commonly present in current Garry oak meadow plant assemblages,
which facilitated comparisons between the sites. Further, we assumed
these regionally common species to be surrogates for the overall
responses of native and exotic species to the various changes affecting
this system (e.g. intense herbivory, fire suppression, invasive plants, etc.).
Figures 3 and 4 show some of the more charismatic flowering plants we
encountered during our survey.
We ran replicate 60 m transects parallel to the prevailing slopes at the
two sites and placed 1 m 2 quadrats at 0, 20, 40, and 60 m so as to capture
as much variation as possible in the vegetation at each site. We recorded
the orientation of each transect using a compass and made sure that each
quadrat was placed squarely with the transect line running through the
middle. Within each quadrat we visually estimated the percent coverage
of each of the six plant species using the Braun Blanquet cover scale
