company stabilized disturbed soils
on a one-mile (1.6-km) section of
pipeline that featured slopes ranging
in steepness from 2:1 to 1:1. After
installing fiber rolls and gravel bag
chevrons to reduce slope length, the
crew hydraulically seeded a native
mixture and then applied a bonded
fiber matrix (BFM).
Because of the steep angles, the
hydroseeding rig could only spray
material about one-fourth of the
way up the slopes. “We couldn’t use
regular high-density hoses to pump
slurry the rest of the way because of
the loss in pressure when connecting
the hose to the hydroseeding unit,”
Jennifer says. “We used a solid wall
pipe system to apply the BFM where
we needed to.”

slopes to control erosion
and sediment after wild fires
had blackened more than 7,000
acres;
• Providing SWPPP inspection and
monitoring services for as many as
six sites at a time for a local school
district;
• Hydroseeding and installing silt
fence, fiber rolls, erosion control
blankets and storm drain inlet
protection for a highway construction
project.

On one construction project, the
company worked with a team of hydrologists
and soils engineers who designed
the dewatering plan to lower
the water table by 15 ft. (4.6m). “The
height of the water table varied by
6 feet (1.8 m) or more over about a
6-acre (2.4-ha) area,” she says. “The
real challenge was dropping the water
table evenly across the project.”
Her crew drilled 23 wells, most
about 22 to 30 ft. (6.7 to 9.1 m) deep.
Then, they set up the pumping system
and water holding tanks with
baffles and screens to retain sediment
in the water that was pumped from
the ground. After letting the sediment
settle, they pumped water off
the top of the tanks and through an
underground pipe system to adjacent
property where it was used to control
dust.
