JBL Vertec Reinforces
Rock in Rio… in Lisbon

Audio Equipment
provided a massive JBL
Vertec line array system
at Rock in Rio, one of
the world’s largest music
festivals. The first in two
series of shows, Rock
in Rio Lisbon featured
performances by Lenny
Kravitz, Bob Dylan, Bon
Jovi, Metallica, Rod Stewart,
and Linkin Park. The second series
of shows in Madrid featured Bob
Dylan, Franz Ferdinand, Chris
Cornell, Neil Young, Shakira, The
Police, and Amy Winehouse.
In both locations, Gabisom
deployed a JBL Vertec system
with four array locations for
the main (World Stage) system.
A total of 120 VT4889 largeformat
line array elements and
60 VT4880A Ultra Long Excursion
subwoofers were deployed
in the main suspend arrays.
The main system consisted of
four arrays across the front in the
normal L/R
(front), LL/RR
( o u t f i l l )
configuration.

Rio, explained:
“The main PA
was set up in a
non-traditional
and unusual
manner, which
we call ‘side-by-side.’ It was nontraditional
for line array systems
because of its mammoth size,
and also unusual because it was
intentionally designed to have
a greater amount of acoustical
output than usual.”
Gabisom also provided six
Digidesign Venue systems for the
event, as well as an Icon D-Control
for post production tasks. Four
D-Show consoles and two
D-Show Profiles were in service
at FOH and monitor positions. At
the same time, all performances
were simultaneously recorded
on dual Pro Tools|HD systems,
creating preliminary mixes
in real time using one of the
D-Show Profile consoles, and
remixing by artists’ request with
a studio-quality environment
on the ICON system and D-
Control console.

Broadcasting in Spain has witnessed a spectacular
expansion in recent years with the emergence
of new commercial operators and the launch of
digital services.
The cable and satellite TV markets are growing
steadily, and a free-to-air digital terrestrial TV
(DTT) service was relaunched in late 2005.
The government aims to switch off of analogue TV
transmissions by 2010.
Home-produced dramas, ‘reality’ shows and longrunning
‘telenovelas’ are staple fare on primetime TV.
Public radio and TV services are run by RadioTelevision
Espanola (RTVE), which is funded by advertising and
state subsidies. As well as public and commercial national
TV networks, there are 13 regional stations backed by
regional governments and many local stations.
Multi-channel TV is offered by the satellite platform
Digital Plus.
