Year 9 last year and he was recognized for
AFL excellence. He still has a big sporting
future ahead of him. These awards are fine
examples of our school ethos of personal best.

Buses – bus passes have been issued to
students. Problems with overcrowding have
been minimized but if any issues arise please
contact the school or Brookvale Depot (Ph
9941 5816). Year 7 students are given priority
in bus queues for the first three weeks.
Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme – next
Monday from 5:00 – 6:30pm a meeting will be
held for all students interested in participating
in this scheme at Freshwater Senior Campus.
Representatives from the scheme and
Somerset Outdoor Learning Centre will be
speaking. Students need to be in groups of 12
prior to the evening. There will be sign up point
outside the auditorium. Camp dates are the 5
– 6th and 12 – 13th March. There is a limit of
five groups (60 students per weekend) to
comply with regulations.
Congratulations are given to a relatively large
group of Year 12 students who completed their
expedition components for their gold medal
over the summer holidays. They did a four day
practice expedition, two days training and then
their four day test expedition. The test included
walking for two days along the Great North
Walk from Wollombi to Glenworth Valley –
camping overnight under the Mooney Mooney
Bridge followed by a day of horse riding and
for the final day, kayaking down to the
Hawkesbury River Bridge, exhausted but very
happy with their achievements. The treks were
organised through Glenworth Valley whose
staff commented that they were a “fantastic”
group. Adelaide Welling, Liam Watson,
Tracey Lloyd, Eleanor Russell, Stacey Rose-
Ackroyd, Rebecca Borys and Emme Hoy
fulfilled the goals of the scheme with
distinction.
Uniform – the beginning of the school year is
the best time to ensure that all students have
appropriate uniform. The year has begun very
well for nearly all students and random uniform
checks will begin next week. Shoes should be
black enclosed leather or vinyl (NOT canvas or
sports style except on Wednesdays), school
shorts or pants (including Wednesdays –
board shorts are NOT allowed) and school
shirts (not tee shirts or sleeveless shirts.
Seniors will get a warning but if they are
persistent in not wearing uniform, parents are
contacted before students are sent home to
change.
NSW Performing Arts Unit Ensembles –
each year talented musicians can audition for
state music ensembles. This commitment is in
addition to their participation in school
ensembles and requires a great degree of
travel to Lewisham on a weekly basis.
Students included in the NSW Symphonic
Wind Orchestra are Clare Leckie (Year 7) and
Kate Jackson (Year 8). Those in the
Symphonic Wind Ensemble are James Power
(Year 11), Jessie Deere (Year 10), Shane
Leviton (Year 10) and Babette Auzins (Year
12). As well, James will play with the Jazz
Orchestra and Shane joins the Millenium
Marching Band.
Congratulations to:
Lara Jones (Year 8) and Emily Washer
(Year 9) who were members of the U14
girls medley relay team that won gold at
the NSW State Age 13-18 Yr swimming
championships. Lara swam the backstroke
leg and Emily the butterfly both achieving
personal bests.
Rachel Holland (Year 9) upon her selection
to participate in the NSW CHSSA Girls
Softball State Carnival as part of the
Northern Sydney Region team next week.
Paul Darmanin (Year 11) upon his
selection to represent Australia at the
Youth Sailing World Championships in
Croatia July 7- 16 2011 as part of the
OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian
Youth Sailing Team of 12 sailors from
across Australia.
