field to this old log<br />

house, nor the elation<br />

<strong>of</strong> discovery when up<br />

under the ro<strong>of</strong> were<br />

found some pewter<br />

A "Cape-Cod" l<strong>an</strong>tern, a tallow c<strong>an</strong>dle in a perforated<br />

tin case<br />

spoons, a powder horn, a dip-wick c<strong>an</strong>dle l<strong>an</strong>tern, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

a great old clock made wholly <strong>of</strong> wood, including the<br />

toothed wheels <strong>of</strong> the gear train.<br />

Surely this was a veritable treasure-house <strong>of</strong> in<br />

terest, <strong>an</strong>d this same boy more th<strong>an</strong> once in later<br />

years has pictured to himself the setting in that hum<br />

ble home, musing on a typical fireside scene <strong>of</strong> that<br />

long ago, as he himself sits by a modern electric<br />

light on the library table.<br />

Remembering so distinctly the old log cabin, it<br />

doesn't take such a vivid imagination to picture the<br />

young mother tracing out the alaphabet with a sharp<br />

stick in the fine wood ashes on the hearth, as her<br />

little chick with <strong>an</strong> elbow on her knee, watched with<br />

sparkling eyes the ch<strong>an</strong>ging tracery<br />

A flax carder<br />

<strong>of</strong> each letter<br />

<strong>an</strong>d figure as he<br />

learned his A B Cs.<br />

And how this<br />

"chick" grew to<br />

m<strong>an</strong>hood, measur<br />

ing his wits <strong>an</strong>d his<br />

brawn against op<br />

posing elements as<br />

he widened his in<br />

fluence in the sur<br />

rounding forest,<br />

noting the addition<br />
