<strong>Compensation</strong><br />

General Pay Information<br />

Certain deductions will be made in accordance with federal <strong>and</strong> state laws.<br />

Pay Schedule<br />

For 2012 you will receive a $1000 monthly stipend (starting stipend) plus housing which<br />

includes utilities <strong>and</strong> basic phone service. Long distance service <strong>and</strong> internet are not included.<br />

All staff will be paid twice a month on the15th <strong>and</strong> the end of the month. You can<br />

choose to have your paycheck direct deposited or receive a check. If the regular payday<br />

falls on a holiday or weekend, payday will be the last regular workday before the holiday<br />

or weekend.<br />

<strong>Staff</strong> Benefits<br />

Worker's <strong>Compensation</strong><br />

Roxbury Farm provides worker's comp. insurance to compensate for any illness or injury<br />

staff might suffer while working on farm premises.<br />

Personal Days<br />

If you are sick you do not need to come to work. If you need time off please talk with<br />

Jean-Paul <strong>and</strong> Jody in advance <strong>and</strong> we will do our best to accommodate your needs.<br />

Holidays<br />

A total of 2 paid days off plus three afternoons:<br />

Memorial Day: afternoon off<br />

July 4th: afternoon off<br />

Labor Day: afternoon off<br />

Thanksgiving: Thursday <strong>and</strong> Friday off<br />

Farm Food<br />

<strong>Staff</strong> is welcome to all produce from the farm including produce for putting up for the<br />

winter. If you wish to purchase farm meat products we will take 25% off of the price we<br />

charge to the membership. Please place an order with Jody.<br />

<strong>Housing</strong><br />

Your mailing address is -----, Kinderhook, NY 12106. Your phone number -------<br />

We rent the farm cottage from the National Park Service. We are responsible for the<br />

upkeep <strong>and</strong> cleanliness of the house <strong>and</strong> surrounding yard. NPS staff will occasionally<br />

visit the house. We will do our best to let you know ahead of time.<br />

Utilities<br />

Local phone, propane, <strong>and</strong> electricity are included in the housing compensation. If<br />

you wish to have long distance service, cable television, or internet access you will be<br />

responsible for those costs.<br />

Garbage can be brought to the farm dumpster. Recycling can be taken to the transfer<br />

station at no cost.


L<strong>and</strong>scaping<br />

You are responsible for the l<strong>and</strong>scaping directly around the farm cottage. Grass needs<br />

to be kept short <strong>and</strong> weeds should be pulled. Please do not dig any further garden<br />

beds.<br />

Pets<br />

Pets are not allowed in the farm cottage.<br />

Smoking<br />

Smoking is not allowed inside any farm buildings, housing, or vehicles. Illegal drugs are<br />

not allowed on any farm property <strong>and</strong> possession can result in immediate dismissal.<br />

Repairs <strong>and</strong> Maintenance<br />

You are responsible for any damages to the farm cottage if the damage is a result of<br />

abuse or neglect. The farm will take care the of maintenance costs relating to structural<br />

repairs. We ask that you let Jean-Paul or Jody know as soon as possible if there is a<br />

problem in the farm cottage.<br />

You are responsible for keeping the farm cottage <strong>and</strong> its close outside surroundings<br />

clean <strong>and</strong> in good condition. Please create a cleaning schedule with your housemates<br />

to ensure the house is kept neat <strong>and</strong> clean.<br />

Do not use nails, push pins, or anything else that will make holes in the walls in the<br />

bedrooms or bathroom to hang things on the walls.<br />

Presently there are light bulbs, cleaning supplies, <strong>and</strong> toilet paper in the house. You are<br />

responsible for replacing them when they run out.<br />

If you would like to make additions or changes to the farm cottage please review the<br />

changes with Jean-Paul or Jody before you make them.<br />

Length of <strong>Housing</strong> <strong>Agreement</strong><br />

The farm cottage can only be lived in by farm workers or apprentices. Upon deciding<br />

you no longer wish to work for Roxbury Farm we will give you a grace period to find new<br />

housing.<br />

When you move out we expect that the farm cottage will be clean <strong>and</strong> in move in<br />

condition for the next farm workers or apprentices. This includes taking everything<br />

with you that belongs to you. Please do not leave any of your possessions in the farm<br />

cottage when you move out. Do not use the farm cottage as a storage facility.<br />

If you are injured while working on the farm you will be able to live in the farm cottage<br />

until you recover or decide to move on.<br />

Rent <strong>and</strong> utilities will be charged <strong>and</strong> are subject to change <strong>and</strong> they could be based on<br />

market value if you decide to occupy it as a non-farm employee.<br />

Other Restrictions<br />

Because we rent the l<strong>and</strong> from Equity Trust, Inc. <strong>and</strong> the National Park Service we are<br />

required to restrict the following:


Vehicles that are not used on a regular basis cannot be stored on the property. Offroad<br />

vehicles are not permitted on the property unless used strictly for farm work.<br />

There is no target shooting allowed on the property.<br />

Other <strong>Employment</strong> Policies<br />

Work Hours<br />

Spring Work Week (Apr. – May) 8:00 to 5:00 with 1 hour lunch<br />

Summer<br />

(June 1- Sept.) 6:00 to<br />

5:00 with 1 hour breakfast <strong>and</strong> 1 hour lunch<br />

Plus Saturday mornings <strong>and</strong> some Sunday mornings for squash harvest <strong>and</strong><br />

irrigation<br />

Fall<br />

(Oct. – Nov.) 8:00 to 5:00 with 1 hour lunch<br />

We will do our best to keep to this work schedule but there will be times when we may need<br />

to work longer in order to finish a task.<br />

Personnel Procedures<br />

Everyone is strongly encouraged to discuss job performance <strong>and</strong> goals informally any time<br />

but we ask you to keep it out of the workplace. Please bring concerns, problems,<br />

or grievances to Jean-Paul or Jody’s attention whenever they occur. Grievances should not<br />

be shared with other staff but need to be immediately reported to Jody <strong>and</strong> Jean- Paul.<br />

Conduct St<strong>and</strong>ards<br />

We ask all staff to:<br />

Arrive on time <strong>and</strong> ready for work (no breakfast/lunch is brought to work <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s<br />

are free to start work)<br />

Have a watch or other time piece to keep track of time.<br />

Follow all safety precautions<br />

Work respectfully with all staff members <strong>and</strong> farm members<br />

Serve as an example of the st<strong>and</strong>ards that Roxbury Farm st<strong>and</strong>s for.<br />

Purchasing Supplies<br />

Please discuss purchases with Jean-Paul or Jody beforeh<strong>and</strong>. Always bring back a receipt<br />

<strong>and</strong> place them in the basket on the main computer desk. If you make out-of- pocket<br />

purchases <strong>and</strong> need reimbursement please record purchases <strong>and</strong> include all<br />

receipts.<br />

Farm Trucks <strong>and</strong> Vehicles<br />

No farm vehicles can be used for personal use. We are not covered for accidents that involve<br />

personal use of farm trucks or other vehicles. If you want to be a driver of any farm vehicle you<br />

will need to supply a copy of your driver's license <strong>and</strong> a proof of a clean drivers record from<br />

DMV.<br />

Tractors <strong>and</strong> Equipment<br />

No one is allowed to use any tractor or implements unless they have been trained <strong>and</strong> have<br />

permission from the farmers. This includes the forklift, shop tools, power washer, skid loader,<br />

etc. Apprentices will receive a tractor safety training <strong>and</strong> basic tractor maintenance skills.


Other Farm Policies<br />

Please discuss any use of farm property for personal use with Jean-Paul <strong>and</strong> Jody. This<br />

includes using the farm shop, farm tools, <strong>and</strong>/or farm vehicles. Farm cell phones or l<strong>and</strong> lines<br />

are not for personal use. Internet access <strong>and</strong> long distance calling are not provided by farm.<br />

Please do not use the office phone for long distance calls unless you have a calling card.<br />

The main computer in the office is not be used by anyone other than Linda, Keri, Jody or Jean-<br />

Paul. One specifically assigned computer is used for regular farm record keeping <strong>and</strong> can<br />

during used for internet access by apprentices or other staff members after<br />

work hours.<br />

If you use the office please make sure to turn off the lights, turn down the heat, <strong>and</strong> lock the<br />

door when you leave.<br />

Description of Responsibilities<br />

This is written in cooperation between the apprentice <strong>and</strong> the farmers based on the apprentices<br />

interests, goals, <strong>and</strong> skills.<br />

Acknowledgement of receipt <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

I acknowledge that I have received the 2012 employment <strong>and</strong> housing agreement <strong>and</strong> that I<br />

have read <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong> the policies.<br />

I underst<strong>and</strong> that this document represents only current policies <strong>and</strong> benefits, <strong>and</strong> that it<br />

does not create a contract of employment. Roxbury Farm retains the right to change these<br />

policies <strong>and</strong> benefits, as it deems advisable.<br />
