Congratulations
Andy Kuhn!!!
Grade 11 student Andy Kuhn was recently
named to the Team Manitoba Canada Summer
Games Soccer Team. Over 70 players, born in 1995
or 1996, tried out for the team. Andy was chosen to
play and is one of only a few of the players born in
1996 to make the squad. Team Toba will compete in
the 2013 games in Sherbrooke Quebec. In
preparation for the games, Andy and his team will
train throughout the fall and winter. Training will
ramp up in the spring as the boys get set to compete
against the best the other provinces have to offer.
Then it will be off to Sherbrooke in summer 2013.
Andy also competed on the provincial soccer team
this past summer. He is an attacking midfielder who
will have roles on the offensive side of play as well as
in defending.
Also making the squad is the son of Murdoch MacKay
teacher Mrs. Anania. Gino Anania, a striker who is a
threat to score goals, will travel with Andy to the
Summer Games.
Congratulations to this Murdoch connection and good
luck in your quest to win a medal next summer!!!
Congratulations...
to Mrs. Shannon Schultz Educational Assistant, on
her recent success as a published author.
Her children’s book titled:
Faith has Freckles and Walter has Wheels. But did you know…
was written and illustrated by Shannon and self-published under
the name Shannon Dee. The staff and students of Murdoch
Mackay wish her all the best in her future publishing endeavours.
We like to draw your attention to a letter from our Superintendent that should have come home with
your child explaining a change to our reporting for this school year. If you did not receive this letter
you will find a copy of it in this newsletter or check our school website.
Also, the date for issuing the first report card using our new student information system has
changed. This directly affects our Parent/Teacher interviews as well so please take note of these
changes shown below and on our school website.
Semester 1 report card - November 23 rd , 2012
Semester 1 Parent/Teacher interviews - November 29 th , 2012
We will keep you informed if we need to change our Semester 2 dates previously published.
We are excited about the school year and our hope is that all of our students challenge themselves
to be the best they can be! Make yourself a great year!
Murdoch MacKay Collegiate 50th Anniversary 2013
Did you know Murdoch MacKay Collegiate will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2013 Lots of great events
are in the planning stages.
At this time, we are searching for families with multiple generations who have attended this school. This means
that not only have you attended Murdoch, but so have one of your parents and one of their parents and maybe
even one of their parents. We are searching for the longest line of generations who have attended that is
unbroken.
If your family, or someone you know is one of our multi-generational families, we would appreciate you contacting
the office so we can get further information from you. Email to: mmci@retsd.mb.ca or phone 958-6460.
CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF EDUCATION IN OUR COMMUNITY
Report Cards for Semester 1 will be issued on November 23rd
and
Parent/Teacher is on November 29th.
October 2012
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are writing to inform you that beginning this school year, River East Transcona
School Division is implementing the new provincial report card. Students in grades 9-12
will be issued a mid-term and a final report card each semester.
Manitoba Education is in the process of creating a brochure for parents that explains
more about the new report card. When the brochure is available, it will be posted on the
Manitoba Education website and we will include a link to it on our divisional and school
websites. If you do not have a computer, printed copies of the brochure will be available
through the school office.
It has been our practice to send an interim report card home in October. This will no
longer happen. In place of a written report, you will be contacted by your son/daughter’s
teacher(s) by the end of October if they feel your child is encountering difficulties. We
also encourage you to contact your son/daughter’s teacher(s) if you have any concerns.
In addition to implementing the new provincial report card, we are transitioning to a more
comprehensive division-based student information system. We are very excited about
the new system and you will be hearing more about it in the months ahead.
At RETSD we believe that effective communication is crucial to ensuring academic
success for our students. As we implement the new provincial report card and our new
student information system, we trust that you as parents and guardians will work with us
for the benefit of our students.
Yours truly,
Kelly Barkman
National Terry Fox School Run/Walk Day
On Thursday September 27 th the Terry Fox National School Run/Walk Day, staff and students of
Murdoch Mackay Collegiate participated in their walk/run while showcasing their Murdoch pride. Staff
and students had the opportunity to wear Terry Fox stickers demonstrating who or ‘what’ (courage,
determination, etc) they may be participating for. The event took place outside in the back field with
music being provided by our Phys. Ed Department. It was followed by a pizza lunch sale organized by a
great group of Grade 9 Volunteers with all proceeds being donated to the Terry Fox Foundation. The
pizza sale ran out of ‘za’ in only 20 minutes! There was also a wonderful cupcake sale put on with
proceeds being donated as well. Overall, the event was very well attended and the staff and students of
Murdoch Mackay did an excellent job raising funds for the Terry Fox Foundation.
Way to go guys!
The Math Minute
body language from Popcorn.
Popcorn is an awesome dog.
We are so excited for him to come
back again this year.
FROM THE ART DEPARTMENT…
Once again we are working on making a float for this years Santa Claus Parade. In order to help raise
funds for our Christmas float, we are also building a smaller float which we will give/sell to the parade
organizers. We hope to have this float done by October 5th. Our Santa Claus Parade float must be
ready for parade day which is Saturday, November 17th.
Our music and art students are once again joining The Winnipeg Symphony for a concert and art
display on Monday, October 29th. Our artwork will be on display throughout the Concert Hall.
This year we have been given the opportunity to display work in local stores and offices. Students from
our school will have work up on display at the Transcona Library and the Transcona Biz Office. Look
for it in early November.
CHARITABLE IDEAS
The Charitable ideas students kicked off the school year with a City of Winnipeg
Take Pride Community clean-up day on Friday, Sept. 21st. We spent most of the
day in the school gardens picking weeds and filling up the schools’ dumpster and C.P.E.T.’s as
well.
Our second clean-up day will be on Friday, October 12th. Let’s hope the weather is good.
Thank you to all of the students who helped out!
Some of our students have volunteered for Boo at the Zoo, which is a fundraiser for Assiniboine
Park Zoo. Our students will be dressed in costumes to entertain and frighten zoo visitors. This
family event runs from October 18 - 28th.
BOO!!
Music Notes
Leaves are falling and frost is seen in the mornings, yet music
students are getting up to play jazz in the mornings, and spending lunchtime
singing. Band students have dusted off their instruments and are quickly
developing their “chops” again. Yes, fall is here, and it is a reflective time of
year, but music students know there is much to look forward to in the
coming year, and they are working hard to get ready.
Auditions for the school musical “The Music Man” are October 9-12,
and there are already people signed up and practicing hard to prepare for
them. It’s a good thing, because the competition for roles is likely to be
fierce. Everyone wants to play hard-eyed Marian the Librarian, or Professor
Harold Hill, the smooth, suave con man who sells band instruments and
uniforms to citizens of River City, Iowa, then tries to split with the money.
Come see the show in April – we’re going to have the best show in the city
again!
Murdoch students are preparing their music and starting to think about
what to bring to Camp Cedarwood for our Choir and Band Retreat,
happening November 12-14. This camp is going to be a great experience for
all the students in music. We will be spending three days with each other in
rehearsals, making music, and working with professional musicians to get
even better at using our instruments and voices. We also get to play
Man-Hunt, watch movies, have camp fires, and eat delicious food together.
Mmm, food…
Of course, what better way to end our fall season than with a concert –
a display of musical prowess gained through hours of diligent practice. Our
Winter Concert will be held December 11 this year. It’s going to be really
something. The Jazz Band has been working on some killer tunes that will
set your feet tapping at the very least, and the Choir has a monster sound
this year… walk by the music room at lunch if you don’t believe it. Last year
the Band played an Ode to Spain – who knows what you might be able to
hear at this concert
And this is just the beginning of the year! Yes, we’re so busy we barely
notice the leaves falling and the nights getting colder. Things are happening
down here in Room 178, and some students just can’t get enough of it.
The month of September has come to an
end, and the Clansmen football team find
themselves sitting close to the top of the
Potter division with a 4-1 record. The
Clansmen have gone to the air this year like no
team in the division has ever done. Led by quarterback
Drenin Busch and a wealth of standout receivers including the
league leading receiver in catches, yards, and touchdowns
Kaanon Felix. Cameron Duplin and Brenden Okaley give Busch
other options when looking for open men down field. Although the
defense struggled to find their way early on in the season, they
have rounded in to form shutting out the opposing offenses in 2 of
their last 3 games. Next action for the Clansmen is Friday,
October 12 th @ 4:30 here at MMCI. It will be your last
chance to see the Clansmen play this year at
Murdoch, and the game will be a battle for
second place in the division.
Come on down and help support your
Clansmen as they continue on their
journey to the Championship game.
Clansmen Volleyball 2012
Some might suggest that as a result of a lack of effort, Murdoch had only girls volleyball teams this
year. It was in fact a lack of male interest that resulted in a female only representation in volleyball
this year. As a result of this there have been some changes of coaching staff, at all levels.
The grade 9 girls team is being led by first year coach and former Clansmen Derek Verbong. Derek had
reasonable success playing for Murdoch over his years here, which led to tryouts with club volleyball
powerhouses 204 and Winman. His knowledge and willingness will be quite an asset to the grade 9
girls as well as the future of the Murdoch volleyball program. Derek will be assisted by teacher
supervisor Ms. Beaudin as the season gets underway.
The Junior Varsity girls are being developed by PE staff member Ms. Tilston-Jones, who coached the
grade 9 boys last year. She brings a very deep pool of experiential knowledge to a group of girls who
will be preparing to make the transition to varsity volleyball next year.
The varsity girls are being coached by former varsity boys coach, Mr. Pieczonka, as well as former
Clansmen standouts, Ryan Quinn and Matt Sawatzky. The varsity girls have been hard at work
preparing for their season since late August and are continuing to show growth in their development as
the weeks roll by.
The JV and Varsity girls play in the KPAC athletic conference and their schedules and results can be
found at www.kpac.ca .
The grade 9 girls are part of the RETSD league and their schedule is located on the Murdoch MacKay
website under “Athletics” – “Documents & Schedules”.
Any questions regarding volleyball can be directed toward Ms. Tilston-Jones or Mr. Pieczonka at
204-958-6460 ext. 2730.
Students Promoting Global Unity (SPGU)
This year, a new student group has been initiated at Murdoch MacKay. In this day of uncertainty
it is reassuring that there are young people whose convictions lead them to hope for the future.
They represent the leaders of tomorrow who will inspire and promote change in the hearts of
humanity. This group will allow students a platform to explore, raise awareness and stimulate
dialogue on the social issues that they deem most critical and relevant.
Our first meetings have identified what it means to have global unity and lasting world peace.
Some ideas about the barriers to peace include: unequal treatment of races, inequality of men
and women, unequal distribution of wealth, lack of universal education and healthcare, lack of
environmental sustainability, lack of tolerance and lack of freedom of personal beliefs or choices.
This list encompasses a wide range of social issues that can be commemorated by
UN International Days (there is at least one observance for every week of the year).
Global unity starts with our personal dealings with one another in our homes and communities.
The SPGU group brainstormed some activities that may be achieved this year. Along with
observing and promoting UN International Days, guest speakers and video documentaries can be
organized for lunch time presentations. They also believe they have a role in the empowerment
of their peers when it comes to being more proactive in voicing their concerns about school
related social issues. Open dialogue forums could be arranged to meet this objective. Another
important goal is for this group to author a Charter of Student Rights through the feedback of the
student body at Murdoch.
The group’s first project is to volunteer and participate in the upcoming event to be held at Chief
Peguis Junior High on Thursday, October 11 th (6pm) commemorating the newest addition to the
UN International Day observances- the International Day of the Girl. By elevating the station of
the girl, we provide the means for humanity to make great strides. For instance, many parts of
the world still do not extend education opportunities to girls. Educated girls eventually become
mothers who are the first educators of the human race.
SPGU is seeking more members, so if you want an outlet for your social conscience please
contact Ms. Watson or Ms. Dudek. We meet Wednesdays at lunch in room 165.
