Extension AgentMost people know theyshould increase their activitylevel by walking or takingan aerobics class. In fact, many of you probably madea New Year’s resolution tostart exercising Jan. 1 andhave already given up.Is there any hope? The answeris yes. Changing anyhabit requires several triesand a great deal of effort formost people. Increasing youractivity level can have agreat impact on your healthboth now and later in life.A recent article in the Arhivesof Internal Medicinereported on a study where100 middle-aged womenwere encouraged to walk forexercise while another 100were not encouraged to walk.Ten years later, women inthe walking group had significantlyless health problemsthan the non-walkinggroup of women. The women in the walkinggroup were walking sevenmiles more each week thanthose in the other group.Only 2 percent of the walkinggroup was diagnosedwith heart disease, whereasalmost 13 percent of thenon-walkers had a diagnosisof heart disease. Walkersalso had fewer hospitalizations, surgeries and falls.Participating in the shorttermwalking program 10years earlier was the maindifference between thesetwo groups. So, trying againis important. Studies haveshown that walking withothers and engaging in aprogram long enough tomake walking a habit promotesuccess.February is when wepromote the Walk AcrossTexas program as a way toget started now with thehealthy habit of walking. This year, however, <strong>Wise</strong><strong>County</strong>'s Walk Across Texas2010 will be postponed as aresult of the Texas AgriLifeExtension Service and theTexas Education Agencypartnership to Walk AcrossTexas during Texas ObesityAwareness Week which isobserved in mid-September.Until then, I encourageyou to find a group of friends,co-workers or family membrsand start establishingthe healthy habit of walking.Anyone who is interestedin using the Walk AcrossTexas program on their ownmay do so by going to www.walkacrosstexas.tamu.edu.It is available year-round.Getting started is the hardpart, but starting and continuingis much easier withthe support of others. For information on theWalk Across Texas program, call the Extension office at(940) 627-3341.Frigidaire 23 Cu FtS X S Stainless SteelRefrigeratorYOU PAYONLY $ 99 99*A MONTHOWN IT IN ONLY 24 MONTHS!EVERYDAY LOW PRICE $1499.99VOTEBrenda StarnesROWEFORDISTRICT CLERKWISE COUNTYYou now have a choice!VOTE CHOICE ~ VOTE ROWEPolitical Ad paid and approved by Brenda Rowe, Matthew Rowe, Treasurer.THE IMPORTANCE OF A PAPTESTCervical cancer may not have symptoms, but it can be diagnosed with aPap test. Otherwise known as a Pap smear, this test involves collectingcells from the cervix, which connects the uterus and the vagina, andstudying them under a microscope. If the test detects abnormal cellchanges, follow-up tests and/or a biopsy may be indicated. Cervicalcancer that is caught early can usually be cured; very early detectionand treatment can lead to the preservation of childbearing capability. Ifyour Pap smears have always been normal, women ages 21-30 shouldget a Pap test every 2 years. BIRDS AND BEYONDALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, February 11, 2010 9By CLAIRE CURRYIt seems a little early forbirds to be nesting, doesn’t it?We just had a big snowstormlast month and it’s still rathercold most days. While most ofour birds are not nesting yet,a few are getting started. Some resident songbirds, like cardinals, titmice andchickadees, are starting tosing, but it is the hawks andowls that are nesting. Despitetheir similar appearance withsharp, hooked beaks andclaws, they are not closely related. They merely use similarniches, with hawks huntingduring the day and owlsat night.Red-tailed and red-shoulderedhawks begin nesting inlate January to mid February. They begin by carrying sticksto their nests, often repairingnests from previous years. This building or repair workcan take weeks to months. Our common Red-tailedHawk usually places itsnest in a tall tree, althoughin some regions it will neston cliff faces. red-shoulderedhawks also nest in tall trees, but their nests are often inmore wooded areas. The familiar scream of ared-tailed hawk is usuallyonly used in the breedingseason for communicatingwithin the pair and as a territorialcall. It is also used inplace of the bald eagle’s callsin TVs and movies, much tothe annoyance of bird-watcherseverywhere. (The baldeagle’s actual squeaking callsare not so fearsome.)Red-shouldered hawkshave a “keeeeeeyurrrr” callthat is not as harsh as a redtailed’scall. Bluejays often imitate italmost perfectly, soalways look for thesource. Both red-tailedand red-shoulderedhawks typically laytwo to three eggs, which the femaleincubates for threeto four weeks. Themale may help incubate, but mostly brings food. After another month anda half, the young can leavethe nest. They often start byclambering out on nearbybranches and will flap theirwings a lot before actuallyflying. It takes several weeksfor them to learn to hunt ontheir own.Our two common large owls, barred and greathorned, begin nestingbefore hawks (Iheard great hornedhooting back in December)and willtake up residence inold hawk nests. Theywill also use naturalcavities in trees androcky ledges. TheyCURRY rarely nest on theground.Like our hawks, they typicallylay two to three eggs andincubate them for about fourweeks. The adorably fuzzyyoung owls will often leavethe nest at 4 to 6 weeks old,but they can’t fly yet. Evenonce they can fly, though, youwill still hear their hungryscreams echoing through thewoods as they beg for dinnerGREAT HORNED OWLfor months afterwards. In both hawks and owls, thefemale begins incubating theeggs as soon as the first oneis laid. This means the younghatch in a series. Older siblingsoften get fed first, and iffood is scarce, the larger oldersiblings will eat the youngerones. This seems a bit harsh tohumans, but it gets the olderoffspring a meal and eliminatestheir competition forany more food that mom ordad might bring in.Another interesting thingabout some raptors is that femalesare larger than malesin many species. This can allowmales and females to takedifferent-sized prey and thususe two different resources. If you see a pair together, you can distinguish the maleand the female by their sizes. If they have different plumagepatterns, as Red-tailedsoften do (for example, onemay have a dark throat andthe other may have a lightthroat, or one will have a bellyband), you can then identifyyour territory’s male andfemale when they are apart.Do be cautious if you finda hawk or owl nest that youwish to observe. Many arevery easily spooked by a lotof activity and may abandontheir nest site. They also havethe capability to seriously injurea person who wanderstoo close to their nest – raptorresearchers often wearhelmets.Keep a sharp lookout forour magnificent birds of prey. You might see them carryingsticks to their nest or catchingrats for their mates. Ina few months they may takea dangling snake home tothe young’uns. But for now, they’re bringing in springwith their nesting activities, even if it is only February. At any time of the year, younever know what wondersyou will spy.!The next monthly field tripon the Lyndon B.
