August 28, 2008 25PARADISE PREVIEWParadise wants new offensive approach to be a winnerBy ROBERT MORGANParadise head footballcoach Danny Neighbors hastinkered with his offense forthe last few years. As moreand more teams continue toswitch to the spread’em-out,air-it-out scheme, he hascontinued to move his groupin the same direction in smallincrementsThis year, however, thecoaching staff is in the midstof a complete overhaul of theoffense. Neighbors firmly believes, once his players learnthe system, that it will be asuccess.“We are still running a lotof the plays that we used to.Then there are some playsthat are new and others thatare just changed up a little bit,”Neighbors said. “The biggestthing about this Tony FranklinSystem is learning the newterminology. Once we getthrough that everything elseshould fall into place.”The Panthers have thequarterback to help makethe change an instant success.P.J. Fuller, a two-yearstarter, is back and he planson leading his team back tothe playoffs after missing outlast season. The senior threw for morethan 1,400 yards a year agoand has every intention ofsurpassing that output in2008. Injuries created havocto the offense in 2007 but theteam is healthy and makingsteady progress in the newsystem.“P.J. is a very intelligentplayer,” Neighbors said. “Hehas a great feel for the gameand is picking up the offensewell. He is very valuable.”The backfi eld will keep defensesguessing this year asit will line up in dozens of formations. One name that willbe called upon often will beJonathan Lee who will fi t inBRADSHAW CAMPBELL HALEYat as the H-back or slot receiver.Nick Pike will also seesome snaps from the slot receiveras will Caleb Read andKyle Bradshaw, depending onthe play call. Michael Brownand C.J. Kerr will rotate in atthe F-back spot. The Panthers have plentyof experience at receiver asstarters Thad Limke and C.J.Fuller are back. When Paradiseis spreading teams outcoaches will also call uponBryson Mack, Dustin Campbelland Corey Haley to receivepasses from P. J. Fuller.Nothing will progresssmoothly if not for a talentedfront line and Neighbors likeswhat he has up front. Hisgroup is smaller than it hasbeen the last five years buthe thinks it could prove to bea benefi t this time around.Cody Webber and CalebPage are all-district picksfrom last year and will anchorthe offensive line at tackle.Joe Woods and Ryan Smartwill be backups at tackle. The rest of the line has notbeen set but will also includeZach Bradshaw, Kason Gentry,Brad Snodgrass, PhillipSims and Corgan Andrews. The kicking game couldbe the best in the district asParadise returns a pair of alldistrictperformers. Limke willtake care of the place-kickingduties and C.J. Fuller willpunt.“Last year we battledthrough a lot of injuries like itseems we do every year sowe were without a few guysfor most of the season. Withall the skilled players we’vegot right now I’m pretty excitedabout what we can do,”Neighbors said. “As far as theline goes, we are smaller thanwe are used to, but we willmake up for it in speed andwe think that will be a benefitin the middle.”The offense will have tocome around before districtstarts if the Panthers are goingto live up to the preseasonhype. Several coaches andmedia polls have Paradise asthe favorite to win the District9-2A championship. There will be no surpriseson defense this year. ThePanthers will continue tostick with their base split-6formation. Just like the offensiveunit, the defense willbe smaller but considerablyquicker. The defensive front will beled by Webber and Kerr at theend spots. Because they arestarting on both sides of theball Andrews and Woods willalso fi t into the mix.The tackles will be Pageand Sims with Josh Morganrounding out a three-man rotation.Justin Tucker is alsobattling for time on the fieldon the defensive side of theball.Bradshaw and Pike, whowere both all-district selectionslast year, will clogthe middle of the fi eld at insidelinebacker. They will bebacked up by Eric Villanuevaand Snodgrass. The outside linebackertrio is slated to be ScottyLancaster, Tucker and Lee.Paradise has more depth atlinebacker this season andcoaches hope that leads tomore non-district wins than in2007.The Panthers may just havethe best cornerback combo inDistrict 9-2A with the returnof Conner Higgins and Mack. The junior tandem has goodhands and are quick on theirfeet.“I feel like those two guyscan run with anyone in thedistrict,” Neighbors said.“Conner missed most of lastseason with a head injury sowe didn’t have him much buthe looks real good now.”Matt Pearson, Haley andCastleberry will providemuch-needed depth on theoutside. The safeties are no strangersto the game. P.J. Fulleris the starter back deep andRead will fi ll in when needed.Gage Langley and KennyMoran will also see playingtime in the defensive backfield this season.Wishing “Happy Days &Nights” ahead for all ourWise County SportsTeams & Fans!Visit us for all yourwireless needs.C & O Communications2100 Chico HWYBridgeport, TX 76426940.683.8252304 N. WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, August 28, 2008 29DISTRICT 9-2A PREDICTIONSBoyd is the team to beat until proven otherwiseBy ROBERT MORGANAccording to Dave Campbell’s FootballMagazine, Paradise High Schoolhas the football team to beat this yeareven though the 2A squad missed theplayoffs last year.Losing Cisco and Godley in districtplay certainly makes the odds better. However, is that enough for the Panthersto climb from fourth place to districtchampions in one season?Boyd, Alvord, Chico, Jacksboro andMillsap don’t think so.Paradise has the talent to come outon top. The group has speed, lots ofexperience and a good defense tomake it happen. The Panthers also have some thingsgoing against them. They are retoolingtheir offense which was decimatedin a scrimmage against Bridgeportand the roster is not very deep as theprogram has 20 less players than lastyear. Will Paradise make the playoffs?Sure, because anything less will bea disappointment for everyone involved, but a title might be a little outof reach. That’s because Boyd expects to bePreseason predictionsDistrict 9-2ATexas Football ........................................Coaches poll .............................Robert Morgan1. The largest enrollment to make the playoffs will go to the D-Iplayoffs, while the other two qualifi ers from each district will play in the D-II bracket.in the playoffs for a sixth straight year. After missing out on outright districttitles the last two years, head coachJ.G. Cartwright’s bunch is hungry.Boyd has playmakers all over thefi eld. In fact, the offense could be thebest it’s been in three years. However, the line is a huge question mark withno starters back on either side of theball. If history repeats itself then thecoaches will have the line playing beyondits potential by week six. That’swhy the Yellowjackets are the Messenger’spreseason favorite to win9-2A.The third place — and final playoffspot — could be tricky. Alvord willhave the talent to upset any team indistrict and Jacksboro will be better. The winner between those teams willlikely take the remaining playoff spot. The Bulldogs will be light on depthand — just like Boyd — will have toprove they can play well on the line. That is a must to get into the playoffsout of this district.Tailback Shane Watkins is amongthe best skilled players in the districtand will have to have the protection. Ithink he gets it.Chico has looked good through fourweeks of practice. The mighty Dragonseven beat up — seriously — onSanto in a scrimmage. But that was just a scrimmageagainst a very lackluster 1A school.Head coach Pete Hart knows thattougher times are ahead but nothinglike in recent years.Led by talented tailback DannyTolliver (yes, the nephew of Billy JoeTolliver), the offense is in good hands.Young quarterback Klent Selz alsohas a year of experience under hisbelt and is better. The question is howlong can this team stay healthy withthe abundance of two-way starters ona thin roster. The Dragons gave nearly every opponentproblems in the first half andfell apart in the second half when fatiguetook over. Expect a huge upsetfrom this team this year but it will takeseveral to squeak into the playoffs inthis league.Millsap and Jacksboro are both expectedto be better this year. That’s notsaying much since both have been farfrom impressive while limping throughthe last four seasons. The Tigers willbe good enough to knock off one ofthe top teams in this league.2008 CHICO DRAGONVARSITY FOOTBALL SCHEDULEDate........................Opponent .................. 30 WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, August 28, 2008By TRAVIS MEASLEYNot much has changed forthe Alvord High School footballteam since the end of itscampaign last season. Lastyear the Bulldogs emphasizedspeed over size, and utilizedtheir undersized linemen intheir offensive scheme. Thisyear looks to be no different.“We are there again,” saidHead Coach Mike Chaney.“We are not really big, butour linemen and skill kids runpretty well. We will be pullingour linemen all the time, andrely on speed in the backfieldand at quarterback to keep usin games.”Chaney and the Bulldogswill look to bounce back froma disappointing 2007 season,in which the team went 4-6, 3-4 in district play, and missedthe playoffs. The team returns10 lettermen from last year’ssquad, and five starters oneach side of the ball. For success to become a reality, much will depend on theperformance of junior quarterbackTrevor Hartfield andrunning back Shane Watkins, who rushed for more than1,300 yards in 2007. Hartfieldwas involved in a fourwaybattle for the position lastyear, so he brings experienceunder center. Chaney said hehas looked good in practicethus far, and his arm has beenALVORD PREVIEWAlvord expects return home to produce good resultsWe Support Eachand Every One ofOur Wise CountyFootball Teams!ANDREWS HARTFIELD MALONEimpressive.“With his arm, we have beenable to do some things thisoffseason we haven’t beenable to do in the past,” Chaneysaid.Watkins, who is in his seniorseason, is a star to watch inDistrict 9-2A. At 6-feet, 210pounds, Watkins has both thesize and the speed to scorefrom anywhere, and will anchorthe Bulldogs’ backfield.Senior fullback Ross Houstonwill resume his duties of openingthe holes for Watkins asthe lead blocker.Justin Meador and RandallPerez are returning varsityplayers with experience at receiver, and Steven Talamentes, who played on the juniorvarsity line in 2007, has beenmoved to tight end.The front line, on both offenseand defense, returnssome starters, includingColton Archa and BernieMalone, and Jorge Vargasalso has experience on theline. Luke Haak and DylanBarclay, former backup fullbacks, will see time at guard,as well as Dustin Stachowiak, who played lineman on the JVsquad last year.Malone will also probablyanchor the defensive line, andis in position to have a solidyear at defensive end. Watkinsbrings power to the linebackerpostion, and T.J. Houston willbe the sophomore to watchon the defensive front, also atlinebacker.Travis Montgomery andHeath Andrews, who playedbackup roles in the secondaryin 2007, will bring experienceto those positions this year.As for the competition,Chaney said he is excited tobe back in a district with otherteams from the county.“We were in this districtsix years ago, and its goodto be back,” he said. “It cutsdown on our traveling, andall the coaches around hereare great people. The competitionis going to be tough.Boyd and Paradise should bepretty good, like they usuallyare, and since we have playedChico constantly over the pastfew years, the rivalry shouldbe intense.”Auto • Aircraft • Motorcycles • RVs • Boats“Proud Detailers of Air Force One”N. TMBy ROBERT MORGANChico head football coachPete Hart never had morethan 18 players on his varsitylast year. Once injuries andfatigue started to set in duringthe second half of the season, his roster dropped below15 for Friday night football. The coaching staff focusedmore on getting those numbersup this year before worryingabout winning games.Step one has been accomplishedas Hart will have 24players on the field when theseason kicks-offs Friday, Aug.29 at Perrin-Whitt.It makes a world of differencewhen you have enoughkids to put them in the rightplaces that gives them thebest chance to perform,” saidHart, who at times last seasonhad to put receivers andrunning backs on the offensiveline. “Now the Dragons are focusingon step two: revampingthe offense to better suitthe players.Chico is keeping up thetrend and switching to aspread offense. It’s a movethat is taking extra time frompractice but Hart said it’s timeto make the move.“We are a little behind ondefense right now becausewe are spending more timein practice working on theoffense,” he said. “When youhave run a power runninggame out of the I-formationso long and then go right to aform of the spread offense itsa huge change. The routes, the cadences — especiallythe blocking — are all differentso we have to do a lot ofteaching.”The Dragons have the mostreturning starters in District 9-2A. They have 14 back from ateam that lost all 10 games in2007. Hart was to return 17this season but three movedaway during the summer.Six starters are back on offensewhich should lead tomore points and give CHS alegitimate shot at the playoffs.Quarterback Klent Selz (5-10, 160) is back after a solidsophomore season undercenter. Tim Hicks will fill in asneeded. The backfi eld is filled withtalent and proven leaders. The speedy Kyler Hale (6-1,185) will take over for DannyTolliver at running back. Hale, who will play full-time on bothsides of the ball, will also takecare of the punting duties.Tolliver, who battled multipleconcussions last year, will start at slot back wherehe will be a bigger weaponfor the Dragons.“This is the best place wecan use Danny and keep himhealthy. He is fast and cancatch the ball so this will allowus to use him in moreways,” said Hart. “I had a talkwith him about moving fromrunning back and it was hardfor him at fi rst. But to give himthe best possible chance toplay college ball we have tokeep him from running up themiddle where the bulk of thehitting is going on. He can’tafford any head injury.”Chico will be in good handsat split end with Shane Maddux(6-2, 170) and BradleyFarrell (6-2, 190). NaamonBarkley and Leo Garcia willalso rotate into the lineup asa bulk of the team is playingboth ways. The Dragons will get anadded bonus by the timeWISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, August 28, 2008 31CHICO PREVIEWWinning the numbers game is what Chico expectsCARLTON DELGADO TOLLIVERdistrict play starts as JosephCampbell is expected to returnfrom a broken arm duringthe non-district schedule. He was a projected starterbefore the mishap. The F-back, which lines uplike a tight end, will be JustinCarlton (5-10, 195) and JeffScheller (5-11, 200). Both willsee extensive time dependingon their defensive workload. As with several Wise Countyteams, a lot of Chico’s successwill be determined by theimprovement of the offensiveline. Hart said this is one of thedeepest benches he has hadat Chico and that learning thenew blocking fundamentals isthe main challenge.“We are excited about allthe guys we got this year. Youlook at it and 11 of our 24varsity players is linemen,” hesaid. “Having fi ve guys availableto play on the line wasimpossible last year so weare very pleased with whatwe have to work with.”Jacob Creighton (5-10, 200)and Alex Delgado (5-11, 290)will anchor the left side of theline. Delgado is a sophomorethat Hart believes will deliverlike a veteran this year. The right side of the linehas not been determined, and it’s likely there will not bedesignated starters at thosespots as coaches plan to rotatefour players at guard andtackle. Senior Michael Kemplin(6-3, 265), Travis Reese(5-9, 215), Josh Sapp (6-0,270) and Lincoln McNabb (6-2, 200) will see time all seasonon the line.Defensively, the Dragonshave also been a stingygroup that has given even thetop offensive units in districttrouble. Hart expects muchof the same this year by thetime district rolls around. The defensive backfieldisn’t deep but has a few gems.Tolliver and Selz will take overat safety. Garcia will also takeover at times as the duo alsostarts on offense. The cornerbacks will beMaddux, Hicks, Barkley andCampbell.Hart is happy about thecrew of linebackers he hasback because they can all hitand fl y to the ball. Scheller isthe bruiser back at the middlespot while Hale and MarcusMcCain will line-up on eachside of him.The defense will start withthe big boys up front. That’s where returning seniorstandouts Wacey Jackson(6-0, 205) and JamesPollard (5-9, 170) will battleas defensive ends.Creighton and Kemplinhave won the early battle astackles.Hart hopes to win the latebattles once District 9-2A playgets under way in October.“I love this new district. Wewent from eight teams to sixwhich gives us fi ve non-districtgames to get ready insteadof three,” he said. “Mostteams set goals on winningthe district championship atthe start of the season, butwe are going to set our goalon winning the next game. Ifwe keep our kids focused onone game and not all of them,I’ll feel better about their effortand performance eachweek.”Good Luckto All Wise CountyFootball Teams2K Pawn & Gun ShopServing Wise County for over 20 Yearssrr940-627-7800 • 1605 Bus. 380 W. • DecaturOpen Mon. - Fri., 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. • Sat., 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, August 28, 2008 35NORTHWEST RIVALSFriends or foesAdjusting to Class 5A includes shopping for rivalsBy TRAVIS MEASLEYFor Wise County, highschool football is a living, breathing entity, especiallywhen the county teams gohead to head in the classicrivalry battles. Decatur versusBridgeport; Chico againstAlvord; Boyd and Paradise— these are more than justfootball games — they arecity bragging rights for an entireyear, and nobody wantsto lose. For Northwest High School, the only 5A high school inthe county, a heated rivalryis something the team is stillsearching for.“Probably our biggest rivalright now is Colleyville Heritage,or at least that’s who Isee as our biggest rival,” saidNorthwest senior linebackerand defensive leader JacobKnickerbocker. “We haven’tbeaten them since I startedplaying on the varsity twoyears ago and I really want tobeat them my senior year.”The previous two timesNorthwest and Colleyvillehave faced each other, Northwesthas held a lead late inthe game only to see it lost inthe fi nal minutes.“I think that’s extra motivationfor us this year,” Knickerbockersaid. “We weren’t supposedto be able to hang withthem at all, and the fact thatwe did shows us that we areclose and can win.”For Northwest, preparationfor a rivalry game againsta team they have a little extrafootball hatred for helpssharpen their minds on thepractice field.“That’s the week [before theColleyville Heritage game]that I really watch the smallthings,” said Northwest seniorLars Huizenga. “I don’t takeany reps off during practice.I focus hard while watchingfi lm, watching their footworkand studying their moves withextra focus. When you wantto beat a team that badly, youdo those things to step upyour game.”Also, with the schools inrelatively close proximity toeach other, rivalries are oftencultivated off the fi eld, as thestudents interact with eachother after school hours.“We see these people allthe time at hangouts, so weknow them,” Knickerbockersaid. “That’s an extra littlepush to want to just stompthem on the football field. I’llnotice small things about theplayers that may bug me orannoy me, and use that asfuel to the fi re.”“Southlake Town Square iskind of a middle ground betweenall the schools, andthat’s where most of the kidshang out, so just seeing anyof those guys outside of thepractice fi eld creates thattense environment that transfersover to the game.”Regardless of who surfacesas Northwest’s main rivalin District 5-5A, arguably thetoughest 5A district in thestate, Northwest will havetheir hands full with teamssuch as 2007 Div. I StateChampion Euless Trinity, Colleyville,Grapevine and KellerFossil Ridge as the teamscollide week in and week outfor a coveted spot in the playoffs.NORTHWEST PREVIEWNorthwest hopes surprises are enough to keep pace in 5ABy TRAVIS MEASLEYIn 2007, Northwest High Schoolplayed in quite possibly the toughest5A district in the state. In 2008, withthe addition of Euless Trinity, KellerFossil Ridge and Hurst Bell, District5-5A only got tougher. For NorthwestHead Coach Leonard McAngus, thejob of getting his Texans, who returnnine starters, only two on offense, tothe playoffs is as hard as ever.“This district has been tough beforeand now its even tougher,” McAngussaid. “The teams that moved in areall playoff teams. We are just goingto have to play the cards we are dealtand focus on executing our game planand getting Northwest better.”Senior Bryson Curb leads the Texans’spread attack as the starting quarterback.Last year as the main starter,Curb threw for almost 2,000 yards and12 touchdowns, and has been solid inpreseason practice thus far.“Curb has looked very good so farat quarterback,” McAngus said. “Heis one of the two starters we have returningon offense, and he will be thekey player in keeping our offense onthe field.”The Texans will be extremely inexperiencedat receiver, with no returningvarsity lettermen, but McAngusbelieves that the juniors and seniorsthat spent last season on the juniorvarsity team will surprise people.“With seniors graduating, we areexpecting juniors that played on JV tostep in right away as seniors on thevarsity team, and so far they have donejust that. Our two inside receivers, juniorsChris Bain and Cole Edwards, are playing very well right now.”Bain is the Texans’ most legitimatethreat at wide receiver, and he is atough, physical player who makesup for his lack of size with speed andtenacity. Eric Clinton and CameronLanger will add depth at the outsidereceiver position as well as TaylorBarnhill and Kevin Meek. Barnhill andClinton, who are also quarterbacks, have good size at 6-feet-3-inches.The offensive line should be solid, with returning varsity linemen BenCollins, Bruce David and Aaron Leal.Seniors Patrick Lee, Rocky Hernandez,Reed Ryan and Stephen Borcikshould add depth and experience tothe front four.On defense, the Texans return sevenstarters and look to have a verytough, solid unit this year. The Texanswill play a 3-3 stack, mixing in a 4-2-5,which could highlight the speed theyhave in the secondary.“Our main focus on defense is toswarm the ball and be as fast as wecan be on every play,” McAngus said.“If our guys run a 4.8 (40-yard-dash),then we are going to run that 4.8 onevery single down.”Seniors Jacob Knickerbocker andLars Huizenga, both in their third yearstarting on varsity, will anchor the defense.Knickerbocker is a possible alldistrictpick at linebacker, as is Huizenga, who had 119 tackles last year,at free safety. Senior cornerbacksThomas Swift and Tanner Young, whoalso have varsity experience, will addeven more depth to the secondary.Seniors Fernando Arroyo and RodneyNobles look to anchor the defensiveline in the 4-2-5. Matt Sanderson,Bo Nix, Roberto Salazar and JasonBramow will also challenge for playingtime.Linebackers Lee Taylor and DylanPounds will create toughness in themiddle, along with Knickerbocker.

36 WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, August 28, 2008Euless TrinityLast year’s record: 15-1, 7-0 indistrictLettermen: 21Offensive starters: 5Defensive starters: 6After going 15-1 (7-0 in districtplay) last season and rollingthrough the playoffs on their wayto winning the 5A Division I StateChampionship, the Trinity Trojans, ranked No. 1 in the country in theNational Prep poll, moved intoDistrict 5-5A, replacing SouthlakeCarroll as the district’s front-runner.This season, even with the lossof the top running back in theMetroplex, Samir Baker and tightend Josh Ayers, the Trojans arestill the No. 1 pick to repeat as Div.1 State Champions.Senior quarterback DenariusMcGhee will lead the Trojans offense. After throwing more than1,700 yards, 14 touchdowns andonly 4 interceptions last year, look for McGhee to have anothersolid year guiding the offense.Trinity Head Coach Steve Lineweaverlikes to pound the ball onthe ground, so McGhee won’t beasked to put up startling numbers, but to just manage the team.Dontrayevous Robinson, whowill head to the University of Nebraskanext fall, will be the workhorsefor the offense, running betweenthe monster line, anchoredby guys like Cameron Graves andChuck Davenport. Robinson averaged6.45 yards a carry last yearon only 137 touches in backupwork behind Baker, but look forhim to get more than 300 touchesthis year. Robinson is also effectiveout of the backfield, catching16 passes last year and a touchdown. The receiving corps is as effectiveas quarterback, its returningits top two receivers, Tyree Tuckerand Stetson Smith. Each one ofthem hauled in four touchdownslast year, and accounted for overhalf of McGhee’s passing yards. They will be extremely capable ofoperating inside Lineweaver’s offense. The defense is the heart of theteam, holding teams to just over200 total yards per game last year.Returning six starters, they havea chance of being even better.Senior linebacker Earnest Norman, who is headed to Kansasnext fall, will be one of the leadersreturning from the championshipteam. Norman (6-0, 215 lbs.) is aforce to be reckoned with in themiddle, and had three interceptionslast year. Defensive backsEryon Barnett and Prinz Kandeanchor the secondary that will bevery fast and very physical. Barnettwill head to Texas after thisyear, and Kande has the skills toplay at a BCS school as well. The defensive line is packedwith speed and size, as usual.Look for Siosaia Tiupilotu (6-2,280 lbs.) to lead the line, and lookfor them to play physical footballdown in the trenches.Colleyville HeritageLast year’s record: 8-3, 6-1 indistrict playLettermen: 28Offensive starters: 5Defensive starters: 6If any team in the district is goingto challenge Trinity, it will probablybe the Heritage Panthers. Aftertaking second in their districtlast year, behind Southlake Carroll, who is now in District 6, thePanthers fell to Lewisville in anovertime stunner in the first roundof the playoffs, 24-21.Senior Steve Hill returns toquarterback Coach Mike Fuller’sspread offense. Hill threw for1,516 yards and 11 touchdownslast season, but split time withthen-senior Tyler Little. Look forHill to become more comfortableand efficient in the shotgunformation. He is also a threat torun, carrying the ball 100 timeslast year. The wide receivers will be solidas well. With last years leadingreceivers Joel Quintanilla andShane Hilliard gone, look for receiversJake Skinner and StanSmith to play the leading roles atwide-out in the spread offense. For the Panthers to have anyreal chance against Trinity, theywill have to improve their numberson the ground. Last season Heritagerushed for under 800 yards, which will not be enough againstEuless, who is very good againstthe pass. The good news is thatthe Panthers’ leading rushers,Bryan Head and Bailey Crego, both return to anchor the backfield, and the two will probablyshare the load again this season. These two, who combined for justover 500 yards last season onthe ground, will need to doublethat to be competitive. Their experiencewill be a valuable asset, and both are capable of catchingpasses out of the backfield orsplit out wide as a fourth or fifthreceiver. Most of the offensiveDISTRICT 5-5A OPPONENTSline will have to be replaced, andsolid prospects David Muller andCameron Martin will have to stepup and help open holes for Headand Crego to run through. The defense returns a groupthat could make a run at beingone of the top units in the Metroplex.Linebacker Bobby Schneider(6-0, 205) is tough and very fast.He has the ability to make playsat any point on the field. Defensiveback Eddie Foster (6-0, 165)runs a 4.3 40-yard-dash and is ahuge playmaker on defense. Defensivelinemen Matt Hornbuckleand Robert Heine will be the leadersin the front four.Keller Fossil RidgeLast year’s record (Class 4A):10-2, 7-0 in district playLettermen: 32Offensive starters:Defensive starters: 7After moving up from Class 4Athis off season, the Fossil RidgePanthers look to make an immediateimpact and contend for aplayoff spot in 2008. Last year thePanthers were perfect in their districtbefore falling in the regionalfinals to Aledo, 21-7. This year, playing in class 5A, the Panthersshouldn’t struggle much. Theywill be extremely quick on bothsides of the ball, and boast one ofthe best returning receivers fromClass 4A in Aaron Fisher. The success of Fossil Ridge willprobably depend on the performanceof senior quarterback TylerLeikness. Leikness spent mostof last season performing mop-upduty behind star John Killion, whothrew for almost 3,000 yards and34 touchdowns in 2007. Leiknesswill need to keep his head abouthim and play smart against the5A defenses, but he has impactplayers all around him to ease thepressure.Leikness will be throwing to aslew of star receivers this season.All-District senior Aaron Fisher(6-3, 195) will lead the squad.Fisher had 61 catches for 1,031yards and 15 touchdowns lastyear, and if Leikness can stay upright, should be able to improvethose numbers. Jordan Shea andTerrell Williams, solid role playerslast year, will have the chanceto step up and catch 40 or morepasses. With the departure of runningback Jeffry Rodriquez, runningback Ervay Mbambi will carrymost of the load for the Panthers.Mbambi showed promisein 2007, averaging more than 5yards a carry on 51 touches, andwill probably see at least doublethat this year. The defense will be extremelyquick this year, lead by standoutlinebacker Branden Mahoney.Mahoney (6-3, 210) is a beast atlinebacker, recording 167 tackles,5 sacks and 5 interceptions lastyear. All-district selection JasonHeflin and Ngia Nguyen will addtalent and depth at linebacker tocomplement Mahoney. Defensivetackle Jonathan Rodgers leadsthe defensive line, joined by AlexVasquez, LaVaughn Andrewsand Will Thomas.GrapevineLast year’s record: 6-5, 5-2 indistrict playLettermen: 22Offensive starters: 4Defensive starters: 5The Grapevine Mustangs werehit extremely hard by graduationlast year, and have holes at everyskill position. Most of their returningoffensive starters are on theline, and Head Coach Gary Mullinsis going to have to rely onyouth and inexperience to leadhis team.Replacing Matt Harbin, whothrew for just under 2,500 yardslast year, is going to be tough.Quarterback/running back JohnMundy may be the front runnerfor the job, but he is also theMustangs’ best returning runningback. Christian Ballard and ChristianSchroeder might challengeMundy, but neither has any varsityexperience under center.Running back is even more of aquestion mark for the Mustangs.Again, Mundy is the most experiencedreturning player, but willprobably end up at quarterback. That leaves seniors Alex Klingbieland Forrest Barouch as the onlyplayers listed at running back onthe Mustangs’ roster, and Klingbielis a standout linebacker aswell. They will probably be left tobattle it out for the position.Grapevine has a number ofwide receivers listed on their roster, but again, not one of themcaught a pass for the varsitysquad last year. Senior TimothyPeterson has experience at cornerback, and may be able to filla role as a receiver, and thereare a number of other defensivebacks that could possibly doubleas wide receivers, but most arequestion marks at this time.On the offensive and defensivelines, the Mustangs have rarebright spots. Three varsity playersreturn on the 0-line: Evyn Perry,Austin Harrison and MichaelMcLaughlin. There should beenough depth and talent there toprotect whomever is running theball or throwing it. The defensiveline is led by junior Chris Harold.Harold saw a good amount ofaction in 2007, and should be asolid anchor for the line. Other returnerson the D-line include tacklesChase Actkinson and BlayeRay, and end Matt Potysman.End Ryan Guthrie could also seeconsiderable playing time.All-district linebacker Klingbielleads the defense, along withreturning players Jeff Taylor atlinebacker, and defensive backsPeterson and Trevor Noel. LinebackerElisha Davis could also bein the mix.Hurst L.D. BellLast year’s record: 6-5, 4-3 indistrict playLettermen: 14Offensive starters: 2Defensive starters: 3The Hurst Bell Blue Raidersare another newcommer to thedistrict. After a solid season lastyear, which included losing toArlington Bowie in the first roundof the playoffs, the Blue Raiderslook to improve their record in thetough District 5-5A. After losing43 lettermen to graduation, coachGary Olivo will have his work cutout for him.Senior Logan Smith will takethe reigns at quarterback aftersplitting time with Tate Holbertlast year. Smith was a solid backupbehind Holbert, throwing for756 yards and 5 touchdowns inlimited action. At 6-feet-2-inches,Smith has the build to be a solidquarterback.Smith will be throwing to seniorKarrence Edwards, who caught20 passes last year and wasalso a solid rusher. Athletic juniorIsiah Holowaym (6-1, 185 lbs)is a quick player who could playmultiple postitions on offense ordefense. The running back position willbe tough to fill after Deante Pipergraduated. Piper ran for 1,385yards and 14 touchdowns in2007. Edwards saw some actioncarrying the ball last year, andcould serve as a receiver/runningback hybrid, and sophomoreKenny Farrow (5-11, 185 lbs.) isContinued on page 39

The largest enrollment to make the playoffs will go to the D-Iplayoffs, while the other two qualifi ers from each district will play in the D-II bracket.many weapons that won’t be back.Northwest head coach LeonardMcAngus will need several junior varsityplayers and varsity back-ups tomake a big impact.Quarterback Bryson Curb is backand Taylor Barnhill, who competed forthe QB job as a sophomore last yearbefore missing the year with an injury, will make a big impact at receiver.Though Northwest has the largestenrollment of all eight schools inDistrict 5-5A, it may be the smallestwhen it comes to depth. That is costlyat this level and could make for a longseason.Trinity, the top-ranked team in thecountry, is loaded and arguably theteam to beat in every preseason poll. The Trojans’ defense allowed lessthan 210 yards a game last year andwill be just as good this year.Colleyville Heritage and FossilRidge both have talented quarterbacksagain this season and will fi ghtit out for second and third place asthe title appears to be a one-teamrace.The second interesting race willbe for fourth place since the top fourteams make the playoffs in Class 5A.Grapevine, which lost nearly everyoffensive starter, made the playoffsthe last three years and should begood enough to compete for the fi nalspot again. The Mustangs and Trinity have acombined four state championshipsin the last four years and are the onlyteams in 5-5A to win a title. FossilRidge, a pass-happy team, is new tothe district but will be play a big rolein the playoff race with a bulk of itsstarters back. The winner of the Grapevine/FossilRidge game will likely steal the fi nalplayoff spot that Northwest, L.D. Belland Keller want to grab.L.D. Bell has been down the lastthree years but is always in the thickof the playoff race. Keller is thin ondepth and will fi nd it hard to competewith the top-tier teams of the district.Continued from 36a solid prospect. It will most likelybe running-back-by-committeefor Coach Olivo. Linemen AndrewModica, Christian Baskin andGarrett Somers will be leadingthe way for whomever carries thefootball. The Bell defense was in theTop 15 in the area last year, butonly returns three starters. Defensivelineman Josh Mauro (6-6,210 lbs.) brings experience andheight to the line and is joined bylineman Nove Finau. All-districtcornerback Mike Trujillo returns,as does linebacker Steven Uasiketo give the defensive secondarysome experience. Theunit will probably be a far cry fromlast years group, but the returningstarters are very talented.KellerLast year’s record: 4-7, 3-4 indistrict playLettermen: 18Offensive starters: 5Defensive starters: 4After losing to Flower MoundMarcus in the first round of theplayoffs last year, Keller HeadCoach Kevin Atkinson was facedwith the difficult challenge of replacinghis starting quarterbackas well as his top three rushersand receivers. It looks as ifhe may have pulled it off. With agood core of returning players, the Indians could make a surpriserun towards the postseason.Taking the reins at quarterbackwill most likely be Camm Allerheilgen. In 2007, Allerheilgen wasthe star for the JV team, throwingfor almost 3,000 yards. At 6-feet-3-inches and 200 pounds, Allerheilgencould fill the slot vacatedby Crawford Jones very nicely.Seniors Evan Perkins andAaron Young will move from theNo. 3 and No. 4 receivers to thego-to guys for Allerheilgen in theIndiand offense. Perkins, thoughundersized, is a tough receiverthat can also double as a runningback. Last year he caught 33 ballsDISTRICT 5-5A OPPONENTSfor 442 yards and 3 touchdownsand also ran for 147 yards and 2touchdowns. Young, an all-districtplayer last year, will complementPerkins nicely. Senior Matt Whitecould also fight for playing time atreceiver.Junior Kelo Webster will probablyfill the role of running backafter seeing limited action as asophomore in 2007, but standoutsophomore Bear Allbritton (6-1,205 lbs.) could also get sometouches. The returning starterson the offensive line bring sizewith tackle Nick Ask (6-5, 275lbs.), Nate Richards (6-3, 265lbs.), and all-district player BryanCollins (6-3, 260 lbs.).Defensively, linebacker JakeMizell and cornerback White returnto help lead the defense.Linebackers Randy McMinn andOskar Cadena bring depth to thelinebackers, and John Allison is astandout defensive back, alongwith Robbie Love and Kyle Fields. On the D-line, all of the startersgraduated, and Coach Atkinsonwill have to look to players fromthe JV squad to fill the holes.Keller CentralLast year’s record: 1-9, 1-6 indistrict playLettermen: 28Offensive starters: 8Defensive starters: 6Youth was the problem lastyear for the Central Chargers andCoach Bart Helsley. The Chargersreturn 28 lettermen from lastyear’s team, including the startingquarterback, the top two runningbacks, and three of their top fivereceivers, along with three offensivelinemen.Senior Dustin Stenta (5-11,195 lbs.) is a dual-threat quarterback, throwing for 2,639 yardsand 29 touchdowns last year andleading the team in rushing with460 yards on 90 carries. A year ofexperience will only make Stentabetter, and look for him to put upsimilar numbers through the airand on the ground.True running back Trenton Turrentineis only a junior, and had animpressive sophomore season. He may take carries away fromStenta, but that shouldn’t makethe running game suffer. Withguards Jake Lafferty and AlexPerales and tackle Cody Cuttingreturning to block for Turrentine,he could put up big numbers. The receiver to watch is 6-foot-5-inch Jarrod Darden. He hauledin 46 catches for 739 yards lastyear, and is a touchdown specialist, catching 14 in 2007. ComplementingDarden will be juniorIsrael Valentin, who caught 24passes in his sophomore season.Safety Jake Patterson leadsthe defense, joined by returnersNeal Vaughn at linebacker andAnthony Linder at tackle. SeniorsJake Bray, Brad McGuire, C.J.Cartwright and Matt Boles joinVaughn at linebacker. Both Peralesand Lafferty could see sometime on the defensive line. SeniorJonathan Wilson could challengefor playing time in the secondary.
