Save the Children registered charity England & Wales (213890) Scotland (sco39570)
‘ On behalf of everyone at Save the Children, I’d like to
thank each and every one of you for signing up
to this year’s Be a Gunner. Be a Runner.’
Despite being less than nine months into our partnership with Arsenal, we have been overwhelmed by the support
and generosity that staff and supporters have shown to date. It’s fantastic to see so many people, young and old,
supporting us again in this event, which promises to be another memorable occasion in our fledgling partnership.
By taking part in this wonderful event, you will be helping us to make a real difference to the lives of many young
people both here in the UK and overseas through a number of education projects. Your £15 entry fee alone could
help to pay for the provision of a new school blackboard in some of the poorest parts of the world, while £150, which
many of you have raised through sponsorship, could buy a child in the UK a new bed, helping them to get a good
night’s sleep and enabling them to fulfill their potential at school.
I’d also like to take the opportunity to thank those individuals and groups who will be supporting the event by
taking part in their own 6.4km runs away from Emirates Stadium. From Iceland to Indonesia and Nigeria to Namibia,
it’s amazing to think that people all over the world will be joining forces and coming together in support of our
partnership today!
From all of us at Save the Children, we hope you enjoy the run and thank you again for your support!
Justin Forsyth
Chief Executive, Save the Children
In October, the Arsenal first-team squad
received a presentation about Save the
Children’s work both in the UK and overseas.
Speaking about the presentation, captain
Robin van Persie said:
“All the players were really touched by the
stories they told us, and when you hear how
hard some of these kids have it, it makes it
real, and it makes us realise how lucky we
are. When you get home after a meeting like
that, you are even more appreciative of your
own situation”
THE PARTNERSHIP TO DATE
Arsenal Football Club’s global charity partnership with Save the Children was officially launched back in July 2011, when
Save the Children’s ‘Global Children’s Panel’ - a group of young ambassadors from all corners of the globe that act as
spokespersons for the charity’s work - were treated to a private tour of Emirates Stadium during a special visit to the UK in
which they outlined their hopes and aspirations for the partnership.
Over the course of the Emirates Cup weekend later that month, a number of activities took place to introduce the
partnership to supporters, with one of the many youngsters supported by Save the Children’s Families and Schools
Together (FAST) programme, Nor-Ann, of delivering the match ball to the referee ahead of Arsenal’s
game with the New York Red Bulls.
FAST is one of two education projects in the UK that the Club will be supporting during the
partnership, aiming to help increase parents’ engagement in their children’s education by
encouraging them to perform everyday tasks and develop their skills together. Ahead of the
Club’s dedicated matchday for the charity in November 2011, two players, Johan Djourou and
Andre Santos, got involved in a special FAST session for local youngsters at Emirates Stadium,
enjoying a range of fun and interactive activities with children and parents.
On the matchday itself, players donated a day’s wages along with many Arsenal staff to help raise funds for the charity,
while a host of other fundraising initiatives took place in and around Emirates Stadium, giving supporters the chance to
contribute to the partnership. Volunteers were out in force and they were joined pre-match by Carl Jenkinson and Jack
Wilshere, who both did their bit by bucket collecting and selling raffle tickets outside on the podium.
Elsewhere, Gunnersaurus led a half-time pitch collection and 50 pence from every matchday programme sold was donated
to Save the Children, while co-branded charity sportsbands, as modelled by the Arsenal players, were on sale across Club
retail outlets.
Thanks to the generosity of players, staff and supporters Arsenal Football Club has already raised enough money to fund the
creation of two brand new FAST projects along with the development of an international programme to be announced later
this year. Today’s event is another pivotal moment in our partnership which thanks to you and your fellow runners, will enable
the Club to give more young people the chance of a better start in life and the opportunity to grow and fulfil their potential.

the registration desks in Race HQ to collect their special bib and running number. Please note that bibs and race
numbers WILL NOT be distributed in advance of race day and must be collected on the day.
RACE PREPARATION
A few things to remember for your run…
1 Eat lots of carbohydrates (sugars, oats, nuts, brown rice, brown pasta, potato) between now and Saturday.
Carbohydrates are a great source of energy and the more you have in your blood and muscles the longer you’ll have
before muscle fatigue kicks-in.
2 Don’t have a late night on Friday - no matter how good an idea it may seem at the time, it will come back to bite
you come Saturday morning!
3 Prepare your kit the night before! You should have received an official Save the Children t-shirt within your race
pack so don’t forget to wear this on the day and pin your unique running number to the front. You will also have a
wristband with 10 tabs to wear on the day – remove one of these tabs every time you complete a lap of the stadium!
4 Warm-up. Get to the stadium in good time for the race warm-up at 12noon and let the experts put you through your
paces. This will also reduce your risk of injury.
5 Pace yourself! Although there will be a prize for the fastest male and female to complete the ten laps, not everyone
is a budding Theo Walcott! If you’ve been training properly in advance of race day, you should have found a pace that
suits you, so stick to it and remember it’s the taking part that counts!
6 Bring something dry that you can change into once you’ve completed your run. Your body cools down rapidly after
exercise so a jumper or warm jacket will prevent you from feeling the chill! There will be a bag drop truck on site on
the day where you can leave any personal belongings.
7 Bring your friends and family! There will be plenty of room on the day for spectators so ask a few familiar faces to
come down and cheer you on – it really can make all the difference!
And most of all… have fun!
ON THE DAY
As well as the run, there will be plenty happening on the day to keep you entertained!
1 Professionally developed warm-up session at 11.00am (Children’s Race) and 12noon (Adult Race) with celebrity
personal trainer, Stuart Amory. Watch out for Club mascot Gunnersaurus who will be taking part in the children’s
warm up!
2 Shoot Systems Photography – grab your own taste of glory and celebrate with the Arsenal players by having your
picture taken against the special ‘green screen’ backdrop.
3 Nigel Mitchell, DJ and voice of Arsenal’s international magazine programme, Arsenal World, will be getting you into
the running mood pre-race by playing a selection of adrenaline pumping tunes and keeping you up-to-speed on
everything you need to know about race day!
4 Fancy yourself as the next Van Persie? Test your penalty-taking skills with this fun game, hosted by Arsenal in
the Community.
5 All runners will be eligible for an exclusive 10% discount on Club merchandise in the Armoury and Arsenal Highbury
House stores on race day. Simply show your race medal at the till to take advantage of this offer.
6 Enjoy one of the Club’s all-new stadium tours with a 20% discount for all race participants until 4pm on race day.
Narrated by Club legend Bob Wilson, the tour takes in all of the must-see areas of Emirates Stadium. All visitors are
given an audio-visual handset on arrival packed with additional information and featuring exclusive interviews with
manager Arsène Wenger and players including captain Robin van Persie, Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere. Show your
race medal at the Media & Stadium Tours Entrance to receive your special discount.
7 Cheer on the Gunners! – Wind down in Royal Oak post-race with our special live screening of Arsenal’s Premier
League fixture away at Queens Park Rangers. Arsenal members can book in advance by visiting www.arsenal.com/
membership or tickets can be purchased on the day from the Drayton Park Box Office.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Please try not to but if you need one, Race HQ will be able to issue you with a replacement.
What do I do if I feel unwell?
Stop running immediately! Find a marshal or head straight to the First Aid point.
Don’t worry. You have until three weeks after the race to get those last-minute sponsors in and complete your fundraising.
What should I do if I can’t make the race?
Please let us know as soon as possible! This will help us plan effectively for the race and if given enough time, we may be
