BOARD
Membership renewals
Around Christmas time, a number of yogis did not
receive their Winter issue of News South East. Whilst
a few newsletters may have been lost in the post, most
of the non-deliveries were due to membership not
being renewed as soon as reminders were issued. The
printers receive a current membership listing when they are due
to mail out each issue of the mag. If your name does not appear
on that listing, you won’t get NSE.
Recently the BWY moved to a rolling membership system,
so it is no longer the case that everyone’s membership runs out
on 31st October. Central Office sends out renewal reminders six
weeks prior, mainly by email (if you do not have email then you
receive a postal reminder). These emails are likely to be diverted
to Spam if you have a high level of protection on your system..
Payment has to be processed before you can be shown as
‘active’ on the database, which can take up to 10 working days.
For all members, lapsed membership means that you will
not receive emailed reminders about forthcoming regional
events, and you will not be recognised by the website as a
BWY member if you try to download a booking form for an
event. For teachers, lapsed membership means lapsed
insurance as well as potentially not receiving the regional
newsletter and Spectrum, so to avoid this, why not set up a direct
debit to ensure that your membership stays ‘active’.
Performing rights legislation for yoga teachers
If you play recorded music in your yoga classes you may still
need a licence – check this out at www.ppluk.com

Getting involved
Working as a volunteer
The BWY is dependent on the involvement of its Regional Committee
members, working as volunteers, to provide a service to its regional
membership. It can be a really rewarding, interesting and enjoyable
experience.
If you are considering becoming a volunteer on your BWY Regional
Committee, this information is designed to give you some idea of what is
involved.
A good committee member:
• will commit to preparing for, and attending, regular meetings;
• will commit to attending the Regional Annual General Meeting;
• will have a good understanding of how the committee works;
• is not afraid to ask questions;
• agrees to stick to the majority decision;
• supports fellow committee members and respects the authority
of the Regional Officer as line manager and team leader;
• acts as an advocate for BWY.
In a good, effective, committee:
• each member will understand their role and responsibilities. For each
elected position on the committee there is an Operating Procedure
explaining these;
• there will be a mix of skills, abilities and experience;
• each member will respect the confidentiality of information to which
they have access, especially regarding members;
• each member will use their committee position only to promote BWY
and not their own or any other business;
• everyone is committed to providing the best service possible to the
region’s membership.
Expenses incurred by volunteers will be reimbursed, such as travel to
attend committee meetings. Your Regional Officer and fellow committee
members will give you more information about how they work together.
EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY IN YOGA
with Helen Smith
Saturday 16th November 2013, 10.00-13.00
Abercorn Room, Painshill Park, Cobham KT11 1AA
This event is FREE for BWY members; please send a £10 postdated
cheque, which will be returned to you on attendance.
Organiser: Sarah Ann Hallett
This half-day workshop has been developed for BWY teachers to
explore equality and diversity in the context of teaching yoga, and
carries 3 CPD points. We will look at:
• What equality and diversity language means and why it is important
• Identifying barriers to participation in yoga amongst certain minority
groups
• How to provide solutions to barriers to participation
• Equality law and its relevance to yoga teachers
• How to challenge inequitable behavior and be more inclusive
As well as enhancing your own knowledge and understanding of these
important issues, there will be the opportunity, via group work and
discussion, for you to share your own knowledge and experience.
CALLING ALL ATTENDEES!
If you have particularly enjoyed a BWY Day, we want to hear
from you. Your Committee is keen to include your experiences of
the events we organise in News South East – and what’s more,
we’re offering you the chance to win £10 off a BWY SE
Region Day if your review is published.
Just send your write-up, full name and contact details to the
Editor at the email address on page 2; submissions by post are
also acceptable, again see page 2. Photographs will also be
accepted as long as these do not disrupt the Day. Reviews
should be between 300 and 500 words long and will be judged
and selected at the Editor’s discretion.
Yoga is a spiritual discipline, one which demands more of
us than just the physical ability to make a shape or posture
such as handstand or crow. The external shape may look
the same but what makes a posture a yoga asana In this
workshop we will be looking at 'spirit' as the bridge that
leads us from posture to asana, yet what is spirit
We will begin by finding out what spirit feels like, looks
like, tastes like to us, we'll then move into simple vinyasa
work where that very spirit helps us through that which
holds us back from falling into perfect inversions or
reaching through liberating arm balances.
This is a day for the beginner and adept practitioner
alike. An opportunity to experience the grace of these
'power-filled' postures. This will be a heart-full workshop
where, just like the very nature of inversions and arm
balances, you will be asked to fearlessly approach the
edge of stability in the quest of embodying grace.
Do you struggle to create different experiences for your
students Are you in need of inspiration in your teaching
This day is designed to explore different ways in which a
peak sequence can be taught with a different focus to
vary students’ experiences, and how stories from yoga
philosophy can be told through asana. It is a follow-on
day from the Creative Teaching IST Day piloted in Kent
in February 2012 but you do not need to have attended
that day to benefit significantly from attending this one.
The morning will focus on experiencing Paul’s ideas
and teaching and the afternoon will centre on group work
designing lesson plans to teach a concept, story or idea
from the Gita, Upanishads or Sutras. By the end of the
day teachers will have new strategies and plans to
introduce concepts, stories and ideas in their lessons and
their efforts will be shared by email afterwards.
Please bring a copy of the yoga sutras, HYP and
Upanishads if possible.
Gary is a well known, highly respected teacher of yoga.
He has lectured extensively on the anatomy of yoga in the
UK, Europe and America. He is the founder of the Natural
Bodies Centre in Brighton, dedicated to the work and
approach of Vanda Scaravelli which was not so much
about executing postures but cultivating the conditions that
allow the body’s natural intelligence to awaken.
This day will give you the opportunity to explore the
nature of the fluid elasticity of the body and the importance
of the support, safety and freedom that elastic recoil can
give us. Practising our yoga in a particular way allows us
to engage with our fascia and myofascial to bring a level
of lightness and buoyancy to our movements, which gives
us an energy-efficient way of moving. This is a day suited
to those who wish to understand the body in great depth
and some posture work will be interspersed through the
day to illustrate the theory and consolidate understanding.
A meditation stool may be useful for the short talks.
Enjoy a series of deeply restorative yoga postures inspired by
BKS Iyengar. We will support the body with props to alternate
between stimulating and relaxing the body to move it towards
balance. These poses are poses of being rather than doing and
are mostly lying down.
Our daily lives put undue pressure on us, which in turn can
cause stress to build up and affect us on a personal level.
Chronic stress can lead to disease and illness in some cases.
Our antidote to stress is relaxation. Rest, not sleep – it is different.
Scientists have researched the effects of relaxation and we have
a relaxation response that lowers our blood pressure, alters our
rate of breathing and we changes our brain patterns. This can
help to reduce stress and restore health.
The day will look at the anatomy of side bending and
rotation and their respective patterns of movement. The
contra-indications of these postures will be considered and
reviewed. The benefits of side bending and rotation will be
explained and we will look at how to develop the postures
in a progressive and logical fashion. The day will be a
mixture of theory interspersed with side bending and
twisting postures.
Peter Blackaby has been a student of yoga for over 30
years and teaching for over 20 years, originally as an
Iyengar teacher. His subsequent studies in osteopathy and
meetings with other yoga teachers led him to change his
direction, pursuing a more bio-mechanically friendly
approach to asana work. Recently this has developed into
a broader ‘humanistic’ perspective, with the intention of
making yoga more accessible to the Western mind by
grounding the physical, physiological, and psychological
effects of yoga practice in a rational context.
Join Beverley on this explorative pranayama journey which
will include mudras and bandhas as well as asana. Make
it easier for your students to understand this relationship
with breath.
Students will acquire or refine their knowledge of the
material anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system,
and three subtle anatomy systems; practise a sequence
of postures suitable for preparing the body for pranayama
practice; deepen their knowledge of the pranic model of
anatomy, specifically the prana vayus and associated
hasta mudras; and understand the relationship between
the prana vayus and the body systems together with
associated common conditions.
Beverley is a practitioner of yoga, movement and
bodywork. She is a registered somatic movement
therapist/educator as well as teacher and assessor for
CamYoga. Beverley considers Judith Hanson Lasater and
Richard Rosen to be significant teaching influences.

Bill will be focusing on the concept that healthy posture is
not held but is more a free and animated way of inhabiting
our bodies, with a loose and comfortable and therefore
strong spine at its core. Theoretically these ideas will be
built around anatomical explanations that emphasise the
dynamic, fluid and free nature of a healthy spinal posture.
These concepts will be held within a balanced
‘workshop-style’ class, where the practice will be
interwoven with explanations, demonstrations and
opportunities in pairs to explore the teaching possibilities
of each suggestion.
These principles will be explained with reference to
‘Scaravelli-inspired’ yoga, to help place the teachings into
with it. This day is not just for teachers but for anyone who
These days, many of our new yoga students are taking up
yoga at the suggestion of a doctor or physiotherapist; we,
as yogis, know that yoga practice can help with many
ailments, but of course, the new student will have little or no
knowledge of the different types of yoga, and which class
would be suitable and beneficial for them. They will simply
turn up at the nearest and most convenient class. Thus we
must assess the student and guide them through the
practice safely, while hopefully giving them something that
will aid their specific condition.
Most of the people in our classes will not have access
course, we cannot give such expertise in the class
