This is the first full electronic version of The
Weekly Pines for the year. All subsequent
editions for this term will be emailed. If any
families did not receive last week’s mailout and
enclosed fee sheets and contact details
sheets, please contact the school. ALL forms
are to be returned with or without amendments
to the front office as soon as possible.
Enclosed in this bulletin is a pared version of
the very busy school calendar with key dates
for parent nights, exams, major events and
holidays. This calendar is to assist with
planning for families but should be checked
against the regular term calendar attached to
the weekly newsletter.

P&C Meeting 16 th February – I would
encourage as many parents as possible to
become involved in the school in whatever
way they wish. The P&C meetings are an
excellent way of finding out what is happening
within the school and to be able to contribute
to discussions. The first meeting will be an
informal evening with refreshments served in
the foyer. The SRC captains will be giving
reports on the SRC and we will look at HSC,
building improvements and initiatives for 2011.
House Captains 2011 – congratulations are
extended to the following students who have
been elected as captains for this year. The
team includes excellent student leaders and
sportspeople who I am confident will build
house and school spirit. Their first major role
will be the school swimming carnival.

North Sydney Region 2010 Sports Blues
Awards – last Monday I had the pleasure of
attending the annual sports association dinner
recognizing outstanding sports achievements
across the region which extends to the Central
Coast and includes some large school from
Sydney Region. Out of 18 schools, there were
28 Blues presented, eight of which went to the
College including three for our campus. Last
year’s Year 12 students, Joel Anscombe and
Lauren Parnaby, were recognized for soccer
and softball respectively as well as achieving
excellent HSC results. Erol Sertbas was in

Year 9 last year and he was recognized for
AFL excellence. He still has a big sporting
future ahead of him. These awards are fine
examples of our school ethos of personal best.

Buses – bus passes have been issued to
students. Problems with overcrowding have
been minimized but if any issues arise please
contact the school or Brookvale Depot (Ph
9941 5816). Year 7 students are given priority
in bus queues for the first three weeks.
Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme – next
Monday from 5:00 – 6:30pm a meeting will be
held for all students interested in participating
in this scheme at Freshwater Senior Campus.
Representatives from the scheme and
Somerset Outdoor Learning Centre will be
speaking. Students need to be in groups of 12
prior to the evening. There will be sign up point
outside the auditorium. Camp dates are the 5
– 6th and 12 – 13th March. There is a limit of
five groups (60 students per weekend) to
comply with regulations.
Congratulations are given to a relatively large
group of Year 12 students who completed their
expedition components for their gold medal
over the summer holidays. They did a four day
practice expedition, two days training and then
their four day test expedition. The test included
walking for two days along the Great North
Walk from Wollombi to Glenworth Valley –
camping overnight under the Mooney Mooney
Bridge followed by a day of horse riding and
for the final day, kayaking down to the
Hawkesbury River Bridge, exhausted but very
happy with their achievements. The treks were
organised through Glenworth Valley whose
staff commented that they were a “fantastic”
group. Adelaide Welling, Liam Watson,
Tracey Lloyd, Eleanor Russell, Stacey Rose-
Ackroyd, Rebecca Borys and Emme Hoy
fulfilled the goals of the scheme with
distinction.
Uniform – the beginning of the school year is
the best time to ensure that all students have
appropriate uniform. The year has begun very
well for nearly all students and random uniform
checks will begin next week. Shoes should be
black enclosed leather or vinyl (NOT canvas or
sports style except on Wednesdays), school
shorts or pants (including Wednesdays –
board shorts are NOT allowed) and school
shirts (not tee shirts or sleeveless shirts.
Seniors will get a warning but if they are
persistent in not wearing uniform, parents are
contacted before students are sent home to
change.
NSW Performing Arts Unit Ensembles –
each year talented musicians can audition for
state music ensembles. This commitment is in
addition to their participation in school
ensembles and requires a great degree of
travel to Lewisham on a weekly basis.
Students included in the NSW Symphonic
Wind Orchestra are Clare Leckie (Year 7) and
Kate Jackson (Year 8). Those in the
Symphonic Wind Ensemble are James Power
(Year 11), Jessie Deere (Year 10), Shane
Leviton (Year 10) and Babette Auzins (Year
12). As well, James will play with the Jazz
Orchestra and Shane joins the Millenium
Marching Band.
Congratulations to:
Lara Jones (Year 8) and Emily Washer
(Year 9) who were members of the U14
girls medley relay team that won gold at
the NSW State Age 13-18 Yr swimming
championships. Lara swam the backstroke
leg and Emily the butterfly both achieving
personal bests.
Rachel Holland (Year 9) upon her selection
to participate in the NSW CHSSA Girls
Softball State Carnival as part of the
Northern Sydney Region team next week.
Paul Darmanin (Year 11) upon his
selection to represent Australia at the
Youth Sailing World Championships in
Croatia July 7- 16 2011 as part of the
OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian
Youth Sailing Team of 12 sailors from
across Australia.

MSC has a strong cross curricula program which
provides opportunities for students to learn about
their responsibilities as citizens, both locally and
globally. They develop their understanding of
concepts such as collective identity, justice, ethics,
conflict resolution and collective action are
encouraged to use a variety of subject based skills
in advocating for social improvement. The final
goal of the program is to have students participate
in a group action project to effect positive social
change.
In 2011, Year 8 will participate in a two day High
Resolves program on the 3 rd June and 19 th August.
Last year, this program was extremely successful
and thought provoking, especially when students
were challenged to reflect on notions of inequity
through participation in an Oxfam style banquet.
Our students were praised highly by the
presenters for their maturity and engagement as
well as their intelligent, articulate responses. Their
work has even been used as models for other
schools.
Year 9 will now embark on a more adventurous
global leadership program where they will
continue to develop their understanding of
citizenship and justice through an initial program
which focuses on negotiation, decision making and
advocacy skills. They will even have a taste of the
dynamics of international negotiations. Finally, in
groups Year 9 will work with the High Resolves
organization and members of staff to determine,
manage and deliver a project which “makes a
difference.” The journey will begin on the 17 th and
18 th February.
As in 2010, this year 25 Year 10 students will have
an opportunity to act as leaders of Year 8 groups in
the Year 8 High Resolves program as well as attend
the High Resolves Global Summit which is held at a
University in Sydney.
In 2012, the High Resolves program will see
another dimension where selected and interested
students from this year’s Year 9 will participate in a
community action project. More about this as the
year progresses but it will be a fabulous
opportunity for students to really develop efficacy
in engagement with community and global issues.

Festival of Love grips
the hearts of all. Until
Monday 14 th Warm and
Fuzzies and Love Packs
will be available for
purchase in the canteen
area at recess and lunch.
An exciting morning assembly featuring live music
and sugary love will be followed by deliveries
periods 1 and 2 and an exciting festival in “The
Love Hub” over recess. Look out for the enigmatic
Love Cupids (now franchised ‐ there are three)
over the course of the day who will be performing
acapella love song dedications to the recipients of
love packs ($5‐featuring a chocolate, rose and
letter).
Get involved with the exciting activities in the quad
such as free face painting, Smartie guessing
competitions, the “Like a Version” music contest,
Pinata o’Love and of course an atmosphere of
positive emotion.
On Monday the 14 th the SRC will be holding a cake
sale at recess as a Valentine’s Day celebration!
Bring some money to school to buy some “lovecakes”.

Band Auditions
As many of you would know, our
conductors, Mark Brown, Craig
Driscoll and Michael Thrift have been
auditioning Year 7, Year 8, strings and new
students recently. Many band parents stepped up
to assist in the smooth running of the mammoth
exercise. I would like to thank Nir Yaffe, Sibila
Thompson, Kim Healy, Teresa Kwan, Julie
Separovich and of course, Christina de Podolinsky
for their time. It was very much appreciated!
‐ Nicola Elliot ‐ Enrolments and Auditions
Over 190 students have auditioned since term 4,
2010, a HUGE thanks to Nicola Elliot who has
contributed many, many hours to co‐ordinate a
well planned audition schedule as well as enrolling
60 new students to the band program. An
outstanding job!

noticeboard outside the band room (above the
canteen in the music corridor) If you cannot see
your name on the list please speak to your band
director.
New Parents Information Night and
The New Parents Information Night is next
Monday 14 February 8.00pm in the hall.
Band Polo Shirts and 2nd hand blazers will be
available for sale (bring cheque books).
Big Band Bash: The first event for 2011 will be the
Big Band Bash on Monday 7 March, starting at
6.00pm with the Jazz Club in the common room,
(bring a picnic basket) and the main Concert
commencing at 7.00pm in the MSC hall. All
ensembles will be performing.
Please note this is a change of date and venue.
Band communication: Currently the band
committee is in the process of sending emails with
calendars and invoices to all band members. Email
and The Weekly Pines are our primary form of
communication. If people are not receiving emails
from the program, check your junk mail and
contact Christina at mscbands@people.net.au.
2011 Band Fees: Invoices for semester one were
emailed this week. Semester one fees are due on
February 25th. Everyone who pays before this
date receives a $15 deduction in fees. If you do
need longer to pay, please email our Assistant
Treasurer, Jill Deere at jdeere@bigpond.net.au.
Band fees are payable by semester, and the
second semester fees will fall due at the beginning
of Term 3. Your prompt payment will be much
appreciated.

The first Lifeline Northern Beaches Book Fair

The Book Fair is a great opportunity to grab a
supply of children’s books to encourage
reading at home and at a very low cost.
The proceeds from the Book Fairs are directly
invested into Lifeline’s support services to the
Australian community.
This was recently reported in the media:
“Lifeline has seen a 50% increase in calls over the
past weeks from people right across the country,
not just in flood impacted communities. Lifeline
CEO Dr Maggie Jamieson said ‘Our volunteers have
spoken to people about grief, loss, hardship and
pain. We now expect to begin to receive crisis calls
related to the coming cyclone in Queensland,
which will certainly have an emotional impact on
people.’
If you are interested in helping in any way, but
particularly if you would like to help with
costumes, please send in an expression of
interest. We will contact you when we have a
production meeting.

... and speaking of costumes ...
At the working bee last year a band of
wonderful willing parents transformed an old
and ancient room under the TAS block into a
fabulous space for both costume storage and
work room.
BUT it is currently chaos and will need some
effort to bring it to ordered perfection. If you
think you might like to help with this project,
please do let us know. We’ll find a mutually
acceptable time to make a start on this
venture. However it will have to be fairly soon
before the musical making begins.

ART 57
CALLING ALL ARTISTS
Manly Selective Campus is seeking local artists to
contribute to “Art 57”, a unique art sale to raise
money for The Pines building fund; an initiative to
provide funding for “big ticket” items and
improvements around the school. Art 57 will also
be supporting our school Band Program.
What do artists need to do
1. If you are able to contribute to this fundraising
event by completing a canvas, please email us at
mscart57@gmail.com with your name and
contact details and we will send you your canvas
and a set of instructions. Alternatively, if you know
someone who would be happy to contribute, then
please forward this request to them.
Prizes:
$750 – People’s Choice Award.
$500 – Vitesse Painting Award.
$150 – Student Choice Award.

2. Each participant will be given a 25cm
square canvas and asked to complete an
original work around the broad theme of
“North of the Harbour Bridge”. It can be a
sketch or painting, a piece of writing, a
collage, or photographs – anything which can
use the canvas as a base. The fun catch is that
the work will be completely anonymous –
names of artists will be kept secret and
buyers won’t know whose picture they
bought until they turn it over and see the
signature on the back!
3. Canvases need to be returned no later
than May 1 st and will be exhibited and sold at
the school during an evening function on
Friday 20 th May. Previews will be held on
Wednesday 18 th and Thursday 19 th May.
4. “Art 57” will mount an exhibition and sale
of the works at the school hall in May – and
each canvas will be sold for $100, (although a
few paintings sell during the preview for a
premium).
“Art 57” will be promoted through the media, the
school community and the alumni. Teachers,
parents and students are also invited to join in and
contribute canvases.
Newport Artworks has generously agreed to curate
the exhibition again and will act as a major
consultant to the project. The gallery will also be on
hand at the exhibition to provide framing advice
and take orders.
Please join us for this exciting event. Help us to
make “Art 57”a success and provide much needed
funds for our school.
