Issues & Complaints
Voting Slips Issued ≠ Voting Slips in the Ballot Box
In the election for position A1.a (JCR President), there were three additional ballot papers in the
box compared to the number of slips issued.
The reason for this is thought to be names not being crossed of, or not being crossed off clearly
enough. Additionally, the number of additional votes was three, which, compared to the size of the
majority in the election, is sufficiently insignificant.
Therefore no action was taken.
I recommend that in future, more care is taken when crossing off those that received ballot papers.
UVC Already Used
Five Unique Voter Codes (UVCs) appeared to have already been used when voters tried to use
them.
The reason for this is unknown, although it may be caused by problems with the mi-vote system.
Some of these used UVCs are thought to have been caused by double-clicking instead of singleclicking
on the link in the email.
The UVCs concerned were deleted from the system and the voters were issued new codes.
I recommend that in future, similar action is taken.
Candidates Nominating Incorrectly
On Sunday 14 th November, a number of candidates submitted incomplete nominations. Most
commonly, the nominations were not supported by permission from tutors.
The lack of permission from tutors was often due to tutor's checking their email less often at
weekends.
For positions where a candidate successfully nominated, candidates with incomplete nominations
were provisionally accepted and given a deadline of midnight on Tuesday 16 th November to
complete their nominations. It was decided to do this in order to promote competition for
positions. For positions where no candidate successfully nominated, candidates with incomplete
nominations were rejected, allowing nominations to be re-opened until midday on Wednesday 17 th
November. This gave the candidates time to complete their nominations and allowed others to
nominate in the case of nominations not being completed.
I recommend that in future, similar action is taken.
Posters Put Up in Disallowed Locations
This year, we allowed candidates for President ten posters and candidates for other positions
which were contested five posters, to be displayed in the JCR or on college notice boards. The
posters seem to have been a good idea, and seemed to boost interest in the election. However, only
one third of those who were entitled produced posters. A small number of posters were displayed
in disallowed locations, such as attached to walls.
This is thought to have been caused by a lack of awareness of the rules.
The offending posters were removed and the candidates' allowances reduced for each poster in a
disallowed location.
I recommend that in future, the rules surrounding posters are made more clear and that similar
action is taken concerning posters in disallowed locations.
No Photos & Manifestos on the Website
This year, candidates for posts other than president were allowed to submit a photo and a
manifesto to be displayed on mi-vote. Several candidates did not submit a photo or manifesto.
Candidates were told they could submit these in the Election Regulations and reminded in an
email.
No photos or manifestos were displayed by those candidates who did not submit them.
I recommend that in future, this is more strongly encouraged and more reminders are sent.
