REGIONAL PARTNER PORTS
Brunsbüttel Ports GmbH
The Mittellandkanal connects Hamburg to the western
German canal system and, via the Rhine River, to
southern Germany. For example, a regularly scheduled,
heavy load barge line shuttles between Hamburg and
the inland port in Mannheim every two weeks.
The inland ports along the Elbe River are important
partners for the Port of Hamburg. The port of Aken is
an important logistics site for the plants in the chemical
industry centred around the cities of Halle, Leuna and
Bitterfeld. As a high-performance trimodal cargo centre,
the port provides handling services for bulk cargo, heavy
lifts and containers. Both the Elbe Container Line and
a rail shuttle service provide connections to Hamburg
twice a week.
The Port of Magdeburg is a further important node in
Hamburg’s hinterland network. The Magdeburger Hafen
GmbH focuses particularly on container traffic, as well
as handling solid bulk cargo, liquids and heavy loads.
The port has been expanded in a series of construction
stages to cover an area of 40 hectares and provide a
modern waterside handling facility and an intermodal
facility (“freight village”). The Port of Magdeburg will
be improved further through the construction of a lowwater
lock, which will guarantee a water depth of four
metres on 365 days per year from 2010 onwards. In
response to the increasingly close connections between
Magdeburg’s inland port and the Hamburg seaport, the
port operating company, Magdeburger Hafen GmbH,
has set up an office in Hamburg.
Changes are also going on in the inland ports in Saxony
(Dresden, Riesa, Torgau, Roßlau, Děčín, and Lovosice).
Investments in the port of Dresden over the last few
years, for instance, have made it into an established site
for service businesses dealing with heavy and project
cargo. A new high capacity and heavy load liner service
on the Elbe was set up to meet consignors’ growing demand
for economical and environmentally sound forms
of transportation. It plies between the ports of Dresden,
Aken, Schoenebeck, Magdeburg and Hamburg several
times per week. A major investment project for the inland
ports of Saxony is the planned construction of an intermodal
terminal in the Port of Riesa. The rail and road infrastructure
in several other ports is also being improved.
Brunsbüttel Ports GmbH is part of the Schramm group, operating
the Ports of Brunsbüttel:
• Elbehafen (Universal Port)
• Port of Ostermoor (Liquid and general cargo)
• Oilport (Liquid goods)
Every year about 10 million tons of cargo is handled in the
Ports of Brunsbüttel with the Elbehafen Brunsbüttel giving it a
ranking of sixth among German seaports.
Perfectly located at the Elbe and the Kiel Canal, Brunsbüttel offers
direct access to North Sea, Baltic Sea and European inland
waterways, as well as industrial areas within close distance to
the port itself. These advantages make the Ports of Brunsbüttel
the most attractive centre for cargo handling for the largest
coherent industrial area in Schleswig-Holstein and for the metropolitan
area of Hamburg.
Today the Elbehafen is a Universal Port with extensive customer
focus and logistics competence. Efficient transport
connections by land and sea, for truck, rail, feeder and inland
vessels, provide excellent conditions for an effective logistics
hub; especially for handling equipment for wind power stations
(nacelles, hubs, blades, towers), steel pipes and aluminium
coils in the Elbehafen. Heavy lift cargoes of up to 500 t are also
catered for.
