-Materials <strong>and</strong> Methods- 3 Materials <strong>and</strong> Methods The field work was done from the end <strong>of</strong> August to the beginning <strong>of</strong> November in 2007. On 71 plots (Fig. 3.1) vegetation in different <strong>forest</strong> types, which were determined visually before, was sampled. We recorded vegetation, st<strong>and</strong> structure, <strong>and</strong> rejuvenation in 59 <strong>of</strong> those sampling plots. In 11 plots we only recorded vegetation <strong>and</strong> rejuvenation. Preferably the least influenced plots were chosen, regarding <strong>forest</strong>ry <strong>and</strong> grazing. This design was not applicable in four cases, however vegetation was sampled in smaller sized plots (about 60 m²) adapted to the respective site conditions. The cover <strong>of</strong> each vascular plant species occurring in a plot was estimated as well as the cover <strong>of</strong> the herb layer, shrub layer, lower tree layer, upper tree layer <strong>and</strong> bare ground. As cover scale we used the ten scaled North Carolina vegetation index (Peet et al. 1998). Mean height <strong>of</strong> the tree layer was roughly estimated. The vine layer was estimated in a scale ranging from 0 to 3 with “0” (no vines), “1” (low presence), “2” (at least every third tree covered) <strong>and</strong> “3”(every -<strong>Ecology</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>regeneration</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>forest</strong> <strong>communities</strong> on the alluvial fan near Qakh (Northwestern Azerbaijan)- 8

Nomenclature follows the Russian reference list (Czerepanov 1995).
