THE PROJECT
A class 600 pipeline to supply gas to the onsite
power station at the Telfer Gold-Copper Mine
in north-west Western Australia. The pipeline
passes through one of the hottest environments
in Australia, traversing 100km of flood plains,
including a 600m directional drilling crossing
of the De Grey River before a 300km section
of the Great Sandy Desert to the remote Telfer
site. It has a single compressor station with
one duty and one stand-by compressor, but
will have the capability to expand capacity
through further compression to cater for future
Telfer expansion or connection to other mining
projects.
THE CHALLENGE
The time frame on the Telfer project was
extremely tight, with protracted contract
negotiations having impacted into the
production schedule before OneSteel came
on board. In addition, there was the remote
location of the mine, the extreme heat in
that part of the country and the approaching
wet season.
THE SOLUTION
According to OneSteel National Projects
Manager Pipelines Ross McLauchlan, the
Telfer project required OneSteel to think
outside the box on a number of occasions.
“The time frame was very tight and so as part
of our approach to the project our strategies
included buying hot rolled coil well in advance
of when we actually required it from
BlueScope,”
Mr McLauchlan said.
“In fact we rolled steel coil before we had an
official commitment from McConnell Dowell. This
was a risk to OneSteel but we were committed to
ensuring the project was kept on track.
“It also helped that we’ve reached a level
of commitment from BlueScope where they
know exactly what we are looking for—
and that’s quality coil.”
THE VERDICT
Pipe for the Telfer gas line was delivered to the
site ahead of the initial production schedule,
thanks to OneSteel’s total project solution of lead
time, supply flexibility and project management.
According to Mark Twycross, McConnell Dowell
Director/General Manager Pipeline, OneSteel’s
project experience played a huge part in meeting
tight deadlines.
“The company offered short lead times to
supply over a long distance to reach the actual
project site. They are very, very good at that,”
Mr Twycross said.

that they’ve managed to keep the same team
together for quite some time.

arrangements and very open with us about
what their up and coming schedule demands
were and how we fitted in to all that.
