PORT OF HAMBURG
The Hamburg Container Terminals
When turnkey industrial projects and machinery parts
have to be transported to overseas destinations, much
of the cargo is carried in containers. Four efficient container
terminals and numerous multi-purpose facilities
in Hamburg ensure that theses boxes are handled quickly
and economically. The Port of Hamburg is able to deal
with a total volume of up to approximately 12.5 million
TEU per year.
The Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg is the
second largest handling facility in the Eurogate Group,
Europe’s largest container terminal operator. The com-
Flexible Multi-Purpose Terminals
Despite a high degree of containerisation (containers
make up over 97% of the port’s volume), breakbulk and
conventional cargo handling is an an important field of
activity in an all-inclusive port. Hamburg’s specialised
multi-purpose terminals handle high volumes of rolling
cargo and other non containerised cargo as for example
project cargo, heavy lifts and all kind of breakbulk commodities.
The Buss Hansa Terminal is a high-capacity multi-purpose
terminal. Along with all sorts of spot charters,
many worldwide liner services call there. Container
gantries, ro-ro ramps, and a heavy lift crane equip
the terminal to handle breakbulk and container cargo,
short sea services, ro-ro vessels, project cargo and
other non-containerised cargo efficiently. The facilities
underwent major re-organisation and reconstruction in
2008. Thanks to these measures the Buss Hansa Terminal
can now handle 350,000 TEU per year. C. Steinweg
Süd-West Terminal is a highly efficient multi-purpose
terminal operator. Breakbulk and heavylift, liner & tramp
vessels, barges and container vessels with a capacity of
up to 3,500 TEU are loaded and discharged at six berths.
Project cargo, heavy lifts, rolling cargo, break bulk, steel,
metals and containers make up the main cargo types, as
well as green coffee and cocoa. The company recently
added another new mobile crane with a lifting capacity
of 150 metric tons. This modern and efficient facility will
be expanded extensively over the next few years. The
BLG Auto Terminal Hamburg is dedicated to handling
vehicles. The facilities belong to the automobile division
of the BLG Logistics Group’s network of terminals
and services. The terminal in Hamburg has space to
park 12,000 cars. BLG Auto Terminal Hamburg handled,
stored and processed 200,000 cars in 2009. Vehicles and
other ro-ro cargo are the specialty of Rhenus Midgard
in the Dradenau port basin, as well. Along with two roro
ramps, the terminal also provides two lo-lo berths.
Containers, forest products and project cargo in particular
are loaded and discharged there. Unikai takes care
of shipping new and used automobiles worldwide on
pure carcarriers or pure car and truckcarriers, as well as
handling commercial vehicles, containers and all kinds
of general cargo, including project cargo. Along with
two ro-ro berths, there is also a container gantry and a
mobile crane with a capacity of 104 metric tons available
at the terminal at O’Swaldkai. Wallmann Terminal, being
a high-performance operator offers the whole range of
modern logistic solutions for handling and storage of
goods, completes the whole picture. Amongst various
heavy lift equipment, Wallmann operates two mobile
cranes, each having a lifting capacity of 140 tons (twin
operation up to 280 tons) and is optimally equipped to
handle turnkey industrial projects and other heavy-lift
cargoes. Tailor-made, covered facilities for seaworthy
packing are available on the terminal area.
plex includes six berths for large ships and 21 container
gantry cranes. It has a capacity of four million TEU per
year. The Eurokombi Terminal for intermodal cargo
transport is also located there. Eurogate has invested
heavily in expanding and modernising the terminal during
the last few years. Furthermore, the terminal will be
extended to cover a large area to the west in the coming
years, increasing the handling capacity to a total of six
million TEU.
The HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) is
among the most modern container terminals in the
world and has an extremely high level of automation.
A total of 15 container gantry cranes are available at
four berths. Containerships are loaded and discharged
semi-automatically by double trolley gantries. Software
steers not only the rail-mounted portal cranes, but also
the driverless automated guided vehicles that transport
the containers between the quay and the storage areas.
This makes the Altenwerder extremely fast and efficient.
In 2009, it set a new record with 165.2 container
movements per hour. The Kombi-Transeuropa terminal
is located within in the container terminal. It handles rail
transport for containers and intermodal swap-bodies.
The HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB) is the
biggest container handling facility in the port, both in
terms of area and volumes handled. Every third container
in the Port of Hamburg is handled there. 22 container
gantriy cranes deal with the approximately 5,000
ships that moor there each year. Up to 1,100 railcars are
loaded and unloaded every day. A programme of continuous
modernisation will expand the terminal’s capacity
stepbystep over the coming years.
The HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT) is another
HHLA container handling facility. It can accommodate
huge post-panmax container ships. They can dock at
four berths with a total of eight container gantries.
Extensive optimisation and extension is currently being
carried out. The new on-dock rail terminal at CTT, which
began operations in 2008, ensures excellent connections
to the hinterland. Three ultra-modern transtainers load
and discharge trains up to 700 metres long quickly and
efficiently.
PORT OF HAMBURG
Efficient Specialised Terminals for Special Commodities and Breakbulk Cargo
Storage Specialists Meeting Every Need
The Port of Hamburg provides extensive handling and
storage capacity for all kinds of project and breakbulk
cargo. Hamburg is one of the leading ports in Europe,
and the largest in Germany, for the importation of
green coffee, tea, cocoa and spices. And a wide variety
of reefer and deep freeze warehouses are available for
temperature-sensitive goods like vegetables, fruit, meat,
fish and butter.
About 1.2 million tons of green coffee, 252,000 tons of
cocoa, more than 444,000 tons of tea and spices pass
every year through the Port of Hamburg and its specialised
warehouses. Containerisation has changed
transport of these goods, traditionally shipped on conventional
vessels. Most are now shipped in containers.
Most of Hamburg’s commodity warehouse operators
are registered with the London International Futures
Exchange (LIFFE) and with the New York Board of Trade
(NYBOT) as approved warehouse keepers. The International
Cocoa Trading Organization (ICCO) uses Hamburg
as a centre to store its buffer stocks. Specialised Hamburg
warehouse operators, some registered with the
London Metal Exchange, offer services such as cleaning,
customs clearance, processing, sorting, delivery to
final destination and/or production sites. Some of these
companies are: Eichholtz & Cons., NKG Kala Hamburg
GmbH, Schwarze & Cons. GmbH, C. Steinweg (Süd-
West-Terminal) GmbH & Co. KG, Berthold Vollers GmbH,
Werner Bruhns Lagereigesellschaft and Wallmann & Co.
Hamburg also serves as the gateway to Scandinavia,
Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, Austria and Switzerland.
Several of the largest and best-known German coffee
companies and six roasting plants are located here.
CTH Coffee Terminal Hamburg (www.coffeeterminal.de)
and NGK Kala Hamburg (www.nkg-kala.com) are among
the largest specialised service companies that provide
large silo and processing facilities in this sector.
Hamburg is one of the main trading centres for tea,
cocoa and spices. 50 to 60 percent of the world trade
in tea passes through the port. In addition, Hamburg is
Germany’s prime seaport for the import of raw cocoa
beans which require special care in handling. The port
is also among the top three in the world for handling
spices and dried fruits. Traditionally, Hamburg’s storage
specialists are known for the high quality and reliability
of their work. Whether it is Quast & Cons. (www.
quast-cons.de) with its modern warehousing for raw
cocoa and dried fruits, the spice specialist Werner
Bruhns Lagereigesellschaft (www.wernerbruhns.de), or
Schwarze & Consort. (www.schwarze-cons.de), which
handles forest products, machine and electrical components,
pyrotechnics and foodstuffs, they all pay special
attention to satisfying their customers every need. Other
companies providing services in this area are Vollers
Hamburg GmbH (www.vollers.com) which offers more
than 135,000 square metres of warehouse space and
8,000 metric tons of silo capacity for green coffee, and
Arnold Koch (www.arnold-koch.de), a specialist for food
and non-food imports. H. D. Cotterell (www.cotterell.de)
has been located in the Port of Hamburg for 120 years
and provides quality control, warehousing, processing
and forwarding of foodstuffs and products like rubber,
for which they provide temperature-controlled storage
and heating chambers. Eichholtz GmbH (www.eichholtz.
info) focuses on oilseeds, legumes and dried fruits, as
well as non-food articles. In 2009 they opened a new
cooling plant for their refrigerated warehouse in the Port
of Hamburg.
Hamburg has a lot to offer in the area of fresh foods, too.
Services are available for handling all kinds of food, be
it meat, fish or fruits. More than 700,000 tons of bananas
are handled yearly at the HHLA Frucht- und Kühl-Zentrum
(FKZ) (www.hhla.de) alone. This terminal sets new
standards for fruit logistics with its new fully automated
climate-controlled warehouse. The new warehouse has
four separately controlled reefer rooms, an automated
rack storage and retrieval system and the newest in RFID
(Radio Frequency Identification) technology.
In Hamburg-Altenwerder, not far from the large container
terminals, Frigo Coldstore Logistics (www.frigo-hamburg.de)
has over 14,000 square metres of warehouse space
for 25,000 pallets in two different temperature zones.
Quite different sorts of specialised services are provided
at the Hamburg Sugar Terminal within the C. Steinweg
(Süd-West) Facility. Equipment is available for handling
containerised sugar as well as for bagged and bulk cargo.
The Vollers company is an expert for green coffee, cocoa,
nuts, seeds and dried fruits and legumes. Non-food
cargo and all kinds of commodities also pass over the
docks here. H. D. Cotterell specialises almost entirely on
soft commodities. Its terminal at Ellerholzdamm handles
spices, legumes and dried fruits, green coffee, cocoa,
tinned foods, latex, rubber, non-hazardous chemicals
and carpets. Euryza Mühle, located on the Peute Canal,
focuses entirely on rice. Up to 400 metric tons of various
kinds of rice are delivered by trucks or barges and processed
there every day.
Hamburg is also optimally equipped to handle dangerous
cargo and other chemical products and the
petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries are major
customers in the Port of Hamburg. Around 16 million
metric tons of all classes of cargo are handled according
to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code
(IMDG) in Hamburg every year. Various companies in
the Port of Hamburg provide secure warehouses and
tanks for dangerous cargo that conform to the most
stringent safety standards.
Rhenus Midgard is operating a facility with two terminals for
handling all kinds of commodities in Hamburg. Aside from the
bulk clearance of containers, all kinds of goods are handled on
the quay. From the export of equipment and import of raw materials
all the way to handling and storing materials requiring
special supervision. The company provides a wide spectrum of
highly specialised logistics services.
The long-established Hamburg-based port logistics services
provider, Rhenus Midgard is one of the companies in the Port
of Hamburg with an infra- and substructure (mooring and
terminal premises). In addition, the company is the gateway
to the network of Rhenus AG logistics centre active across
Europe. Within the Rhenus Logistics network, the Hamburgbased
Rhenus Midgard realises multimodal gate-to-gate and
house-to-house solutions. Both these factors contribute to
Rhenus Midgard being capable of optimally adapting to the
requirements of the industry, commerce as well as suppliers
and distributors.
Complimenting its port services, the company offers tailored
logistics services for transport companies and cargo handlers,
for example in the fields of construction and recycling management.
For the purpose of realising complete supply and
disposal chains, Rhenus Midgard engages in project-oriented
cooperation with a range of relevant partners, thus being able
to realise virtually any solution. With this flexible service mix,
the company represents a central element in the implementation
of Hamburg’s multi-purpose strategy as an universal port
focusing on container handling as well as general and bulk
cargo.
The two terminals in the seaports of Harburg and Dradenau in
Finkenwerder operated by Rhenus Midgard feature different
performance profiles with respect to their individual location:
Building material and recycling location in the seaport of Harburg
In Harburg, the focus is on handling gripper-capable bulk cargo
(like coal, concentrate; scrap, fertilizer, wood etc.), large quantities
of general cargo, project loads and potential recyclables.
At the 500-metre long pier, vessels of the handy size class up
to 55,000 tdw and a draught of up to 10.4 metres are handled at
any time. For handling particular and mixed recycling materials,
the terminal features security facilities and qualifications
corresponding to the Federal Emission Protection Law. And
as owner of the port infrastructure, the company can itself
determine the utilisation of its facilities independent from
political decisions pertaining to port matters. On-site, recycling
and construction companies have created the main focus of
activities. Local cooperation with the recycling department of
the Rhenus AG as well as external partners allows for tailored
solutions to ever more complex challenges.
Short Sea Gateway in Hamburg-Finkenwerder
With its exposed position in the west of the Port of Hamburg
and the close proximity of the A7 highway intersection Waltershof,
the Dradenau terminal, offers favourable conditions for
fast ro-ro services, e.g. in the short-sea traffic with Western
Europe as well as the Baltic Sea area including Russia. Furthermore,
container and flat racks can be dispatched faster and
more favourably by the so-called “Greenliner“ to Hamburg by
barge.
At the Dradenau pier, the handling of ro-ro cargo and other
general cargo (like steel, paper, project cargo for wind energy,
container and flat racks) is offered. With its ro-ro bridge
designed for loads of up to 180 tons and a secure terminal area,
equipment manufacturers and project freight forwarders are
increasingly calling upon the services of Rhenus Midgard for
heavy loads destined for overseas.
PORT OF HAMBURG
Terminal O‘Swaldkai
Wallmann & Co. (GmbH & Co. KG)
The site of the O’Swaldkai is the largest facility specialising in
wheeled cargo in the Port of Hamburg, handling modern ro-ro
vessels plus project cargo and forest products. Other focal
points are fruit logistics and the loading and discharge of general
cargo of all kinds as well as containers. Approximately 1,000
staff members work on an area of 75 hectares around the clock
performing highly complex logistics services.
General Cargo
The majority general cargo in Hamburg is handled via containers
today, however, O’Swaldkai handles the transfer of extra
large and heavy goods smoothly, from reception to loading.
The particular challenge here is to load the general cargo economically
onto the rolltrailers so it can be moved on wheels.
With this method packed or unpacked goods of any kind up to a
weight of 100 tons are moved using the terminals own equipment.
In addition, floating cranes with a capacity of up to 210
tons are available for heavier loads.
Containers
‘Con-ro’ ships that discharge and load containers in addition
to wheeled cargo are also handled at the quay of the multifunctional
terminal at O’Swaldkai; and yet another focus of
O’Swaldkai is the handling of automobiles and forest products
(wood pulp, newsprint and decor paper). Capacities for reefers
and hazardous goods slots are available as well.
Roll on – Roll off
When it comes to shipping vehicles, there is no avoiding the
Port of Hamburg’s largest facility specialising in wheeled and
trailer cargo. It offers comprehensive service packages in the
field of automotive logistics. From reception control by an
independent surveyor, to handling all customs formalities and
stowing the cars into containers when necessary, and through
to wide-ranging data tracking; all the complex demands of the
shipper are taken care of here. The 1.5-km-long quay provides
two state-of-the-art ro-ro berths which are regularly called at
by the largest vessels of this type in the world.
Fruit Logistics
The O’Swaldkai is the centre of fruit logistics in Germany. More
than one million tons of fruit are handled per annum at the HHLA
Frucht- und Kühl-Zentrum GmbH, including more than 700,000
tons of bananas. Of crucial importance is the maintenance of an
uninterrupted cold storage chain as well as seamless and complete
documentation. The HHLA Frucht- und Kühl-Zentrum, the
company’s fruit and refrigeration centre, is certified according to
the IFS (International Food Standard) and to QS (a food quality
monitoring system) and constitutes one of the most modern
fruit logistics facilities in the world.
Innovative technology such as specially developed software
for monitoring each phase of the handling process is employed
around the clock. In 2009 a partly automated hall was put into
operation. This complex contains four cold storage depots with
set temperatures, predominantly for storing bananas. Fruit
logistics specialists, Ulrich Stein GmbH, which is headquartered
on the O’Swaldkai, is in charge of handling the import of
fruits and vegetables.
The majority owned multi-purpose terminal, Wallmann is
located in the southern part of the port. The terminal has direct
rail access and short distances to next motorways exits. The
service mix here includes handling of all kind of conventional
and project cargoes, heavy lifts, stuffing and stripping of
containers, warehousing, processing, seaworthy packing and
distribution services.
The Wallmann terminal offers 55,000 sqm of covered storage
in 11 warehouses plus a large area for open storage in the terminal.
The Port of Hamburg is constantly at work, day and
night, just like a clock. A wide range of highly specialised
port service providers make sure it keeps on running.
‘No ifs and buts’ – Safe Stowing
Numerous experts for cargo stowage and inspection
work in the Port of Hamburg to make sure that the cargo
arrives at its destination safely, free of damage and on
time. For example, Swop Seaworthy Packing (www.
swop.eu), which belongs to the Eurogate Group, provides
seaworthy packaging of project cargo and oversized,
heavy and sensitive goods. Buss Ports (www.
buss-ports.de) is another leader in the Port of Hamburg
for securing and stowing cargo, providing a full range
of services through Gerd Buss Stevedoring GmbH, G.B.
Marine Technik Lashing & Securing and Securitas (www.
securitas-gmbh.de). Paul Grimm (www.paulgrimm.de)
is also active in this field, as well as supplying lashing
material, the company also equips new ships.
Tally services are also still in demand as a part of the
quality control. HTS Tally Service (www.hanseatic-tally.
de) is one such company that also carries out surveys.
Kapitän K. Koschig and Albers-Hansen (www.albershansen.com)
are available as cargo inspectors and
independent experts.
If there should be a case of damage, insurances usually
covers the cost. Insurance services are also located in
Hamburg, one of the leading sites for insurance companies
in Germany. The Willis Group (www.willis.de), Georg
Dunker (www.georg-duncker.com) and its subsidiary
HTG – Hamburgische Transportversicherungsvermittlungsgesellschaft
are specialists in risk management.
Also Aon (www.aon.com) is not to be forgotten, the
biggest insurance broker worldwide, which just recently
moved into its new German headquarters in Hamburg.
Container Packing at the Port of Hamburg: Neutral and with High-Performance
The trade association of container packing operators in flat or open-top containers, as well as custom packaging
Hamburg represents about 25 companies – mainly SMEs suitable for sea-going transport can be provided – and
– that are engaged in the professional, safe and efficient if required, custom-made – for over-width, over-height
loading, unloading and intermediate storage of general and especially heavy or bulky cargo items in the area of
import and export cargo in accordance with the existing project and plant and equipment consignments.
CTU packing guidelines. These companies are also committed
to maintaining and further developing existing
standards of quality. For Port of Hamburg customers
in Germany and abroad, the abundance of qualified,
efficient providers of “stuffing” and “stripping” services
for consolidated and full containers (LCL and FCL containers)
is an important decision-making criterion when
selecting a port. As well as forwarding operators and
shipping companies, the range of customers for packing
services at the Port of Hamburg also includes trading
houses and industrial companies.
The container packing operators represented by the
Hamburg-based trade association alone pack several
hundred thousand TEU (20-foot standard containers)
each year and employ a combined workforce of more
than 2,000.
The member companies of the trade association established
in the year 2001 are also strongly committed
to education and training and they are continually
investing in expanding and modernising their plant and
equipment. As well as providing sufficient yard space,
modern cargo-handling equipment and heated halls for
sensitive goods, some of these businesses also have
specially equipped storage areas for hazardous goods
and government approved de-gassing facilities. Special
From a legal perspective, the packed containers are
inspected by a representative of the shipping company,
however responsibility for complying with all packing
regulations rests with the container packing operation.
In the case of hazardous goods containers, packing
in accordance with the relevant regulations must be
further confirmed by signing the container packing certificate.
For FCL-FCL and FCL-LCL containers, the responsibility
generally lies with the shipper, e.g. a manufacturing
company based inland, where a complete container
is loaded at the manufacturing plant and made ready for
export.
In the Bill of Lading, this is documented by the notation
“shippers load, stowage and count”. In contrast,
for LCL-FCL and LCL-LCL containers it is the container
packing operator, employed to stow the cargo that takes
the responsibility, and this is documented by means of a
signature on the container packing certificate.
The extensive range of services provided by the container
packing operator includes:
• Packing (stuffing) and unpacking (stripping) of
containers
• Stowage planning and advice regarding optimal cargo
space utilisation
• Inventory-controlled special free-port and customs
warehouses
• Preparation of loading and packing lists as well as
shipping notes and load request forms
• Customs clearance
• Photographic documentation of packed containers
• Storage, order picking and processing of merchandise
• Container de-gassing
• Provision of seaworthy packing according to relevant
specifications
• Container transport
• Loading and unloading of railway carriages
In addition, some of the container packing operators
in the trade association also handle hazardous goods,
transhipment packing, the preparation of IMO packing
certificates and accompanying transport documents.
The trade association will be pleased to provide additional
information about these companies on request.
Fachverband der Container-Packbetriebe e.V. in Hamburg
www.container-packbetriebe.de
info@container-packbetriebe.de
The exchange of information with customers, such as the
transmission of required shipping documentation for exports
and imports, is increasingly handled electronically.
Proper stowage of general cargo for sea-going transport
is of vital importance, since even small gaps inside a packed
container can cause individual items of cargo to be
compressed and damaged during transit and handling,
and hence increase the risk of loss. Containers used in
global maritime shipping do not conform to the dimensions
of the European pool pallet system and optimised
and efficient use of space therefore calls for special
stowage planning.
Focusing on Cargo Services
Due to the fact that containers play a huge role in the
Port of Hamburg, numerous businesses are focused on
all kinds of services that deal with the boxes. Countless
container freight stations, depots, repair shops, as well
as rental and sales companies are to be found in the
neighbourhood of the big terminals.
Among them are:
• EUROCARGO – Container Freight Station
• SWOP Seaworthy Packing GmbH
The Port of Hamburg is intensifying cooperation with its
partner ports to meet future logistics challenges together.
International project cargo and breakbulk is a complex
business and for the port and the different service providers,
a special challenge. In order to prove their ability
as a reliable and strong partner in the global project cargo
and breakbulk market and to make the most of their
regional strengths, the Port of Hamburg and the neighbouring
ports in Lübeck, Kiel, Brunsbüttel, Glückstadt,
Stade and Cuxhaven cooperate and develop strong
logistics ties. This cooperation, which extends well beyond
the state borders, is also the basis for partnerships
with numerous ports along the Elbe river. The goal is
to achieve a more prominent market position as a port
region with common interests and an identity of its own.
Specific agreements have been formulated to cover the
close cooperation in technical and commercial areas, in
marketing, and in site development and management.
At the same time, each port has its own individual advantages
that should be strongly emphasized. Close to
Hamburg there are Germany’s major Baltic Sea ports:
Indeed, Hamburg has become the most important hub
for the rapidly growing states around the Baltic Sea.
Lübeck, as the largest German port on the Baltic Sea,
is thus an important partner for the Port of Hamburg.
Lübeck offers around 150 departures per week to 25
destinations all around the Baltic Sea. Lübeck’s particular
specialty is ro-ro traffic, as well as ferries and cruise
shipping. The seaport in Kiel profits to a large degree
from its strategic location on the Kiel Canal, which links
the Baltic Sea to the North Sea. It provides over 5,000 m
of quays for all sizes of ocean going vessels as well as
barges in its various terminals around the Kiel Fjord. The
broad portfolio of services provided by numerous cargo
handling facilities, particularly in the area of ferries and
ro-ro transportation, was further expanded in 2009 with
increased container handling in the Ostuferhafen area of
the port. A new mobile crane was purchased specially
for this purpose. The goal is to reach a throughput of
10,000 TEU in the Ostuferhafen in the first year.
With its location at the mouth of the Elbe River, Cuxhaven
is an excellent port for short-sea traffic. The port is also
well prepared to handle all kinds of general and ro-ro
cargo. High growth potential results from its function as
a base for the offshore wind energy business. In September
2008, a new terminal went into operation that
can handle foundation elements and tower segments
weighing up to 650 metric tons per piece. A heavy-lift
platform makes it possible to transport completely assembled
offshore wind energy turbines as well as individual
components. With a maximum total load of 90 tons
per square metre, it is one of the strongest construction
works on the North Sea coast. Planning is already underway
for further extension of the offshore port.
REGIONAL PARTNER PORTS
The Port of Glückstadt is located between Hamburg and
Brunsbüttel. It handles mostly bulk and general cargo
for the local area and serves a number of industries
such as paper, cement and lumber companies, as well as
power plants. The port handles fertilizers and feeds for
agriculture and also takes care of grain transport.
The seaport Stade is also located between Hamburg
and the mouth of the Elbe River. It serves as a hub for
local production plants in the international chemical and
aluminium industries. The port has special expertise in
the area of handling solid, liquid and gas bulk cargo as
well as in dealing with dangerous goods. The Hamburgbased
Buss Group is currently carrying out the initial
phase of expansion of a new multi-purpose terminal that
is to go into operation in 2010.
The Buss Group is active along the Upper Elbe River
as well as in Stade. The cargo handling and logistics
company was fundamental in founding the Port Operating
Company at Wittenberge in mid-2008. This city
is located about 130 km southeast of Hamburg on the
Elbe River in the state of Brandenburg. A new inland
port is being developed in the industrial area in the
southern part of the city. Two new inland port facilities
are planned there: one for liquids and grain, and the
other for container handling. As a tri-modal terminal,
the site provides connections not only to the river, but
is also close to the Hamburg-Berlin rail line and the A14
autobahn. Wittenberge will certainly play an important
role in Hamburg’s hinterland connections, particularly
for container transport.
The Elbe port Brunsbüttel, located directly at the entrance
to the Kiel Canal, is also equipped to serve the wind
power industry. Around 1,800 onshore and offshore
components were handled there in 2008. Brunsbüttel
concentrates on bulk and liquid cargo, along with project
logistics. For example, the Brunsbüttel Ports handle
1.5 million metric tons of copper concentrates annually
for Aurubis AG in Hamburg, Europe’s largest copper
producer. Ocean-going ships bring the ore to Brunsbüttel,
where it is transhipped to barges that deliver it to
the Hamburg plant. Planning for extensive expansion of
the Elbeport Brunsbüttel is already completed and first
steps toward implementation have been taken.
Berlin’s inland waterway ports, which are linked to
Hamburg through the Elbe-Havel Canal, already play an
important part in the seaport’s hinterland traffic connections.
BEHALA, the Berlin port operating and logistics
company, has recently introduced a regular container
shuttle connection between Hamburg and Berlin.
A barge was chartered specially for the Elbe-Spree container
line, which is operated jointly with the Hamburg
forwarding company Konrad Zippel Spediteur GmbH.
This regular liner service comes as an addition to the
five, weekly container shuttle services already linking
Hamburg and Berlin. As long as transport time is not a
critical issue, customers can use these barge lines as
a cost-effective way to transport heavy containers and
project cargo to and from Hamburg.
The three inland ports in Hanover, the capital of the
Northern German state of Lower Saxony, are located
right on the Mittellandkanal (Midland Canal) and provide
good connections to the Port of Hamburg through regular
barge lines. In cooperation with the shipping line,
Deutsche Binnenreederei AG, three weekly connections
are provided to link the Container Terminal at Hannover
with Hamburg. Another specialty there is project logistics;
the modern facilities can handle heavy lifts of up to
400 metric tons.
The Mittellandkanal also links Hamburg to the inland ports
in Brunswick and Minden. Brunswick is the most important
inland port for container traffic and provides a regular
barge connection on weekdays as well as container
train connections and truck traffic to Hamburg. Minden’s
port is important to the Port of Hamburg since it serves
as a tri-modal logistics hub for the region of eastern
Westfalia. Two barge departures per week link the two
cities, and train and truck connections are also available.
28 29

REGIONAL PARTNER PORTS
Brunsbüttel Ports GmbH
The Mittellandkanal connects Hamburg to the western
German canal system and, via the Rhine River, to
southern Germany. For example, a regularly scheduled,
heavy load barge line shuttles between Hamburg and
the inland port in Mannheim every two weeks.
The inland ports along the Elbe River are important
partners for the Port of Hamburg. The port of Aken is
an important logistics site for the plants in the chemical
industry centred around the cities of Halle, Leuna and
Bitterfeld. As a high-performance trimodal cargo centre,
the port provides handling services for bulk cargo, heavy
lifts and containers. Both the Elbe Container Line and
a rail shuttle service provide connections to Hamburg
twice a week.
The Port of Magdeburg is a further important node in
Hamburg’s hinterland network. The Magdeburger Hafen
GmbH focuses particularly on container traffic, as well
as handling solid bulk cargo, liquids and heavy loads.
The port has been expanded in a series of construction
stages to cover an area of 40 hectares and provide a
modern waterside handling facility and an intermodal
facility (“freight village”). The Port of Magdeburg will
be improved further through the construction of a lowwater
lock, which will guarantee a water depth of four
metres on 365 days per year from 2010 onwards. In
response to the increasingly close connections between
Magdeburg’s inland port and the Hamburg seaport, the
port operating company, Magdeburger Hafen GmbH,
has set up an office in Hamburg.
Changes are also going on in the inland ports in Saxony
(Dresden, Riesa, Torgau, Roßlau, Děčín, and Lovosice).
Investments in the port of Dresden over the last few
years, for instance, have made it into an established site
for service businesses dealing with heavy and project
cargo. A new high capacity and heavy load liner service
on the Elbe was set up to meet consignors’ growing demand
for economical and environmentally sound forms
of transportation. It plies between the ports of Dresden,
Aken, Schoenebeck, Magdeburg and Hamburg several
times per week. A major investment project for the inland
ports of Saxony is the planned construction of an intermodal
terminal in the Port of Riesa. The rail and road infrastructure
in several other ports is also being improved.
Brunsbüttel Ports GmbH is part of the Schramm group, operating
the Ports of Brunsbüttel:
• Elbehafen (Universal Port)
• Port of Ostermoor (Liquid and general cargo)
• Oilport (Liquid goods)
Every year about 10 million tons of cargo is handled in the
Ports of Brunsbüttel with the Elbehafen Brunsbüttel giving it a
ranking of sixth among German seaports.
Perfectly located at the Elbe and the Kiel Canal, Brunsbüttel offers
direct access to North Sea, Baltic Sea and European inland
waterways, as well as industrial areas within close distance to
the port itself. These advantages make the Ports of Brunsbüttel
the most attractive centre for cargo handling for the largest
coherent industrial area in Schleswig-Holstein and for the metropolitan
area of Hamburg.
Today the Elbehafen is a Universal Port with extensive customer
focus and logistics competence. Efficient transport
connections by land and sea, for truck, rail, feeder and inland
vessels, provide excellent conditions for an effective logistics
hub; especially for handling equipment for wind power stations
(nacelles, hubs, blades, towers), steel pipes and aluminium
coils in the Elbehafen. Heavy lift cargoes of up to 500 t are also
catered for.
REGIONAL PARTNER PORTS
Cuxport GmbH
The Cuxport multi-purpose terminal, built in 1997 in a favourable
location on the Elbe Estuary close to Hamburg and
Bremerhaven, is both a newcomer and a shooting star among
the seaports in the German bight. Within just a few years, the
modern port operator has acquired international recognition
on the cargo market. Initially designed for ro-ro transport and
general cargo handling, the deepwater terminal is now a transhipment
and logistic centre for all types of goods and is used
by a large number of transport companies.
Facts and figures
Cuxport can be reached without tidal restrictions or locks, has
REGIONAL PARTNER PORTS
SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co. KG
Lübecker Hafen-Gesellschaft mbH (LHG)
The Port of Kiel is the gateway to the Baltic Sea and a hub for
trade with Scandinavia, the Baltic States and Russia. With its
natural deep-water channel unaffected by tides and its position
at the entrance to the Kiel Canal, along with modern handling
facilities, the port provides optimal service for all kinds of
ships and almost any kind of cargo. Together, the various parts
of the port handle five million metric tons of cargo annually
– including everything from high-grade general cargo to liquid
bulk cargo. Ostuferhafen, the logistics centre on the Kiel fjord,
is particularly well suited for project shipments. A new mobile
port crane with a lifting capacity of up to 140 metric tons is also
based in Ostuferhafen, further extending the port’s range of
services. While its main job is container handling, the crane is
also utilised in handling heavy lifts and project cargo. The new
port crane represents an investment of three million Euros and
was subsidized with EU funding through the state of Schleswig-Holstein’s
program to develop the regional economy.
Along with the new mobile crane, there is another port crane
located at berth one, which was recently used in an unique project,
handling 450 concrete segments, each of them weighing
31 tons, for the construction of a 1.4-kilometer long tunnel
under the Kiel fjord as part of a community heating system.
advantage. Four large warehouses provide over 30,000 sqm
of storage space. The intermodal terminal is located in the
heart of the port. With its three rail spurs it ensures quick cargo
transfer to and from railcars.
Construction and agricultural equipment is regularly delivered
to Kiel to be shipped on to Eastern Europe by ferries. For example,
combined harvesters are shipped to Kiel as components,
assembled in the port and then loaded onto ships. The port
deals with very special projects when locomotives weighing
well over 120 tons are discharged. Handling wind turbine
generators is a relatively new area of business in Kiel. Recently,
six such units, each consisting of a generator weighing 83
tons and three tower segments weighing 40 tons each, were
delivered from the Danish hinterland to Kiel and loaded onto a
barge. The shipment then proceeded along inland waterways
all the way to Northern France.
The Port of Kiel is a fully-owned subsidiary of the City of Kiel
and is commissioned by it to operate the commercial port in
Kiel. The Ostuferhafen cargo terminal is currently the largest
section of the port on the Kiel fjord and provides regularly
scheduled liner connections to St. Petersburg, Riga, Klaipeda
and Kaliningrad. Cargo handling services are provided by the
SEEHAFEN KIEL Stevedoring GmbH and other private companies
The Lübecker Hafen Gesellschaft mbH (LHG) operates
Germany’s largest port on the Baltic Sea, which handles over
24 million metric tons of cargo per year. The LHG terminals can
handle almost any kind of project cargo and heavy cargo, along
with general cargo.
Lübeck provides:
• Safe loading and transhipment to and from all kinds of carriers
• Reliable stowage
• Rigging of cargo gear and tackle
• High-performance handling equipment for all purposes
• Highly motivated, expert personnel
• Large open storage areas
warehouses for short and long-term interim storage
• More than 100 liner departures per week to destinations in
Sweden, Finland, the Baltic states, and the USA
• A draft of up to 9.50 meters and direct access to the European
inland waterway system at all terminals
• Excellent hinterland connections by road and rail
Not just rolling freight, but all kinds of lo-lo cargo are welcome
in the port, as well. The Nordlandkai Terminal provides a mobile
100-ton crane to load and discharge both seagoing ships
and barges. Other cranes with a lifting capacity up to 50 tons
are available at the Seelandkai and the Konsinkai terminals.
Mobile cranes, reach stackers and other handling equipment
are available for operations at any time on all the terminals.
The ro-ro and ferry port provide professional loading for special
cargo handling units like Mafis or cassettes at all terminals.
