Overview 

This document summarizes the hardware and software considerations 

when migrating from NCR RealPOS 7452 and 7453 Terminals to the 

new RealPOS 7456 Terminal. 

The RealPOS 7456 is designed to replace the RealPOS 7453, which is 

being discontinued in 2002. Like the 7453, the RealPOS 7456 features a 

compact modular cabinet which is optimized for space-constrained 

environments. 

The RealPOS 7456 does not replace the full-size RealPOS 7452, which 

supports both modular and integrated configurations. For customers 

utilizing a modular configuration, the RealPOS 7456 may provide an 

alternative to the 7452. However, for customers requiring maximum 

expansion capabilities (bays/slots) and an integrated (unified) 

configuration, the RealPOS 7452 should be considered. 

Note: 7452-35xx and 7453-35xx share a common motherboard and are 

referred to as the Series 3500. The 7452-40xx and 7453-40xx share a 

common motherboard and are referred to as the Series 4000.

Migration Considerations Summary 

Outlined below are the key migration issues which need to be 

considered when transitioning from the RealPOS 7452/3 Series 3500 

and 7452/3 Series 4000 to the RealPOS 7456 POS Terminal:

3-2 Chapter 3: Migration Considerations 

New Processors 

The RealPOS 7456 is highly scalable and supports a range of Intel 

Celeron and Pentium III processors, including: 

• 566MHz Intel Celeron (66MHz Front Side Bus) 

• 850MHz Intel Celeron (100MHz Front Side Bus) 

• 1GHz Intel Pentium III (133MHz Front Side Bus) 

Depending on the 7452/3 Model and processor currently utilized, 

performance may be higher on the RealPOS 7456. While application 

modifications are typically not required when upgrading processors, 

customers and software partners should fully test their software 

solution when migrating to the new platform and processor. An 

increase in performance can reveal timing problems in the application 

that were not discovered at slower processor speeds. 

Powered USB / RS-232 - Peripheral Cabling 

The RealPOS 7456 offers the enhanced connectivity required for retail 

with support for legacy RS-232 peripherals as well as the growing list 

of USB peripherals. Like the 7452 and 7453, the RealPOS 7456 provides 

power for both a 24V printer and 12V peripherals such as customer 

displays, electronic payment devices and select scanners. However, in 

some cases, different peripheral cables are required. 

12V RS-232 Peripherals 

The RealPOS 7452 and 7453 utilize Auxiliary Power Ports to power 12V 

RS-232 peripherals. The RealPOS 7456 utilizes Powered RS-232 ports, 

which provide 12V power on pin 9 of the RS-232 port. As a result, 

different cables are utilized for 12V RS-232 peripherals.

Chapter 3: Migration Considerations 3-3 

24V RS-232 Printer 

The RealPOS 7456 utilizes the same RS-232 Printer data cables that are 

used on 7452/3 terminals. However, different power cables are 

utilized to power the printer. The 7452 and 7453 utilize an Auxiliary 

Power Cable (1416-C336-00X0) which plugs into the 24V Aux Power 

Port. The RealPOS 7456 utilizes a 24V Power Cable (1416-C712-00X0) 

which plugs into the 24V Powered USB port. Note: this cable is 

designed to pull power from the 24V Powered USB port but does not 

use USB as the data interface. 

24V USB Printer 

When configuring a USB Printer on the RealPOS 7456, a 24V Powered 

USB Cable (1416-C713-00X0) is utilized which connects to the 24V 

Powered USB port and provides data and power in a single cable. 

USB Keyboard and Mouse 

The RealPOS 7456 supprots both PS/2 and dual port (PS/2 or USB) 

keyboards and mice. A dual port keyboard or mouse can be connected 

to either the PS/2 port or to a USB port using an adapter cable. 

Note: If using the dual port (PS/2 – USB) type of PC keyboard or 

mouse with a USB connector on the RealPOS 7456 with the 

Performance Daughter card (six USB ports with audio), connect the 

dual port keyboard or mouse only to USB Ports C, D or E on the 

terminal. 

No ISA Support – PCI Only 

The RealPOS 7452 and 7453 provide a combination of PCI and ISA 

expansion slots. The RealPOS 7456 features two PCI expansion slots 

(no ISA slots) so legacy ISA adapter cards are not supported.


ISA RS-232 Expansion Cards 

The following ISA RS-232 Expansion Cards released on the RealPOS 

7452 and 7453 are not supported on the RealPOS 7456: 

• 7453-F141/ 7452-K141 ISA 2-Port RS-232 Expansion Card 

• 7453-F144 / 7452-K144 ISA 8-Port RS-232 Expansion Card 

For RS-232 connectivity, the RealPOS 7456 includes four external RS- 

232 ports and one internal RS-232 port (dedicated to the UPS battery) 

as standard features. For customers requiring additional RS-232 

connectivity under Windows 2000 or Windows 98, the following PCIbased 

RS-232 Expansion Cards are available for the RealPOS 7456: 

• 3212-K170 PCI 4-Port RS-232 Expansion Card 

• 3212-K171 PCI 2-Port RS-232 Expansion Card 

Note: The PCI RS-232 Expansion Cards listed above are not 

supported under DOS/TAPS, Windows CE or Linux. For DOS/TAPS 

environments that require additional RS-232 connectivity, the 3030- 

K169 PCI 4-Port RS-232 Expansion Card should be utilized. Contact 

RSD Product Management for information. 

For Windows and Linux environments, customers can also take 

advantage of the Powered USB connectivity available on the RealPOS 

7456. 

Third Party ISA Cards 

In some cases, the customer may be using a legacy third party ISA card 

with the 7452/3. Typically, third party suppliers offer PCI versions of 

an adapter card to maintain compatibility with current PC technology. 

In those instances where a third party supplier does not offer a PCI 

version of the required adapter card, an alternative supplier or solution 

needs to be identified. If required, the Third Party Products and SCER 

processes are available to assist in identifying and qualifying 

alternative solutions.


No CMOS Memory Support 

Operating System Support 

The 7452/3 Series 3500 and Series 4000 include 128KB of CMOS 

memory as a standard feature. Non-volatile CMOS memory is 

typically used in diskless environments to store totals and other 

information, but it can also be used in a configuration including a hard 

disk. For Windows environments, NCR offers an OPOS Hard Totals 

Driver, providing a standard programming interface for totals stored 

in CMOS memory. For DOS environments, a TAPS Hard Totals driver 

is also available for the 7452/3. 

The RealPOS 7456 does not support CMOS memory. However, if 

required, the RealPOS 7456 can be configured with 64MB of nonvolatile 

Compact Flash Memory. Compact Flash utilizes an IDE 

interface and appears to the system as a fixed storage device (e.g., drive 

D). 

Compact Flash Memory can be configured with or without a hard disk 

and can be used as an alternative to CMOS memory providing nonvolatile 

storage of hard totals and other information such as logs and 

tallies. In addition, for small footprint operating system environments 

that do not require a hard disk (e.g., DOS, Windows CE, and Linux), 

Compact Flash can be treated as a boot device and can be used as the 

primary local storage device for the POS client. 

Platform Software support for Compact Flash Memory 

To facilitate the migration of Windows applications that are using 

CMOS memory to the RealPOS 7456, the OPOS Hard Totals Driver 

supports both Compact Flash Memory and a Hard Disk Drive. 

The current DOS (TAPS) Hard Totals Driver does not support Compact 

Flash Memory. If required, this can be requested using the SCER 

process. Please contact RSD Product Management for information.

Video Support 

The RealPOS 7456 motherboard includes an integrated video controller 

which provides on-board support for either an analog CRT/LCD (at 

various screen resolutions) utilizing a VGA (RGB) connector or a DVIbased 

LCD display utilizing an industry standard DVI-I (Digital Visual 

Interface) connector. Both video interfaces cannot be used at the same 

time. The –I designation indicates the DVI-I interface supports Digital 

and Analog video. 

NCR’s next generation LCD displays, such as the 5964 Touch Screen, 

include a DVI interface compatible with the RealPOS 7456 DVI-I 

connector. For legacy NCR LCD Displays which do not include a DVI 

interface, the appropriate PCI LCD Video Card must be ordered and 

installed in the terminal: 

• 5982 5" Mono VGA LCD Display – requires the 5952-K052 PCI 

VGA LCD Video Card 

• 5953 12.1" Color SVGA DynaKey – requires the 5953-K152 PCI

NCR’s new 5942-2100 12.1” Color LCD includes an analog interface 

compatible with the on-board analog VGA connector on the RealPOS 

7456. A PCI Video card is not required when the 5942-2100 is the only 

full screen display configured on the RealPOS 7456. 

Note: A new version of the 5953 12.1” DynaKey is planned for 

RealPOS 7456 Release 1.1 (Q3, 2002). This new DynaKey model 

includes a USB Keyboard / MSR interface and a DVI Video interface 

compatible with the on-board DVI-I connector on the RealPOS 7456. A 

PCI Video card is not required for the new DVI-based DynaKey which 

is powered by the 12V Powered port.


Dual Display (Multi-Monitor) Support 

Dual full screen display configurations are supported on the RealPOS 

7456 using the hardware configurations and operating system 

environments outlined below. 

Dual Display Hardware Support 

The table below summarizes the dual display hardware configurations 

supported in Release 1.0 of the RealPOS 7456 and planned for RealPOS 

7456 Release 1.1 (Q3, 2002). Note: when configuring two full screen

For the 7452/3 Series 3500 and Series 4000, NCR has developed special 

CID drivers to support dual display configurations for a variety of 

operating system environments including DOS and Windows. 

On the RealPOS 7456, dual display support is provided using the 

standard multi-monitor capabilities built into the operating system. 

This simplifies the configuration and implementation of dual display 

environments. As outlined above, DOS does not support multimonitor 

capabilities so dual display configurations are not supported 

on the RealPOS 7456 under DOS. Dual display support under 

Windows CE or Windows NT is available by special request using the 

SCER process.


BIOS Setup When One of Two Displays Uses the 5953-K152 

(C&T 69000) PCI SVGA Video Adapter 

The RealPOS 7456 BIOS has a setting to force it to designate what is the 

"Default Primary Video Adapter." It can be set to either AGP (through 

the motherboard's DVI-I or VGA connectors) or PCI (through a PCI 

video adapter card). By default, the BIOS setting is set to PCI. With 

the setting set to PCI, if the BIOS does not detect a PCI video adapter 

card, it changes to look for the primary display on AGP. There is no 

need to change this setting to AGP unless you want to force it to use 

the AGP as the primary display when there is a PCI video adapter card 

present. 

There is a restriction requiring the use of this setting when two 

displays are used and one of the displays uses the 5953-K152 PCI 

SVGA LCD Card (with the C&T 69000 video controller), which is used 

to control the 5935-3X00 DynaKey. In a multi-monitor configuration 

(two full screen displays) using the current 5953-3X00 DynaKey, the 

5952-K152 PCI SVGA LCD Card cannot be defined as the primary 

display. The customer information display (CID) connected to the 

motherboard needs to be defined as the primary display in the BIOS by 

changing the Default Primary Display Adapter setting to AGP (not 

PCI). 

This restriction only applies to the PCI SVGA LCD Card with C&T 

69000 video controller, and only if there are 2 displays used. For other 

cards that were tested, either AGP or PCI could be set as the primary 

display, so no action is required. 

When configuring the current 5953-3X00 DynaKey (with 5952-K152 

PCI SVGA LCD Card) as the only full screen display on the RealPOS 

7456, the DynaKey and its PCI SVGA LCD Card should be defined as 

the default primary display adapter. No action is necessary since PCI 

is the default setting. 

To view or change this setting, start the Phoenix BIOS Setup Utility by 

pressing F2 at startup. Press the right-arrow-key to display the 

"Advanced" menu. Press the down-arrow-key to highlight the 

"Advanced Chipset Control" sub-menu. Arrow-down to the "Default 

Primary Video Adapter."


Dump Switch Support 

Base Platform Drivers 

The 7452/3 Series 3500 and Series 4000 include a Dump Switch which 

can be used for DOS and NT environments. The RealPOS 7456 

includes a Reset / Dump Switch which is located behind the keylockprotected 

media access door. A BIOS setting permits the user to enable 

either the “reset “ mode or “dump” mode. In RealPOS 7456 Release 

1.0 only the “reset” function is supported. In RealPOS 7456 Release 1.1 

(Q3, 2002), a BIOS upgrade will be available to enable the “dump” 

functionality for Windows 2000 environments. There is no physical 

change needed to support the switch, so the new BIOS could be loaded 

in the Release 1.0 RealPOS 7456 terminal to enable this function. Dump 

Switch support for other operating system environments is available 

by special request using the SCER process. 

When migrating to RealPOS 7456, the base platform drivers such as 

LAN and Video must be updated. 

Ethernet LAN 

The RealPOS 7456 onboard Ethernet controller is a National 

Semiconductor DP83815. The drivers for this new Ethernet controller 

are preloaded with all O/S Recovery and Gold Drive images. LAN 

drivers are also available by ordering LPIN D370-1111-0100 Base Client 

and 3rd Party Drivers (Release 3.06 or higher). 

Video Driver Compatibility 

The CRT or LCD display configurations running under the DOS 

Operating System typically use the standard video modes available 

with DOS. Therefore, a new RealPOS 7456 Video Driver is not 

required for DOS.


Windows Operating Systems include standard VGA and SVGA video 

drivers that provide support for color depths of monochrome or 16 

colors. For resolutions greater than SVGA or color depths greater than 

16 colors, a RealPOS 7456 Video driver is required. The video drivers 

are preloaded with all Windows OS Recovery and Gold Drive images. 

Video drivers are also available by ordering LPIN D370-1111-0100 Base 

Client and 3rd Party Drivers (Release 3.06 or higher). These video 

drivers are required to drive NCR's CRT and LCD displays at their 

maximum resolution and color depth. 

Retail Platform for Windows (OPOS / JavaPOS) Support 

NCR OPOS and JavaPOS are supported on the RealPOS 7456. Retail 

Platform Software for Windows (LPIN: D370-0548-0100) provides the POS 

Client software necessary for a RealPOS 7456 Windows 2000 client. 

This software product is distributed on CD ROM and includes: 

• NCR OPOS Release 2.02.00 (or higher) 

• NCR JavaPOS Release 2.00.04 (or higher) 

• NCR FitClient Manager LE Release 3.00.00 (or higher)

NCR OPOS Support of USB 

NCR OPOS supports the USB keyboard and its peripherals through 

drivers written to the USB HID (Human Interface Device) standard. 

The USB printers and USB scanners, however, must be accessed 

through software that makes it look as though the USB data is coming 

through a serial RS-232 interface. The NCR OPOS Service Objects can 

then communicate through what looks like the serial port.


This conversion is provided through the use of the Inside Out 

Networks Edgeport software. This software is available in the 

IONETWORKS directory of the Base Client and 3rd Party Drivers - LPIN 

D370-1111-0100. This is not a new requirement for the RealPOS 7456, 

but is a restriction that developers should be aware of, considering the 

abundance of USB ports that are now available. 

74XX Retail Platform for DOS (TAPS) Support 

NCR TAPS is supported on the RealPOS 7456 for DOS environments. 

74XX Retail Platform Software for DOS (LPIN: G370-0824-0000) includes 

the TAPS Platform Software (Release 5.0.0 or higher) for the RealPOS 

7456 Terminal. This software is distributed on flex disk. 

Gold Disk Migration Requirements 

BIOS Compatibility 

An operating system image that was installed and configured for the 

7452/3 platform does not operate correctly on the RealPOS 7456. 

When migrating to the RealPOS 7456, there are many gold drive 

changes that must be considered. It is recommended that the 

organization responsible for system integration permit for extra 

integration testing to validate the Gold Disk/Load Image with their 

application software. The OS must be upgraded using the RealPOS 

7456 OS Recovery Image. For DOS, once the OS recovery upgrade has 

taken place, it is up to the system integrator to install the base system 

and third party drivers found on LPIN D370-1111-0100. The DOS LAN 

driver must be installed from the third party drivers LPIN to enable the 

network functionality under DOS. 

The RealPOS 7456 motherboard includes a new flash BIOS to support 

the new hardware platform. The new BIOS is not backward 

compatible with the 7452/3 terminals. The flash BIOS is available on 

LPIN A370-0022-0100 74XX BIOS and BIOS Update Software.


BIOS updates can be performed from the bootable CD included in the 

LPIN or from the Fit Client Manager Server. On the RealPOS 7456, this 

is done from either the integrated IDE CD-ROM Drive (7456-K141) or 

the external CD-ROM Drive (2336-K024) with parallel interface.
