Regional AGM ‘13
This year’s SE Regional AGM and Yoga Day will be held at Oaken Hall, Ditton
Community Centre, Ditton, Aylesford, Kent ME20 6AH, from 10:00 to 16:00 on
5 October 2013. The day is open to all SE Region members.
Yin & Yang Yoga
Our tutor for the AGM workshop this year will be Simon
Low, who has been teaching yoga for over 20 years. He
was the original director and a co-founder of Triyoga, the
UK’s most popular yoga studios. As principal of The Yoga
Academy, Simon now leads yoga teacher trainings,
workshops and holidays internationally throughout the
year. His friendly, focused and fun classes incorporate his
interpretation of Yin and Yang yoga, a practice enriched
with detailed teachings on anatomy, philosophy,
psychology, and Chinese and energy medicine.
Simon will offer us a complete, balanced, led-practice workshop where both Yin
(focusing on lunar, feminine, passive, deep, restorative, meditative practices) and
Yang (focusing on solar, masculine, strengthening, fluid dynamic movement) are
honoured equally. Within the ‘dance’ of these complementary opposites we
discover a more complete, holistic yoga practice.
In the Yang practice, circles, spirals and energy awareness will be infused
alongside attention to precision of alignment, often revisiting classical alignment
with fresh enquiry. Within the Yin practice, the calming ‘restorative’ and gentle
meditative asana will be balanced by deep Taoist yoga-inspired work into the
primary joints of the torso, connective tissue of ligaments and tendons, myofascial
trains and energy meridians. Both sessions will also explore a fresh approach to
core awareness and integrity. With breath and mental focus we cultivate
‘movement within stillness’ and ‘stillness within movement’.
Please bring your yoga mat, bolsters (the more the merrier), foam blocks, strap,
hand towel, blanket(s), a light lunch and a mug for hot drinks. Wear layered clothing
to ensure you do not get cold.
Booking
A deposit cheque for £10 and post-dated 5 October 2013 must be sent, along with
your booking form, to the Regional Secretary (details on page 2) in order to secure
your place. You will collect your cheque on arrival. Non-attenders will have their
cheques cashed. It is not possible to pay by PayPal.
Getting involved
Working as a volunteer
The BWY is dependent on the involvement of its Regional Committee
members, working as volunteers, to provide a service to its regional
membership. It can be a really rewarding, interesting and enjoyable
experience.
If you are considering becoming a volunteer on your BWY Regional
Committee, this information is designed to give you some idea of what is
involved.
A good committee member:
• will commit to preparing for, and attending, regular meetings;
• will commit to attending the Regional Annual General Meeting;
• will have a good understanding of how the committee works;
• is not afraid to ask questions;
• agrees to stick to the majority decision;
• supports fellow committee members and respects the authority
of the Regional Officer as line manager and team leader;
• acts as an advocate for BWY.
In a good, effective, committee:
• each member will understand their role and responsibilities. For each
elected position on the committee there is an Operating Procedure
explaining these;
• there will be a mix of skills, abilities and experience;
• each member will respect the confidentiality of information to which
they have access, especially regarding members;
• each member will use their committee position only to promote BWY
and not their own or any other business;
• everyone is committed to providing the best service possible to the
region’s membership.
Expenses incurred by volunteers will be reimbursed, such as travel to
attend committee meetings. Your Regional Officer and fellow committee
members will give you more information about how they work together.
Congress 2013
A look back at the latest national gathering of BWY members
The 46th annual British Wheel of Yoga’s
National Congress took place from 22 to 24
April – and what a weekend it was.
Readers may remember the sunny
photos and comments on the warm spring
weather shared in previous reviews of
Congress... Well, this year we had the other
extreme as it snowed pretty much constantly
from start to finish!
Luckily, we were treated to plenty of hot
tea during our breaks and a fantastic range
of delicious meals to keep us fuelled up as
we trudged, sloshed and skidded around
Warwick University’s beautiful campus.
Delegates experienced a variety of styles and
types of yoga, from Ashtanga’s primary
series to the creation of mandalas.
PILGRIMAGE
A particular highlight was this year’s guest
speaker, Satish Kumar, editor of Resurgence
Satish Kumar: an inspirational speaker
A snowy dawn walk to a morning class
magazine. Animated, eloquent and
passionate, his sense of humour helped drive
home the principles of his philosophy as well
as being hugely entertaining.
In an extra talk on the Friday evening,
Satish considered the importance of being
truly connected (as opposed to being
plugged in!) for our wellbeing, and led a
meditation on that theme.
The next day, he spoke of his walk for
peace – an 8,000-mile pilgrimage starting
in India that he undertook at the age of 25,
taking no money with him but trusting that
the people he met would offer him the food
and shelter he would need along the way.
The journey included a mission to take
packets of ‘peace tea’ to world leaders in
10 NEWS SOUTH EAST SUMMER 2013

CONGRESS 2013
some of the cities he visited along the way –
Moscow, Paris, London and Washington,
DC, his final destination.
Satish emphasised that we should live
like pilgrims, celebrating whatever comes
our way – rather than behaving like tourists
who tend to find fault with things.
DOWN TO BUSINESS
This year’s national AGM saw a number of
changes to the National Executive
Committee. Tim Lewis was elected Chair,
replacing John Sack; Chrissie Harrison
became Vice Chair in place of Pat Sharpe;
Anthony Grover was re-elected to the post
of Treasurer; and Rosie Wright was named
National In Service Training Officer
(NISTO). However, the post of BWYT
Committee Chair is now vacant.
COMPETITION WINNERS
At last year’s SE Regional AGM, two
members were lucky enough to win free
tickets to Congress 2013.
First-time delegate Laura Blakiston
commented: “Congress this year was an
amazing experience for me. I thoroughly
enjoyed the diverse and fun yoga-packed
weekend. Practising yoga with such variety
in classes was refreshing, and meeting some
lovely like-minded people inspired me to
return to class with excitement.
“And in between the yoga I very much
enjoyed the food that was beautifully cooked
and catered for all. I would definitely return
for another year.”
Our other winner, Megan Sullivan, had
wanted to attend Congress for a few years
but the opportunity had never arisen.
She said: “I came away with inspiration
Getting creative – mandala session
for both my personal practice as well as my
teaching. I was particularly inspired and
uplifted by Andrea Kwiatkowski’s ‘Spiritual
Warrior’ class. A new teacher for me (and
one that I would love to see more of) was
Katrin Heuser. Her teaching was gentle and
precise and gave me a new method for
finding space in my body – lifting up by
breathing down. And of course a yoga
weekend wouldn’t be complete without
enjoying some ‘South London Sanskrit’ with
Bob, Zoe, Be and Hugh – always something
new to learn in lots of safe hands!”
Both Laura and Megan commented on
the inspirational stories shared by Satish
Kumar during the plenary sessions.
n Next year’s BWY Congress will
take place at Warwick University,
from 4 to 6 April 2014.
Yoga: Is It All
About the Asanas
– by Virginia Kempster –
Perhaps it is – particularly in the West and
for the newcomer. However, there does
come a time when, eventually, the real yoga
emerges. A true union when body, mind
and soul become one in stillness.
From time to time, various authors and
teachers emphasise the need to perfect
each pose before advancing to the higher
practices of yoga, such as pranayama and
meditation. I find it difficult to believe that
we are intended to separate the elements
of our practice. After all, we have to
breathe when in asana, we are in asana
when we are practising pranayama
techniques and we must concentrate
throughout, combining posture, breathing
“
There is
something rare and
unique about yoga which
ought not to be
smothered by the weight
of too many rules
“
and concentration to form a whole,
rounded and complete yoga.
Asana is a very powerful practice and
a vital aid in leading us to stillness. By
using the body as a tool to bring the mind
inwards we can eliminate the complexities
which emerge when trying to quieten the
thoughts. Here, on the mat, we begin to
practise intuition. Maybe a moment of
true meditation arises in the midst of
action
DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES
On a yoga retreat for teachers some years
ago, I and my fellow students were drawn
deeper and deeper into a quiet, meditative
state by the subtlety of the practice until,
without effort and without any formal
asana or pranayama instruction as such,
our bodies freely flowed, breathing
rhythmically, into the shapes and forms of
yoga postures. A moment comes when the
pose ‘does itself ’, a fleeting instant of
connection between the mind and body
which we have to allow ourselves to find.
Interestingly, a few years later on a
similar retreat, one of the participating
students became almost angered by the
contemplative style of the practice and
constantly demanded that we ‘get on with
it’. She was unable to ‘understand’ the
12 NEWS SOUTH EAST SUMMER 2013

IS IT ALL ABOUT THE ASANAS
slow quietness. Unless her body was
occupied she felt threatened; she could not
permit herself to be and unless she was
doing she felt extremely uncomfortable;
she was reluctant to wait with patience
and allow her body to respond naturally,
intuitively, in its own time.
When teaching yoga it has to be
remembered how different we are from
one another and how different we are
from one day to the next. We need to be
sensitive to each student and to what they
understand from and in the practice, as
well as what they themselves need to help
their development.
It is a very long road from the basic
nuts and bolts of anatomical instruction
of postures to involved pranayama
techniques and ultimate quietness – and
often the student who most needs slowness
and stillness is the most resistant to it.
Some of us need to travel extremely
slowly if we are ever to arrive.
DILIGENCE
Discipline is a frequently used word in
respect of yoga practice, whether of asana
or meditation, and it can be off-putting!
Perhaps diligence is kinder and more apt.
It implies the attentive care, the steady
effort and the perseverance we use
throughout our practice. If we are
working in yoga with an enquiring mind it
becomes an evolution, a continuous
reawakening of the senses.
This consistent reminding of the mind
to re-enter the body, to watch the
movement of the breath, is a practice for
everyone, at whatever level. The simpler
it becomes, the more advanced the
practice.
No one person can tell you what is
right for you; in the long run it is you and
only you who knows what is right for your
body. There is no one way to approach
yoga, no one way to practise a posture, no
one breathing technique. Question it,
change it, play with it. Follow yourself.
You will never lose the joy of
self-discovery – with or without asana.
There is something rare and unique
about yoga which ought not to be
smothered by the weight of too many
rules.
day that is taking place in another SE county and you are willing to travel, you can attend.
There are two Joy of Yoga Days this year: the first is in Kent in July with Liz Lark
(below) and the second is in Ashington with michele Winter (opposite top). We are also
offering a free half-day workshop on equality and diversity (opposite below).
Please bring along your mat, blanket, blocks and strap, as well as a light lunch. Drinks
JOY OF YOGA DAYS
This is a wonderful opportunity for actively engaging in
clearing away negative energy from ourselves in preparation
for the seasonal festivities. The asana practice is designed
to ‘flow away’ stagnation of our energy pathways and, in
particular, the tension/trigger spots we tend to hold in the
shoulders and lower back. The pranayama work will deepen
this cleansing feeling. We can enjoy the fun of partner work
to create lightness of spirit and round off the day by focusing
through chanting and meditation. This is a truly
comprehensive programme in time for Christmas, to come
away rejuvenated from the adverse effects on our energy
levels from a long term, colder weather and darker days.
Michele was introduced to yoga over 20 years ago and
has taught for the past 10 years. She currently teaches in
Brighton and holds workshops and retreats, and
complements her yoga teaching by incorporating her
knowledge as an injury therapist and clinical pilates teacher.
This half-day workshop has been developed for
BWY teachers to explore equality and diversity in
the context of teaching yoga, and carries 3 CPD
points. We will look at:
• What equality and diversity language means
and why it is important
• Identifying barriers to participation in yoga
amongst certain minority groups
• How to provide solutions to these barriers
• Equality law and its relevance to yoga
teachers
• How to challenge inequitable behaviour and
be more inclusive
As well as enhancing your own knowledge and
understanding of these important issues, there will
be the opportunity, via group work and discussion,
for you to share your own experience.
of the overall message of the Gita. We will then look at some
of the Gita’s core teachings, introducing each topic by
chanting the Sanskrit together to help us experience the
teaching at an energetic level. The topics will be: 1) knowing
the eternal self; 2) working without attachment; 3) the cosmic
mystery; and 4) the path of devotion. There will be time for
The aims of the day are to introduce variations of
to, feel, and observe their bodies in challenging variations;
to introduce asana that is seldom taught; and to teach the
value of moving out of our individual comfort zone. If you
This workshop will aim to introduce an exploratory and more
‘gravity, breath, wave’ approach to emphasise and deepen the
body/breath connection; to illustrate how the above can aid
ultimately, their students; to provide a workshop to investigate
the morning practice working with asana and/or pranayama
chosen by the group as particularly useful or problematic; and
to encourage discussion reflecting on the above, from the
teaching point of view. By working in pairs or groups we will
What is the astanga yoga of Patanjali What are its
components and what is their relevance to teachers and
students in the modern era Most of us have heard of the
Eight Limbs, but how can they help us – and our teaching
This day will aim to give a clearer understanding of these
important concepts.
We will explore the Eight Limbs to see how these
valuable tools can facilitate positive change when used
appropriately and support us in our teaching and our lives.
The key texts used will be The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
and The Yogarahasya of Nathamuni. There will be plenty
of opportunity for practice as well as some lively and
interesting discussions.
Andy is an experienced KHYF yoga teacher, currently
studying for his post-graduate Therapy Teaching
qualification. His style of teaching allows for fun whilst being
relevant and instructional.
This day will be a mix of practice, discussion and looking at
two very relevant yoga texts. Participants will explore some
ancient ideas which are still very useful today for ourselves
and our students; experience short practices and discuss
how they could be incorporated into the scheme of a
general yoga class; and gain some ideas of how to
incorporate the day’s ideas into their lives and teaching.
Gary is committed to teach, train and encourage body
awareness, ease of movement and efficient use, which can
bring about a renewed sense of vitality through daily life.
The aims of this day are to educate and explain the
anatomical workings of kinaesthetic sense; to relate the effect
this has on asanas, pranayama; to look at the relationship of
kinaesthetic sense and movement of body and breath; and to
explain how the kinaesthetic sense works from the surface to
the core of our being and its effect on posture work.
The intended learning outcomes are an anatomical
understanding of the kinaesthetic sense; an understanding of
how this sense interfaces with yoga practices; an experience
of where the body is in space and in relation to gravity; a
deeper sense of kinaesthetic awareness from the core of our
being; and a ‘tuning in’ to the subtleties of posture and
movement with the kinaesthetic sense.
A block to sit on may be appropriate for the short talks
throughout the day.
The focus for this day is how an awareness of the feet and
ankles in yoga postures affects the rest of the body. In the
morning we will look at a skeleton to see the structure of the
bones and shapes of the arches of the feet and then
explore in the asanas how the arches support the rest of
the body. In the afternoon we will look at some of the
muscles of the lower leg and how these connect the feet
and legs to the spine. We will explore this connection in
sitting postures and look at the effect on breathing and the
emotions.
Lesley Charters has been practicing yoga since 2000
and teaching since 2007, when she completed the
Teachers Awareness Programme with the Inner Yoga
Trust. Lesley qualified as a Foundation Course Tutor with
the IYT in 2011 and teaches foundation courses in
Hampshire, focusing on anatomy and how it relates to the
postures. Lesley is also training to teach the IYT Diploma
Teachers Awareness Programme.
