The 17th Edition of Weston Creek Cricket
Year records the most successful season
the Club has enjoyed in playing standards
- a fitting end to the twentieth anniversary
celebrated in February this year.
i have once again chosen one of our
younger players - the Cricketer of the
Year, for this year's cover photo.
A publication of this nature calls for a
lot of effort by the production team over
a short period.
Chris Body compiled the statistics and
their accuracy is limited to the accuracy
of the scorebooks.
Beverly Alley, Juliane and An ura Samara
did the typesetting to meet the tight
publishing schedule caused by delays in
receiving copy.
Ewan and Simon Mackenzie spent many
hours proof-reading.

ROUNDUP
John Bowdler
The 1992-93 season was a highly successful
one for the Weston Creek Cricket Club.
Despite one of the wettest seasons in recent
memory, the Club performed with great distinction
on the playing field in its 20th year.
The roll of honour is a long one. We took the
minor premierships in five grades - seconds,
fourths, fifths, sixths and sevenths. Boosted by a
strong performance from the firsts (who came
third in the minor premiership) and an excellent
finish by the thirds, we took out our fifth Club
Championship. This was a very satisfying result,
reflecting the depth of the Club and contributions
from all teams.
As well as Michael, other players to represent the
ACT were Sean Maxwell, Col Hunter, Dean
Lovett, James Peterson, Paul Evans and George
Gregan. The ACT Under 19's included Sean
Mowbray and were coached by Col Rowe, while
Ken Bone managed the ACT Colts side.
The women's team suffered a disappointing loss in
their final but did very well to get there in a
disjointed season. Weston Creek was represented
in the ACT women's team by Robyn Miller (c),
Kim Fazackerley (vc), Lisette Robey, Meredith
Byron and Stephanie Martin. Lisette Robey won
the Chief Minister's Award - a trip to London - for
the most promising young women's cricketer in
the ACT.
Junior cricket fared well in Weston Creek over the
season. Our Kanga cricket numbers pushed over
100 and our eleven junior teams had a solid year.
In the finals, the firsts and seconds suffered defeat
at the semi-final stage. The sevenths fell 16 runs
short in their final. However we took out
premierships in fourth, fifth and sixth grade, the
first time we have won three grades in the one
season.
The trophies didn't end there. We won our third
Veterans' premiership in four years. The fourths
took out the Bel-Air Shield for the ACTCA grade
team with most competition points. The Club
took second prize (of $500) in the Hickman-Gould
trophy for Club of the Year.
On the individual side, there were also
performances of note. At the ACTCA
presentation night, Sean Maxwell received the
award for the First Grade Fieldsman of the Year
(also coming 4th in the batting averages) and Paul
Evans the award of First Grade Wicket-keeper of
the Year. Darren Hossack was a worthy recipient
of the Grade Captain of the Year award for his
efforts with the sixth grade team. Michael Frost
must also have gone very close to taking out the
award for Representative Cricketer of the Year,
with his 485 runs for the ACT.

It is pleasing to see the junior numbers holding up
well, with the likelihood that we will at least
maintain our team numbers next year. A healthy
sign for the Club was the number of young players
who made their mark in the senior grades over the
season and who will no doubt go on to greater
heights in the next few years.
It was a particular achievement to enjoy all this
success in the Club's 20th year. From a junior
cricket club in a new, developing area of Canberra,
WCCC has grown to a substantial spotting
organisation with an enviable track record of onfield
success and positive management. The first
twenty years of the Club were celebrated at a
special anniversary dinner in February, at which
the guest speaker was Brian Booth, former
Australian Test captain and leading batsman. This
was a most entertaining night with around 120
guests sharing reminiscences. Our 20th year was
given permanent recognition in the book "Twenty
Seasons On" in which a number of past and
present players and administrators record special
memories.
Looking to the future of cricket in Weston Creek,
the Club made a substantial investment at the
Stirling ground in 1992-93 by doubling the size of
the pitch area. The development will add greatly
to the longevity of the ground by taking the
pressure off the original square and will help
improve the quality of pitches. It will enable more
use of the ground over the season, including hiring
by other organisations. The contribution of the
ACT Administration to the work is gratefully
acknowledged. To complement this work, the
Club lias secured a Community Development
Giant which, matched by a contribution from the
Club, will allow purchase of new covers at Stirling
for the 1993-94 season.
On the financial side the Club had a difficult year.
The early part of the season saw us juggling the
pressures of paying for the pitch enhancement at
Stirling with financing the start of the season.
That was achieved, and by the second half of the
season we were out of debt. However we expect
to finish 1992-93 with only a small bank balance
and financial management must remain a high
priority for next year's Management Committee.
Certainly the cost of cricket continues to grow.
It is worth devoting some time to each of our
three main sources of revenue - fees, sponsorship
and fund raising.
While payment of fees by senior players was
generally better than in recent years, there
remained some significant problems. As fees are
the main item of revenue, they are the most
critical in cash flow terms for meeting cricketing
expenses over the course of the season - and also
are the fairest way of ensuring members make
their contribution to the Club's operations. For
some $200 senior players get a very good deal in
terms of match and practice facilities for six
months' cricket. Despite this, the Executive and
Registrar had to put in a substantial effort to
secure payment from players, even with the
availability of a bankcard facility. Surely it should
not be such a burden for players to make their fee
payments, rather it should be seen as a
responsibility as a Club member, and we need to
find a better way of ensuring payments are in by
the appropriate date. It is also important that the
top grades give more leadership in this area, as
they benefit from the best facilities and other
assistance such as umpires.
Sponsorship is critical to the health of the Club
and we are privileged to have support from a wide
range of sponsors. The Weston Creek Sports
Club is particularly generous in its assistance,
which goes towards ground preparation and in
supporting cricket activities in many other ways.
Our other sponsors also deserve recognition -

These sponsors underpin the viability of our Club
magazine "Cover Point" which is a major feature
of Creek cricket and which adds much to the spirit
and solidarity of the Club.
Fundraising has not been one of the Club's success
stories in recent years, however a major step
forward was made in 1992-93 with a successful
raffle. The raffle result reflected both the
generosity of sponsor contributions and the energy

of Club members - both senior and junior - in
selling tickets. Our experience should hold us in
good stead for 1993-94 and future years. Other
fundraising was more subsidiary to social
functions - such as a very entertaining quiz night -
and these are also important to continue. Indeed
the Club's social activities were a distinct advance
on recent years.
1992-93 was the first year of operation of a new
management structure for the Club. Initial
impressions are that the new structure has been
effective and does not require any major change.
However there remain things we can do to
improve management processes such as better
information flows and planning arrangements.
These are matters for the new Management
Committee to address before the next season gets
under way.
The list of those who contributed over the course
of the year is a long one but individual
acknowledgments are well deserved given the
Club's performance. Peter Roberts again looked
after the junior activities in a very effective
fashion. Duleep Dan gave strong support in the
organisation of Kanga cricket. Greg Seberry
complemented his continuing success as leader of
the fourths with the role of Club Captain. Shane
Redfern performed the difficult task of coordinating
social functions and fundraising and
succeeded in lifting our game considerably - he
was given particular support with the organisation
of the raffle by Bruce Malbon and Les Dixon.
activities. Bruce Robertson's contribution as
Registrar was invaluable in keeping track of
membership and financial status.
As a first year President, I would especially like to
thank my fellow members of the Executive. Chris
Body proved a highly effective occupant of the
new "active" Vice President position - through
such tasks as representing the Club on the Cricket
Committee, liaising with the Sports Club and
being a regular point of contact witli the senior
teams (as well as taking on his regular "job" of
pitch supervision). Chris Hunter had a tough first
year as Treasurer, given the Club's early cash flow
problems with the Stirling improvements.
However Chris not only saw the Club out of debt
over the course of the season, but has set up a
comprehensive basis for future financial
management and planning.
Finally thanks go to the Club's Secretary, Percy
Samara-Wickrama. Percy is tireless in his support
of the Club and is uncanny in being able to identify
key strategic issues. His role (with assistance
from Chris Body and Chris Harris) in the Club's
20th anniversary celebrations was fundamental to
their success.
To these people, to our sponsors and to all those
who are part of the Weston Creek Cricket Club, I
would like to offer my grateful appreciation for
your contributions. Let us work to make the
1993-94 season as successful as this one.
Greg Rouse deserves recognition for his role as
Chairman of Selectors - the Club Championship
and three grade premierships are as good an
indication as any of his success. All captains
should share in this praise. The Club's coaching
staff, led by Ray Hatch, Col Rowe and Ian King
also contributed highly in this respect and in
fostering the advancement of our younger players
to senior cricket.
Ewan Mackenzie provided great all round support
in the operations of the Club, particularly in
supporting the Secretary and the Management
Committee, in ensuring good coverage of Club
activities in local newspapers, in the role of Junior
Development Officer and in helping with practice

MANAGEMENT
COMMITTEE
REPORT
It is a pleasure to present this 16th Annual
Report of Weston Creek Cricket Club. In
playing terms this is by far the most successful
season the Club has had. Of the seven senior
teams fielded all except the third grade found a
place in the top four with second, fourth, fifth,
sixth and seventh grades becoming minor
premiers. In a rain affected weekend of cricket
only fourth, fifth and sixth grade managed to win
premierships. In addition the Veterans XI won
their competition for the third time in four
seasons.
THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
At the AGM held on Sunday 14th July, when 32
members were present, amendments to the
constitution were passed. Following the approval
of an amended constitution the office bearers,
whose names appear on pages 6 and 7, were
elected.

The Club was fortunate in having the continued
support of our regular and long standing sponsors.
In addition three new supporters joined "The
Winning Team".
We are indebted to the following for their

SENIOR CRICKET
The Club fielded a team in each of the seven
ACTCA grades. All, bar third grade, qualified to

play in the semi finals with second, fourth, fifth,
sixth and seventh grades becoming minor
premiers. Fourth, fifth and sixth grades won their
premierships.
The Veteran's XI won their premiership for the
third time. One of the highlights was a lightning
century by the captain Brian Kensey who made
110 in 24 overs.
GROUNDS
In spite of a few hurdles the few members of the
Club who are committed to the cause continued
with the plans to extend the centre table at
Stirling. The newly laid pitches were so successful
that within eight weeks of completion a first grade
match was staged on one of the new pitches and
Paul Evans scored a century in a match which
brought victory to WCCC.
Paul Brown, David Hazell and Sean Maxwell
prepared the pitches at Stirling and Phillip District.
Once again we extend our thanks to Weston
Creek Football Club for employing Paul Brown.
KANGA CRICKET
105 girls and boys between the ages of 7 Vi and 10
took part in Kanga Cricket each Saturday morning
at Stirling Oval. Newcomer to Canberra Duleep
Dan did an excellent job organizing and
conducting this most important activity each
Saturday morning.
INTERNATIONAL CRICKET
The ACT Cricket Association and the Prime
Minister played host to the visiting West Indian
team and several Club members worked in various
capacities and supported the ACTCA. Their
efforts were appreciated.
EQUIPMENT SUPPLIERS
Short Holdings Pty Ltd of Fyshwick continued to
provide an excellent service. Our thanks go to
Alan Short, Peter McBride and Trudy Smith for
their assistance.
PRESENTATION DINNER
At the end of the season the Club arranged for
Paul to spend a season at Old Trafford under the
Lancashire CCC head groundsman Peter Merron.
PUBLICATIONS
The Club's long running monthly magazine "Cover
Point" continued to be published in its fifteenth
season.
"Weston Creek Cricket Year - 1992-93" recorded
the affairs of the season.
"Twenty Seasons On". A 150 page publication,
produced to celebrate twenty years of cricket, was
launched by Brian Booth at a special dinner on the
20th of Febraary. This limited edition publication
was sold at $20 per copy.
The end of season Championship Presentation
Dinner was held on the 4th of April at Weston
Creek Sports Centre when 90 members and guests
sat down to dinner.

TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY DINNER
JUNIOR CRICKET
The Club fielded 11 teams in Under 10 to Under
16 competitions.
One hundred and forty past and present members
of the Club traveled from around Australia to
attend the dinner at which a special publication,
"Twenty Seasons On", produced to mark the
occasion, was launched by Brian Booth.

Although three limited over matches were planned
for the day the programme had to be abandoned
due to continuous rain during the week and on the
day.
1EETINGS
• CHRIS BODY for his work with the grounds
and pitches and representing the Club at the
Cricket Committee.
• CHRIS HUNTER for bringing much needed
efficiency to the financial affairs of the Club.
The Management Committee met eight times
during the season. In addition to the monthly
Management Committee meetings the Executive
Committee met regularly.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

JUNIOR CRICKET
During the 1992-93 season the club fielded 11
junior teams, one less than 1991-92 due to
the disbanding of the Under 18 competition. It
was pleasing to note that we fielded two Under 10
teams as compared to only one in 1991-92.
The increase in the numbers of Kangas playing
from 85 to 105 augurs well for the future.
Hopefully this trend will continue next season and
will translate into an increase in the number of
Under 10 teams we can field.
During the season we attempted to enhance the
skills of our juniors by conducting coaching
sessions while 10 coaches/managers received their
Level '0' coaching certificates. In addition, four
coaches/managers undertook the Level '1'

preparation for 1993-94.
While none of our teams won premierships - the
Under 14 Division 2 team was very unlucky to fall
two inns short of victory - it is pleasing to record
that all our teams were a credit to the club and
played the game in the right spirit. However, we
will be increasing our efforts to improve the skill
level of our teams in 1993-94.
I would like to thank coaches, managers and
parents for their support and involvement and also
t£> the Club Executive for the encouragement and
assistance they provided during the season.

The Club celebrated its twentieth anniversary
with the publication of "Twenty
Seasons On", an anthology of essays by
past and present members; and a
Celebration Dinner attended by Brian and

In presenting this report I would like to thank
the Weston Creek Cricket Club for granting me
the opportunity to captain the first grade side. It
was indeed an honour to lead not only the Club
but the outstanding players who participated this
season.
We attempted to nurture a young squad and give
several promising personnel adequate opportunity
to perform at the higher level. In some instances
this was a success and whilst others did not quite
succeed it was still a pleasure to witness eleven
players giving 100% each week.
I firmly believe that the Club has the personnel to
be a dominant force in ACT cricket for many years
to come. We must however turn latent ability,
good intentions and hard work into a first grade
premiership. Despite being hailed as the "team to
beat" and being in a position to make the final we
again fell by the wayside at presentation time. A
combination of misfortune, form lapses,
unavailability and a hint of typical "associated
intervention" saw our fine young side beaten in a
thrilling semi final.
The side had many fine individual performances
during the season. Paul Evans, Sean Maxwell and
James Peterson led our batting displays while Col
Hunter, Dean Lovett and Chris Hume produced
many fine spells of quality bowling. Other players
contributed well, as you would expect when a
team only loses two matches, and among these
were Dave Hazell and Scott Stokes with the bat
and Ewan Mackenzie with the ball. Every player
deserves congratulations for their perseverance
and dedication.
Off the field Tommy Porter cannot be commended
highly enough for the "Stirling" job lie performed.
Tom acted as team manager, organiser, morale
man, scorer and good friend to all. Thanks Tom

To Chris Body, the Maxwell "Family", Percy,
Greg Rouse and all the administrative support
group at Weston Creek, the firsts are indebted to
you for all your hard work throughout the 1992-
93 season. Despite the disappointment of not
taking out the "big one" an excellent season of
cricket from everyone.

CJecond grade were minor premiers and are to
^ be congratulated for that effort. Despite
winning the last two round games very
convincingly, the team was unable to cany that
form any further, losing in their semi-final.
The side consisted of a blend of experienced and
talented younger players. The performances of all
players in the grade support the high level of
playing strength at the club.
The responsibility for the bowling attack was
shouldered by Ken Bone whose season's figures
could only be described as sensational. The
youngsters Sean Mowbray, Donovan McGuffin
and Mick Sweeney improved dramatically as the
season progressed and provided great support.
The second grade side always possessed a talented
batting order. However, the consistency needed
to sustain a solid performance for the length of the

season was missing. Many players made valuable
contributions but the standard of batting never
lived up to its potential. Every player must make a
contribution and must be willing to put the work
in when things are hard, not just when the going is
easy.
Fielding throughout the year was always of a very
high standard. Mick Sweeney led the fielding by
example and the work of John McGrady and A1
Taylor behind the stumps was always polished.
Several of the fixtures were interrupted by the
weather and this unfortunately stifled the
continuity of the season. Nevertheless, players
must take all opportunities to improve their
cricket, both during games and most importantly
at practice. It is essential to play to your potential
so as not to let yourself and your team down.
The team statistics for the year record the
performances of all the side's players but special
mention should be made of the following
contributions:
Shelby Rainey's innings of 203 not out was the
innings of the season (season total 377 runs at
37.70).
Ken Bone's bowling statistics were sensational and
will not be bettered for many seasons (46 wickets
at 10.72 including 7 five wicket hauls).
Donovan McGuffin's leg spin bowling, the
standard of which was as good as any for the
season (24 wickets at 12.71 including 10 wickets
in a match).
Sean Mowbray improved as the season progressed
and will be looking for a first grade spot next
season (22 wickets at 20.27).
Mick Sweeney is a player of great talent who with
consistency will develop into an extremely classy
cricketer.
Col Rowe who filled in as captain at various
stages throughout the season and whose advice
was always greatly appreciated.
From the perspective of the club administration,
Greg Rouse did a marvellous job as Chairman of
Selectors making an extremely hard job look easy,
Chris Body did everything well and the
management committee tried extremely hard under
various conditions. Perhaps next season the
committee should look at spreading the
responsibility for management committee
directives a bit further than the grade captains who
already have quite extensive duties.
Congratulations to all players on winning the club
championship and to all those sides that won
premierships. Particular mention should be made
of fourth grade which has won the premiership for
the last three years running although hardly a
mention was made of it at presentation night.
What a super performance at any level of cricket.
Thankyou to all those who played second grade,
for your support, friendship and help in making the
season both successful and enjoyable.

' 1 1 here is a very fine line between success and
failure. If the umpire had ruled the ball off
Craig McDermott's helmet instead of his glove in
Adelaide, the Aussies win the series against the
West Indies and go down in history as heroes.
The story of third grade 92-93 was the struggle to
cross that line between winning and almost
winning. It was always going to be a hard task to
come back from a very poor start to the year.
That, as a team we were able to turn it around and
dominate in the latter part of the season, testifies
to the character of the key players involved.
Being the captain of a losing side is an excellent
way to learn humility. As a player and a captain I
have been fortunate over the years. When you're
on a winning roll all you touch turns to gold.
Instead third grade 1992-93 slipped at the starting
gate and were running up hill on a wet track for
much of the year. Though playing well, the points
eluded us. In the first two rounds we had to be
satisfied with draws while other teams had results
in one day fixtures. In the third round we were
one player short against the eventual premiers. To
make such a poor start worse, I managed to lose
the toss 6- times in a row, not winning one until
round 9. Many of these occasions were quite
decisive in rain affected conditions. Having the
strange misfortune to have the first 5 rounds as
away games added inconvenience to our morale
woes. Our early cricket was an endless circle of
travelling to far flung corners, losing the toss and
batting on wet wickets.
All this does not excuse my responsibilities as
captain. It does I hope provide some background
to the difficulties we faced. I know that other
teams also had problems along the way. In our

case we simply weren't good enough to make up
for the advantage that the use of favourable
conditions gave our opponents.
For my own part, I had thought it would be a
relatively easy matter to build on my previous
successful experiences as captain. However, I
failed to learn quickly enough and reacted slowly
to situations. As a result, I let people down. I
certainly wasn't still suffering from over
confidence at the tail end of the season. The
expectation was that once it stopped raining we
would be able to get back into rhythm. Trouble
was, it didn't stop raining. By the time we were
able to regroup from our early reversals it was too
late to seriously press our claims.
In the latter part of the year when we had gained
the ascendancy, rain intervened again to steal
likely wins that may well have seen us in the four.
Other grades may not realise that we were the
form side in third grade running up to the finals.
That we were able to come back after being
"counted out" is a tribute to the resolve of the
players. A positive attitude and good spirit
prevailed, despite the natural disappointment at
missing out on the honours. Never was this more
evident than in our game against Souths at a tune
when the Club Championship was in doubt. There
was an unspoken agreement that although we as a
team had missed the boat, we'd be committing
ourselves for the rest of the Club.
There were many positives to come out of 92-93
for the grade. The "old guard" provided
solidarity. Respectively Bruce Malbon and Robert
Chapman held the batting and bowling together.
Bruce was the only player to meet the
qualifications for an individual award and turned in
some fine efforts with the willow. His influence
on team performances after assuming the vice
captaincy was both noted and appreciated. If any
player deserved an award however, it was
Chappo. 15 wickets at 11.6 conceding less than
1.4 runs an over is a great effort. Chappo is useful
even when he is not bowling. You know if things
look like getting out of hand you can throw him
the ball and he'll dry up an end for as long as
required.
The emergence of some shining lights in the
"young brigade" does much to balance the losf of
established personnel at this level in the Club.
Players such as JD, Moses, Kingy, Fuss, Tits, Fish,
Eggins, Dazzler, Rosey, Gazza etc, always leave
holes when they leave. On the other hand it was
exciting to see players such as Simon Piatt, Mick
Sweeney, A1 Taylor, Donovan McGuffin, Andrew
Dawson, Andrew Heathwood, Phil Norton et al
rise up and declare themselves. The return of
Scott Evans! ... Mick Gahan The coming of
Rob Asher, Dean Herbert and Keith Gillespie.
Andrew McGregor didn't fulfil as much as might
have been hoped, but he gets the David Gower
award for effortless talent. Luke Anstey is almost
there but needs that extra two yards of pace to
breakthrough at third grade standard. Mick
Power had the pace but was unable to sustain
pressure.
We probably needed a further one or two stand
out competitors in our playing strength. An extra
John Dilena, Mick Gahan, Ian King (or Ken Bone)
throughout the year, would have provided a firmer
platform from which the youthful potential of the
Club at 3rd grade level could develop.
Congratulations to those successful teams and all
those others who did their best only to luck out on
the big one. In particular, salutations to Greg
Seberry's 4th grade in getting the hat-trick. Great
effort!

FOURTH GRADE
Greg Seberry
This is the third successive season in which the
Creek's fourth grade brought home both
minor and major premierships. This fact would
not have been achieved without the commitment,
camaraderie and spirit demonstrated by those
players who represented the fourth grade this
season. It was indeed a privilege to captain such a
side.
To members of the Club Executive for their
support.
To every one of the players who contributed so
much to the successes of the Creek and the spirit
which continued to develop during 1992-93.
The statistics following this report
comprehensively describe the efforts of individual
players. There were a number of very positive
developments this season which should contribute
significantly to the Creek continuing as a force in
ACT cricket over future years.
I believe that some hard work and innovative
decisions have been made by the Executive this
year with the Club being the winners on and off
the field.
Finally a few words of thanks:
To Peter and Sue Heathwood for their unfaltering
support throughout the season (I'm sure that noone
involved with the Hickman-Gould award
could possibly have tasted the 4th Grade afternoon

This report finalises what has been a very
successful year for fifth grade as a team,
winning both the minor premiership and the grand
final of the two day competition. The team also
made the grand final of the one day competition
but went down to Tuggeranong.
As with any successful team, the year was full of
highlights and outstanding performances. The first
accolade goes to Brendan Halloran - his
performances with both the bat and ball during the
season were nothing short of spectacular. I was
extremely pleased to see him awarded the
Cricketer of the Year at our Club presentation
FIFTH GRADE
Bruce Robertson
night. Brendan was the strike bowler (37 wickets
at 11) in a team that dismissed the opposition in
every regular game, bar one, during the season.
This record was achieved by a bowling attack that
had the happy knack of taking wickets. To be
truthful the hardest decision during the season for
me was attempting to give all the bowlers a bowl
before the opposition was dismissed.
The other bowler who deserves special mention Ls
Andrew Dawson (18 wickets at 12.8). He showed
that an attacking off-spinner is something all
captains need. I was especially happy that he

succeeded when given a chance in third grade late
in the season. Andrew is another of the Club
youngsters who has a bright future, if the Club
gives him a chance. While Brendan and Andrew
were the mainstays of the attack other bowlers
deserve special mention.
Gareth Evans developed into a handy change
bowler who could always be depended upon to
take a wicket or two (13 for the season). Also,
both Luke Anstey and Mike Asher performed well
when they played fifths. Both always gave their all
and will be better for the experience. I am
expecting big things from both next year as I can
see them filling the gaps caused by others getting
their chance in higher grades.
Finally, I would like to make special mention of
Ronnie Shean. He played every game this year
and was often one of those bowlers who did not
get much work because of opposition teams being
dismissed cheaply. But when things got tight in
the semi-final he showed his true worth by
bowling very tightly and straight (5 overs, 3 for
17). So a special thanks for a good year.
The batting line-up was a good mixture of youth
and maturity with all players contributing at some
time during the season. I was pleased to see
players such as Mick Sweeney, Tommy Purcell,
Andrew Heathwood and Steve Jessup all succeed
up the grades after starting the season in fifths.
While the batting award was won by Brendan
Halloran, scoring 363 runs at an average of 36.3,
all other batsmen contributed to the team's
performance during the season.
While only two other batsmen scored over 200
runs, Mick Roberts 256 inns at 21 and Brian Ward
256 runs at 18 and only one century was scored (a
brilliant 162 on debut by Dean Herbert) there was
a total of nine scores over 50 for the season
recorded by seven different batsmen. Some
innings that stand out are the opening stand of 126
between Phil Shakespear (71) and Mick Roberts
(66) against Ginninderra and Brendan's 88 against
Souths.

I still believe that there is room for improvement in
the batting. Batsmen must learn to go on with
their innings once they are set, though this will
come with experience. As captain I have noticed
the performances of both Jake Anstey and Mick
Harvey this season and expect both to make major
contributions next season.
The successes of this season will be very hard to
beat but with the younger players coming through
I think we can go one better by also winning the
one day trophy. Thanks again to the thirty players
who played in fifth grade this year. You all played
a part in making fifth grade a successful team.
The spoils of the season belong to all of you.

Well, end of the season again, and time for the
captain to put the season into a few words.
The first tiling to do is to congratulate 4's and 5's
and Greg and Robbo in particular for their all the
way premiership wins. Congratulations also go
out to Greg Rouse and John Bowdler for
overseeing the most successful season in the
Club's history. Five minor premiers, three
premierships, the Vets, the Club Championship, as
well as l's into the finals constitutes a bumper year
in anyone's language.
Congratulations also go out to all the guys who
made their contributions to our own 6th grade
premiership.
As in any season, a few tilings really stand out,
and for me, the two most prominent this year were
the abysmal weather, and the magnificent on-field
season that 6's had. The year was one of the
most enjoyable I have ever had on the field in over
twenty years of competitive sport.
The credit for that goes to all the guys who played
6's throughout the year. It was a magnificent allround
TEAM effort, with all players contributing
and backing each other up at all times. As
everyone knows, that is the essence of a successful
unit.
There was a lot for the purist in 6's this year

(believe it or not), with some high class batting
and bowling to be seen.
A must-see for the purist is Michael Asher's
wrong'un, an often superb delivery, and one that
will take more wickets in the coming years.
Michael (20 wickets) bowled well, especially early
in the year, and will only get better.
In a triumphant year for spin, "JB" Bowdler took
out the bowling award with 22 wickets at 10.50,
including a return of 6/19 (in a one day match),
and formed an often lethal and always aesthetic
partnership with Michael Asher.
Medium pacers also had their day, with perhaps
the best effort a magnificent match return of 10/49
(6/25 in the first innings) from Jason Hossack - a
great spell of sustained fast-medium swing and
cut.
Other highlights include a sixfa' for Mark Slater
(22 wickets) and a maiden fivefa' for Jamie Taylor.
Perhaps the best innings played this year was a
classic steady-the-ship-and-then-counter-attack
knock of 70 from Steve Roberts, which enabled us
to recover from 5/51 to 9/232.
Other big innings came from Michael Harvey, who
scored the season's only ton as well as 2 fifties,
and 88 from Jamie Paterson, and two fifties-plus
from the ever eccentric Chris Akers. All the
above-named bats passed two hundred runs for
the season, as did Jack Smith, with Jamie Paterson
topping 350. Jake Anstey also did well before
being promoted to 5's.
AH in all, it was a great year.
As a last word, I would like to express my thanks
to all my blokes for their efforts and support
throughout the year.

Those assets proved invaluable as our batting
didn't q^ite come up to the same standard, with a
lot of inexperienced players in the side. Our
batting was held together mainly by Mark
Thompson (255 runs); Chris Browning (239);
Craig Dyke (236); Andy Stewart (129); Ian
Webster (120); and Paul Rowe (111). Guest
appearances by a number of players also proved
very helpful and many thanks to all those players
who fdled in for us (some at very short notice).
One very pleasing aspect of our batting was the
many half-century partnerships and the two
century partnerships - 161 unbeaten versus GWB
Gold and 100 unbeaten versus Tuggeranong Old
Boys - that were made during the season.
Another pleasing aspect was the emergence of Ian
Webster as a batsman. After only scoring a total
of 14 runs in Juniors last season he came up to
average 17 this season. A great effort Ian and
good experience.
Speaking of experience, this is unfortunately
where we lost the grand final. With our batting
line up succumbing to the pressure of finals cricket
(and Doug Wesney succumbing to the catch of the
season). ANU's experience with the ball really
told out in the end, dismissing us for a paltry 99,
16 runs short of the flag.
I would like it to be noted that the ANU Old Boys
average age was approximately 35, compared to
Weston's average age of approximately 22.
I would also like to thank all the players who
played this season, for making my job easy; Tony
Purcell as vice captain for his invaluable comments
and ideas; the other captains, selectors and
committee; and Greg Rouse for seeing me first at
the club when he went looking for a captain for
7ths.
Congratulations to fourths, fifths, sixes and
veterans on their premierships. A very successful
season all round.

WOMEN'S REPORT
Stephanie Martin
The women's team finished the ACTWCA
1992-93 season in second place, being
soundly beaten by Canberra North Daramalan in
the final.
Despite the early season frustrations of washed
out games and byes and the disappointment of the
final - brought about by a wet pitch, poor batting
performance and the unavailability of several
players - there have been several highlights.
The consistent and enthusiastic approach to
training by all players contributed to a great deal
of improvement amongst individual players and a
positive attitude within the team.
The arrival of new players at the start and
throughout the season brought the enthusiasm of
youth, and depth, to a team previously struggling
for numbers. These players have demonstrated
their potential and provide encouragement to the
Club for future seasons.
Martin in the ACTWCA Open Age side at the
National Championships in Adelaide was another
highlight. ACT led by Robyn (captain) and Kim
(vice captain) finished fourth. Robyn received the
Wicket Keeping Award for the most dismissals, a
credit to her ability and attitude in only her first
season as the ACT's keeper.
Lisette Robey received the Chief Minister's Award
for the most promising women's under 21 player in
the ACT. She is using this award to travel to
England to hopefully play some games in the local
competition and to watch the Women's World
Cup, which will be a valuable learning experience.
Beth Willard won the ACTWCA Sarah Hodgson
trophy for the best new player in the competition.

individual contributions and performance as a
team throughout the season.

GROUNDS
REPORT
Chris Body
This season we embarked on a major extension at
Stirling Oval, expanding the cricket table from 4
to 8 pitches. Assisted by the Department of Sport
and Recreation, work started in October and was
completed during November. A special thank-you
must go to Paul Brown, Ewan Mackenzie and
Dave Hazell for their assistance during the
construction of these pitches.
After some apprehension about the construction
method by some players and officials, the pitches
were played on in late February. The results were
very promising and with 8 pitches we are now in a
position to start developing Stirling Oval.
Over the next few years I hope we can plan more
developments and improvements for Stirling, so all
club members can benefit.
Paul Brown this year was our curator and with his
experience and knowledge in turf management
produced some very good cricket pitches at
Stirling and Phillip District. At Mawson, Dave
Hazell and Sean Maxwell assisted the club by
preparing the pitch during the season.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the
Weston Creek Football Club for their financial
support, the Committee of Management in
supporting development at Stirling, the curators
for their assistance during the season, but
especially John, Percy and Chris, for their
understanding and commitment in improving
Stirling Oval.

TREASURER'S REPORT 1992-93
1. Attached are the Balance Sheet, and Statement of Income and Expenditure as at 30th April 1993.
They provide a comprehensive picture of the Club's financial position at the end of the 1992-93 season.
Deficit Incurred During the Trading Period
2. The Statement of Income and Expenditure indicates a deficit of $940.66 for the financial year ending
30th April. However, there are other factors which must be considered before a true picture of the Club's
trading balance can be assessed. These are:

ACTUAL DEFICIT FOR 1992-93 SEASON ($165.87)
1992-93 Budget
3. The budget strategy planned for the 1992-93 season, which was approved at the Annual general
meeting on 6th June 1992, was for the Club to:
a. repay the $3000 loan to Chris Body as quickly as possible, and

b. end the year with net cash assets of $3000 to permit the early purchase of kit for the
commencement of the 1993-94 season.
4. The loan to Chris Body was repaid, with interest of 10% pa, in December 1992. However, the net
cash assets of the Club at the end of the financial year amount to $983.47. This includes the $1000 grant
from the ACT Government Department of Recreation and Racing for facilities development (purchase of
covers for Stirling Oval wickets). In essence the Club finished over budget by $3016.53.
5. The major cause of this overspend was the additional expenditure on the facilities at Stirling Oval
($8085) which was not budgeted. The Management Committee, on recognising this problem, took the
following measures to ensure the Club's financial position:
a. the junior cricket coaching program allocation of funds was reduced by $ 1500,
b. the raffle and other fundraising events were able to raise an additional $500 over that
anticipated in the budget,
c. the amount spent on trophies was reduced by $800 from the budget predictions,
d. the expenditure on general administration was reduced by approximately $500 from the
budget figure, and
e. expenditure on kit for all sections of the Club was reduced from the budget allowance by
some $2675.
There were, however, increases in some expenditures (eg; umpires fees increased by $360, and the printing
costs for the 20th Anniversary Book also exceeded budget predictions by $500).
Analysis of the Club's Financial Performance During Season 1992-93
6. The Club undertook a major development program at Stirling Oval during the season which will pay
significant dividends in future seasons. Also, the Club undertook major celebrations to mark its 20th year
with the publishing of a book, the launching of a special commemorative tie, and a dinner which was
attended by a large number of local and intrastate dignitaries. When these events, which are not a normal
feature of each cricket season, are taken into account, I believe that Club members should be happy at the
financial performance of the Club during the 1992-93 season. The Club has a sound financial base on
which to develop a budget strategy for the 1993-94 and subsequent seasons.
7. On a less satisfactory note, I am disappointed that 29 Club members, including many senior players,
still have fees, clothing accounts and monies for functions outstanding. I believe that the Committee made
the financial position of the Club, and individual financial responsibilities, clear to members and provided
players with every opportunity to pay fees, etc which were due. It is regrettable that some players have not
lived up to their financial responsibilities, and that their irresponsibility will affect the Club's capacity to
commence the 1993-94 season with a full suite of training and match kit.

1. General Notes.
a. Statement of Accounting Policy. The financial statements attached hereto do not take into
account changing money values or, except where stated, current valuations of non-current assets.
No attempt has been made to revise historical figures to reflect 1992/93 dollar values.
b. Property, Plant and Equipment Property, plant and equipment values are included at cost or at
independent valuation. All fixed assets, as shown, are depreciated over their estimated useful lives
commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use. Team kits (playing equipment) arc
written off over two years and the nets and other training assets over five years. Stock on hand is
brought to account at cost
c. Incorporation. Weston Creek Cricket Club Incorporated was incorporated on 12th December
1986.
d. Investment. A loan of $6200.00 was made to the Weston Creek Football Club to assist with the
building of the Club. The loan was written off in 1991 against the annual payment of
groundsman's salary by the Football Club. The Cricket Club, as at 30th April 93, has no
investment portfolio.
2. Valuation of Stock on Hand. The stock on hand valuation is calculated in accordance with notes la and lb
above. The figure for this period is calculated as follows:
a. 6 x jumpers @ $59.50 (average cost less discount) - $ 356.99
b. 4 x ties @ $15.91 - $ 63.64
c. 44 x 20th Anniversary books @ $12 - $ 528.00
d. 15 x four piece cricket balls @ $36.70 - $ 550.50
