12 Business News INBRIEF Palletways has taken a minority interest in Lichfield-based X2, a 4PL specialising in flexible distribution and warehousing solutions. X2’s clients include Corporate Express, DHL and TDG. London City Bond, the wine and spirits logistics provider, has opened a bonded warehousing operation at Hillington, near Glasgow airport. The 100,000 square feet warehouse can store nearly half a million cases of wines and spirits that will be delivered just-in-time to Scotland’s major cities. NYK Logistics says that it is planning a number of port-centric import centres following considerable interest in its first UK site at Thamesport. Initially envisaged as a 35,000 sq ft depot, the centre will rise to a total of 120,000 sq ft by September. NYK say that the port vcentric concept will allow it to cut costs by about 10% on certain operations. EXPANSION New Midlands depot opens <strong>UKWA</strong> member Redhead International has expanded its operation with the recent opening of a new depot in Burton-on- Trent. The new depot will meet increased demand for Redhead’s international freight services from customers in the Midlands area, giving companies quicker and easier access to both mainland Europe and Ireland. The facility has a 3,000 pallet capacity and also 1,500sq metres of warehouse space. Redhead’s sales and marketing director Rob Thacker said: “The opening of our new depot in Burton-on-Trent forms part of an ongoing expansion programme and directly reflects the continued growth and success of Redhead International. The new facility will provide customers from the Midlands with access to one of the most respected freight management companies in the industry - one that can handle virtually any request from single pallet to full trailers.’ Redhead has appointed Tim Harris to head up the new operation. Tim has nearly 20 year’s experience working in the freight industry and is an Associate of The Chartered Institute of Freight Forwarders. Commenting on his new appointment, Tim Harris said: ‘I am delighted to have joined such a renowned company as Redhead International. These are exciting times for Redhead and I look forward to making a significant contribution to the company’s success in the Midlands.’ CONTRACT WIN End-to-end solution clinches deal Aerobed – the market leader in quality inflatable beds. – have awarded Bibby a 4 year contract to be based at the company's site in Stoke on Trent. One of the key advantages is the 'end-toend' solution including sea freight which was not part of our initial thinking but was brought to our attention by Bibby and has definitely lowered our costs and lowered the cycle time for getting goods into warehouse" "Previously the business had chosen logistics partners based on what was perceived to be low cost.
