My First Symposium

Last summer I went to my first Door County
Sea Kayak Symposium. I am 13 years old and
I participated in the teenager program. The
classes were really fun, combining a good time
with basic strokes and rescues. The first day
there were some strong winds, which were fun
but hard to paddle against. The instructors were
really cool and always had fun games for us to
play. Plus I made a few really good friends.
In one of our classes we practiced rescues
and wet exits. I was really scared because once
I am upside down it’s like my brain goes into
a state of panic. But my instructor was really
calm and with his help I finally got it. It felt
good knowing I could do something that once
scared me that much. I also did one naturalist
tour of Kangaroo Lake. The tour was amazing
and so beautiful. There were lots of reeds and
we spotted a few colorful birds and many kinds
of insects.
One of my favorite parts was just gathering
under the tent each evening for dinner. It was
like a really big family getting together to eat.
The food was always different and tasted good.
It was fun to sit around and listen to people tell
stories about their day. The whole symposium
was filled with excitement and adventure. I’m
extremely excited to come again. I think 2010
will be the best year ever!
