<strong>The</strong> party, scattering soon<br />

after noon, left the boy alone<br />

in this wilderness <strong>of</strong> burnedover<br />

terrain, <strong>an</strong>d being only<br />

<strong>an</strong> amateur "big-game"<br />

hunter, he early turned his<br />

steps toward the descending<br />

sun so as to reach the coast<br />

before the dark should come<br />

down. On his way in he<br />

heard the barking <strong>of</strong> dogs<br />

ahead <strong>of</strong> him. Following<br />

the sound <strong>of</strong> their baying<br />

he came out into a<br />

Cub bear<br />

glade,<br />

in the middle <strong>of</strong> which he saw<br />

a burned-<strong>of</strong>f stump, perhaps twenty feet tall, on the<br />

top <strong>of</strong> which perched a young black bear l<strong>an</strong>guidly<br />

watching the dogs harmlessly yelping below. It was <strong>an</strong><br />

easy shot, but as there was no way to get the meat in<br />

to camp, <strong>an</strong>d having no heart for killing just for the<br />

sake <strong>of</strong> killing, the boy continued his journey, to the<br />

evident disgust <strong>of</strong> the dogs, for their noise soon ceased,<br />

with a few parting remarks to the bear that next time<br />

they treed him he wouldn't get <strong>of</strong>f so easily.<br />

Next morn<br />

ing the tide<br />

was unusually<br />

low, so, rolling<br />

up his trous<br />

ers, the boy<br />

took <strong>an</strong> ax<br />

<strong>an</strong>d cutting<br />

into the s<strong>of</strong>t<br />

s<strong>an</strong>dstone<br />

cliffs below<br />

mid-tide, as he<br />

had been in<br />

structed, he<br />
