A round of Mo’s peanut butter cup
s’mores cooked on the fire topped off
our meal. Once again we sat around
the fire telling tales, laughing at jokes
and together enjoying the calm that
comes with being disconnected from
our regular lives. As the fire died
down, and the last of us headed to the
cabins and the warmth of our sleeping
bags, I was left with the feeling of
being surrounded by friends. Or better
yet, my “Baga family.”
The last person to join the group
was Darren, who we met early
Wednesday morning on the banks
of the Lower Kickapoo River. After
running the shuttle and putting in,
the clouds began to lift and we began
an amazing day on the water. Clear
skies, temperatures approaching the
high sixties and beautiful surroundings
filled the day. The Kickapoo offered
us the flexibility of paddling at our
own pace, taking the time to drift
between canoes and catch up on a
more personal level. And in Jeff’s
case, it gave him a chance to lie back
while I controlled the canoe from
the bow. By the time we took out in
Wauzeka you could see the genuine
happiness in everyone’s smiles due
to such an enjoyable day. We headed
back to Madison, and those of us that
weren’t driving got to squeeze in a
bumpy nap in the back seat of the car.
Back in town we had a closing dinner
at the Brass Ring, giving spouses,
partners, and a couple other coworkers
the chance to spend more time with
the group.
The two and a half days at
Wyalusing were irreplaceable. It has
been so long since I have been able to
devote a couple of days to something
I love. I feel so lucky that Rutabaga
allows me to spend time in a canoe
surrounded by people just like me.
What a great type of family in which
to be involved. It’s so comforting to
know that a paddling buddy is always
close by.
