Benchmarking and Energy Audits Benchmarking allows building managers and owners to quantify how much energy is being consumed and to compare the performance of their buildings to similar buildings. From these results, Partner Energy can recommend and begin implementation of achievable and cost effective energy and greenhouse gas reduction goals. Energy Star Partner Energy is an ENERGY STAR partner and when applicable, the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager national energy rating system is used to benchmark your building. Portfolio Manager is an interactive energy management tool that allows the tracking of energy consumption for a building or portfolio of buildings in a secure online environment. The rating system is based on comparing numerous building specific inputs such as square footage, hours of operations, and number of occupants to a national database of similar buildings. The rating output is a uniquely calculated number on a scale of 1 – 100. A rating of 50 indicates that the subject building, from an energy consumption standpoint, performs better than 50% of all similar buildings nationwide, while a rating of 75 indicates that the subject building performs better than 75% of all similar buildings nationwide. Partner Energy illustrates where your subject building fits into the ENERGY STAR ranking benchmarks with a chart pinpointing the current rating with detail descriptions of each benchmarking tier.
The building data required for ENERGY STAR includes 12 months of consecutive utility usage information. Using this data, Partner Energy charts energy consumption across multiple categories. The following charts are two examples that illustrate the sample building’s total energy consumption and total utility costs comparing the results on a per square foot basis to the ENERGY STAR ranking benchmarks and the Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (“CBECS”).Portfolio Manager can help companies set investment priorities, identify under-performing buildings, verify efficiency improvements, and receive EPA recognition for superior energy performance. The national energy rating helps determine if the owner’s building is eligible to apply for the ENERGY STAR label. A building that has a rating of 75 or above becomes eligible and requires certification by an independent Professional Engineer to confirm the rating. Energy Audit The Energy Audit is a hands-on assessment of a building’s energy usage, its energy using equipment, and building conditions that may cause excessive energy consumption. Once a building’s energy consumption is understood, projects that can reduce the energy consumption or Energy Efficiency Measures (“EEMs”) can be identified and recommended. The purpose of the energy audit is to provide information on EEMs that is detailed enough to allow business owners and managers to make implementation decisions based on their current and future business goals. Often times the decision to implement EEMs are based on need, budgets, capital investment return criteria, green branding goals, and sustainability goals.
