‘ On behalf of everyone at Save the Children, I’d like to thank each and every one of you for signing up to this year’s Be a Gunner. Be a Runner.’ Despite being less than nine months into our partnership with Arsenal, we have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity that staff and supporters have shown to date. It’s fantastic to see so many people, young and old, supporting us again in this event, which promises to be another memorable occasion in our fledgling partnership. By taking part in this wonderful event, you will be helping us to make a real difference to the lives of many young people both here in the UK and overseas through a number of education projects. Your £15 entry fee alone could help to pay for the provision of a new school blackboard in some of the poorest parts of the world, while £150, which many of you have raised through sponsorship, could buy a child in the UK a new bed, helping them to get a good night’s sleep and enabling them to fulfill their potential at school. I’d also like to take the opportunity to thank those individuals and groups who will be supporting the event by taking part in their own 6.4km runs away from Emirates Stadium. From Iceland to Indonesia and Nigeria to Namibia, it’s amazing to think that people all over the world will be joining forces and coming together in support of our partnership today! In October, the Arsenal first-team squad received a presentation about Save the Children’s work both in the UK and overseas. Speaking about the presentation, captain Robin van Persie said: “All the players were really touched by the stories they told us, and when you hear how hard some of these kids have it, it makes it real, and it makes us realise how lucky we are. When you get home after a meeting like that, you are even more appreciative of your own situation” THE PARTNERSHIP TO DATE Arsenal Football Club’s global charity partnership with Save the Children was officially launched back in July 2011, when Save the Children’s ‘Global Children’s Panel’ - a group of young ambassadors from all corners of the globe that act as spokespersons for the charity’s work - were treated to a private tour of Emirates Stadium during a special visit to the UK in which they outlined their hopes and aspirations for the partnership. Over the course of the Emirates Cup weekend later that month, a number of activities took place to introduce the partnership to supporters, with one of the many youngsters supported by Save the Children’s Families and Schools Together (FAST) programme, Nor-Ann, of delivering the match ball to the referee ahead of Arsenal’s game with the New York Red Bulls. FAST is one of two education projects in the UK that the Club will be supporting during the partnership, aiming to help increase parents’ engagement in their children’s education by encouraging them to perform everyday tasks and develop their skills together. Ahead of the Club’s dedicated matchday for the charity in November 2011, two players, Johan Djourou and Andre Santos, got involved in a special FAST session for local youngsters at Emirates Stadium, enjoying a range of fun and interactive activities with children and parents. On the matchday itself, players donated a day’s wages along with many Arsenal staff to help raise funds for the charity, while a host of other fundraising initiatives took place in and around Emirates Stadium, giving supporters the chance to contribute to the partnership. Volunteers were out in force and they were joined pre-match by Carl Jenkinson and Jack Wilshere, who both did their bit by bucket collecting and selling raffle tickets outside on the podium. Elsewhere, Gunnersaurus led a half-time pitch collection and 50 pence from every matchday programme sold was donated to Save the Children, while co-branded charity sportsbands, as modelled by the Arsenal players, were on sale across Club retail outlets. Thanks to the generosity of players, staff and supporters Arsenal Football Club has already raised enough money to fund the creation of two brand new FAST projects along with the development of an international programme to be announced later this year. Today’s event is another pivotal moment in our partnership which thanks to you and your fellow runners, will enable the Club to give more young people the chance of a better start in life and the opportunity to grow and fulfil their potential.
