FOREWORD Let me take this opportunity to wish all members, friends and associates a Happy New Year! To all our Chinese friends, I wish you abundance and prosperity as we usher in the Year of the Ox on 26 January. May the strong broad shoulders of the Ox bring you a harvest of good health and great wealth this lunar new year! Since the economic decline in September last year, a lot of us are facing various economic crunches. The Club is no different. We too are feeling the weight of the economic downturn. Members of the staff are being challenged to find more creative ways to increase our revenue channels and reduce costs. THE BLUE HERON is one of the Management’s strategic moves to take the Club in a new direction. They have taken a bold shift to increase its attractiveness to advertisers in the hope of raking more advertising dollars. To those of you who are looking at competitive and creative advertising channels, do consider and support THE BLUE HERON. Let us make THE BLUE HERON the unique publication that advertisers will want to get their hands on, in order to reach the exclusive network of JCC members. Another unique strategic alliance was the engagement of Christina Chen, a wellknown artist whose paintings are easily worth thousands of dollars. We wanted art pieces to beautify our walls, to share the splendour of our course with the nongolfers. We commissioned Christina who agreed to paint and donate two amazing pieces to the Club, thus saving the Club over $20,000. We hope members will extend their support to Christina as she displays her artwork at our lobby from 9 to 13 January. Half the proceeds from the sale will be donated to charity. I look forward to seeing you at the event, which will also see Dr Ho Kah Leong and Mr Tan Kim Ser as guests of honour. The Committees and Management teams are also working hand in hand to control costs. Maintaining a club of our size is no easy matter. The day may come that we can no longer hold out on increasing fees that have not been reviewed in a long time. This will definitely be a difficult and sensitive issue but it is my hope that when the time comes, members will continue to extend their understanding and support. I am sure many will want to know the progress on our hotel project. Discussions on this are long and lengthy but I assure members we are taking the comments shared during our last dialogue session seriously. We are looking into your concerns and suggestions and, when the time is right, will hold another dialogue session to present our latest developments. On a more solemn note, I would like to extend my personal condolences to the family of the late Bernard Sim. Bernard had been a stalwart member for 31 years, joining the Club when it was only two years, way back in 1977. Bernard had been a friend and mentor to many, both in his work and personally. We are sad to have lost such a dear friend and he will be sorely missed. In a tribute to him, we are organising a golf game in his memory. Watch out for more information on the Bernard Sim Golf Challenge, and I hope to see you at this tribute to our dear friend. NEWS Happy New Year! Gong Xi Fa Cai! We take this opportunity to wish all members, friends and dassociates so of Jurong Country Club a Happy New Year and Gong Xi Fa Cai as we usher in 2009 and the Year of the Ox. Let us ride out the stormy economic weather er with good cheer. As the proverb goes, “It is always darkest before the dawn” – brighter days will come yet! This is after all the Year of the Earth Ox, a symbol of prosperity through fortitude and hard work. A born leader, the Oxhas the innate ability to achieve great things and capable of enduring any amount of hardship. Life Savers On 3 November 2008, the Straits Times carried an article on how having more heart defibrillators will save lives. 4 jurong country club Did you know that we have three automated external defibrillators (AED) in the Club We also send our operational staff for training on how to use the AED in cases of emergency, as well as CPR. However, such knowledge should not be exclusive to the operational staff – anyone can use the AED, whether or not you are CPR-trained, hence its user-friendly design and automated instructions. Life saving kit Staff being trained on CPR and AED Enchanted Spell Warrior Justice Club Closed for Staff Day In recognition of the staff’s hard work, Jurong Country Club will be closed on Monday, 23 February 2009 (whole day) to celebrate the JCC Annual Staff Day. We would like to take this opportunity to seek members’ kind contribution for the event. We welcome any amount of sponsorship (cash or kind) to make the Staff Day a happy and successful one for the staff. You can make your cash or prize donation at either the Golf or Poolside Reception Counters. All sponsorships will be acknowledged in THE BLUE HERON and the hearts of our JCC staff.
