PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
On May 1 st , 2012, the Board of Trustees appointed me as principal of Miles MacDonnell Collegiate based
on the needs of the school division. I have mixed emotions about the move because I am excited about
the new challenge, but sad to leave such a great school community. I have thoroughly enjoyed my five
years as the principal of Transcona Collegiate and would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the
students, parents and staff for their support in making TCI one of the best high schools in the Province.
Students have benefitted from the outstanding work of our staff, both in the classroom and in the many
extra-curricular activities offered to them. Students have lived up to the “Titan” spirit, displaying
outstanding character and representing our school well. The parent volunteers are numerous and have
willingly given their time to benefit all of our students. I am very proud of our school‟s accomplishments
and I say “Thank you” to TCI and its community for an excellent experience here.
I welcome Ms. Sandy Dzuba, current Principal of John Gunn Middle School, as the new Principal of
Transcona Collegiate. I wish her all the best in her new position.
The month of June marks the end of another semester and the end of the school year. For most courses,
exams are part of the assessment and evaluation process of students. Some of these exams are very
practical in nature and occur in the context of classes, such as in our music program, art and drama
programs and some industrial arts courses. Most exams, however, are planned formally.
Please consult the exam timetable included with this newsletter. All students are expected to write
examinations as part of the assessment and evaluation of their achievement. As per school policy, exams
represent 30% of the final grade in any school course.
Please note the new exam start times (9 a.m. and 1 p.m.).
In addition to course work and examinations, we are also preparing for Student Council award ceremonies
on May 18 th and graduation ceremonies and award presentations on June 27 th . It is a busy season, but one
that makes us proud of our students‟ many achievements.
In this newsletter, you will find the Honour Roll list for mid-term reports in Semester Two. These
students have achieved an overall average of 80% or better. Well done!
Final reports for the 2011-12 school year will be available from TA‟s on June 29 th , 9:00 a.m. to 10:00
a.m. If a student is unable to pick up his/her report, please ensure the office has a self–addressed
envelope in which the report can be mailed. Should a student fail a course and is interested in summer
school, this information is available in the newsletter.
LOOKING AHEAD TO 2012-13
Registrations are now in for the upcoming school year. We are presently timetabling and planning class
configurations. Once this information is complete, parents and students will be informed as follows:
- For Grade 9 students in 2012-13: Letters will be sent home in late August detailing the
arrangements for the first day of school (September 5 th , 2012). Timetables will be distributed
to all grade 9 students at school as part of the orientation to school.
- For grade 10-12 students in 2012-13: Letters will be sent home in late August. These
letters will contain information about the first day of school (September 5 th , 2012) and a copy
of the student‟s timetable. Should any changes be necessary, counsellors will be available
August 28 th , 29 th , and 30 th .

TRI-SCHOOL CAMPUS INITIATIVE
Good things happen when people come together. The Tri-School Campus Initiative is a
committed group of community members along with students, staff and administration
who have joined forces to revitalize the school‟s community recreational space. The
location of the project is the green space of Radisson Elementary, John W. Gunn Middle
School and Transcona Collegiate.
The Tri-School Campus Initiative is providing quality recreational spaces for our
community members and schools. Revitalizing our green space is essential to meet the
evolving needs of our area residents and students who represent all ages and abilities.
The River East Transcona School Division got the ball rolling with a $100,000
contribution for the rebuilding/resurfacing of the existing track. Grant monies from City,
Provincial and Federal governments along with community donations have funded the
development of a soccer field ($25,000) in the inner area of the track, an outdoor
basketball court ($85,000), and a wheelchair accessible play structure at Radisson School
($62,000). The planting of numerous trees ($35,000) begins on May 15, 2012. The trees
will provide much needed shade and will promote a healthy place for students to play.
Please see the next page to see a list of donors that have given generously to this project.
If you would like to support the Tri-School Campus Initiative, you can make a gift to us
care of the River East Transcona School Division. Cheques or money orders are payable
to The River East Transcona Trust Fund – Tri-School Campus Initiative. The donation
can be dropped off at the front office of any one of the three schools.

30HR FAMINE…
On Friday, April 13th th , 2012, The Global Issues Group
hosted the overnight 30 hr. Famine adventure. The group
raised $2724.52 which will be contributed to World Vision.

yet another successful event!

A huge thank you goes out to the 12 awesome students who have
volunteered their lunch hours from September to the end of May to
mentor young Radisson students. They have worked tirelessly with
the Big Brothers/Sisters Club of Winnipeg. This venture is the first
of its kind in Canada, where Big Brothers Big Sisters has partnered
with a high school for mentoring purposes and has now expanded to
include other high schools in the city.
Anyone planning to attend summer school, please see Mrs. Young. Applications are also
available on the Divisional website but a counsellor or administrator must sign off on them
and verify the final mark. Not all courses are offered through our School Division and it may
be necessary to apply to other Divisions for courses like grade 10 Geography and Science.
If you are finding yourself stressed with upcoming assignments, tests, and exams, our doors
are always open. Sometimes just having someone to listen can help!

Music Notes
We‟re on the home stretch of the year and there are several things coming up for us here in
the Music department:
1. Final Concerts:
a. Jazz Concert (all jazz bands & vocal jazz) –
Tuesday, May 15, 7:00 p.m. at Abundant Life
Baptist Church, 1396 Plessis Rd.
b. Final Concert (all concert bands & concert
choirs) – Wednesday, May 23, 7:00 p.m. at
Covenant Christian Reform Church,

NOTE: the original date for the final concert was different and we had to switch it
due to venue availability.
2. Banff Music Festival Tour – thank you to all the students for a fantastic trip to Banff!
The kids were a pleasure to travel with (as usual) and performed well. Our tentative
plan for next year is Chicago.
3. If you haven‟t had a chance to contact Lois McLennan regarding the phone book
fundraiser, please do so. I sent that email out last week. Thanks to Lois for
spearheading this again!
4. Our next Music Parents Meeting is Wednesday, May 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the Music
Room at TCI. All are welcome.
5. Please consider becoming a part of the MPA executive for next year, as several of our
parents are moving on with their kids. We will be looking for a new President and
Treasurer.
6. Music Monday – all parents and friends are welcome to come to TCI on Monday,
May 7 for our Music Monday concert in the Gym at 10:30. You‟ll hear music from
TCI, JWG, JT, Radisson and Westview in this hour-long celebration of Music in our
schools.
7. Congratulations to Kayla Hay and Devon Gillingham, who performed auditions at the
festival in Banff and won scholarships to summer music workshops!
8. The MPA provides several bursaries for students to attend summer Music camps and
workshops. If your child would like to apply for a bursary, they can see Mr. S for
details. The deadline for applications is May 4.
9. If your child still needs to attend a concert for their Concert Evaluation assignment
they should do it very soon because most concert seasons are winding down and it is
getting harder to find appropriate concerts to attend.
10. Claire Powell, our teacher-in-training, will be heading back to Brandon next Friday.
We‟ve enjoyed having her work with the students here at TCI and we wish her all the
best!

DRAMA DEPARTMENT UPDATE
The T.C.I Fringe Festival is almost ready to unfold May 7 -11 at Radisson Theater
7:00 p.m. with admission of $2.00 nightly. The lineup is:
Monday: Young Directors; featuring original scripts by
Druscilla Henault, CJ Sengsuriya and Mandy Dunlop-Cooper
Tuesday: The Improv. showcasing our school Improv. team
with Whose Line is it performances and audience help.
Wednesday: T.C.I.'s Got Talent; where student council stages
the best variety performers to grace the halls of T.C.I.
Thursday: Music Fest; Kobalt, Peace Ticket and Goliath
perform live and intimate.
Friday: Saturday Night Live: a select comedy troupe presents
off the wall unique skits in an SNL format.
Seating is limited for all nights and doors open at 6:30. Come early and enjoy.
Grease
The cast for November's performance of Grease has been selected and are beginning
the journey back to the 50's learning a little swing and searching far and wide for 50's
memorabilia. Currently we are looking for chrome legged tables and chairs, 50's
styles of clothing in various sizes, chrome dinner stools, an older record player and
an early 50's or 40's 2 door vehicle to become our Greased lightning. (Any condition
will do) We are hoping to make the November 2012 show a visual delight with a
little help from the community.

SPORTS NEWS
Ringette
The girl‟s high school ringette team competed in a tournament a couple of weekends ago. The
team was made up of grade 9 and 10 players. Despite losing all three games against older
players, the team played well, especially our goalie who was better than great. Overall, the
girls had fun and represented TCI with class!
Thanks to TCI, the coaches and Kelly Y. for heading up the first team out of TCI.
Badminton
This years' coaches for the TCI School Team were Mrs. C. Adamson for Junior Varsity and
Mr. R. Kohut for Varsity. The Team played an Invitational Tournament at Murdoch Mackay
Collegiate in Mid-April. Peter Takis and Jett Sinclair came in First Place in Varsity Boys
Doubles, while Troy Smith and Jason Slipec came in second. Chad Dagdick came in second
in Varsity Boys Singles. Nathan Dagdick and Selina Frost came in second in Junior Varsity
Mixed-Doubles.
At the KPAC Championship near the end of April at River East Collegiate Chad Dagdick was
in a three-way tie for first-place in the Varsity Boys Singles Round-Robin Tournament.
Unfortunately he lost in the first playoff game.
Kohut/Adamson
Lacrosse and Track and Field
The Titans boys‟ field lacrosse team has been practicing hard throughout the month of April.
There will be games every Tuesday and Thursday throughout May. On May 26 th and May
27 th at TCI field, there will be exhibition games showcasing our league‟s teams as they face
off against Notre Dame and Moose Jaw.
The KPAC track & field meet is on May 22 nd and May 24 th in Selkirk. There are practices
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 7:45am.
