make quite a name for himself,<br />

other horse thereabouts. In hauling out <strong>of</strong> the<br />

woods a wagon heavily loaded with logs he <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

passed so near trees that his bridle would touch,<br />

<strong>an</strong>d yet would keep pulling his utmost under the<br />

direction <strong>of</strong> a driver in whom he had confidence.<br />

But the feat which doubtless got him the greatest<br />

publicity was pumping water. He would take the<br />

pump h<strong>an</strong>dle in his teeth <strong>an</strong>d work it up <strong>an</strong>d down<br />

to pump water for himself when the drinking trough<br />

was empty.<br />

On more th<strong>an</strong> one occasion the attention <strong>of</strong> visit<br />

ing neighbors was called to the horse's pumping<br />

"stunt," <strong>an</strong>d more or less frequently a new pump<br />

h<strong>an</strong>dle had to be provided as the horse's teeth wore<br />

the h<strong>an</strong>dle in two.<br />
