4A WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Sunday, May 2, 2010OPINIONOTHER VIEWSImmigration debate takes center stageObamaand mediahyperventilateover new lawBy FLOYD AND MARYBETH BROWNPresident Obama, the media, liberal elites – and evensome Republicans – haverushed to decry Arizona’simmigration enforcementlaw with shocking hyperbole. This bill is constitutional, and it addresses apressing issue at the statelevel because the federalgovernment has shirked responsibilityfor years. Whilethe critics would have youbelieve enforcing America’simmigration law is thesecond coming of fascism, the Arizona law properlyemphasizes enforcement ina manner that upholds theConstitution and basic principlesof human decency.Nevertheless, EugeneRobinson, the WashingtonPost columnist, denouncedthe law by saying, “Arizo-Continued on page 9AArizona:Your appointedgovernor is acowardBy TINA DUPUYAn hour south of Tucsonyou’ll find desertedsilver mines used to makeConfederate bullets in thelatter days of the Civil War.The settlers of the regiontried and failed to gain thefederal government’s protectionfor their businessinterests. They were at warwith the Apache tribe anddesperate to have federaltroops present so they couldexcavate in a place namedafter the Aztec word for“silver-bearing.” The fedsignored them. The then-residents,numbering in the thousands, probably by countingeveryone twice, decided tosecede from the Union. Sowhen Arizona cries foul atthe federal government’sshortcomings, this time it’snot new territory.Continued on page 8AYOUR VIEWSVote for Quanz andHowardAs we go to the polls to vote for schoolboard members, let’s think seriously aboutcandidate qualifications. Ruby Quanz andJerry Howard bring experience to thesepositions as they are the incumbents. Both have served as classroom teachers, school managers, dealt with TEA rules andregulations and worked side-by-side withclassroom teachers for years. They knowwhat we need.Ruby and Jerry are interested in preparingthe youth of our school system for lifethrough better education. They will manageour campuses, finances and curriculumto the best advantage for all students. Both will focus on the needs to prepareour students for the future and will not beinfluenced by input from relatives that arepresently employed by the district. Please vote for education, not turf.Robert TalleyDecaturThanks for cleaning upI would like to thank whomever pickedup the old recliner that was dumped alongsidethe railroad tracks on Old DecaturRoad outside of Alvord. Whether it was thecounty, or a kind individual, thank you foryour effort. It did not go unnoticed or unappreciated.Rose StuberAlvordTopic of turf will crop upI thought we had a bond election thatspoke loud and clear that this communitydoes not want turf at the expense of taxpayers.Perhaps we won’t see this happenopenly, but I predict that this topic will appearon the agenda of a school board meetingrather quickly if either Jerry Howardor Ruby Quanz is defeated. Will turf come before crucial maintenanceprojects that have been noted sincethe community committee met severalyears ago, prior to our successful bond electionthat brought us Young Elementary? This committee was told by the schooladministration at that time not to worryabout the maintenance issues; that themaintenance issues would be handled. If“handled” means pushed aside, then, theyhave been handled. Will turf come before maintaining ahealthy reserve fund which provides thefinancial security for the district? Gary Micinskihas guided Decatur School Districtto becoming a sound and enviable districtfinancially. It is imperative that our financesremain strong.Turf is not a bad idea or one that mostwould veto. However, now is not the time, and it is certainly not the time to replacestrong educators and reasonable schoolboard members like Ruby Quanz and JerryHoward.Merle FosterDecaturWhy the cover-up?An April 25 article, “Exit Agreement”pays Stone $150,000” stated, “The BoydSchool District will pay SuperintendentGreg Stone $150,000 for agreeing to resign.”What? Why?First of all, thank you Wise County Messengerfor filing an open records request toget the information that should have beenpublic information from the beginning. Unfortunately, there are more questions thananswers in the information. If there isn’t “any wrongdoing whatsoever,”as the agreement states, why thepayoff? Let Mr. Stone fulfill his contract fortwo more years. If not – fire him. It’s thatsimple. Why the confidentiality clause? I see ared flag. What’s the $150,000 secret? Thereis definitely wrongdoing here, and it’s tothe taxpayers.Madeline SnowBoydTea party full of bigotsLet’s play a little mind game here in“red-city, red-county, red-state, Texas.” Itwon’t take long. Choosing a topic I know isnear and dear to all whose claimed partyallegiance begins with a “T,” let’s use ourimaginations. With a nod given to the consumersof green tea, it’s a simple fact thatthe largest percentage of tea consumed inthe world is black tea. One may safely betthere will never be a “black tea party.”Let’s suppose that the folks gatheringnear our nation’s capitol on the anniversaryof the Murrow Federal Building bombingin Oklahoma City were of African ancestryin whole or in part rather than being100 percent Caucasian. What if they weremostly Mexican or Puerto Rican or any of aslightly darker complexion? I won’t mentionthose of American Indian ancestryas that has been tried already, and we allknow how that “protest” ended. A quotecomes to mind: “The only good Injun is adead Injun.”Here’s another stretch. Suppose the 16percent, or more than 30 million citizensof 21st century America who are self-describedagnostic, atheist or none-of-theabovein the religious category descendedon D.C. and its nearby Virginia suburbs.Suppose they were armed with those Communist-designedand built AK-47 assaultrifles many tea partiers seem to love. Whatthen? Now imagine that a few white membersof Congress were surrounded by thousandsof angry people from either supposedethnic group, and one of the protestersproceeded to spit on one of those congressmenfor not voting in accordance with hisdesires.Would the protesters be seen as merelypatriotic Americans voicing their opinions,or as an angry, potentially violent andeven insurrectionist mob? After all, this iswhat bigoted white tea party protesters didrecently in Washington.Wouldn’t those members of Congressstanding on the balcony above showingsigns of support for whichever group wasthreatening their fellow members be guiltyof sedition and insurrection? In any pointof law with which I am familiar, there areseveral members of the present U.S. Congressguilty of precisely that.Simply put, today’s “tea partiers” areclearly the most bigoted, white people inAmerica. Moreover, from all indications, they do indeed “cling to their guns andBibles” and make all self-respecting Americanswho value our Constitution sick totheir stomachs.Ken HughesDecaturAbout LettersThe Wise County Messenger welcomesletters to the editor. Al Sharpton ispromising to come to Arizonato march in oppositionto the law. Obama decriedthe law as “misguided” and“poorly conceived.” Obamaeven falsely claimed thata Hispanic family eatingice cream could be forcedto provide their papers justbecause they had dark skin.CBS News used fascist referencesto attack the law. These critics completelymiss the mark. If thesecritics had read the law, they would know that it primarilyfocuses on enforcingexisting federal law at thestate level. The section thathas been misconstrued themost reads, “For any lawfulcontact made by a law enforcementofficial or agencyof this state or a county, city, town or other politicalsubdivision of this statewhere reasonable suspicionexists that the personis an alien who is unlawfullypresent in the UnitedStates, a reasonable attemptshall be made, whenpracticable, to determinethe immigration status ofthe person.” While somelike Obama interpret thisprovision as allowing policeofficers to round up Hispanicindividuals and ask fortheir papers, it is anythingbut. The initial contactmust be lawful. And thelaw was carefully written topreclude racial discrimination.Section 2 provides thata law enforcement official“may not solely considerrace, color, or national origin”in making any stopsor determining an alien’simmigration status. In order to clarify thenon-discriminatory natureof the statute, ArizonaGov. Jan Brewer issued anexecutive order requiringtraining to “provide clearguidance to law enforcementofficials regardingwhat constitutes reasonablesuspicion, and shall makeclear that an individual’srace, color or national originalone cannot be groundfor reasonable suspicion tobelieve any law has beenviolated.”Arizona Police Associationboard member Ken Cranesaid the new law prohibitsofficers from targeting peoplebased on race, nationalorigin and other identifyingfactors. Every rookie officeris trained extensively at thepolice academy on how tojudge probable cause andreasonable suspicion. Cranesaid whatever training isdeveloped should reinforcelong-standing police standards.“It’s basic police workthat’s never changed,” hesaid. “We’re not reinventingthe wheel here.” Not onlydoes the law prohibit discrimination, the governor isalso going out of her way toinstitute new training forofficers so they can enforceit properly. One of the most absurdreactions to the law wasfrom the government ofMexico, which issued atravel warning regardingArizona. “There is an adversepolitical environmentfor migrant communitiesand all Mexican visitors,”Mexico’s ministry said. Thisis quite ironic given thatthe Mexican governmenthas much more stringentimmigration standardsthan the U.S., and they willbar foreigners if they upset“the equilibrium of the nationaldemographics.”These hyperbolic criticsignore what is happeningin Arizona. Currently, morethan 500,000 illegal alienslive in Arizona. Arizonarancher Rob Krentz wasrecently gunned down onhis own land, presumablyby a drug runner. Obamaignored the calls of Sen.John McCain and otherArizona lawmakers to dispatchthe National Guard. Our borders are wide openand criminals are floodingthrough while the U.S.government continues todither and turn a blind eye.It is no surprise that thenew law has a 70 percentapproval rating amongArizonans according toRasmussen, and Brewstersaw her popularity rise by15 percent after the bill wassigned into law.Americans want ourimmigration laws to beenforced. We want to livein an open and free societywithout fear of our governmentor fear of criminals. This law strikes an importantbalance betweendefending precious personalliberties and enforcing ourimmigration law. The law’scritics should be honest andadmit that they currentlyignore enforcing immigrationlaw because they wantto change it. They support ademographic realignment ofthe USA through immigrationthat most Americansoppose. The Browns are bestsellingauthors and speakers.Together they write anational weekly columndistributed exclusively byCagle Cartoons newspapersyndicate. No greater satisfaction and contentment willyou ever receive than by following our Creator’s words spoken through the Bible. Thesatisfaction of having money and the things money can buy are often short lived. If we don’t set our priorities right, coveting money can cause us problems; “For thelove of money is the root of all evil…” (I Tim. 6:10). If we really want long-termcontentment, then following the guidebook God provided us will not only bringgreat happiness in this present world but eternal life in the kingdom to come. Jesusspoke about a sower sowing seed. The seed being cast out is the Word or God’sinstruction. When he tells about the seed (word) that was sown among thorns(people), they hear the word but have a different set of priorities that creates astumbling block. “And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, andlust of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful” (Mark4:19). To change our natural ways and desires can be one of the hardest things toovercome but not impossible if we follow God’s word. The key to escape from ournatural tendencies are obedience, faith and trust. To get faith requires study: “Sothen faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Rom 10:17). Totrust in what our instruction book tells us will bring some of the greatest enjoymentsout of life that all of the riches in the world cannot buy. The Lord has blessed mewith a loving family and especially with a wonderful helper, my wife—these thingsmoney cannot buy. “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord…” (Jer 17:7).Second Advent Christian Church1902 Wedgewood Ct. in Stillwater, OK918-225-3426 or 405-624-3334Steve Ryan

10A WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Sunday, May 2, 2010WISE COUNTYJail will stick with cart systemBy KRISTEN TRIBESnack time was secured for WiseCounty Jail inmates Thursday morning.Commissioners awarded the jail’scommissary bid to Commissary Expressin Dallas during a special meeting. The bid included a 32-percent commissionrate for the county.Swanson Services in DeSoto actuallyoffered a 34.5-percent rate for thecounty, but Sheriff David Walker didnot recommend Swanson because itdoes not offer a cart system. He said the cart system is more convenient, and it allows the jail to offercommissary twice a week instead ofonce.“We’re selling a lot more with the cartthan we were the other way,” Walkersaid. The cart, loaded with goods, isbrought to each cell, and inmates canpurchase what they want directly fromthe cart. A barcode scanner is used toscan the inmate’s I.D. bracelet and theproducts they request.Without the cart system, inmateshave to fill out a Scantron to place anNEWS BRIEFSorder. Walker said they’ve “had troublewith inmates and Scantrons,” and itrequires extra work for the jail staffto make sure Scantrons are filled outproperly and to deliver the orders. Theythen have to make additional deliveriesif the orders weren’t filled correctly.“In labor and everything, you thinkit will cost less (to go with CommissaryExpress)?” asked Precinct 3 CommissionerGlenn Hughes.Walker answered, “Yes.”E-mail Kristen at ktribe@wcmessenger.com.SubscribeOnline.www.wcmessenger.com/subscribeFISH DAY!4-6”6-8”8-11"Also available: Bass, Crappie, Hybrid Bluegill, Bluegill, Redear Bream, Minnows.Tommy’sFish TruckNo No Pre-orders Necessary!Just Show Up!Just 501-796-6349 Show Up!www.tommysfishday.com501-796-6349$39 /100 Catfish$59 /100 Catfish$95 /100 CatfishWednesday., May 5Decatur • 9 - 10 a.m.AGvantage Farm & Ranch1817 N.
